The writer Guido Piovene considers theMarches’ landscape as one of the mosttypical Italian countrysides, defining it as“a sheltered and civilised land, or betterstill the most classical of our regions”. Itis possible to trace back the outlyinghistorical development of the region byadmiring the various artistic worksshowing the cultural traditions over thecenturies. A combination of experience,history, influence and nature makes theMarche one of the most culturallyinteresting regions of Italy. There are 500squares, more than 1,000 importantmonuments, approximately one hundredcities of art, 37 fortresses, 106 castles, 15strongholds, 170 towers, thousands ofchurches, 200 of which are in Romanesquestyle, 96 well preserved abbeys, 1 83sanctuaries, 34 archaeological sites and72 historically important theatres, skifullyrestored, still in use.There is also the highest density ofmuseums and art galleries in Italy ( 400 outof 239 boroughs). 315 libraries, some ofgreat tradition, housing more than 4million volumes and an importantpatrimony of manuscripts and sixteenthcentury editions. Two libraries worth

noting are that of the Hermitage ofFonte Avellana (PU) and that belongingto the Leopardi Family of Recanati(MC). The many cities of art are anexample of these remarkable widespreadtreasures. As we move from the coastinland to the province of Pesaro-Urbino,we come across old towns where theatmosphere of Renaissance splendour is

recreated. Actually these places whichwere once the seats of the most importantItalian seignories: the Malatesta fromPennabilli, the Montefeltro from San Leoand the Della Rovere. Pesaro, the ancientPisaurum in Roman era first inhabited bythe Piceni, was the residence of the DellaRovere dominion up to 1631, when theentire dukedom was devolved to the Papal

States. The Ducal Palace, the CostanzaFortress, together with the treasurescontained in the museums, clearly evokethe aristocratic tone of the dominion andits court, which is perfectly embodied inUrbino’s Ducal Palace commissioned byFederico da Montefeltro. In his youth hewas educated at the Gonzaga Court ofMantova. Federico managed to change thenatural and urban aspects of a city ,marking it with the indelible sign of theDucal Palace, which opens itself with itsfairy-tale like circular turrets facing theroad that goes from Urbino to Urbania.Since 1912 the Ducal Palace has been theseat of the National Gallery of theMarches, housing masterpieces of art ofsuch artists as Raffaello, Piero dellaFrancesca, Tiziano, Paolo Uccello, etc.The Palace is ideally linked to the othermonuments commissioned by Federicowhich were planned and carried out byFrancesco di Giorgio Martini. The artistfrom Siena worked on the Ducal Palace ofUrbania (the former Casteldurantefamous for its majolica). The artist alsoworked on the original project of theBarco Ducale, Dukes’ hunting residence.But he showed his genius on the Palace

the majestic ellipsoidal tower of thestronghold remains along with the secretpassage, now housing a ContemporarySculpture Centre; Sassocorvaro theUbaldinesque fortress where there weremore than 10,000 masterpieces savedduring the last World War. Now it housesthe new museum dedicated to endangeredmasterpieces, called the “Ark of Arts”.Not far from Martini’s fortresses standsthe imposing fortress of Gradara,commissioned by the Griffo family andfurther altered by the Malatesta family andthe Sforza family, full of Renaissancefrescoes and haunted by Dante’s Paolo andFrancesca love story. You can get theimpression of Middle Ages simply bywalking around the old town, or along theTown walls crowned by square embattledtowers and turrets. The Malatesta Palace,

another clear evidence of the importanceof the Malatesta family in the Marches,who lived here until 1463, is situated inthe central Piazza XX Settembre in Fano.This city maintains many signs of itsroman origins, such as the magnificentAugustus Arch, gateway to the city fromthe famous and antique Flaminia Way.Noteworthy are also: Palazzo della Ragione,

the Malatesta Court, the Church of SanPaterniano and the Basilica Cathedral.Senigallia, in the province of Ancona,once was part of the Dukedom of Urbinoas the grand fortress due to the DellaRovere’s family witnesses. Inside a romanwatchtower can still be admired. Worth

seeing are also the Palazzetto Baviera, theConvent of Santa Maria delle Grazie andthe Palazzo Mastai Ferretti, with theMuseum dedicated to Pope Pio IX whowas born in this city. Ancona, capital city of the Marches’region, was founded by the Siracusans inthe fourth century B.C. A focal point ofcommercial, tourist and military activities,

it has grown around its port, second onlyto Venice on the Adriatic Sea. Here we canadmire one of the most magnificentRomanesque monuments of Central Italy,the Cathedral of San Ciriaco and otheroutstanding buildings such as the Loggiadei Mercanti, the Church of S. Francescoand the public art-gallery, showing thehistorical and cultural importance of thecity especially during the fifteenth andsixteenth centuries. Only a few kilometersaway from Ancona, there is Loreto, withits greatest Marian Sanctuary of Italy,visited by millions of pilgrims from allover the world. The town is linked to theHoly House of Nazareth. The legendnarrates that it was brought here by angelsto save it from the Maomettan Invasion ofPalestine in 1294. Some of the most

important artists of the fourteenth andfifteenth centuries worked in thesanctuary: Melozzo da Forlì, LucaSignorelli, Bramante, Sansovino andLorenzo Lotto. Nearby is Recanati, the“town” which lives in the shadow of oneof the most important Italian poets,Giacomo Leopardi, and which invites thevisitor to promenade the places loved bythe artist. Visit the square and themonument both dedicated to him, see thememories preserved in the MunicipalPalace (with the Beniamino GigliMuseum) and Leopardi’s section of theBenedettucci Library, see the bell tower ofthe Church of Sant’Agostino, namely thefamous Tower of the Solitary Sparrow, thesilent square of “Sabato del Villaggio”(Saturday in the village), where PalazzoLeopardi’s native home stands, adjacent tothe National Centre of Studies onLeopardi with the church of Santa Mariaof Monte Morello, where he wasbaptised and also the humble house ofSilvia, the daughter of the coach mancelebrated in a famous verse, can befound. Climbing the “Colle dell’Infinito” (the Infinite Hill) can beviewed the carved first line of the most

celebrated verse: “Sempre caro mi fuquest’ermo colle”. Worth seeing are alsoOsimo, the Roman Auximum, full of oldvestiges such as the thirteen roman statuesdating back to the imperial age, nowhoused in the Municipal Palace, theCathedral and the Sanctuary dedicated toSan Giuseppe da Copertino, visited bymany pilgrims; Offagna, dominated by its

square fortress, with its towers andimpressive dungeon; Corinaldo, boastingone of the most spectacular town walls ofthe region and an historical centre of greatenvironmental value. The town walls werebuilt in 1366 and enlarged from 1489 until1490; they still have gates defensivetowers and ramparts. It is possible toadmire its full development of more than912 meters, following the circumvolutionand walking along the old beat. Not to bemissed is the 18th century sanctuary of S.Maria Goretti and the church of theAddolorata containing the young martyr ’scrypt. Sassoferrato was originally theroman Sentinum. Traces of its past areembodied in ruins of old buildings, pavedroads and ancient walls. It has two cores,the modern “town” and perched high onthe hill, the Castle, dominated by theremains of the Fortress, built in 1368.There are many interesting sites such asthe Church of St. Francesco, MontanariPalace, Priori’s Palace and the fifteenthcentury Oliva’s Palace, housing the publiclibrary with over 10,000 volumes, ancientincunabulum, manuscripts and sixteenthcentury editions.Dominated by Jesi, the Esino valley opensthe way to the hinterland of Ancona. Jesi,Aesis for the Romans, gave birth toFederico II di Svevia and to the musicianG. Battista Pergolesi. The city has avaluable painting gallery which houses the

masterpiece by Lorenzo Lotto, the Pala diS. Lucia. Ancient walls, almost intact,sorround the city. This was the placewhere Francesco di Giorgio Martini builtthe Signoria Palace. Crossing the valleyyou can reach Fabriano, which wasalready famous in the thirteenth centuryfor the processing of paper. Fabrianorepresents a cross road for the relationshipbetween Marches and Umbria. The Piazzadel Podestà and the town historical centrestill keep their medieval look which is alsowell documented by the 13 th and 14th

From this city, whichgave birth to the finest and well knownrepresentative of the International GothicStyles Gentile da Fabriano, the town ofCamerino is easy to reach. Situated in theprovince of Macerata, Camerino enjoyed arich period of economic and artisticdevelopment under the Da Varano rule inthe fifteenth century. That time wascharacterised by the spread of the schoolof painting, which was considered by thehistorian Federico Zeri as one of the mostimportant schools of the ItalianRenaissance. Premises of one of the oldestand most renowned European Universities,housed in the Ducal Palace. The town haspreserved its medieval and defensive lookand was often mentioned in the works of

Ugo Betti, one of the finest playwriters,born in Camerino, second only to LuigiPirandello. From Camerino the next stopis Tolentino. Here stands one of the mostfamous sanctuaries in Central Italy, theBasilica of S. Nicolas, whose chapel,frescoed by Pietro da Rimini, representsthe finest example of the school of Giottoin Rimini. Other places of interest are: theVaccaj Theatre, dating back to the lateeighteenth century and the InternationalMuseum of Caricature. In the areabetween the towns of Tolentino andUrbisaglia there is one of the most

important abbeys of the Marches, thecistercian Santa Maria di Chiaravalle diFiastra built in 1142 from the stones of theancient roman city of Urbs Salvia and theCastle della Rancia. San SeverinoMarche, lies near the roman Septempeda,whose ruins can still be found in thearchaeological area. During the fourteenthand fifteenth century, owing to thedominion of the Smeducci and to theworks of the Salimbeni brothers, who alsoworked in Urbino, the city became anEuropean Centre of the InternationalGothic Style. Not to be missed is alsoMatelica, an interesting city from anartistic point of view: the sixteenth centuryoctagonal Fountain, its many churches,monumental buildings, and the artcollection of the Piersanti Museum,

housing a magnificent collection offifteenth and sixteenth century tapestriesand drawings. Macerata, in the romancentre of Helvia Rìcina, was built on a hillto avoid the incursions of the barbarians,and has many Renaissance, Baroque andseventeenth century artworks. Among itsmost representative monuments, is theSphaeristerium Arena by Ireneo Aleandri,one of th finest work of neoclassical stylearchitecture in Italy. Here every year, insummer, an important Lyrical Season isheld. The Basilica of the Madonna dellaMisericordia, Piazza della Libertà with itsLoggia dei Mercanti and Torredell’Orologio, the many museums, theimportant Modern Art Gallery of PalazzoRicci, the Library with its 350,000volumes and an old University, all togethermake Macerata a cultural reference point.Sarnano is worth visiting too. It is famousfor the red roof tiles of the houses, for itssteep and narrow alleys, which sometimesbecome steps leading up to the silentsquare, for its public painting Gallery and

for its spas and ski slopes.The historical town centre of CivitanovaAlta is another interesting place to visit:still sorrounded by the old castle wallsdating back to the fifteenth century, withtowers, bastions and two main doors, theDucal Palace of the Cesarini, AnnibalCaro’s house and the public Modern ArtGallery “M. Moretti”. Also Monte SanGiusto, where in the Church of S. Mariain Telusiano you can admire theCrucifixion, a masterpiece by LorenzoLotto, the only painting still kept in itsplace of origin. Bonafede Palace, with itsfrescoes by Aspertini, houses the“Maggiori”, a collection of old drawings.Fermo, one of the Marches most livelycentres in roman and medieval eras. Itfeatures monumental roman cisterns, themagnificent Piazza del Popolo, thesixteenth century Priori’s Palace whichnow houses in its inner rooms the publicArt Gallery which boasts importantpaintings both of Venetian and Marchesanschools, and a precious painting byRubens. Palazzo degli Studi houses alibrary with 400,000 volumes, manuscriptsand XVI century editions. There arealso a number of museums dedicated tothe environment or to archaeology. All ofthese attest the extraordinary historical andcultural heritage to be found in any cornerof this town. Moving south there isRipatransone, a lovely town with itshistorical centre and the smallest alley inItaly (only 43 cm wide), full ofarchaeological findings and monumentssuch as the Cathedral and Podestà’sPalace. A few kilometres away, Offida,preservers its walls, its fortress and theimposing Abbey of S. Maria della Rocca,one of the Marches’ most significantmonuments in Romanesque-gothic style.The chief town of the province, AscoliPiceno, with its roman monuments (theruins of the Theatre and of Augustus’

Bridge) and its fine medieval buildings(the Church of S. Francesco, the Cathedraland the Battistero marked by the whitetones of “travertino”), shows anextraordinary past. Some traces of ViaSalaria found in medieval building givealso evidence of the past. The celebratedQuintana, one of Italy’s mostextraordinary historical performances,takes place every year in the famousPiazza del Popolo. From the square thereare many delightful walks throughmedieval alleys past fine Renaissancebuildings in the style of Coladell’Amatrice, as can be seen in thefacade of the Cathedral.Other towns deserve a visit, such asAcquaviva Picena, dominated by theimposing fortress, with the ruins of thecastle’s walls, old houses and towers;Montefortino which still keeps its typicalatmosphere of the past, with its narrowalleys and its houses of stone with red rooftiles. The Art Gallery, keeps its preciouscollection of valuable paintings byFortunato Duranti. Amandola developedin 1248 because of the combination ofthree castles, at a different height on thesame hill (Leone, Marrubbione, Agello)has a beautiful historical town centre.There are: the Sanctuary of the BeatoAntonio and the Town Hall which housesthe town Archives (containing more than1,000 parchments of the eleventh century

and other medieval documents) and thenotorial Archive with valuable manuscripts.Close to Amandola there is one of the mostinteresting abbeys of the Marches, Abbeyof the Santi Ruffino and Vitale. In Faleronethe ruins of the ancient roman city ofFaleria, with its recently restored theatrecan be visited.Not to be missed: Sant’Elpidio a Mare,which is almost entirely enclosed within itsmedieval walls with Torre Gerosolimitanathe fourteenth century tower built by theKnights of Malta, the Collegiata (whichhouses paintings by Nicola Monti, Palma ilGiovane, Pomarancio, etc.) and the Town

Hall with its two precious masterpieces: offourteen a panel polyptych by CarloCrivelli and a tryptych by Garofalo.Located in a panoramic position, Arquatadel Tronto was an important “statio” in theroman era on the Via Salaria. The townowes its name to the imposing fortress(“arx”) dating back to the twelfth century,standing high on the hill, rebuilt, accordingto the tradition, by Giovanna II of Naplesand recently restored. Arquata is the onlytown in Italy belonging to two nationalsparks: Monti Sibillini and Gran Sassoand Monti della Laga.
