Venezia da sempre è

considerata il croceviadell’Oriente, “Porto

del Levante”: con esso hastretto un rapporto privile-giato molto profondo. Unrapporto prima di tutto com-merciale: rotte, mercanzie,fondaci sparsi in tutti i domi-ni dello “Stato da Mar”, finoa Costantinopoli e al Me-diterraneo; ma anche un rap-porto che sfocia negli usi ecostumi, nel pensiero e nel-l’arte. Non si contano davve-ro le influenze orientaleg-gianti presenti a Venezia cheancora ci svelano i misterinascosti della città.

port of the East, is linked tothe it by a close and privilegedrelationship, which wasmainly commercial - withroutes, goods, staples stret-ching in every sea colony asfar as Constantinople and theMediterranean -, but whichalso influenced uses andcustoms, the thinking and art.Indeed, Venice is imbuedwith manifold influencesfrom the Eastern world,which constantly unveil itshidden secrets. Uno di questi è rappresenta-to dai rilievi tondeggianti cheornano le facciate dei piùimportanti edifici veneziani:le “patere”. Sono piccolesculture esterne spesso posi-zionate al primo piano deipalazzi e dunque, per nonlasciarsi scappare la possibi-lità di poterle ammirarementre si cammina per lecalli, è necessario “alzare” latesta qua e là. Questi rilievi,realizzati prevalentemente inmarmo greco, dal colore gri-giastro, o in pietra d’Istria od’Aurisina, non sono moltograndi -il diametro varia daun minimo di 20 cm ad unmassimo di 80- e vanno inse-riti in quell’insieme di scul-ture di gusto e influenzabizantina che tra il X e il XIIsecolo d.C. si sono diffusi intutto il bacino del mediterra-neo sino in Asia Minore. Lepatere raffigurano per lo piùquel curioso “bestiario” cherisale ad uno dei periodi piùfecondi della storia dell’im-maginario europeo: il Me-dioevo. Sembra che le patereassicurassero fortuna, bene-fici o protezione a quellefamiglie che le esponevanosulle facciate esterne deipalazzi. Ecco perché se netrovano un po’ in tutti isestieri della città, anche seoccorre spesso una buonavista per scorgerle. Nellepatere ricorrono circa 150temi iconografici ma, nellafattispecie, il motivo è ani-male o vegetale-floreale. Ilsoggetto più riprodotto è l’a-quila ritratta nell’atto di bec-care il capo o agguantare unalepre: si tratta di un simboli-smo caro al periodo medie-vale, l’aquila è infatti simbo-lo della virtù che trionfa sulvizio, in particolare la lussu-ria, raffigurata dalla lepre.Altre figure rappresentate

They canbe noticed and admired onlyby now and then looking upto the sky while walkingthroughout the “calli” (Venicesmall alleys). These reliefs,mainly made of greyish Greekmarble or of Istria andAurisina stone, are relativelylarge – their diameter variesfrom a minimum of 20 cm toa maximum of 80 cm. Theycan be included among thesculptures of Byzantine tasteand influence, that spread inthe entire Mediterraneanbasin as far as Asia betweenX and XII century A.D.. Thepateras mainly portray thecurious bestiary that goesback to one of the most fruit-ful periods in the history ofthe European myth, theMiddle Ages. They were saidto bring good luck, benefitsand protection to the familiesthat made them erect on theexternal façades of palaces.That is why they can be foundin every “Sestiere” (districts ofVenice), although a good eye-sight is needed to spot them.There are around 150 icono-graphic themes normallyrecurring in the pateras, butin this specific case animals,plants and flowers are themost reproduced ones. Themost recurrent subject is theeagle portrayed while peckingat the head of a hare or whilegrasping it, which is a symbo-lism precious to the MiddleAges. Indeed the eaglesymbolises virtue triumphingover vice, in particular overlust, represented by the hare.Further subjects are birds,above all wading birds, fla-mingos and cranes ravelling

Hence the Eastis clearly the land of myth. The iconographic origin ofthe pateras can be traced backto a series of Eastern andByzantine images – like theeagle – that can be alsoencountered in the externalfaçades of the major Gothiccathedrals. Nine extraordinary examplesof pateras can be seen justabove the second-floor win-dow of the Ca’Vitturi palace(at number 5246) in CampoSanta Maria Formosa, not too

Esempi visi-bili e di pregevole fatturasono quelli di CampoS.Maria Formosa, poco lon-tano dal Ponte di Rialto, nel

THE MISSING LIONSAmong the various examples of pateras in Venice, a careful observer willcertainly not fail to recognize the symbol of Venice: the winged lion.However the number of lions occurring in the small stone sculptures is limi-ted, if considering the significance of the St. Mark’s symbol. The reason isto be found in history chronicles. In 1797, only seventeen days after thefall of the “Serenessima” (Republic of Venice), the newborn Municipalityissued the regulation under which the Committee for public health orde-red the removal of all the symbols of tyranny present in the city. Underthis iconoclastic fury a group of stonemason, enlisted by the Municipalityitself, demolished some 4,000 lions in few hours. There are only few effi-g i e s still surviving today, as the Lion of St. Mark placed

above the entrance portal of the “Arsenale”,and the one placed on the famous clock-

tower in St. Mark’s square. Further still exi-sting images, thanks to an oversight ofthe “tagiapiera” (Venetian word forstonemason) can be found in less visi-ted places.

I LEONI SCOMPARSIFra le patere disseminate a Venezia,

l’attento osservatore riconosceràanche l’icona della città: il leone alato. In

realtà il numero dei leoni presenti in questepiccole sculture in pietra è esiguo rispetto l’im-

portanza del simbolo di S. Marco. Il motivo è regi-strato dalle cronache. Alla fine della Repubblica di Venezia, nel 1797, laneonata Municipalità, dopo solo 17 giorni dalla caduta della Serenissima,emise un’ordinanza con la quale il Comitato della Salute Pubblica ordi-nava la rimozione di tutti gli stemmi presenti in città raffiguranti “l’insegnadella tirannia”. In una furia iconoclasta una squadra di scalpellini assol-dati dalla Municipalità distrusse in poche ore qualcosa come quattromi-la leoni nella sola città di Venezia. Tra le poche effigie sopravvissute cifurono il leone marciano posto sopra il portale d'ingresso dell'Arsenale equello sulla famosa Torre dell'orologio in piazza San Marco. Gli altri, visibilispesso nei luoghi meno frequentati, si salvarono perché i “tagiapiera” (gliscalpellini) non li videro.

VENICE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN LAZARETTOSFrom 31st March to 13th June 2004, the exhibition “Venezia e i lazzaretti mediterranei”will be held in Venice in the monumental rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana

(Libreria Sansoviniana)), in occasion of the project “RotteMediterranee e baluardi della sanità” (Mediterranean routes andhealth bulwarks). The invention of the Venetian lazarettos derivedfrom the compromise between the mercantile pragmatism of theRepublic of Venice – that needed the trade with the East for itsdevelopment – and the need to safeguard public health from theepidemics spreading from the very East. The exhibition studies themonuments present throughout the Venetian territory (three lazaret-tos) with an historic, socio-historic, sanitary and historic-economicapproach. Maps of sailing directions, herbals, fashion books, mer-chants’ tariffs, maps of the lazarettos, images of ships and portsrecreate the scene and the protagonists of the mercantile society,which enabled the meeting and development of civilizations.

VENEZIA E I LAZZARETTI MEDITERRANEIDal 31 marzo fino al 13 giugno 2004, nell’ambito del progetto “Rottemediteranee e baluardi di sanità”, si tiene a Venezia la mostra“Venezia e i lazzaretti mediterranei”, allestita nelle SaleMonumentali della Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (LibreriaSansoviniana). L’invenzione dei lazzaretti veneziani fu il frutto del

compromesso fra il pragmatismo mercantile della Serenissima, che per il proprio svi-luppo non poteva rinunciare ai commerci con il Levante, e la necessità di difendere lasalute pubblica dai morbi epidemici che venivano proprio dall’Oriente. La mostra pro-pone la lettura delle testimonianze monumentali del territorio veneziano (i tre lazzaret-ti) con un approccio non solo storiografico, ma anche storico-sociale, sanitario e sto-rico-economico. Portolani ed erbari, libri di moda e tariffe dei mercanti, piante di laz-zaretti, immagini di navi e di porti ricreano la scena e i protagonisti della civiltà mer-cantile che ha consentito l’incontro e lo sviluppo delle civiltà.

Patrick Mimram has gra-dually surpassed everyartistic boundary, as it

is clear from “Brahamâtic”-on display until 4th July -organized by the “QueriniStampalia Foundation” inVenice. For the exhibition theFrench artist took inspirationfrom his last journey inDecember in India, a place oflong-standing spiritual andmythical tradition, as opposedto the Western modernity.Mimram presents manifoldpatterns of artistic expression:painting, photography andmusic are aesthetically unitedin the use of technology,which he firmly believes to becrucial for artistic creationand communication. Thecombining of old and mo-dern, East and West, classicand avant-garde artistic expe-rience emerges from thedichotomic choice of displa-ying both the encaustic pain-ting and the video in the sameexhibition. While the encau-stic painting is an ancientpainting technique - develo-ped by the Greeks that requi-res particular manual skilland that consisted in usingcolours melted into heatedwax, rendering them resistantto water and light hence inde-lible and immutable - thevideo throws the spectatorinto a completely differentperceptive experience. Mim-ram’s paintings, even the onesprevious to his journey inIndia, portray oneiric scene-ries, mysterious worlds, realelements and abstract memo-ries emerging from the uncon-scious, imaginary objects liketotems, astral and geometricshapes, eyes, hands, mouths,crosses, stylised figures, sic-kles, which at the same time

Lo si può verificare in“Brahmâtic”, la mostra alle-stita al terzo piano dellaFondazione Querini Stam-palia a Venezia (sino al 4luglio), dove il “multimedia-le” Mimran prende spuntodall’ultimo viaggio compiutolo scorso dicembre in India,terra dell’antica tradizionespirituale e del fantastico,contraltare della modernitàoccidentale. L’artista france-se presenta non una, mamolteplici modalità espressi-ve: pittura, fotografia, musi-ca unite nell’utilizzo dellatecnologia, nella convinzioneche quest’ultima serva all’ar-te in termini di creazione e dicomunicazione. La fusione tra antico emoderno, tra oriente ed occi-dente, tra esperienza artisticaconsueta e avanguardia,appare già nella scelta, percerti versi dicotomica, diproporre in una stessa instal-lazione il “dipinto ad encau-sto” ed il “video”. Non è un caso che il titolodella mostra richiami pro-prio la cosmogonia indu:Brahmâ, il dio demiurgodalle quattro teste riassumein sé l’origine del mondo, ilprincipio creativo dell’uni-verso e la metafora di tuttociò che ha vita dalla potenzadel suo pensiero (l’arte?).

Open since September 27 2002, Cube Gallery came about with thecollaboration of Massimiliano Bugno and Paolo Vincenzi, after 12years of experience with Bugno Art Gallery. Cube Gallery differs fromthe former in its dedication for the most part to artists emerging fromthe Venetian scene both local and international. Its intention is torestore the relationship between young artists and private galleries,who have in the last few years given preference to established artists,with few exceptions. The aim of the gallery is also to be space of con-vergence and comparison between these artists who in the past havehad difficulty in finding spaces in which to gather and exhibit, whichmeant they leaned towards a sometimes unproductive individualism.

Luca Giordano’s “Pala”(altarpiece - 1659) to be found in the “CappellaVendramin” (Vendramin Chapel) in “San Pietro di Castello”, belongs to theNeapolitan artist’s early production, which has been influenced by his apprenti-ceship served in the studio of Jusepe de Ribera, also nicknamed “LoSpagnoletto” (The Spaniard). The Venetian “Pala” of Giordano reveals two maininfluences deriving from his Italo-Ispanic master: the dramatic realism typical ofCaravaggio emerging in the images of the souls in Purgatory and the monumen-tal tendency of Velasquez clearly emerging in the bright colours of the“Madonna col Bambino” (Madonna and Child)

Realizzata attorno al 1650, la pala di Luca Giordano della cappella Vendramin inSan Pietro di Castello è opera assai precoce del Maestro napoletano, influenza-to in quei primi anni di attività dall'apprendistato presso lo studio di Jusepe deRibera, detto Lo Spagnoletto. Del maestro italo-ispanico la pala veneziana delGiordano riporta sia il realismo drammaticamente caravaggesco della primamaniera, nella resa delle figure delle anime purganti, sia la monumentalitàmutuata da Velasquez, pienamente espressa, anche attraverso un colorismosquillante, nella raffigurazione della Madonna col Bambino.

The ancient “San Pietrodi Castello” (St.Peter’sCathedral) Cathedral,

once patriarchal see, stands inthe first settlement area of thecity in the only “campo”where grass still grows. Todayit is only a peripheral area,but originally it was the eco-nomic, legal and civil centre:the very heart of Venice, notincluded in usual tourist rou-tes and rarely visited by tou-rists. The marvellous Palladianchurch has an ample andluminous interior and cer-tainly deserves a thoroughvisit. San Pietro was firstlybishop’s see, under thepatriarchy of Grado from 775to 1451, and later cathedraland patriarchal centre until1807 - when the honorifictitle was given to San Marco(St. Mark), which up to thenhad been the private Doge’schapel. This church, built in the 9th cen-tury, was renovated between theend of 1300 and the beginning ofthe 14th century according to lategothic models. In 1804 the churchwas extensively restructured underthe supervision of architect DavideRossi. These works were so costlythat, after escaping the Napoleonicexpropriations, the church founditself having to sell off many of itsworks of art. In 1930, after renova-tion and restoration works, thesplendid wooden ceiling shapedlike a ship's hull was returned to itsformer splendour. Latin cross, three naves and issurmounted by a large chapel.The main decoration datesback to the XVIIth century,after the fire which destroyedthe furniture and the treasu-res of the ancient church. Themain altar (1649), built afterthe drawing of BaldassareLonghena, is noteworthy forits polychrome carved marble.It contains an urn with theashes of San Lorenzo Gius-tiniani, the first Patriarch ofVenice. The original charm ofthis ancient church is furtherenhanced by the presence ofthe “Cattedra di S. Pietro” (St.Peter’s throne), placed in theright aisle and traditionallyconsidered the Saint’s thronein Antakya. St. Peter’s churchis also protagonist of an oldlegend. Giustina RenierMichiel tells that in 944,during the marriage cere-mony of twelve couplestaking place in this church, agroup of pirates from Triestekidnapped the brides andstole their dowries. After alegendary see battle, theVenetians were able to savethe maidens. Ever since, thatfortunate victory has beencelebrated as the “Festa delleMarie” (the feast-day dedica-ted to those kidnapped girls),day in which the Doge used towalk in procession to “SantaMaria Formosa” church. Inthat parish lived the “cassele-ri” - craftsmen specialized inthe production of votive offe-rings –, the brotherhood thatmostly contributed to therescue of the maidens. During that day twelve mai-dens were chosen to recallthose events. They had towalk throughout the cityrichly dressed at the Sestieri’sexpense. That celebration washeld with magnificence formany years and was abolishedabout four centuries later,after the tragic war ofChioggia which had deprivedVenice of all its economicresourses.

It is oneof the earliest of eight churchesbuilt in the lagoon during the 7thcentury. In the 12th century it wasrebuilt in the form of a Greekcross. The shape underlines theresettlement begun in 1492 byMauro Codussi, the leading archi-tect of the early VenetianRenaissance. Codussi left it unfinis-hed on his death. The Church and the Convent of

San Salvador have witnessed thebirth of this city, through the period

of the intensive trade and commerce of the16th century right up to today, developinginto a symbol of avant-garde technologicalinnovation. The history of the former con-vent of San Salvador, of its two cloisters andof the refectory that gave a home to theAugustinian friars, is Venetian history.Rebuilt to its current state between 1506and 1534, the ecclesiastic structure wascompletely integrated into the hustle andbustle of the city. Splendid in its architecto-nic complex and in the interior decorations,halfway through the 1980s became asymbol for communications in the futurewith set up of the new telephone exchangewith digital electronic commutator. This isjust a first step. According to widespread opinion, the merit for havingpromoted laceworking towards the end of the 16th cen-tury goes to Dogaressa Morosina Morosini, wife of Doge

Marino Grimani; but already more than a century earlier, in1843, King Richard III of England donned "wondrous laceworks" from Venice's lagoon on his the coronation day. Thebest-renowned characteristic is its needlework - particularly the"air stitch" or "Burano stitch" - which differs from those ofVenice, Chioggia and Pellestrina. Outside the small one- or two-storey houses, Buranese women sit together while their handswork deft magic, creating wondrous laces that, in olden times,were the ornaments of kings and queens. For his coronationday, Louis 14th of France had a collar made of white hairs, MaryTudor of England and the Queen of France, Caterina De Medici(1519-1589). At the beginning of the 19th century, after beingthe pride of Venice for over 300 years, the art of lacemaking wasin declineaceworking was reborn. The school continues its mission and the work of the skilledhands conti on the inhabitants' main industry - fishing - weredevastating. Poverty was severe and many families were reducedto the point of starvation. It was Queen Margherita who deci-ded to restore the art of laceworking on the island. To do this,an elderly lady of Burano the "Cencia Scarpariola" who couldstill remember almost all the traditional stitches, was entrustedwith teaching the younger generation the ancient art. From outside, the artistic engraving studio “Fei Toso”, seems simply abeautiful house facing the ‘Ramo Conterie’. However the window

engravings reveal the real activity lying behind mere appearance. For sixtyyears, the Fei Toso family has produced marvellous objects that show howhandicraft can become art. Vases, glasses, bonbonnières, Venetian bottles

engraved with traditional techniques, andthe restauration and production of anti-que mirrors make clear how any object isnot only unique, but a true work of art.

Visto da fuori, lo stu-dio di incisione artistica Fei Toso, a Murano, sembrerebbe una

delle belle case che si affacciano su Ramo Conterie, se le incisioni allefinestre non rivelassero l’attività che si svolge tra le mura. Una formad’artigianato che diventa arte, attraverso le opere che escono da ses-sant’anni dalle mani della famiglia Fei Toso: i vasi, i bicchieri, lebomboniere, i flaconi veneziani incisi con le tecniche tradizionali,uniti all’attività di restauro e produzione di specchi antichi, rendonoogni oggetto molto più che unico. Lo rendono un’opera d’arte.

In November 2003, at the Goldoni theatre inVenice, the famous architect Renzo Piano and

the ballet-dancer Carla Fracci were awarded thebronze “La Danzatrice” (The Dancer) in occa-sion of the prestigious Prize “Una vitanella musica” (an entire life inmusic). Giorgio Bartoli’s work of artis threadlike, essential and delicate,almost at the limit of static harmony.Its stylized fisionomy is imbued withan harmonic balance of strength andmovement. “La Danzatrice”, almostfifty centimetres high, is the artistic

creation of a scrupulous and inspired artist. His masterpiecesare exhibited at the art gallery of the Hotel La Fenice et desArtistes in S.Marco.

Al teatro Goldoni di Venezia, nel novembre dell’annoscorso, veniva consegnata al famoso architetto

Renzo Piano e alla ballerina classica Carla Fracci l’o-pera in bronzo “La danzatrice” dello scultore vene-ziano Giorgio Bortoli nell’ambito del prestigiosopremio “Una vita nella musica”. Filiforme, essen-ziale, leggera quasi al limite dell’equilibrio stati-co: una fisionomia stilizzata ma permeata di unarmonico equilibrio tra forza e movimento, l’o-pera, circa 50 centimetri, rappresenta il segno di unoscultore attento ed ispirato. Le sue opere sono espo-ste alla galleria dell’Hotel La Fenice et des Artistes aS. Marco.

One cannot leave Venice without having tasted ‘sarde insaòr’ (sardines marinated in onions): a Venetian dishonce cooked by poor families but still prepared on

Feast Days when citizens meet to celebrate tradition. On the3rd Sunday of July during the ‘Festa del Redentore’ for exam-ple, ‘sarde alla giudia’ are widely appreciated even by poshguests. A dish that is not only popular but also “ritual”. It’s ori-gin is emblematic of how different cultures once mingled inVenice becoming a single entity. The recipe of thishighly nutritious fish consists in flouring the sardi-nes and then frying them in oil. When thefish is cooked, brown some finely slicedonions separately and when it is ready addto it some white wine and vinegar in diffe-rent quantities. The marinated onions cannow be added to the fried sardinesthat are arranged in layers in a deeppot. The large number ofVenetian Jews living inthe Doge’s city thusinvented a dish that could bepreserved for more than a week.The ‘sarde in saòr’ can be bestsavoured after having been marinatedfor three days, when the fish has taken upthe sweet-and-sour flavour of the onionsand vinegar. The recipe my be enrichedwith raisins and pine-nuts, often found also inother dishes.The mixture of all these ingredients adds importance tothis singular dish rendering it a rich plate that combines fla-vours belonging to medieval, Byzantine and Roman tradition.While the ‘sweet-and-sour’ is typical of the Roman andMedieval gastronomic tradition of Judaic origin, the raisinsrecall the Byzantine one. Different characteristics encompassedby the Venetian gastronomic tradition.

Non si può passare per Venezia senza aver assapo-rato il gusto delle sarde in saòr. Piattopovero della cucina veneziana, è ancora in uso nelle

ricorrenze dove il “popolo” si incontra con la tradizione. È ilcaso della Festa del Redentore, la terza domenica di luglio, nellaquale le “sarde alla giudia” riacquistano la loro dignità anche fragli ospiti “signori”. Insomma: piatto popolare e "rituale" nelcontempo. L’origine delle sarde in saòr (in sapore) è forse l’em-blema della mescolanza delle diverse culture che un tempo a

Venezia si facevano cosa sola. Le sarde, pesce ricco dipreziosissimi elementi nutritivi, veniva e viene infa-

rinato e fritto nell'olio. A cottura avvenuta si toglie ilpesce vi si aggiunge della cipolla affettata sottilmente.Quando la cipolla imbiondisce, si spegne con vino

bianco e aceto in proporzioni diverse. Il tuttoviene versato sul pesce fritto, dis-

posto a strati in un recipientedi terracotta abbastanza profondo.

Gli ebrei veneziani, presenti in grannumero nella città dei dogi, inventavano

così un piatto che si potesse conserva-re per almeno una settimana senzanecessità delle moderne ghiacciaie.

Un piatto che va gustato solo dopo tregiorni di marinatura, quando il pesce fritto

assorbe gli aromi della cipolla e dell’aceto con-notandolo di agrodolce. Non è poi raro trovare

col saór altri ingredienti, come l'uvetta di Corintoe pinoli, variante non ortodossa ma presenteanche in altri cibi. Queste aggiunte servono ad

aumentare la dignità, a farne un piatto ricco secondo unatradizione delle dolcificazioni medioevali, e ancor prima,

bizantine e romane. Insomma l'agrodolce fa pensare alla tradi-zione gastronomica romana e medievale di matrice giudaica,mentre l'uvetta rimanda agli usi bizantini. Il tutto mediato attra-verso la cultura gastronomica veneziana.

Non erano passati che pochi giorni dalla sua nomina in par-rocchia all’Anzolo Raffaele, che don Beniamino dovette farei conti con il primo problema dal suo insediamento: ognimattina, appena varcata la soglia della sacrestia, tutto erasottosopra. Le tonache, i paramenti sacri, perfino calici eampolle erano stati spostati. Era il giugno del 1720: il vec-chio prete, don Pietro, era morto da poco, improvvisamen-te, lasciando al giovane vicario le incombenze di chiesa eparrocchia. Le cose si trascinarono per una settimana,dopodiché il prete ne parlò al sacrestano: "C'è qualcunoche entra per vedere se ci sia qualcosa di prezioso. Ci fer-meremo qui, stanotte". E così fecero. Al primissimo albeg-giare, ecco apparire una figura nella chiesa: don Pietro, ilprete morto! Che entra in sacrestia, infila vesti e paramenti,esce col calice in mano ed inizia a dire messa, da solo. "Quabisogna chiedergli che cosa fa, o se non ha bisogno di qual-cosa", bisbiglia il pretino al sagrestano, e lentamente va asedersi su una panca delle prime file. Non appena, secondoliturgia, arriva per l'assemblea il momento di rispondere,don Beniamino prende il coraggio a quattro mani e lo fa adalta voce: "Amen!". Il vecchio prete si gira: "Bravo - gli dice- è proprio di questo che ho bisogno. Di dire sette messe,perché sono morto e mi mancavano da dire sette messe, giàcommissionate, per le anime del purgatorio. Così ho biso-gno che tu venga per sette giorni, a rispondermi per settevolte". Così fu fatto. E l'anima del vecchio prete, riappaci-ficata con se stessa, potè riposare in pace.

Only a few days had gone by since his appointment to theAnzolo Raffaele parish, when Father Beniamino had to facethe first problem since his installation: every morning, as soonas he stepped in the sacristy, he found everything topsy-turvy.The robes, sacred vestments, and even the chalices andampoules had been moved. It was June 1720: Father Pietro,the old priest, had died recently, suddenly, leaving the youngvicar the duties of the church and the parish. Things draggedon this way for a week, after which the priest exposed thesituation to the sexton: "Somebody keeps coming in, in searchof something valuable. Let’s stay here tonight". This they did.At the first rays of dawn a figure appeared in the church:Father Pietro, the dead priest! He entered the sacristy, put onthe vestments, came out with the chalice in hand and startedto say mass by himself. "We need to ask him what he’s doing,or if he needs something", whispered the priest to the sexton,and slowly, he went to sit on a bench in one of the first rows.As soon as—according to liturgy—it was time for theassembly to respond, Father Beniamino gathered up all hiscourage and said "Amen!" out loud. The old priest turnedaround: "Good,” he told him, “this is just what I need: to sayseven masses, because when I died I still needed to say sevenmasses, already commissioned, for the souls in purgatory. So Ineed you to come to mass for seven days to respond seventimes”. This was done. And the old priest’s soul, thus appea-sed, was finally able to rest in peace.

How to steal the essence of a city in only twenty-four hours? How to sense the diverse aspects, diffe-rences and contradictions which characterise it? Perhaps by rushing from one side to the other of thecity, by visiting markets, meeting places and rendezvous, by enjoying both moments for pleasure andreflection, by visiting places of culture, by taking part to religious processions and by experiencingeverything that in an agglomerate of houses and palaces in a particular geographic context, consti-tutes a city. All of this in a very short time: 24 hours. That is the challenge that the photographic group“Leica” was invited to embrace by the department for culture of the local Municipality. A challengebetween Bolzano and 17 photographers, that took place on a hot summer day in 2003.

Come rubare l'anima di una città in ventiquattro ore? Come coglierne i diversi aspetti, le differenze,le contraddizioni che la distinguono, correndo da una parte all'altra del tessuto urbano, i mercati, iluoghi di appuntamento e i ritrovi, i momenti di svago e di riflessione, i luoghi della cultura, le processioni religiose e quant'altro forma quell’in-sieme di persone e rapporti che in un agglomerato di case e palazzi, in un determinato contesto geografico forma un’entità chiamata, appun-to, città? E tutto questo in 24 ore, un arco di tempo brevissimo. Questa è la sfida che il Gruppo Fotografico Leica ha raccolto su invitodell'Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Bolzano. Una sfida, tra la città e 17 fotografi, svoltasi in un caldo, torrido giorno dell'estate del 2003.

April 12th saw the commemoration of the 80th anniversary ofthe death of Eleonora Duse, and Asolo, the city that the“Divine” of the international theatre has chosen as her lastdwelling, celebrates this day with a number of initiatives. Thetheatre and music project “Centrorizzonti” has dedicated tothe great actress the project “Women Queens Ladies Divine”.This anniversary will be the opportunity to show the result of therestoration of one of Eleonora Duse’s most famous dresses – alight-blue silk dress. Moreover, part of the rich collection ofobjects – photographs and documents that are not includedin the permanent exhibition of the city’s museum – can be vie-wed in the suggestive wing dedicated to the artist. Themuseum has also programmed to publish part of her originalletters. The exhibition “Eleonora’s apartments” will perma-nently enrich the area of the Museum dedicated to the artist.

With the blossoming of the first wisteria thenoble Venetians of old went up river totheir summer residences. The Gradenigo,Pisani, Widmann and Rezzonico familiesdressed up their country dwellings on theBrenta Riviera as if they were palaces onthe Grand Canal, exploding into thegrandeur for which there was too littleroom in the cramped spaces of the city.The villas on the Brenta Riviera, therefore,represent the splendour of the MostSerene Republic. Between art and history, along the route traced by the eighteenth centuryVenetian canal boat, from March to October there are pleasurable excur-sions by boat to the Venetian Villas along the Brenta Riviera. The excursionprogrammes offer the trip up the river from Padua to Venice (through Strà,Dolo, Mira, Oriago, Malcontenta, Fusina and then Venice) and from Veniceto Padua (through Fusina, Malcontenta, Oriago, Mira, Dolo Strà and thenPadua) and guided tours of the interiors of some Villas. The standard whole-day excursion from about 09.00 to 18.00 includes the trip, the guide, admis-sion to three Venetian Villas, a break at the sixteenth century Antichi Moliniand an optional lunch either on board or in a restaurant along the Riviera.

Tra arte e storia, lungo le rotte degli antichi burchielli veneziani del ‘700, ognianno, dal mese di marzo fino a ottobre, si effettuano delle piacevolissimeescursioni in battello tra le Ville Venete della Riviera del Brenta. I programmidelle escursioni prevedono la navigazione da Padova verso Venezia ( Strà ,Dolo, Mira, Oriago, Malcontenta, Fusina, Venezia ) o da Venezia versoPadova (Venezia, Fusina, Malcontenta, Oriago, Mira, Dolo, Strà) e la visitainterna guidata di alcune Ville Venete. L'escursione standard di intera gior-nata, dalle ore 09.00 alle ore 18.00 circa, comprende la navigazione, laguida, gli ingressi a tre Ville Venete, la sosta agli Antichi Molini del '500 e ilpranzo facoltativo a bordo o in un ristorante lungo la Riviera del Brenta.
