For its 15th anniversary, the Toronto Children’s Concert Choir and Performing Arts Company (known to many as TC3) is hoping and praying to reconnect with an old fan.

The gospel, drum and dance and Afro-Caribbean choir,

which provides positive artistic outlets and support for children from across the GTA, has per-formed for countless people, but one highlight was sharing the stage with hip hop super-star Drake at a large concert in 2006.

“Just before he got really famous, we were performing and he asked if he could come

with five dollars, but really we didn’t have anything except some borrowed space,” Gillard said. “Now, we have kids who started out with us who are graduating (college and university) and it’s amaz-ing to see.”

The reverend noted the choir started out as a response to growing violence in the black community. A small group of volunteers stepped forward to try to find a way to prevent young people from getting wrapped up in drugs, gangs and violent behaviour.

“The program was designed to meet the needs of black youth but it was never solely for any one group,” she said. “It primarily served African-Canadian kids, but we want to give every kid a safe place.”

Beyond providing musical instruction and a safe space, TC3 offers mentorship – the choir is open to children and youth aged seven to 18, so older kids will often serve as role models to younger mem-

bers – along with homework help and much more.

For 13-year-old Ben Uday, the choir has prompted a near-miraculous turn-around.

“He was diagnosed with ADHD and he was dealing with anxiety and a stutter,” said Ben’s mother, Sheryl Uday. “We needed to find a way for him to work out his energy in a positive way, because I was becoming wor-ried about his temper and his anger issues.

“This gave him a place where he feels safe and feels like he belongs. When you sing, you don’t stutter, and he’s made some friends, which has helped to tone down his aggression.”

Ben admits he was prone to bursts of anger before join-ing TC3, which is now helping him to overcome his shyness, providing support to help him in school and giving him a positive social outlet.

“In TC3, I started making a lot of friends and when I knew I had friends, other people

couldn’t make me angry,” he said. “And I feel so happy when I’m drumming, dancing and singing.”

To help ring in its 15th anniversary, TC3 is host-ing a special concert on Saturday, June 4. TC3’s 150 Voice Celebration Choir will take the stage at the Jane Mallett Theatre, 27 Front St. E., along with the Detroit Youth Choir and the Memphis Youth Performing Arts Company, and the event will be hosted by the CBC’s Dwight Drummond. The fol-lowing day, HopeWorks has organized a three-hour boat cruise with dinner and a live performance.

The organization has also launched a Kickstarter cam-paign to help fund the choir. To learn more about TC3 or to buy tickets to one of its two upcoming events, visit www.tc3.ca

With the world’s popula-tion expected to boom to as many as 11 billion people by 2050 and more and more people looking to go green and buy locally, urban farm-ing is growing in popularity in Toronto and other cities around the world.

Toronto welcomed two more urban farms in recent days, with food plants being grown in crates in order to help feed some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

A t S c a d d i n g C o u r t Community Centre, a new crate garden installed by urban gardening initiative The Bowery Project and local volunteers will see 250 square feet of food being grown.

It features 500 milk crates stacked two crates high, with plants being grown in the uppermost crate. Given that soil in cities often contains contaminants, the two-crate stacks help ensure the soil in which the food is grown is clean and free of toxins.

Rachel Kimel, who co-founded The Bowery Project (www.boweryproject.ca) with Deena DelZotto a few years ago, said the Scadding crate garden would support the surrounding community in several ways.

“The food grown here will support Alexandra Park throughout its revitalization, along with the (Scadding Court) community centre and its food programs and a local youth centre,” she said. “It’s also a good way to engage local youth. Alexandra Park youth

will do the maintenance work, and it helps connect people because when you’re out get-ting dirty in the garden, there are no language barriers.”

The garden is one of sev-eral initiated by Kimel and DelZotto since 2014.

“We have a site outside the YMCA buiding at 7 Vanauley with 1,500 milk crates where all the food gets directed into the homeless shelter,” said Kimel.

Scadding Court Community Centre executive director Kevin Lee said his organization would also provide volunteers to help maintain the new crate garden, adding that a local women’s shelter has also offered to lend a hand.

“It’s a great initiative to help animate urban spaces and create edibles here in the city,” he said. “This project fits in with our plan to help improve food security and food access in the community.”

Yorkdale Shopping Centre has also added a new urban farm, led by Frank Ferragine (also known as Frankie Flowers) to help boost sus-tainability initiatives and give back to the community.

“I got the idea when I first saw Fenway Farms at Fenway Park in Boston and thought ‘that’s pretty compelling,’” Ferragine said. “I’d been help-ing Yorkdale with their internal planting to help make it more welcoming and saw they have a lot of roof space that would be great to grow food on.”

While the initial plan was to plant Yorkdale’s Elevated Eats urban farm – which grows plants in specialized crates – atop Yorkdale’s food

court, the ability of the roof to support such a structure, the fact that Yorkdale is in a flight path and other issues led to the initiative being moved, at least for the time being, to the office building parking deck at 1 Yorkdale Road (south end of the mall).

“Right now it’s a test farm,” Ferragine said. “It’s about 1,000 square feet but the goal next year is to grow it to 5,000 square feet.”

That should be possible once the shopping centre’s renovation is complete.

Elevated Eats features more than 25 kinds of edi-bles, including herbs such as rosemary, basil and oregano, several types of lettuce, toma-toes, peppers, strawberries and more. The food grown and harvested there, or proceeds from the sale of the food, will go toward Daily Bread Food Bank.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to give back to the commu-nity,” said Yorkdale Shopping Centre general manager Claire Santamaria.

“It’s also an extension of the sustainable initiatives we have here. For instance, 60 per cent of our expansion’s roof area will be a green roof with the runoff being used as grey water in our toilets and for other non-drinking water uses.”

The urban farm will also be open to school groups who can learn more about farming at the site.

Toronto Council is being asked to approve a system to licence the city’s landlords, and we believe it’s an idea whose time has come.

At a committee meeting last week discussing the issue, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks came out strongly in favour of the proposal.

“We have a duty to make sure that no one in the City of Toronto lives in squalor,” he said. “That’s an abso-lute minimum requirement that we have to meet and if we don’t meet it, we’re failing in our responsibilities as councillors.”

We couldn’t have said it better if we’d written the motion ourselves. It is without question the responsi-bility of our elected officials to make sure we have rules and regulations in place that guarantee basic human dignity. The thought of people living in “squalor,” as Perks described it, is something that belongs in the

pages of history.Of course such conditions are

unacceptable, and our city must have the legal means to enforce laws preventing such a thing.

To that end, councillors will be voting on a bylaw at their meet-ing on June 7 that will allow the city to directly fine landlords who

are not meeting minimum standards. As it stands now, fines against landlords are levied by the province.

The new bylaw would see the city impose the fines as part of administrative fees and it would also make sure buildings are regularly inspected, rather than when complaints are made, which is how the current system works.

Councillors are also being asked to improve the inspection system for rental apartments and to set minimum standards for when the city itself will come in and do the work and bill the landlord.

Also, councillors are being asked to approve the city collecting more detailed information about landlords who constantly violate the rules and to set up a rating system.

Those are two more good ideas councillors should be acting on.

It should be noted the biggest landlord in Toronto is actually the city itself through Toronto Community Housing (TCH). And as of last week, TCH was at the top of the list of complaints at LandLordWatch.com, which advocates for tenant rights in the city,

One hopes that along with getting tough on land-lords in the private sector, these new city standards and rules will also improve the quality of publicly owned housing as well.

No one should live in squalor

Expo 2025, here in Toronto, with a major build in the

city’s port lands, the eyes of the world on us, fancy pavilions from around the world, visitors from every-where...

How’s that sound? Tough to say no.

Actually, it looks as though it will be pretty easy for Toronto to say no.

On Monday, Mayor John Tory offered as tepid a response as he could to a letter from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicating the federal government would be interested in exploring a bid.

He was even more tepid Tuesday, after a group of business and political lead-ers came to Toronto City Hall to offer up a private-sector funded business case for hosting the exposi-tion.

A study advocating a business case – that, he was

fine with. But a commit-ment to hosting the event that involved either sig-nificant city expenditure or funding from other levels of government that might cut into money that would otherwise go to the city? Not likely.

It would, in fact, have been very difficult for the mayor to say anything else this week, as his Executive Committee was grappling with a bombshell report from City Manager Peter Wallace talking about Toronto’s long-term fiscal forecast.

The report has been floating around for more than a week, and its find-ings are stark: Toronto is headed for a fiscal cliff, and soon.

Council’s two contradic-

tory imperatives – to pro-vide fulsome services and infrastructure, and to mini-mize the tax burden on property owners – means that very soon, Toronto Council will no longer be able to balance its annual budget.

How, under those cir-cumstances, do you say yes to a plan to host a world’s fair 25 years into the 21st century, of the sort that was really only a big deal in the middle of the 20th century?

It’s not to say that an old-fashioned Expo wouldn’t bring some benefit to the city and the country. It would show-case the city to interested, forward-looking visitors. And it would maintain that interest over the better part of a year.

But really, Toronto can do all of that on its own, and is doing that on its own. The port lands are

already undergoing a major redevelopment and regeneration, meticulously planned and with great private-sector interest. Those precincts don’t need pavilions – they need parkland and housing and office/industrial space.

We are already undergo-ing a massive and at-least partially funded public transit expansion. Would a successful Expo bid accelerate that? Or would it simply shift funding to other transit projects that might benefit visitors better than Torontonians?

Last year, Tory did some-thing that few other mayors have done, and said no to a potential Olympic bid.

It’s not hard to see a repeat performance when it comes to Expo.

It’s easy for mayor to say no to Expo 2025

Organizations honoured for welcoming Syrian refugees

JUSTIN SKINNER [email protected]

From coming up with spon-sorship dollars to providing valuable language, training, employment and health ser-vices, welcoming more than 1,900 Syrian refugees into Toronto in recent months has been a communal effort the likes of which the city has never before seen.

This past Wednesday, some of the many organiza-tions that have helped those refugees make the transition to their new lives were recog-nized at a special ceremony at the Berkeley Church and Field House in downtown Toronto.

The event was organized by COSTI Immigrant Services and attended by Gov. Gen. David Johnston.

Johnston, who addressed the dozens being honoured, noted that the movement to welcome and support Syrian refugees showed the best the city – and Canada as a whole – has

to offer.“I’m so struck by the

volunteer spirit here,” he said. “There are so many volunteers who have come together to help people in need.”

COSTI executive direc-tor Mario Calla said the idea of helping to settle such a large number of refugees in a short time was daunt-ing, but thanks to the orga-nizations honoured on Wednesday, the process went as smoothly as could possibly be expected.

1,900 refugees

“I had to ask myself, what will it take for COSTI to meet its obligation to settle close to 1,900 refugees in Toronto,” he said. “The answer came quickly and decisively: a community.”

He added that when a volunteer asked s o m e o f the new-

comers what they found most impressive about Canada, “the response was instantaneous: the generos-ity of Canadians.”

The organizations that w e re re c - ognized came

from

across the city and provided a number of services to help

them start their new

lives in a safe and welcom-ing country.

Fatima Filippi, execu-tive director of the Rexdale Women’s Centre, noted her organization provided assistance in a number of ways, from support services to health care to fitness to programs for women and children.

“For us, it means every-thing to be able to do this kind of work with vulnerable communities,” she said.

community welcome

“The people we provided care for were tremendous individuals who had suf-fered so greatly. They know now they’re welcomed by the community and by the country, and they were so grateful to Canada.”

WoodGreen Community Services also provided a

breadth of services to refu-gees, including housing and accommodation, essential goods, employment help and even taking them out to see the sights in Toronto.

“Some of them had never stepped outside of the hotel,” said WoodGreen director of immigrant services Maisie Lo.

“It was their first time seeing what Toronto is like, and we took them to places like the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, Allan Gardens for the spring flower show, and even to the theatre to see Arabic movies.”

While the supports have been welcomed, there are still many ways for Torontonians to help both refugees who have already settled and those who have yet to arrive.

An advocacy group claims there are nearly as many as bicycles on College Street during rush hour as there are cars.

Cycle Toronto says it found from 5 to 6 p.m. 46 per cent of road users at the intersection of College and Spadina Avenue were cyclists, compared to 54 per cent cars, according to a traffic count completed last September.

According to the group, the result is particularly impressive since just 19 per cent of the road is dedicated for cyclists in the form of bike lanes.

Toronto Council is expected to debate a 10-year cycling plan for bike lane expansion at its June monthly meeting.

wbombardier says it can meet deadlines

Just a few days after Bombardier announced a plan to deliver all of Toronto’s new streetcars on schedule comes word another prominent transit

project is postponed.Production issues

are affecting Kitchener-Waterloo’s ION light rail cars, which are under construction by the trans-portation giant, meaning the light rail project is now scheduled to open in early 2018.

Late last week, Bombardier announced it was shifting production from its Thunder Bay plant to dedicate the facility’s operations full-time to the TTC streetcars.

Bombardier is still opti-mistic it can fill the full order of 204 new streetcars, of which it has delivered 18 so far, by 2019.

wttc urged to help low income earners

The city’s most prominent transit advocacy group is looking to drum up sup-port ahead of a critical TTC

board meeting. In an attempt to ratchet

the pressure up on the board, TTCriders is circulat-ing a petition calling for more considerations for low-income transit users.

With the TTC board expected to debate forth-coming recommendations at the May 31 meeting on providing fare relief, TTCriders is making its own demands. It wants:

• fares reduced to zero for riders on social assistance;

• Metropass and token prices frozen for anyone earning under $22,000 a year;

• and discounts for social service agencies making fare purchases.

Band released statement to fans on website Tuesday

Submitted photoGord Downie (second from left) was diagnosed last December with terminal brain cancer. The Tragically Hip are planning a final Canadian tour this summer.

never be predicted with cer-tainty”, Perry said he didn’t foresee any issues with the group’s planned summer tour.

He also couldn’t predict how long the singer has left to live, as it varies from patient to patient, though he did note this type of cancer does return.

“It’s a bit of an emotional day today,” said Bernie Breen, one of Downie’s managers. “I feel the same way everyone in the country does. Shock, and now what’s next and how can we help?”

Questioning Downie’s health for a summer tour, his manager Patrick Sambrook

said the icon wouldn’t attempt this if he didn’t feel up to it.

“Gord doesn’t want to go out unless he can do his thing,” he said.

Perry said the singer will have to be mindful of fatigue and dehydration, noting “we all know he doesn’t sit down in a rocking chair and play the banjo” during perfor-mances.

Word of Downie’s diagnosis came earlier Tuesday when the band released a statement on their website.

“Hello friends,” the state-ment reads. “We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so. A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie

was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Since then, obvi-ously, he’s endured a lot of dif-ficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him.”

The statement went on to say “so after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hun-dreds of tours... we’ve decided to do another one. This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us... so, we’re going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet.”

The group’s 14th studio album, ‘Man Machine Poem’, will be released June 17.
