Super Series Finish in Fort Worth Concludes COVID Postponed Rodeo Houston

By Tanya Randall Rodeo Houston was a dream come true for many contestants. It was the culmination of years of work—strategic entering and successful placings—to earn a berth to the richest winter rodeo in hopes of securing a lucrative payday for an even more elusive goal—qualification to the National Finals Rodeo. The more than $1.7 million rodeo, originally scheduled for March 3-22, was halfway through its Super Series—five brackets of eight contestants vying for advance-ment toward the $50,000 Champion-ship—when COVID-19 forced the entire event to shut down on March 11 for an unspecified time. The Super Series Finish, presented in part by the Paramount hit show “Yel-lowstone,” allowed for the conclusion of the rodeo at the historic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, May 29-31. The fanless rodeo was viewable via the Cowboy Channel and by closed-circuit viewing on the lawns outside. Each contestant who opted to compete was given a $300 appearance fee. The purse was significantly reduced to $800, $600, $400 and $200 for first through fourth, respectively, and was not included in the WPRA World Standings. However, a points to dollars conversion, amounting to the original payouts of $3,000, $2,000, $1,000 and $750 counted toward the standings. So, while the actual cash payout differed, the amount credited to the standings remained the same for all contestants whether they competed in Houston or in Fort Worth. Back in Houston, Great Lakes Circuit Champion Kricket Ginter and Dial A Little Fame (“Jax”) dominated the 14-second pattern on the two acre floor of NRG Stadium in Bracket 1. They were the richest barrel racers of the rodeo, winning $8,500. “We knew had the capability of shining there if the cards fell correctly,” said Ginter, “but In a million years I never would have thought I was going to win two rounds and tie for first for the third. He’s a very honest horse and since the barrels are no where near a fence, we knew we wouldn’t have a problem getting him to them.” Jax, a 14-year-old Dash Ta Fame gelding out of Dialalena Leo, by Little John Dial, never had a misstep on the compact footing at NRG either. “He definitely takes care of himself,” said Ginter. “He’s very good on all ground. You worry about him getting hurt, but he will

always take care of you and himself. It’s very nice for rodeo.” Ginter, a radiography technician and mother of two young children—a third grader and a kindergartener—is a self-professed homebody. She was hoping a good winter and Rodeo Houston could give her a shot at the NFR on her own terms. “I would love for it to be reachable to me,” she said. “I felt really good when Houston was going on because we said if I did well enough and it boosted me up enough we for sure would have tried

to go all the way. Houston did bump me up there, but we’ll just have to see how the ones around us play out.” That denied opportunity, plus the slew of rodeo cancelations, has left Ginter’s plans up in the air. “We’ve thought about it but haven’t yet decided 100 percent on a game plan,” said Ginter, who is currently No. 33 in the WPRA World Standings with $10,831 from four rodeos. “A lot of our big-ger circuit rodeos have already cancelled event into July and August, so it really makes it to where we would have really be away from home a lot because so much of the big money opportunities got taken away. It’s not that those were necessarily close to home, but they made it manageable to be a way from home for a few days and still be back to spend time with husband and kids. “We’re going to keep our fingers crossed that we will get to some of the ones that are left. We might do the Badlands Circuit ones. It’s just so hard to plan anything because just as soon as you do it may be gone at the end of the week because everything is always changing on a daily basis. It’s hard to say.” Bracket 2 belonged to 2019 NFR qualifier Lacinda Rose, who pocketed $6,000. She won the first round on her NFR mount RR Meradas Real Deal, a 12-year-old homebred gelding by Lover Boy Merada out of Zan Roan Jax, by Zan Gold Jackson. She won the third round aboard Isabella Quarter Horses’ Famous Illusion, a 7-year-old Dash Ta Fame gelding out of two-time NFR Champion TR Dash-ing Badger, by Mr Illuminator. Rose is currently ranked No. 27 with $11,980. The first two rounds of Bracket 3 were held in Houston and finished with a third round in Fort Worth on Friday night. Former NFR qualifier Jackie Ganter of Abilene, Texas, was leading the Bracket with $5,000 after winning the opening round and taking second in the second before the rodeo was shutdown. In Fort Worth, Ganter’s monster-sized 12-year-old gelding Howes A Tycoon, by Streakin Again out of RLJ Callinallangles, by Knock Their Socksoff,

wrapped up with a fourth-place finish. Ganter was credited with $5,750 total earnings from Rodeo Houston and moved to No. 25 in the standings with $13,054. Contestants in Bracket 4 made all three of their runs on Saturday with performances at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Two-time NFR

qualifier Shali Lord of Lamar, Colorado, used her talented rodeo string to her advantage. She alternated between the Spitz’s talented 11-year-old stallion Freckles Ta Fame (“Can Man”) and her own mare Frosted In Fame (“Cee Cee”) to earn $5,750. Can Man, by Dash Ta Fame out of Frenchmans Freckles, by Frenchmans Guy, was second in the first round and fourth in the third round with a slip at the second barrel. Cee Cee, a 10-year-old Dash Ta Fame mare out of the Sun Frost, Judge Cash mare Judges Fancy Frost, won the second round.“It was great!” she said. “It was great to be back. It was a lot for one day, but it all worked out good, just because I had two horses. I’m so thankful they finished it out and they decided to count the money toward the world standings. There’s nowhere else to go that you can run at $9,000 toward the world standings.” Lord said she didn’t have a lot of down time during the break between homeschooling her two children, riding young horses and ranch work. “We live 20 miles out of Lamar on a ranch,” she explained. “The biggest difference was not being able to go to the rodeos. We homeschooled and got a routine in that. There was a lot to be done here. It’s branding season and we normally have one big branding at the end of April. We changed that and did five small brandings with just a few helpers, maybe 10 at each. It worked out really well. It was nice to have them in little smaller groups, because Slade (her 7-year-old son) was able to rope more. “We’ve been riding a lot of colts. Josey Groves—she helped me at the NFR—has been here since February. We’ve got a lot of 3-year-olds and down that are getting started and we have a lot of 4- and 5’s that needed to be hauled and going. I felt like we were able to spend some time on them, getting them ready to go when it opened back up.” Lord, who currently sits No. 21 in the World Standings with $14,092, is entered in Coleman, Texas, and Woodward, Oklahoma, for next week. She’s also entered in Prescott, Arizona, over the Fourth of July and is hopeful that some of the Dakota rodeos over Cowboy Christmas will also go as planned. “After that, it’s a lot of unknown still,” she said. “To me it seems like things are opening up more down south in Texas and Oklaho-ma. The Dakotas never really shut down. Colorado and Wyoming, where most of the summer rodeos are, aren’t looking really good.” Bracket 5 featured three former WPRA World Champions and didn’t disappoint with all three rounds being won with 13-second runs. Two-time NFR qualifier Jessica Routier of Buffalo, South Dakota, and Gary Westergren’s Fiery Miss West (“Missy”) led the money earners with $5,250. Missy, a 9-year-old daughter of Firewater Frenchman out of Frenchmans Bo Dashus, by Royal Quick Dash, had been enjoy-ing the break and was at the breeding farm for her second embryo of the season when Routier got confirmation of the Super Series Finale two weeks prior to the event. “She was on a great, big long vacation,” laughed Routier. “We pulled an embryo out of her in March right after I got home. We were in the process of getting another one when we found out. Other than that, she was on a long, happy vacation.” The first embryo was by Routier’s stallion, Hot Corona Smooth-

ie, a son of High On Corona out of her great mare Especials Smoothie, by Especial. The other embryo is Westergren’s and is by Frenchmans Quarter Horses’ Absolut Frenchman. Routier worked around the last embryo flush to get Missy ready.“The day I found out I figured every day would matter, so I drove down there one day,” she explained. “We were just waiting for her to ovulate so I could bring her home. I was able to bring her home the next day and ride her all week. Seven days later I had to take her back and flush her. She’s trooper. I’ve flushed her before and she’s not one that it really affects energy wise. It doesn’t really have an effect on her. “She’s not one that gets super out of shape. She’s not one locked in a stall. She’s out in a great big pen and can run around. She gets a lot of self-induced exercise. She wasn’t as out of shape as one could be for not having been ridden in two and half months. ”Routier says she didn’t really know what to expect in Fort Worth. “I don’t know why I would have doubted her. She amazed me. I kind of knew by the third run she would be a little bit tired because it was so hot compared to what we are used to where we live and it was a 1,200 mile trip to get there and of course I had a lot of stuff going on so I didn’t get there any earlier to let her rest or anything. But I also know when she’s a little tired, she tries that much harder. I don’t like to abuse the fact that she’s like that, but I know if I really need it out of her, she’s going to give it to me. She’s just amazing that way.” Missy carried Routier to fourth on their first run, second on their second and tied for the win on their third. The Houston earning bumped them to No. 16 in the world with $16,435. Having most of April and May off wasn’t unusual for the team. “Normally, I try to take most of April and May off, so that wasn’t that different, but I did miss out on Kissimmee and Austin—those were big for me last year. It was kind of disappointing not being able to go to those,” she said. Homelife for the mother of five wasn’t much different during the shutdown either. “It really didn’t feel that different other than we didn’t have any basketball games or kids’ activities. We love going to all that stuff, but at the same time it was nice to be home. We kind of enjoyed the down time even though it wasn’t really down time because we have a lot going on at home.” Routier did enter Woodward and Coleman but will turn out of the latter due to a conflict with a rodeo closer to home. “I drew up in slack at Coleman, which is over a local rodeo that all five of my kids are entered in, so I’ll probably end up skipping that one,” she said. “But, I do plan on going to Woodward. After that I have no idea. I’m kind of banking on our South Dakota rodeos being able to happen. That would be nice because I wouldn’t have to go too far.” She says her NFR aspirations haven’t changed much even though COVID has made it more challenging. “It’s kind of the same as every year,” she said. “My plan has always been if it works, it works. I’m not going to force it. I’m not going to run my horse ragged running from one end of the country to the other trying to hit one rodeo. It’s such a crazy year. You just don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

People who are confident are sometimes seen as being arrogant; they have an air about them that comes from being confident that sometimes gets mistaken for arrogance.

How do you get confident? Well, I build my confidence from my training paying off with winning runs. My horses working well for me is what builds my confidence. Easier said than done at times! Knowledge is power! The more knowledge I have, the more confident I become. Why? Because if something doesn’t go well or as I had hoped in a competition run and I am confident in knowing how to fix it, then I’m okay with that. I work on it and see if I gained in my next competition. I’ve learned as much if not more from what’s gone wrong in runs than from what’s gone right. When you win you go away thinking “that was fun and exciting,” but you’re probably not thinking about what or how you’re going to ride in your next run. Now, if you aren’t happy with a run, you’re thinking about what you’re going to do to make your next run better. That’s if you’re not making excuses for yourself or your horse—“the ground was bad,” “I drew up bad on the ground,” etcetera. Now if you do have a nice run, pay attention to what you did with your horse preced-ing that run and try to duplicate that. It also helps to hang out with winners, they can rub off on you if they’re open and have good intentions. Most winners are like that.

Lindsay Schulz and her rocket fast mare Miss Eedie Stinson blew away the competi-tion at the Hermiston Classic in Hermiston, OR. Winning the Sat Open by 3 tenths then coming back to win the Sun Open by over 4 tenths of a second. Between Miss Eedie Stinson and her other horse SR Pure Crystal, Schulz ended up winning over $7k for her weekend so we caught up with her to ask her about her big win!

rr: Can you take us through your two runs? schulz: Out of this world fast... Eedie is impressively fast at the start, and literally blew me out the back door first stride out... best way to describe her at a turn, jake brake, let go of the acceleration and she will suck you back up the hill:)

brr: Explain what it felt like to make your runs each day and then realize you had won by 3 & 4 tenths? schulz: This mare has had talent all along, and I trust her with every ounce of my soul... to hear those times being announced was exhilarating.

brr: Tell us about Miss Eedie Stinson & what makes her so special?schulz: To tell you the obstacles this mare has faced in her lifetime would take a book, special is an understatement... from how she was placed in my hands thanks to Dalarie Phillipi, to many challenges that we have faced head on... thankful for the full team we have to keep us sharp and running better then ever.. she is my soul horse!!! Idaho Equine has played a huge roll, Jared Sharp and team... did I mention that you can run barrels then let my four year old ride her... sweet as the day is long.

brr: What funny quirks does Miss Eedie Stinson have? schulz: She is afraid of black spiders. no lie... this mare will time only like a two year old everytime.

By Tanya Randall “Crazy” and “really fun” is how Desirae Wheeler described her sweep of the $7,500-added Copper Spring Ranch sponsored futu-rity at The Classic, held May 28-31 in Silesia, Montana. Wheeler and her family-bred, 4-year-old gelding ImChocoJingleJangle (“Jangle”) collected $3,720 for the futurity sweep, plus $1,728 in open 1D earnings for a gross haul of $5,448. “It’s just unreal,” said the mother of three from Idaho Falls, Idaho. “I can’t stop smiling. It’s so fun. I’m so happy. I just wanted to get back in the saddle. I’ve been riding here, but I’m still rusty. When you don’t have runs, it affects you.” Bred by Wheeler’s father Merle Morgan, Jangle is by the family’s stallion A Chocolate Fury, a son of multiple barrel futurity champion sire Furyofthewind, and out of another homebred TMHot Flash, a daughter of The Goodbye Lane out of a Dash Ta Fame mare. Wheeler and Jangle previously won the Greg Olson Futurity and slot race earlier this year. Since then they’ve won rounds at the Dixie Classic and PCR Pink Cadillac futurities. Unfortunately, things did not go well at the Yeti Classic in Rocksprings, Wyoming, the week-end prior to The Classic. “I didn’t do well at Rock Springs, so I didn’t know what to expect,” said Wheeler. “I knew he could do it, but I just didn’t know how consistent (he could be). He’s really sensitive. Like I can overdo things with him really fast. I can push him really hard, but you can also do the opposite and push too much. There’s just a really fine line there as to what I can do with him. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.” In the first round of the futurity on Friday, Wheeler tried “to stay really calm” and “let him do his thing.” The result was a round win-ning 14.750 that also carried over to win the Open 1D. “There were a few little tiny mistakes that babies do, but I was happy…super, super happy he didn’t do what he did at Rock Springs,” she said. They followed with a second round winning 14.676 that also placed fifth in the Open 1D. “The second run I felt pretty confident, but I wanted to be safe,” she said. “I just wanted to make sure I had good barrels and kept them up because he was sitting so well. I don’t do well under pres-sure, so I just kind of turned it over to him. He didn’t go super-fast, but he did his thing. He worked nice and had pretty barrels.” On Sunday, without a futurity title on the line, Jangle turned in his best run of the weekend, a 14.469 to place second in the Open 1D. “I wanted to see what he could do, so I pushed him a lot more,” she said. “He just kept getting faster and gaining confidence. That gave me more confidence. He’s just an incredible animal.” Wheeler had also made a significant change before The Classic. She took a leap of faith and rode the trophy Roo Hide saddle, she had custom built after winning the Greg Olson, on Jangles for the first time in the futurity. “John Burgun, the maker, talked me through everything,” she said. “I was scared to death to try his saddle because it was a huge difference. I got a bigger seat. Everything was just different from what I’m used to. “Jangles is hard to ride. He will throw you forward really easily. That’s what I told John, so he was like, ‘I’m going to make it just right for you because I want you to ride in the saddle.’ I actually changed it over to my other futurity colt, Pebbles. She’s super nice, but she’s also very ratey. So, I tried it on her and I kept barrels up. It was unbelievable the difference. So, I thought, ‘Let’s try and see how it is on him.’ It’s a remarkable difference on how I can ride in that saddle versus my other saddles. I stay out of their way. I’m so thankful for his knowledge on that saddle. It’s made an incredible difference.”

Wheeler, who was extremely happy to be back going, commended the UBRC on the production of The Classic. “I loved it,” she said. “I love going to their races. They’re very organized and fast. They get you in-and-out. They’re super nice people. Their announcer, Ross, is absolutely amazing. I love having that energy. It was a great facility.” During the shutdown, Wheeler stayed plenty busy with her horses and helping her two junior-high aged children with online learning. However, she said she missed the social interaction. “I tried to keep myself busy with kids and horses, but it did take a toll on me,” she said. “I missed my friends and having people coming over. You need social interaction. I love that face to face, come and ride with me; it was a hard time for me.” With the current civil unrest, Wheeler is unsure of when and where she’ll go to her next futurity.

Pandemic Forces Cancellation of 2020 Cheyenne Frontier Days Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) announced that public health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic have forced the cancellation of the 2020 festival scheduled for July 17-26. This decision was made in conjunction with the other major summertime events in Wyoming and is in accordance with Governor Mark Gordon’s direction and state and local health orders. This is the first time in the 124-year history of the iconic celebration of Western culture that Cheyenne Frontier Days™ will not be held. Commonly referred to as the “Daddy of em’ All®”, Cheyenne Frontier Days™ is the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration. Rodeo contestants rely on the Cheyenne event to be one of the largest payouts on the annual PRCA rodeo circuit. It also features some of country music’s biggest stars performing before sold-out crowds at the Frontier Nights® concerts. “This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but in the end, it was the only choice,” Tom Hirsig, Cheyenne Frontier Days™ CEO said. “The health and safety of our fans, volunteers, contestants, first responders, healthcare workers and everyone in our community is the only thing that matters right now. The only responsible decision was

to put their safety first,” General Chairman Jimmy Dean Siler added. Hirsig said CFD knows how devastating this decision will be for many fans who return year after year, as well as first-timers planning to come because “the Daddy” is on their bucket list. The cancellation will also have a severe economic impact in the community. Hundreds of thousands of people attend CFD concerts, rodeo performanc-es and the related Western events each year, contributing tens of millions of dollars to the local economy. In 2019, visitors spent over $28 million during Cheyenne Frontier Days™’ 10-day run, generating over $1 million in local and state taxes, more than $5 million for overnight lodging, and almost $9 million for retail businesses. It also created over 300 jobs resulting in $5 million in wages and salaries during the event. “I know what this means for rodeo in Cheyenne,” Governor Gordon said. “The finan-cial and emotional impact this announcement has on our community, rodeo fans, and especially the contestants, is immense. But it is the right thing to do, and together we are committed to making 2021 the best Daddy of em’ All ever.” In addition, the event raises funds for the CFD Old West Museum, a year-round attraction that showcases artifacts celebrating Cheyenne Frontier Days™ history and Western culture. Cheyenne Frontier Days™ also supports The Volunteer Crisis Fund, which provides emergency monetary assistance to event volunteers when needed and the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Memorial Foundation, which provides scholarships for volunteers and their dependents. The Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Foundation, Inc. was recently established to support the charitable and educational aspects of the celebra-tion. Soon after the “pandemic” hit, I quit reading the newspaper. It was hard be-cause I really, really like to read the comics! LOL! I quit watching the news on tv several years ago. Why? They don’t have my best interests at heart. Their

words are slanted to try to convince me of their agenda. And I have experience with them. For 25 years I produced the Fizz Bomb Barrel Futurity. For 25 years, they came and took pictures and wrote up stories. For...25...YEARS... without fail... they used words to describe what we were doing and it wasn’t even close. I would call them and tell them. Their response? Literary license. If they were doing that with what I know something about, do you think they may slant any other issue? Of course they do! Sooooo, how about we get our information from the One who knows every-

thing? God has our best interests at heart. He’s not a fear monger. He loves us so much and He will show us things to come. And it will be the truth. He will protect us and guide us through anything and everything. This week, read Psl. 23 every day. You’ll be encouraged and uplifted! Can you say that about watching the news?
