Owen Hall 790 E. Kirkwood Avenue Bloomington, IN 47405-7104 (812) 855-1646 fax (812) 855-2060

The College of Arts + Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington welcomes you to Science Fest 2017! We are excited to open our campus, labs, observatory, and classrooms to you, so that you can share our awe and wonder as we explore the worlds around, above, beneath, and within us. Science Fest has become a beloved tradition. This year’s edition is especially exciting because we have several new partners, including our Department of Anthropology and our School of Art, Architecture and Design, participating. So, stand up straight, because our anthropologists are going to explain the evolution of upright walking. And the designers at our digital fabrication lab will show you how to make a laser-cut key chain. You can also journey back in time by watching an alchemical transmutation. During the Middle Ages, alchemists, the forerunners of today’s chemists, were fascinated by the idea of transforming base metals into gold. In fact, transmutation remains the mission of today’s universities. At the College of Arts and Sciences, we aim to turn today’s brightest young students into tomorrow’s leading scholars and scientists. We aim to transform the world through our research, analyses, discoveries and through the education of a new generation of scholars. I hope that Science Fest will transform you, too. We’d love to welcome the “new transformed you” back to our campus one day as a student in the College, ready to advance the frontiers of knowledge along with us. So, welcome. Let the experiments and transformations begin! Sincerely,

Larry D. Singell Executive Dean College of Arts and Sciences

Sign-InInformation tables are located in all six buildings . Please sign in so we know you and those you came with are here . If you would like to receive an early notification about next year’s Science Fest, provide us with your email as well . This will help us let potential funders know how many people (and what age groups) come to Science Fest .

WayfindingTo assist in finding your way around campus today, we’ve created our own “yellow brick road” by using sidewalk chalk and images to identify each building . At the top of each activity page you will find an icon; this is the symbol that is chalked on the sidewalk for the building where the activities listed on the page can be found . Use this legend to reveal a world of science exploration and wonder!

Follow the WHITE ATOM path to BALLANTINE HALL

Anthropology Student Building • 701 E. Kirkwood Ave.

We Are What We Ate:Or are we?

The field of Bioanthropology examines the adaptation, variation, and evolutionary history of humans and their relatives, living and extinct.

Current research by bioanthropologists in the IU Department of Anthropology ask questions about the characteristics that make us human . At Science Fest 2017 we will consider how our ancestors’ quest for food made us who we are today .

You are invited to join us in Student Building 060

TO EXPLORE THESE QUESTIONS: + What was a Paleolithic diet and how

does it compare to the currently popular Paleo Diet?

+ How do skulls, teeth, and digestive tracts of animals eating different diets compare to humans?

+ How do paleontologists determine what our ancestor’s diets were?

+ What do Paleolithic stone tools tell us about our ancestor’s diet?

+ How did tool use change our ancestor’s diets? How does technology change our diets today?

+ Almost all terrestrial animals walk on four legs, why do humans walk upright on two legs (bipedalism)?

+ What advantage did bipedalism give our chimpan-zee-like ancestors some 5 million years ago?

+ What can we learn about human evolution from studying chimpanzee behavior and anatomy today?

TO SEARCH FOR ANSWERS, WE WILL: + Compare skulls and skeletons of modern humans, human ancestors, and other primates

+ Examine Paleolithic stone tools + Learn to walk like a chimpanzee and consider

advantages of different forms of locomotion + Walk in the footsteps of our ancestors on a printed replica of the famous Laetoli footprints

Explore Scientific Ideas Old and New with the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine

Ever heard of alchemy? Animal electricity?

How about fluxions or phlogiston?

Wonder why scientists once thought there were seas on the Moon and canals on Mars?

COME SEE US TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SCIENCE’S AMAZING HISTORY AND SOME OF THE INCREDIBLE IDEAS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE!In IU’s Department of History & Philosophy of Science & Medicine, we study how people work (and have worked for centuries!) to understand the world around them, from contemplating the large-scale structure of the universe to examining the smallest elements of the human body . We’ll be showing off some of the mysteries that puzzled early scientists and talking about the bygone terms and theories they came up with to explain them - and how these contrib-uted to the science we have today .

INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS: 9 AM - 3 PM

Room 138

Challenge your sense of history by visiting our interactive timeline! Can you figure out where quotes, images, old ideas, and new discoveries fit in time?

Take a break to color, and learn the stories behind, some historical scientific and medical images from the Color Our Collections project (www .colorourcollections .org) at our coloring table!

Learn more about the history of science here at IU by picking up our campus exploration activity sheet .

SCHEDULED EVENTS:Join us in room 140 for our History of Science Story-time at 9:30 am, Noon and 2 pm, suitable for kids of all ages, to learn about the astronomer Johannes Kepler’s imaginary trip to the moon and why he thought there might be life there .

Live demonstrations of historic experiments and models in room 138 at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm - including an example of a historical alchemical “transmutation”!

Philosophers of science ask questions such as:

+ What makes science different from other human activities?

+ How can we improve our scientific theories and practices?

+ Are some ways of gaining knowledge better than others?

+ We know scientists in the past were sometimes wrong about how things worked . How can we tell where we might be making similar mistakes today?

Ask your own at our philosophy of science Q&A table!

Back by popular demand- it’s the brain car chaLlenge Use EEG technology to harness the power of your mind and challenge your friends to a race using electric slot cars that you “think” to go .

Is the image above moving? Or is your mind playing tricks on you? Explore the mind-bending world of perception and illusion. Seeing is believ-ing, except when it isn’t.

Is seeing believing?

With 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections the human brain is the most complex thing in the universe . Come explore its wonders and learn how the department of Pyshcological and Brain Sciences is unlocking the myster-ies of the brain and human behavior .

MIND = BLOWN!

Can you drive this car using only your brain?

What can we learn about the mind from simple autonomous vehicles? Based on Valentino Brait-enberg’s book of though experiments you’ll examine the “behavior” of these deceivingly simple vehicles as the react to the world around them .

DEPARTMENT OF

Indiana University

VEHICLES- Experiments in Synthetic Psychology

The mission of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences is to lead scientific advances through state-of-the-art experimentation and theory with the goal of under-standing how the entire brain-behavior system works, from molecular neuroscience to cognition to the social behavior of groups . Through the application of cutting-edge discov-eries to real world problems, through the training of the next generation of scientists, and through training citizens who will apply their knowledge in many fields from medi-cine to industry to public service, the department accepts the responsibility to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions for problems that impact human lives .
