Just over 200 years havegone by since the fall ofVenice’s Serenissima Re
public while some 1,305years have elapsed since herfirst Doge, Pauluccio Ana-festo, was elected. Venice wasthus a leading player on theEuropean and world stage foreleven centuries – an unparal-leled achievement for anystate. Such extraordinary lon-gevity stemmed from manyfactors and many were theevents that contributed to for-ging the character of theVenetians and the city itself:the lagoon environment - pro-tective yet difficult to control -the hostility of enemies fromboth land and sea, theVenetians’ awareness of beingdifferent, to name but a few.These factors and morebrought a propensity towardscommitment, action and soli-darity among the Serenis-sima's inhabitants and alsoimplanted over the years astrong consciousness of theState. Such sentiments engen-dered a respect for all the“public assets”, seen as a civicand collective possession asopposed to the private owners-hip. The history of Veniceshows that the political incli-nation of the government wasalways to pursue the publicinterest. Even the peoples'assemblies, when they were incharge of running the State,proved capable of taking ap-parently conflicting decisionsdepending on the practicalrequirements. For their part, the political par-ties became united in facinghazards or promoting new

THE DOGARESSA In the Serenissima Republic, after the Doge himself, the next
dignitary in line was his wife, the Dogaressa. From the
Promissione of 1229 she too made her entrance into the Palazzo,
she too crowned with a ducal “corno”. Over time, though, the
ceremony became so elaborate and expensive that in 1645 the
Republic decreed its abolishment. The dogaressa kept her posi-
tion and title, but could no longer don the ducal cap, a prohibi-
tion that was to last until the fall of the Republic with one sole
exception: after the conquest of Morea in 1694 and the conse-
quent coronation of Elisabetta Querini Valier.
LA DOGARESSADopo il Doge, la dogaressa fu la più importante figura rappre-
sentativa dello Stato. Dalla Promissione del 1229 fa anch'essa il
suo ingresso nel palazzo e viene coronata col corno ducale. La
cerimonia diventa nel tempo così dispendiosa che la
Repubblica nel 1645, durante la guerra di Candia, la elimina. La
dogaressa mantiene la sua posizione ed il titolo ma non porta
più il corno ducale in testa. La legge proibitiva dura fino alla
caduta della Repubblica con una sola eccezione: 1'incorona-
zione di Elisabetta Querini Valier, dopo le gloriose vittorie del
Morosini e la conquista della Morea nel 1694.

Dalla caduta della Re-pubblica di Veneziasono passati poco più
di duecento anni e dall'ele-zione del suo primo Doge,Pauluccio Anafesto, milletre-centocinque. Venezia ha vis-suto dunque da protagonistain Europa e nel mondo perundici secoli: un record a tut-t'oggi imbattuto. Molti i fat-tori all'origine di una cosìstraordinaria longevità e mol-ti i fatti che contribuirono aformare il carattere dellacittà e dei Veneziani: l'am-biente lagunare protettivoma difficile da controllare, l'ostilità di nemici di terra e dimare, la coscienza della pro-pria diversità. Tutto ciò svi-luppò nella Serenissima e neisuoi abitanti la propensioneall'impegno, alla azione, allasolidarietà, a radicare unforte senso dello Stato. A questi sentimenti si deve ilrispetto per tutto ciò che era"bene pubblico", inteso comepossesso civico e collettivo, incontrapposizione al possessoprivato. La storia di Veneziamostra, infatti, che l'orienta-mento politico del governo èsempre stato quello di perse-guire l'interesse pubblico;persino le assemblee popola-ri, quando la condotta delloStato era loro, sapevano pren-dere decisioni apparentemen-te contraddittorie a secondadelle esigenze e i partiti poli-tici si trovavano uniti quandosi era di fronte a un pericoloo a una impresa da promuo-vere. Venice was an aristo-cratic republic for 500 years,but no government or demo-cracy has ever succeeded inexerting the power the Sere-nissima wielded with suchdexterity: the control of power,its limiting and channellingtowards what was consideredto be the best for “the com-mon good”. The figure of the Doge isemblematic in this scenario. A figure evolving over the cen-turies, he resided first on thecoast, at Eraclea, then Mala-mocco, and lastly on Venice'smain island, at Rialto, fromDuke and officer of Byzan-tium, he went on to becomean independent Doge withabsolute power. Later againhis powers were to be curtai-led, reducing him to a Stateemblem, still aloof but a meresymbol of the Grand Republic.In solemnitatibus imperator, in curia senator, in urbe captivus, ex urbe reus.Electoral law changed overthe centuries. The one of 1268- which aimed above all at pre-venting ballot rigging - lasted,with a few variations, until thefall of the Republic. Uponappointment, the Doge wascalled to swear his “Promis-sione ducale”, the oath regula-ting his powers. Since the 13thcentury, responsibility forchanging it according to theneeds was in the hands theCorrettori della Promissione;in 1501, these figures wereadded to by the Inquisitors,who, after the death of theDoge, checked that he hadkept faith to his oath. Thepolitical scope of the Doge’sactivity was extremely limited.Without permission, he couldnot renounce his appointmentbut could be forced out ofoffice; he could not increasehis powers, nor own assets

THE DOGES' CLOTHES The best-known feature of the Doges' attire is the traditional small hat,which was called the "corno” (horn) for its characteristic pointed shape.It was soft in the first years - somewhat reminiscent the berets of theOrient (the Doges' robes were inspired by Byzantine tastes) - while inaround 1200 it became stiffer and conical, as one of the symbols of thecoronation. The Doge would wear a cap of gold or silver cloth, scarletfabric, damask, and crimson velvet. At his coronation, he was crownedwith the “zoia”, a "corna" encrusted with precious gems that belonged tothe State and kept by the Procuratori of St. Mark. To have an inkling of itsvalue, the zoia renewed in 1555 was estimated at 194,092 ducats. Underthe peak, the Doge would wear a smaller cap of fine cloth, called“rensa”, which was worn even during the elevation ceremony in church.The ceremonial garb was made up of the dogalina, a sort of cassock, themajestic ducal mantle, and the collar. The dogalina and the mantle weremade of fabric while the collar, fastened with a gold clasp or bejewel-led, was in fur. The stockings and shoes, which were leather or fabricboots, were red. When not seen in public, the doge wore the Romana, ashaved crimson gown while, to attend the Councils, he put on a similarone called collegiale. The Doges' costume did not undergo any greatchanges over the centuries. Two curious things are worth noting about the doges' appearance: first,their hair, which was at first worn long, then short and then long againuntil, in the 18th century, it was ‘replaced’ by powdered wigs; the other isthat they could never wear anything which was black.

In realtà si sceglievano piùvecchi per esperienza e per-ché non rimanessero molto alungo sul trono. Non doveva possedere grandie straordinarie doti intellet-tuali, bastava che non fosseun'assoluta nullità e cheavesse prestanza fisica e capa-cità nel trattare. La lista civile fu sempre esi-gua e perciò doveva esserericco per poter sostenere lacarica. Nelle grandi cerimo-nie e nelle processioni segui-vano il Doge le insegne ed idistintivi particolari della suaalta dignità. Dopo la morteun suo ritratto veniva dipin-to, a spese della Repubblica,e collocato in Palazzo Ducale. Il 4 giugno 1797, caduta laRepubblica, in mezzo al paz-zesco tripudio dei Muni-cipalisti, le insegne dogalivennero arse sopra un rogoinsieme al libro d'oro e le ce-neri sparse al vento. Ma sono cose che accadono:sic transeat gloria mundi.

Il Doge, al momento dellanomina, doveva giurare la"Promissione ducale" cheregolava i suoi poteri. A modificarla secondo lenecessità si occuparono, finodal secolo XIII, i Correttoridella Promissione; ad essivennero, nel 1501, aggiuntigli Inquisitori che verificava-no che il Doge defunto laavesse osservata. L'attivitàpolitica del Doge era limita-tissima. Non poteva rinun-ciare senza permesso al doga-do, ma poteva essere costret-to a farlo, aumentare i suoipoteri e possedere beni fuoridello Stato. Non poteva,senza l'assistenza e il permes-so dei suoi consiglieri, riceve-re personaggi in veste ufficia-le, dare risposte agli amba-sciatori, spedire o aprire let-
outside the State; he could notreceive persons in his officialcapacity, give official answersto ambassadors, send or openletters of State, or receive gifts.He also had to pay taxes. He could not leave Venicewithout permission from theGrand Council. He was notallowed to flaunt his presencein the cafés or theatres, couldonly go out when dressed likethe other patricians, not enjo-ying special honours. Despiteall these restrictions, the Dogewas free to preside over all theState’s meetings, at which hecould both make proposalsand take part in the voting.Public deeds had to bear thedoge’s signature and he hadthe responsibility of supervi-sing over the good working ofthe magistracies and justicesystems. He had to belong to afamily of the Grand Counciland, at least according to therules, he had to be youngerthan forty. In practice, though,doges were chosen from oldercitizens for their experienceand so that they would notremain in office for too long.As to their personal capacities,they were not required to haveexceptionally-gifted intellects,it being enough that they werenot completely inept, that theywere healthy and showed acertain degree of ability in theart of negotiation. After hisdeath, a portrait was paintedof him at the Republic'sexpense and put up in theDoges’ Palace. On 4 June1797, with the fall of theRepublic, in the midst of theMunicipalists’ jubilation, theducal insignias were burnt ona bonfire, together with thegolden book, and the ashesthrown to the wind. Howquickly the fame of the worldpasses: sic transeat gloriamundi.

I VESTITI DEI DOGI Il particolare più noto dell’abbigliamento dei Dogi è il tradizionale ber-retto che si chiamava “corno” per la sua caratteristica forma a punta.All’inizio era morbido e ricordava i berretti del vicino Oriente (gli abiti deiDogi erano del resto ispirati al gusto bizantino) mentre attorno al 1200diventò più rigido, di forma conica, uno dei simboli dell’incoronazione.Il Doge infatti usualmente portava un corno di tessuto d'oro o d'ar-gento, di panno scarlatto, di damasco, di velluto cremisi, mentre venivaincoronato con la “zoia”, un corno ricoperto di pietre preziose cheapparteneva allo Stato e veniva custodito dai procuratori di S. Marco.Per dare una idea del suo valore basti dire che quello rinnovato nel 1555fu stimato la somma di 194.092 ducati. Sotto il corno indossava una cuffietta di tela finissima di nome “rensa”che neppure durante l'elevazione in chiesa veniva tolta. Il vestito di ceri-monia si componeva della dogalina, specie di veste talare, del mae-stoso manto ducale e del bavero. La dogalina ed il manto erano di stoffa, mentre il collare fermato conborchia d'oro o gemmata era di pelliccia. Le calze e le scarpe, stivalet-ti di pelle o di stoffa, erano di colore rosso. Privatamente il doge indos-sava la romana, veste di raso cremisi, e per assistere ai Consigli una simi-le detta collegiale. Il costume del Doge sostanzialmente non cambiò nelcorso dei secoli. Due sono le curiosità, una riguarda i capelli che furonoprima lunghi, poi corti ed ancora lunghi fino ad essere sostituiti nel XVIIIsecolo da parrucche incipriate e l’altra il fatto che il Doge non potevamai portare il colore nero.

GENOESE DRAWINGS The exhibition presents Ligurian Drawings from the 16th and17th Centuries that are part of the permanent collection ofdrawings of the Office for Drawings and Prints (Gabinetto deiDisegni e Stampe) of the Accademia Galleries. Although theLigurian collection is rather small in size, its quality is beyonddoubt: it reaches extraordinary heights in some studies,especially those by Cambiaso and Grechetto. Their worksare flanked by Genoese artists of the 1500 and 1600s, inclu-ding Ottavio Semino, Lazzaro Tavarone, Giovan Battista Paggi,Gio Andrea Ansaldo, Bemardo Castello and DomenicoPiola.

The renowned polyptic by Carlo Crivelli, that was origi-
nally hosted in the Cathedral of Camerino and separated
in the 1800s, has been temporarily reassembled by the
Accademia Galleries. This is a unique chance to appreciate not
only the main parts of the masterpiece but also to reconstruct
the historical events and the many different stages of its conser-
vation that the three panels were subject to.
For this exceptional occasion the history of the panels and the
archives were carefully researched, a full iconographical study
was made and the paintings were scientifically appraised – using
advanced techniques – to shed new light on the pictorial exper-
tise of Carlo Crivelli.
II celebre polittico di Carlo Crivelli, originariamente nel duomo
di Camerino, danneggiato e scomposto nell'Ottocento,
viene provvisoriamente ricostruito alle Gallerie della
Accademia. Si tratta di un'occasione imperdibile per poter
apprezzare l'opera nelle sue componenti principali ma anche per
ricostruirne vicende storiche e vicissitudini conservative che,
assai diverse, hanno avuto come protagoniste le tre tavole. Per
quest'occasione straordinaria è stata condotta una accurata ricer-
ca storica e archivistica e uno studio iconografico mentre i dipin-
ti sono stati fatti oggetto di una indagine scientifica completa -
utilizzando anche tecnologie d'avanguardia - per portare nuova
luce sulla grande perizia pittorica di Carlo Crivelli.

ries and laceworks, and anumber of items of furniture,mosaic and silverware.However, the heart of theexhibition is made up of hisworks in glass, with a selec-tion of about 150 items:highly colourful murrine,enamelled and gilded glass,delicate objects in clear glassand refined incisi (engravedglass). The re-composition ofthe extraordinary decorativecycle of The Thousand andOne Nights is of particularimportance. This work, crea-ted for the Hotel Terminus inVenice in 1914, was later divi-ded up and it is beingbrought together now for thefirst time in its original lay-out. The work consists of aseries of twelve panels, cove-ring an area of about fortysquare metres, on which isrepresented, in a fairy-tale man-ner, a sumptuous procession ofmaidens, escorted by warriors,accompaniying Alladin, as headvances to ask for the hand ofPrincess Bard Al Budur, theSultan’s daughter. She acts asthe hieratic fulcrum of the com-position, which is permeated bya wholly Venetian sense ofcolour. Thegrand cycle thus constitutes aparadigm and a symbol of theclose continuity between pain-ting and glasswork.

– some created for this occa-sion – by the artist GiorgioVigna, who has also organisedthe presentation format. Glasstakes us on an imaginary jour-ney amidst wind, fire andwater. As well as the famoussculpture-vases, the fiftyworks on show - all createdbetween 1998 and 2002 -include an installation of itemsand a series of jewellery, flan-ked by the unique presenta-tion of the e-jewels project:using technical solutions byHewlett Packard, these arevirtual jewels that can bedownloaded from the Internetand “handled” freely. Theartistic search of GiorgioVigna weaves in amongstforms and materials that cancreate a vibrancy of imagina-tive strength and elements ofnature in its primary and pri-mordial facets. Geologicaladventures of land and water,and of fire and wind, constitu-te the fulcrum of a search inwhich we witness a fusion ofthe natural and the artificial,the poor and the precious -elements of common senseand purely reckless fantasies.Vigna moves along an unusualboundary between the realand imaginary world and hiscreations withhold the allureof objects that dwell in one’sdreams: at once familiar and
alien. After a full restoration ofthe ground-floor, themezzanine, and the first
piano nobile, the Galleria Inter-nazionale d’Arte Moderna is tore-open in Venice. The museumis situated in Ca’ Pesaro, themost important baroque palaz-zo in the city. It contains impor-tant 19th and 20th-century col-lections of paintings and sculp-tures, including masterpiecesby Klimt, Chagall and remar-kable works by such artists asKandinsky, Klee, Matisse andMoore, as well as a rich selec-tion of works by Italian artistsand an important section dedi-cated to the graphic arts. Tocoincide with the re-opening ofthe museum, the ground-floorcontains a homage to EmilioVedova.

creator god to repel evil andchaos. This is the view of theworld put forth by Egyptianpower. In this context theking naturally appears as theemblem of Egyptian civilisa-tion, in which the distinctionbetween nature and culture,between religion and poli-tics, becomes obscured. Thisexhibition presents overthree hundred pieces fromvarious collections worldwi-de, it will look into all themajor stages of Egyptianhistory, and the diversefacets of kingshiptouched upon willserve to illustra-te aspects ofa d m i n i s t r a -tion, religion,foreign affairs,as well as thesumptuous lifeand death of theruler of Egypt. S. MARIA FORMOSACastello, 5263ph. +39.041.2750462According to legend, the churchwas founded in 639 AD by St.Magno, Bishop of Oderzo. It is oneof the earliest of eight churchesbuilt in the lagoon during the 7thcentury. In the 12th century it wasrebuilt in the form of a Greekcross. The shape underlines theresettlement begun in 1492 byMauro Codussi, the leading archi-tect of the early VenetianRenaissance. Codussi left it unfinis-hed on his death. In the interior, astriking play of lights emphasisesthe centrality of the church and theinteresting vaults and domes.

CRIBS IN VENICE'S CHURCHES Luke and Matthew were the first to describe the nativity scene.Their texts already contained all of the miracle that, starting fromthe Middle Ages would take on the Latin name of praesepium orenclosure, manger or crib. Starting from 14th-century creation ofthe nativity scene was installed in the churches. It was only in1800s that the custom spread out into families' homes. Nativityscenes are to be found today in many of Venice's churches.
I PRESEPI NELLE CHIESE DI VENEZIA Luca e Matteo furono i primi a descrivere la Natività. Nei lorobrani c'era già tutta la sacra rappresentazione che a partire dalmedioevo prenderà il nome latino di praesepium ovvero recintochiuso, mangiatoia. Dal secolo XIV la Natività è affidata all'estrofigurativo di artisti più o meno famosi, il presepe viene installatonelle chiese ed è solo nell’800 che si diffonde a livello popo-lare. fatti con farina gialla prima della scopertadell'America e già dalla metà del 17° secoloin Friuli si faceva la polenta con il "granosaraceno", il che fa pensare che il mais siaarrivato nel Veneto attraverso i traffici vene-ziani con l'Oriente, le prime coltivazioni dimais si ebbero molto dopo. Solo allora i tra-dizionali cereali, in uso fin dai tempi deiromani, come il frumento, la segala, il farro,l'avena, l'orzo, il miglio vennero affiancati ein molti casi sostituiti dal mais americano,chiamato anche grano turco, e dalla patata.L’uso della polenta di granoturco risolsemolti dei problemi alimentari delle popola-zioni povere, fino a quando , nella metà del18th secolo, il grande consumo di questo ali-mento fu considerato la causa della pellagra.Ci vollero molti anni prima di capire che lapellagra era dovuta ad una carenza di vita-mine e che il mais avrebbe potuto continua-re ad essere la base della alimentazione pur-chè si provvedesse ad una giuta integrazione. La preparazione della polenta è da sempre lastessa: si fa cuocere la farina in acqua obrodo, vi si aggiunge burro, latte, formag-gio, carne sughi o altro e si ottengono lapolenta impastizada (pasticciata), la polentainfasolà (con i fagioli), la polenta onta(unta): tutte preparazioni attuali che sirifanno ad antica usanza.

Polenta is the heart of the Venetohome, the popular symbol of itscooking tradition. Although some
desserts were made with yellow flour inVenice before the discovery of America,and already from the mid 17th centurypolenta was made in Friuli using "buck-weat" - making one think that corn arrivedin Veneto through the Venetians' trade withthe Orient -, the earliest corn was actuallycultivated much later. Only then were thetraditional cereals that had been used sinceRoman times - such as wheat, rye, spelt(ancient cereal grain), oats, barley, millet -along with, and often replaced by,American sweetcorn and the potato. Theuse of sweetcorn to make polenta solvedmany food problems of the poor until themid 18th century, when its widespread con-sumption was blamed as the cause of pella-gra (niacin deficiency). Many years went bybefore the real culprit was singled out asbeing a lack of vitamins, and that corncould have continued to be the staple dietprovided more variety was added in.
