MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 25– MAY 1, 2016

POPE FRANCIS “The evils of our world—and those of the Church—

must not be excuses for diminishing

our commitment and our fervor. Let us look upon them as challenges

which can help us to grow. With the eyes of faith, we can see the light

which the Holy Spirit always radiates

in the midst of darkness, never forgetting that ‘where sin increased,

grace has abounded all the more’ (Rom 5:20).”

Continue to Pray for Christian Martyrs “Open Doors” is a watchdog group that advocates for Christians throughout the world. According to “Open Doors” in a report for the 2015 year, Christian violence in the world has heightened to new high levels in the modern day world. “Open Doors” re-ports this new violence as “… a level akin to an eth-nic cleansing.” “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now, you are the Body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26-27) What comes to mind when you hear the word per-secution? If you are like us, your mind will instantly bring up the images disseminated by the new me-dia of the 21 Coptic Christians kneeling on the beach with the name of Jesus Christ on their lips as they courageously faced death at the hands of the Islam-ic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). Today, an esti-mated 5.5 billion people (77 percent of the world population) of all faiths including Christian, Muslim, Jew Hindu, Buddhist, and others face some form of religious persecution. Such persecutions take the form of economic discrimination, imprisonment, physical violence, and death. Listed below will be cited 10 countries where the Body of Christ is experiencing persecution and suf-fering. The 10 countries that follow do not comprise all of the countries where Christians are suffering from persecutions. Individuals in these 10 countries, specifically in their families and in their churches, are keeping the Christian witness alive and vibrant even though the threats to their well-being are put before these witnesses of the faith on a daily basis. In Iraq, the land of Eden and the garden, Jonah and Daniel, Christians have shrunk from 1.5 million to just over 300,000. Many Christians have been massacred and because of impending death threats have migrated seeking greater safety for their faith, witness, and their very lives. A tearful Assyrian Christian activist told a packed audience at the Na-tional Press Club in Washington, DC. ISIS has sys-tematically targeted religious minorities for murder and abduction and has auctioned off girls and

women kidnapped from religious minority groups. It prices the youngest from ages one to nine at 200,000 dinars which is equal to 170 U.S. dollars. The United States Commission on International Reli-gious Freedom (USCIRF) warns that the ongoing violence could “… well mark the end of … its ancient Yazidi and Christian communities.” Syria, with the fear stemming from negative reper-cussions from the Sunni refugees identifying them as Christians, worry daily they will be exposed as Chris-tians and then become subject to persecution. The Syrian Christian population has been decimated. According to The New York Times, in 2013, almost 25 percent (450,000) of Syria’s Christians have fled. The number of Syrian refugees then was 1,877,020. Today, it has more than doubled to 4,086,760. If displacement rates are correct displacement has re-mained the same and more than 50 percent of the country’s Christian population may have become refugees. Consequently, because of the fear of the Muslim refugees escaping the conflict, most Chris-tians will not identify themselves and access the 4 billion dollars of U.S. aid which was distributed through the U.N. Continued next week.

Deacons’ Corner …Regret is now the number 1

distraction word in our vocabulary…

Yup, all the analysis is completed, results have been tabulated and votes have been counted, as the word REGRET is now the official most overused word in the English Language. I regret to inform you of this fact, but it now takes its’ place as the worst overused word we have.

Boy, oh boy, do we give that word a world class workout. It seems that. Now it’s not that regret is a bad word, for regret is part of the illumination our conscience provides for decisions made or action tak-en (or not taken) that had a wrong consequence. You know, things like regretting something you said, regretting something you did (or didn’t do), regret-ting your not thinking something through, even re-gretting a decision that made things worse. And probably tons more, too.

When it gets goofy, and you feel overwhelmed, re-member, God didn’t invent regrets to lay guilt trips on us, but to improve us in His image. According to the experts, REGRET actually began with some sort of fruit on a tree, which had apparently huuuuge im-pacts on those two decision makers who launched that popular phrase….”learning the hard way”. Think about it, God never intended us to dwell in “the what if’s”, He intended us to dwell in the what is’s! We could spend an entire lifetime on the woulda, shoulda, coulda’s, and miss all the best parts of what God has given us in this life, or we can bask in the grace of all best parts of what God has given us in this life. Yesterday’s a cancelled check, tomorrow’s a promissory note, today is now…invest wisely.

Live today, really live today, with no regrets.

“LOTTO FOR LEGACY “

How did “Lotto for Legacy” come about you ask? Thanks to a long time parishioner who had a vision of a simple lottery ticket becoming our pot of gold for Legacy; we have intro-duced “Lotto for Legacy”. Our parishioner has offered to scratch off all the lottery tickets that are received. All you have to do is purchase a lottery ticket for Legacy and drop it in the collection basket. The fourth weekend of each month will be our “Lotto for Legacy” weekend. Our first “Lotto for Legacy” is this week-end April 23-24. If you forgot your lottery ticket this week-end you can drop it in the collection basket any weekend or bring it to the Parish Office during business hours. All proceeds will benefit the Legacy Campaign for comple-tion of the second floor.

We’ll keep you posted on the winnings!
