Gone Sailing Again!

Thanks to all that covered for me during my June sailing excursions. Special thanks to Robin Witte, and Mark Gyorgy, I greatly appreciate their support in my absence. I would also like to recognize the Social team and Zahniser’s Ma-rina staff for the excellent Luau event. The decision to hold the event on Fri-day night was spot on. Apparently, Summer arrived while I was sailing up north. We left Newport in foul weather gear and boots and by the time we reached Maryland it was all shorts and T-shirts. The weather has had some impact on our Summer Sailing Camp. The decision was made to keep them ashore (or at the pool) for a cou-ple of days so far. Our new camp director and great instructor crew has made the best of the situation and managed to get everyone on the water for a least 3 ½ days each week. I will write more about this year’s team in next month’s Clew.

July means Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge for the racers. This years event starts with registration on Friday, July 19th. Racing begins on Saturday morn-ing. If you have not already registered for the Screwpile Challenge event, please do so as soon as possible. We are currently well represented with al-most half of the competitors being SMSA boats. We will again have a Screw-pile Welcome event at the club on Friday night and will have sponsor support for this year’s event. Look for that announcement shortly and the possibility of free beer to racers. Good luck to all the SMSA boats, and I would ask our members to be welcoming to all the out of town competitors (off the race-course that is).

Our Cruisers and Smallboat fleet have been busy also, both have extensive ar-ticles in this months Clew. On the Smallboat side I should recognize the SMSA presence at this years VA Governor’s Cup. Four Buccaneers travelled to Kerr Lake this year. It was close racing and Jeff Moore edged out Jimmy Yurko for the win in the Buccaneer class. Congratulations to all that participated.

Our Adult Learn to Sail program is working to get new sailors on the water. If you have room for a few extra sailors on your next sail or are just looking for crew, please send a note to [email protected].

Please read Robin Witte’s article on volunteer assistance needed. We have al-ways taken pride in the fact that we are a volunteer run organization. Over the years we have grown beyond our means in some areas, Bar tending and sum-mer Camp are two examples where we have evolved to a paid staff. However,

SMSA Members,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We appreciate everyone who is stepping up to the plate and volunteering for a wide variety of jobs to keep our club-house, dock and sailing programs available to our membership. Howev-er, our need for volunteers never stops.

After more than ten years as our Facilities Chair, Jolie Homsher will be stepping down. Many thanks to Jolie for all of her hard work keeping our club ship shape. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by our members.

With Jolie stepping down, you guessed it, we are in need of a new Facilities Chair. This is a key position that needs to be filled as soon as possible. Please contact me directly if you are interested and I can provide you with a descrip-tion of the position.

Also, starting in August Nichole Doub has graciously volunteered to be your next Clew Editor. Thank you Nichole!!!

If you want to volunteer for any of the positions listed below or know of some-thing not listed please send me an e-mail ([email protected]) and I will get you connected with the appropriate Chairperson. THIS IS YOUR CLUB, HELP KEEP SMSA RUNNING SMOOTHLY!!! Robin Witte SMSA Rear Commodore

THE SOCIAL SCENE WITH GRANT & KEEN Cori Grant & Jody Keen, Co-Chairs

[email protected]

I would like to take a moment to welcome my co-chair Cori Grant. She has graciously volunteered to accept the position of co-chair of the so-cial committee.

Our last social event was the Luau at the very end of May. We changed things up a bit and scheduled the event for a Friday evening instead of the traditional Saturday late afternoon. The weather was great and we had a wonderful turnout! It worked out so well that we will probably keep it on a Friday evening for next year.

July brings activity to the club in the form of the 4th of July celebration and the Screwpile Welcome Party. On the 4th, plan on gathering at the club to watch the fireworks provided by the Solomon's Business Associ-ation. The club will open at 5pm. The potluck will start at 6pm. We will provide bratwurst and hamburgers so please bring a yummy side dish to share.

Later in the month, on Friday the 19th, we will be hosting the Screwpile Welcome Party. So come on out for happy hour and welcome fellow sailors from other clubs.

In the meantime, we hope to see you around the club and on the water.

Jody and Cori

there are other parts of the club that are better served by enthusiastic volun-teers. It is also a good way to get to know your fellow members.

The Club and the Island will be very busy the week of July 4th, see the Social Scene for our Potluck Social details. Parking will always be a problem, so come early, and remember it is your club and you are welcome anytime. The doors may not be open officially for an event, but you can come in early and beat the crowd. The door combinations were included in your yearbook package or ask a club member or officer for assistance. Jim Whited SMSA Commodore

Cruising Chair

[email protected]

We had great cruises to the Southern Bay, Oxford and the Eastern Bay/Chestertown over the past month. Three cruises are planned for July. The first is the 4th of July Cruise to St Mary’s River (Horseshoe Bend) and Price Cove July 5 to July 7. A three day cruise to Her-rington Harbor South begins on July 15. The final cruise in July, the Urbana Cruise, is a six day cruise beginning on July 24. See the Cruise Schedule in the Yearbook or on the SMSA web site for details. Looking ahead to August, mark your calendars for the Mixed Couple Race/Battle Creek Raft- up on August 24 - 25. As you can see, we have something for every SMSA member on our cruise sched-ule, so…. THINK CRUISING!

CRUISERS

CORNER

Southern Bay Cruise Patty Kimmel and Rich Freeman Patty K Too (Patty Kimmel & Rich Freeman) departed her slip at Spring Cove Mari-na at 0650 hours to begin the trip south. Conditions were rainy and cool (cold) with limited visibility but with winds gusting to 17 knots from the northwest we were able to sail. Waves were 2 to 3 feet, just enough for a pleasant sail. After reaching Smith Point we furled the jib and just motored into Great Wicomico Mill Creek and anchored. Safina (Dennis Chandler), Kalypso(Fred Siesseger) and Serenity (Curt & Dottie Hamilton) arrived and rafted up for happy hour. The other Serenity (Carl & Martha Kemp) called earlier in the morning and said they would catch up with everyone the next day in Jackson Creek. After a nice happy hour, everyone broke off and anchored for the night. With very light winds the boats departed early for the four hour motor to Jackson Creek. Once we got settled in, the winds picked up around 1400 hours. Then the rain started, only lasting for about an hour. The boats rafted up and our anchor was very well set with the increase in winds. Serenity finally arrived, the sun came out, and we had a great happy hour. Everyone broke off to anchor and enjoy a calm night. Continued on page 7

Continued from page 6 We departed at 0720 hours for the 28 NM trip to Cape Charles. With sloppy water and light winds the whole way, we arrived a little after noon and secured in our slip. All five boats were together on C dock. Everyone spent the afternoon walking and biking around town. Surprising the number of stores open before Memorial Day. We then had a enjoyable dinner at The Shanty, the marina’s restaurant. Everyone had a leisurely lay day in Cape Charles, relaxing, visiting more of the stores, and biking around the area (including a trip to the Food Lion about 2.5 miles down the road). We all spent part of the day watching a HUGE barge mounted crane lift out the large rusted rail-barge loading equipment as it was cut up. The plan is to construct additional marina facilities and a mixed use community in the old rail area. Also, across the creek, a ship yard with a large boat lift is planned. The precast con-crete yard has shut down and the equipment is also being removed. Many changes are coming to the entrance of Cape Charles in the next two years With Safina and Serenity (Curt & Dottie Hamilton) headed back to Solomons for other commitments, we made a collective decision to cut the cruise a little short and the remaining boats headed for Carter Creek. Favorable winds made it a great day sailing. Apon arrival, Patty K Too tooka slip at the Tides Inn and Kalypso and Se-renity (Martha & Carl) anchored out. All had a nice dinner in the dining room at the inn. The new chef lived up to his reputation. The next morning we departed the Tides Inn at 0805 hours heading for Smith Creek. We motored down the Rappahannock River to the bay and picked up some decent winds to Smith Creek. We dodged a HUGE LNG tanker near Point Lookout. Had her on AIS, waited for her to complete her turn and did a clean port to port pass. We anchored in Smith Creek, Barking Dog Cove, and dinghied into Courtney’s for supper. Good rockfish and crab cakes. When we returned to our boats we were greeted by a large full moon and calm winds for the evening. The following morning, Sunday, we headed back to Solomons. We motored out to PR1 and then put out the headsail and sailed to Cedar Point. Sloppy water and killer flies the whole way back to Spring Cove Marina. Successful cruise. No boat issues. No one got sick. Had several good days of sailing. Great happy hours. Everyone had a good time. Doesn’t get much better than that…

Hey there racers, Summer is now officially here, lots of sailing to do with club events and even our biggest upcoming July event, Screwpile! Well don't want to waste too much more of your time, so look at our upcoming race schedule, come out and play with your fellow club members, or hey we could always use an RC volunteer or two! See you all on the water! Cheers!

Sailing season is in high tempo and the SMSA bar is pouring on the fun! Please welcome our three new paid bartenders; Vivian Vuong, Ryan Mercier and Barbara Mederos. Vivian, Ryan and Barbara are here to support your liquid refresh-ment needs at the SMSA Barnacle Bar. However, we still need volunteers. Bartending is a great way to meet club member-ship and socialize! If you wish to sign-up, just let me know at [email protected] and I’ll ensure you get trained and are up to speed. To sign-up to bartend on specific dates, please check out https://www.smsa.com/BarSchedule.php! The bar can’t operate without you! We have a new boat name drink courtesy of Dan Bowman, ‘The Scurvy Flamingo’. The Boat Name inventory of drinks continues to increase, adding to the fun. With the addition of ‘The Scurvy Flamingo’ the competition heats up for 2019. But so far, the Boat Name Drink ‘Sabrena’ reportedly is Top Gun (or top sail)! So, come out to the bar and let me know your favorite Boat Name Drink, and don’t forget to vote for the 2019 Boat Name Drink of the year! If you have a specific mixology that you enjoy and wish to add to the Boat Name Drink inventory, let me know! One dollar off a Boat Name drink if wearing boat ap-parel adorned with your boat’s name at the Barnacle Bar! So after all the ballots are in, for 2018 the Boat Name Drink of the year is . . . drum roll please . . . ‘Wicked Good’ by Mark Gyorgy! Although ‘Hell Cat’ was in close contention, several episodes of exploding blenders unfortunately placed ‘Hell Cat’ as a close second :<). As reminder, please don’t bring your own alcohol into the bar and alcohol purchased must be consumed on the premises. This ensures SMSA retains its liquor license. Next time you are at the SMSA bar, please check with the bartender to see if you still have a tab. If you have an outstanding tab, please pay-up and close-out. Credit cards are accepted. For any feedback, comments or questions, please me know. The Barnacle Bar is here for you! Stay Thirsty my friends! Todd Porter

SMALL-

RACING

Dan Bowman

Smallboat Race Chair

We are at mid-season and conditions for racing has been anything but typical for the Chesa-

peake Bay with weather ranging from blow out days to low wind drifters and a lot of pleasant

sailing in between in warmer than average conditions.

The 4th Annual Broken Rudder - Dinghy Distance Race was a good day with a mix of boats

from a single-handed Laser to a catamaran. The race included a spectacular reach outside

the mouth of the Patuxent river with Robert & Caroline Brunger’s Hobie 16 passing the leader

and eventual race winner, Mark Witte with Kathleen Stull on his VX/ One “Water Rat”. The

last leg back into the basin gave the VX/One a chance to reel the Hobie back in and extend

on the Buccaneer 18’s. The Spring Invite was cancelled due to a lack of race committee vol-

unteers but the competitors were grateful that the ABR/DDR was held in perfect weather

conditions.

Photos from 4th Annual Broken Rudder. Apologies Doug, could not find a photo of your Laser.

Smallboat Racers & Club Members: The Smallboat Race Committee sign-up sheet is on the

club website under the Smallboat link, there are a lot of RC days still to be filled. We are still

searching for a Smallboat Vice Chair, and Portsmouth Fleet Captain.

See you at the club and on the water.
