CONGREGATIONAL CARESSES

Paul Allen, Minister of Congregation

Several years ago a group of ladies under

the leadership of Betsy Weaver presented the idea of a new Ministry at CUMC. Their idea was that they would occasionally cook some meals and then deliver them to folks at CUMC, who could use their spirits lifted. Lifting a member’s spirits could be for many reasons: sometimes a recent illness, a hospitalization, dealing with serious and sometimes terminal illnesses, a death in the family, or any other reason to share the love of Christ to those that could benefit. Since the goal was to lift spirits by both food and fellowship, the name of “Spirit Lifters” was adopted as the official name of the Min-istry.

The meal preparation started out in

homes with all the servant minister cooks getting together on Sunday afternoons for fellowship, food preparation, and then delivery and visitation assignments. This worked well until the need and the number of cooks became too great for a home kitchen. Food preparation moved to the Fellowship Hall Kitchen, and the number of cooks increased accordingly. This also allowed the number of meals to be delivered to be enlarged as well.

This group coordinate their efforts with

the Love Pastor (me) to make sure that they don’t miss their target group. It should be noted that they share the meals and love of Christ with those not only in our church but also our community. It should also be noted that there are both men and women involved in this ministry opportunity. As a matter of fact the fresh baked bread is often times prepared by one of the men of the church.

This ministry is in many ways an oxymoron.

Everyone is pleased to get a knock on the door and welcome these folks with the delicious food. However, sometimes the benefactors really don’t want to see the “Spirit Lifters” because there is normally a serious reason as to why they are there. Needless to say, the food and fellowship truly do lift spirits.

This group currently is in need of and

would appreciate some additional members to compliment the Ministry. If this is ministry opportunity that you think you might like to be a part of, then please give Mary Linda Rye (803-429-9210) or Betsy Weaver (803-917-1745) a call. Feel free to call me in the office as well. Truly, this opportunity to participate in a ministry which gives back a reward outweighs far greater than the efforts extended. It is a validation that you can’t out-give our Heavenly Father.

“Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:16.

“BUCKET LIST” Sharon Allen, Lay Leader

Do you remember the New Year’s Resolutions you made on December 31, 2014? Probably not. But if you do, did you keep them? All during o u r l i v e s , w e a r e encouraged to make

and have resolutions, goals, plans, and even dreams. When we were young, they might have included to do my chores, to get a puppy, to save money for a bike, and to go to the beach. As we grew older, they became more involved, such as to do well in school so I can become a nurse or doctor, to go to college so I can get a great job and make a lot of money so I can have a nice car or have a nice house, to travel around the world, to have a great boat – have a big screen TV – etc. When I was growing up, my number one goal and dream was to find a great – handsome man, get married – be a good wife, have a family, and be a good Mommy. Praise God my dream came true! In 2007 Rob Reiner directed “The Bucket List” staring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. A comedy drama about two terminally ill men who set out to fulfill their bucket lists before they died. As we get older, lots of us make our own bucket lists - things we want to do or accomplish before we get too old or before we die. What would be on your Bucket List? Jumping out of an airplane at a ripe old age, like President Bush? Running a marathon? My list included the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston. Sandy Haynes and I did that three years in a row – starting when I was 63. How exciting! Mountain climbing? Going to Hawaii? Cathy Abrams wanted to eat at a Waffle House because so many of her friends had told her how good the food was. I got to go with her to her first Waffle House on a Lake Junaluska trip. How awesome! Scratch that one off. One of the top things on my personal list is to travel. Paul and I have been blessed to have been able to take some great trips in this country and abroad, but we still have a trip to Australia and New Zealand, along with seeing more of the USA on both our lists.

Whatever your resolutions, goals, plans, and dreams were/are, did they ever/do they include God? Does your bucket list mention God? I must shamefully admit that my bucket list does not include doing anything for God. He is a part of my everyday living – I know Him personally and experience Him daily, so I didn’t add Him to my list. But, I should have! All my resolutions, goals, plans, dreams, and my bucket list should start and end with God! Have you ever read the Bible from cover to cover? Well, that should be on your bucket list. Have you ever been on a Mission Trip – local or over seas? Put that on your list. Do you know any Scripture by heart? Put that on your list. Do you tithe? Put that on your list. Do you pray for others daily? Put that on your list. Do you encourage others daily? Put that on your list. Do you put God first, others second, and yourself last? Put that on your list. Do you get the idea? There is so much that we need to do for God and His people – we never know how much time we have, so make that list a n d g e t b u s y s c r a t c h i n g o f f w h a t y o u a r e allowed to accomplish. Others will be blessed; you will be blessed and God will smile! I have revised my bucket list and it is now a “God-Filled” Bucket List. Looking forward to working along with you to accomplish big things with God by being the hands, feet, and mouth of Jesus to the world around us. Your Lay Leader, Sharon

Wow! Time is flying by! If you haven’t purchased school supplies for your 2015 OCC Shoeboxes –

don’t delay – shop while the prices are low! Remember every OCC Shoebox needs pencils, pencil sharpeners, colored pencils, colored markers, crayons (for the younger children), notebook paper/pads, glue sticks, etc. It is not too early to decide on what else you want to include in your boxes - each shoebox needs one special item (doll/soccer ball & pump/watch/shoes/clothes, etc.) along with other smaller items (sunglasses/flash light & batteries/yoyo/ball/cars/trucks/paper dolls/ jump ropes/jacks, etc.). Please add one more box to the number you did last year – because each filled box represents a child that receives not only a few simple gifts but also the Greatest Gift of all—the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be a Missionary and pack those shoeboxes with prayers and “goodies.” We are thanking God in advance for all the filled shoeboxes that CUMC will provide in November for shipment around the world to touch the lives of many children! You are awesome, Lay Servant Ministers! Thank You!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD By Sharon Allen

LIKE A BOSS “It's my life. I should be free to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want . . . as long as I'm not hurting anybody.” This is what we tell ourselves. But what if it's not true? What if our desire to do what is right in our own eyes has major consequences for us, for the people with us, for the people who love us, and for the people coming after us?

HOW TO BE BRAVE Are you ever afraid someone will ask you why you believe what you believe? Do you fear someone might question what you believe? Responding to people's questions and challenges can get complicated. But what if you were confident you had the answer to the most important question about your faith?
