Why We Love Our ChildrenWhy do we love our children?

We love them because they are ours, because they are Jewish kinderlach, and because they make us proud. But sometimes we just love them because they are so, so, so cute.

One busy mommy was rushing home with the kids after a trip to the grocery store when Shloimy stopped in his tracks. “Look Mommy,” he pointed excitedly. “A policeman. And he has a blue police car with real cherry lights!” And Shloimy and his siblings duly went over to stare in wide-eyed wonder at the tall police officer leaning nonchalantly against the car.

The children heard a barking sound com-ing from the back of the police vehicle. Shoimy gazed at the police officer and asked, “Is that a dog you have in your car?”

“It sure is,” the friendly policeman re-plied.

Puzzled, Shloimy looked at him and then towards the back of the car. Finally he said, “But what did the dog do?”

So that is

why we love our children. For their in-nocence, for their charm, and for their guilelessness.

Another Mommy would often take along her four-year-old daughter Mindy on her chessed rounds at various nursing homes. Mindy was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day, Mommy found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As she braced herself for the inevitable barrage of questions, Mindy merely turned and whispered, “The tzein malach (tooth fairy) will never believe this!”

So, are our children cute, or are they cute?

You think you are cleaning your home, but you may actually be polluting it with unsafe and even harmful chemicals.

People today are sicker than ever before. Every year, millions are diagnosed with previously unheard-of autoimmune conditions, die of cancer, heart disease and other diseases. Even with the best medical system in the world (definitely the most expensive…), there are still millions who remain sick, or die prematurely. That’s because people are being diagnosed with a wider range of diseases, and at younger ages than ever before. There is much in our diet, lifestyle and environment that contribute to our bodies failing on us. Toxins and harmful chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis are also a big part of the problem.

Household cleaners are one of the primary ways we are exposed to harmful toxins every day. When it comes to cleaners, the consumer has little to go on beyond the warning labels that manufacturers are required to put on their products. The labels DANGER, WARNING and POISON give only a very general idea of the seriousness of the unknown substances a product contains. In fact, a New York Poison Control Center study found that 85 percent of product warning labels are inadequate.

These warnings apply only to a product’s immediate health effects; they don’t illuminate us as to what happens when it is used over a long period of time. If you’re using common household cleaning products, you are likely to encounter the following chemicals (among many others), and the following effects, while cleaning:

• Chlorinated phenols found in toilet bowl cleaners are toxic to respiratory and circulatory systems.

• Diethylene glycol found in window cleaners suppresses the nervous system.

• Phenols found in disinfectants are toxic to respiratory and circulatory systems.

• Nonylphenolethoxylate, a common surfactant (detergent) found in laundry detergents and all-purpose cleaners, is banned in Europe.

• Formaldehyde found in spray and wick deodorizer is a respiratory irritant and suspected carcinogen (cancer causing).

• Petroleum solvents in floor cleaners damage mucous membranes.

• Perchloroethylene, a spot remover, causes liver and kidney damage.

• Butyl cellosolve, common in all-purpose, window and other types of cleaners, damages bone marrow, the nervous system, kidneys and the liver.

The list could fill a book. And it’s a book that would include thousands of other chemicals — some so dangerous that they are found on lists of chemicals associated with Superfund toxic waste sites and in the toxins section of the U.S. Clean Air and Water Acts.

To avoid all these chemicals may be impossible, but at the very least, we should be aware of their harmful effects, and use them conservatively and judiciously. Store these chemicals safely and away from kids. Try using alternative cleaning products or make your own (check out our recipe for making you own cleaning product in this issue).

Unlike harsh chemical products, these homemade cleaners are easy on little hands and lungs, household surfaces, and the environment. The scrub works great on sinks and pans (just dampen the surfaces first); the squirt cleaner, on counters and tile.

Materials

• Baking soda

• Lavender or eucalyptus essential oil

• Water

• Recycled container with twist-on cap

• Recycled dish detergent bottle

Instructions

1. For the scrub: Stir 6 to 7 drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil into 3/4 cup of baking soda. Transfer the mixture to a recycled container with a twist-on cap (for easy dispensing, use a nail to poke a few holes in the cap beforehand).

2. For the squirt cleaner: Dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 2 cups of water, then stir in 4 drops of essential oil. Pour the mixture into a recycled dish detergent bottle. To use it, shake the bottle and then squirt small amounts on a dampened sponge.
