THE ARCHÆOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

he earliest known record of the church of Killora is from the year 1333, when the Annals of the Four Masters records that “Florent Mac Anoglaigh, Archdeacon of Killoran, died.”

(Connellan 1846, 118). However, a later edition of the annals appears to disagree with this assertion, and instead believes that the church referred to is Killery in the Barony of Tirerrill, county Sligo (O’Donovan (et al.) 1856, 1990, 550 - 1). The next known reference to the church comes in 1586, the twenty-eight year of the reign of Elizabeth I, when the church was listed in ‘Valor

Beneficor Ecclesiasticorum’ as being taxed for the sum of £1 6s 8d (Fahy 1893, 239 - 40). On the 26th of August 1588 Kiloran is mentioned in a Fiant as part of a parcel of land leased to Bryan Fitzwilliams (Fiants, 69), while on the 26th of April 1593 this land was among others leased to John Lye (op. cit., 218). The church of ‘Kiloragh’ is mentioned in an inquisition carried out under Lynch, in the reign of Charles I (1625 - 1649) and recognised as one of the vicarages of the Diocese of Kilmacduagh which were sold to Robert Blake for £5 (op. cit., 258). As part of the church lands of Kilmacduagh it was again sold in 1661 for a period of twenty-one years, this time to John Eyre at an inquisition at Portumna (op. cit.). The Ordnance Survey Name Book notes that: “There is the ruins of an old Church and burying ground in this Td. from which it takes its name called Killora. The oldest stone cut therein is dated 1678. The graveyard and old ruins stand s. w. of the village of Killora.” (OSNB 1839, 28). It also notes that the name of the townland has been variously recorded as ‘Killore’, ‘Killohra’, and ‘Killoran’; the latter from the Down Survey of 1655 (op. cit.). It is given as ‘Killoran’ in both Speed’s map of 1610, and in Mercator’s Atlas of 1636.

he Ordnance Survey Name Book gives the meaning of the name as coming from the Irish ‘Cill Eóra’, the church of St. Eora (op. cit., 27). The Ordnance Survey Letters, however, gives the

name as: ‘Cill Óthra’, the church of prayers (OSL 1839, 183/442). Kelly also records these possible appellations, and adds that the name may also have come from “Cill Odhra, the light brown or dun church, or Cill Fheora, named after a nun, Feoir, or Feora, who founded it.” (Kelly 1975, 25). On the foundation of the church, he notes that: “The late Michael Glynn of Killeeneen, told me that the churches of Killora, Killeeneen and Killeely were founded by three sisters, Ora, Eney, and Eely, and that the sisters built the churches close enough to enable Ora to see Killeeneen, and to enable Eeny to see Killeely in the distance.” (op. cit., 26).

he site has an area of 0.4 acres, and is located on a low rise in pasture land with good views over the surrounding area, especially to the south where the land is unwooded (Figs. 1 & 2).

The site is today enclosed in an irregular fashion by a drystone boundary wall constructed of rough limestone blocks, c. 55m east-west, by c. 35m north-south (maximum dimensions), which appears

T

to date to the 19th and 20th centuries. This wall appears to bear no relationship to any earlier feature, except for an area c. 10m long, external to the south wall which may possibly represent the remains of a bank and ditch defence of an early Christian site. To the north and west of the church is an area of 6.801 acres, divided into a number of small fields, noted on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey six-inch sheet as a gleebe. Although today heavily overgrown, this area possibly represents the remains of a settlement site, complete with souterrain, that may have flourished from the 12th century onwards. This theory is given some support by the discovery of a portion of iron slag, weighing 0.75kg, in an area of overgrowth near the north-east of the site. Also, a number of fragments of Oyster shell were discovered in the roots of a fallen tree in the area where the OS map sheet marks the souterrain. The 1st edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map-sheet of 1839 marks a ruined building in the northern part of this gleebe, but is absent from subsequent editions of the sheet. On inspection, the building appears to have long been removed and the area used as a dump for field clearance.

rom a detailed study of the church of Killora, it appears the building may be of a two to four period construction. The oldest standing portion of the church seems to be the lower five or six

courses of the battered east wall (1.42m) which date to the late 12th to early 13th centuries (Fig. 3). The external face of this wall measures 6.04m wide (externally) and bears at least one stone, in situ, with rough, diagonal adze tooling of this period. The inner face of this wall bears a small aumbry (0.45m x 0.45m x 0.4m) near its’ southern corner, the four stones of which all bear fine diagonal tooling of late 12th to early 13th century type, and appears to be an original feature of the church. Another feature of this wall, possibly also an original feature, is the projecting stone at the lower, southern corner of the east window. It bears light, fine diagonal tooling similar to that mentioned above, and may have been one of a pair, originally supporting the rear of a wooden altar, similar to Tinree church in Connemara. The corresponding stone is, however, missing as the entire lower portion of the wall, from beneath the window to the northern corner of the wall, has been partially robbed out. It appears that this action was taken to accommodate an 18th or 19th century burial vault with a rounded top. This feature has since been removed, leaving no trace, but the depletion of the wall.

uring the late 15th to early 16th centuries, it appears that the church was substantially remodelled and extended to the west. This involved the demolition and rebuilding of the

majority of the east gable. Today, the gable stands to its full height of c. 9.5m, and measures 0.9m in thickness at the east window. Approximately 1.0m from the apex, the gable displays a recessed shelf which would have borne a heavy rafter. The external face of this rebuilt section includes at least seven reused stones of late 12th to early 13th century date, all bearing very fine, diagonal tooling. Among these is one finely carved, moulded fragment, set on edge, below and to the north of the window, almost certainly originating from a window. A similar example is to be found at Roscam, Co. Galway. Large portions of the wall retain traces of harling, possibly disguising further worked stones of a similarly early date.

8

t this time the quoins were replaced with worked stone of the period, though one fragment in the north corner of the wall is a reused stone of late 12th to early 13th century date, bearing

fine, diagonal tooling. The external face of the wall bears ‘put-log’ holes, one each at the upper corners of the wall, near where the gable forms. A further two are located at the level of the base of the window, one near its’ south corner, the other close to the northern edge of the wall. Others presumably existed, but were likely to have been filled with stone once the late 15th to early 16th century phase of rebuilding was complete. The depletion of the internal face of the east wall, caused by the insertion of the vault, allows the inspection of the internal fabric of the wall, which includes a reused fragment of bowtell moulding of 13th century date, possibly from a window or doorway. Lying near this are two worked fragments of similar date, embedded in the present ground surface of the church.

uring the late 15th to early 16th century phase of building the unusually squat, east window was inserted (Figs. 4 & 5). It is a two-light, ogee headed window with a chamfered edge and

a squared hood-moulding. The external face of the spandrel bears fine, floral carving, with a rosette in its northern corner. The design of the spandrel is almost identical to one on the grounds of University College, Galway, and may be dated to the period from 1450 to 1550. The slightly irregularly angled embrasure is corbelled in at its top, and capped with a roughly tooled lintel, which may possibly be a reused gravestone, above which is a low relieving arch. The window mullion and sill bear small holes for the accommodation of bars, but are without glazing grooves, implying that a wooden shutter was used internally. The internal corners of the window bear the heavily corroded remains of the spikes used to hold such shutters in place. The corrosion of the remains has caused the cracking of parts of the stones. Either side of the embrasure bears a hole to accommodate a draw-bar which would have secured the shutters.

he northern corner of the window embrasure includes a reused stone, set on its side, bearing a moulded edge. A second, partially broken, moulded fragment is reused in the north face of the

embrasure. Both are apparently identical in form to the moulded fragment reused in the external face of this wall. All three may be dated to the late 12th to early 13th century on the basis of their fine, diagonal tooling, and all may well have originated from the same window.

he south wall measures 21.58m in length (externally), 0.8m in thickness at the door, and bears some large, reused, worked blocks of uncertain date in its external face. At a point 6.79m from

the south-east corner of the church there is an offset in the wall, measuring 0.26m, the external corner of which bears worked quoin stones. This portion measures 3.74m in height, while its’ western reach is, on average, c. 0.50m lower than this, and bears a slight batter at its base. The furthest western reach of this wall (4.20m) appears to have become unstable, possibly being built over earlier graves. In an effort to support this section, it appears that a buttress was at some time

A

T

9

constructed, measuring 1.45m wide, by 2.1m long, and 1.9m high. The buttress itself appears to have become unstable, and now leans noticeably to the east. The Ordnance Survey Letters mention the deteriorated state of the wall: “14 feet of the south sidewall between the door and the west gable stand, much battered and in a tottering state. This part is propped on outside with stone work, cemented with lime and sand mortar” (OSL 1839, 183/442). The south wall also displays two narrow, single light windows. The first measures 1.16m high, by 0.22m wide, and is located 2.14m from the east end of the wall. It bears a rounded head with a chamfered edge. From its design and from the irregularly angled embrasure, coupled with the corbelled form of the capping, it may be dated to the period of rebuilding during the late 15th to early 16th centuries. The second window measures 0.98m high, by 0.21m wide, and is located a further 5.97m to the west of the previous example. This example bears a flat head, with a wide splaying embrasure and a rear-arch of a rubble construction. This too appears to date to the late 15th to early 16th centuries. 7.39m to the west is the main doorway (Figs. 6 & 7). It measures 0.96m wide, by 1.90m high, and bears a slightly ogee shaped head with a chamfered edge, placing it too in the period from the late 15th to early 16th centuries. It is, however, incomplete as two of the cut stones from the lower edge of its west jamb have been robbed out, and were missing previous to 1838 (op. cit. 183/443). The inner, western, corner of the doorway bears a ‘hanging-eye’ of unusually small size, relative to the original door (Fig. 8). The upper portion of the doorway bears a rubble built arch, displaying prominent ‘nib-holes’, with the remains of wickerwork centring along its lower face. On either side of the inner face of the doorway are holes to accommodate a draw-bar to secure the door, the eastern hole being worn smooth from many centuries of use.

he inner, eastern, corner of the wall at the doorway bears a double-oped holy water stoup, the vertical, corner portion, and much of the lower portion being broken. It measures 0.39m, by

0.32m, by 0.22m high (internally). As a type, these are generally confined to the area of east Galway and County Clare, and date to the late 15th to early 16th centuries. The example at Killora bears most resemblance to one at the Franciscan Friary at Kilbocht.

rom the dating of all of the above features it would appear certain that the date of construction for the entire wall was contemporary with the remodelling of the east gable, and thus of late

15th to early 16th century date. This assessment is, however, problematic as this wall and the southern corner of the east gable are not bonded in to each other, and have slipped apart by as much as 0.05m at their inner angle, and to a measured depth of 0.41m into the fabric. There does not appear to be any bonding in the south wall at the corners of the off-set, thus making this feature difficult to adequately explain without the aid of excavation. It is, however, possible that it represents a slightly later phase of rebuilding of the structure.

he north wall measures 19.31m long (internally), by 0.8m thick (average). The majority of it stood to its original height until 1988 when the upper five or six courses (c. 1.7m) were

demolished (ASG: Killora 2), the rubble of which lies where it fell in the adjoining field to the north. The surviving remains stand to an average height of 1.3m to 2.1m, except at its north-eastern corner

where a portion, 0.85m wide (maximum) survives to its original height of 3.48m. O’Connor and Larcom note that previous to their visitation of the site in 1839 that the western reach of this wall: “22 feet in length were pulled down” (OSL 183/442), and was apparently roughly rebuilt. 5.42m from its north-eastern corner, the wall bears an offset, 0.45m wide, similar to the example on the south wall. Unlike the south wall, however, this offset does not bear a corresponding one on its external face, as this portion of the wall has been robbed out. The north-eastern corner of this wall bears a projecting stone at 2.76m above the present ground surface, and may have been an attempt to hold the east gable from slipping, as has happened at the south-east corner of the church. This assessment, however, may be incorrect as the remains of the north wall appear to be sufficiently keyed-in to each other. Near this corner the surviving section of the wall bears a reused stone of late 12th to early 13th century date, displaying rough, diagonal tooling formed by an adze. It is difficult both to date the construction of the wall, as much of it has been demolished; and to explain the presence of the offset in the wall. However, in general terms, it may be suggested that it belongs to the period of construction from the late 15th to the early 16th centuries, and may also be of a possible two-period construction.

he west wall measures 6.52m (externally) and stands to its full height of c. 7.5m (Fig. 9). The lower portion of its external face displays at least three reused blocks of masonry of late 15th

to early 16th century date, along with one of possible late 12th to early 13th century date. A quoin with deep, regular pecking at the south-west corner of this wall dates to the period from the late 16th to early 17th centuries, and would appear to date the construction of this wall. However, as the western reaches of the north wall was destroyed and rebuilt; while the western end of the south wall is both unstable and partially obscured by the buttress, it is impossible to determine whether this possible late 16th to late 17th century phase of building included the further extension of the church to the west, or merely a rebuilding of the gable. However, the little of the surviving south-west corner that is currently visible seems to be well bonded together.

igh on the gable there is a narrow, single-light window with a pointed head. It measures 0.45m wide, by 0.85m high, with its sill at a height of 5.20m above the external ground surface. Due

to the extensive ivy growth covering this feature, and its relatively inaccessible nature, it is impossible to determine whether any of its stones are worked, or to what period it may date. The external face of this wall bears a put-log hole high on its southern edge, similar to the east gable; others undoubtedly existed, but were blocked up once construction was complete. Of interest is the fact that the internal face of this gable does not bear a recessed shelf feature as displayed by the east gable. This appears to further reinforce the suggestion that this wall is of a different period to the rest of the structure.

t is difficult to discern when exactly the church fell out of use. From the general dates of the oldest gravestones within the building which appear to be in situ, this date may be placed around the

mid-17th century. During the following centuries the majority of the extant gravestones were erected

within the graveyard, and many worked stones taken from the church were reused as uninscribed grave markers. One, in the east of the graveyard, near the north boundary wall is a window mullion of late 12th to 13th century date; while another, lying near the south-eastern corner of the graveyard, near the modern entrance way, is a tooled quoin stone similar to that in the south-western corner of the church wall, and dates to the late 16th to early 17th centuries (Fig. 10). In the south-western corner of the graveyard there lies a late 16th to early 17th century jamb stone from a window or a doorway. A further stone, lying near the south-east corner of the church appears to be part of the coping of the gable. Works Cited: (ASG) Archaeological Survey of Co. Galway, Unpublished Files. Coy/Foord

James Coys Stone 1779 Erected by John Foord in memory

of his Father o Lord have mercy on hin

In north of church, by north wall, a recumbent limestone slab with a gabled head and tapering in length. In situ, facing east. 1.84m long x 0.55m at top, tapering to 0.45m at bottom. Incised, worn but legible text. The upper portion of the stone bears an incised ‘IHS’ monogram with cross with expanded terminals springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. The inscription appears to be of two periods, the first being the inscription of the first two lines, the second portion being of a slightly different style. It appears that the first part of the inscription was associated with an incised version of a plough-sock and coulter. These symbols obviously predate the cutting of the lower portion of the inscription on the stone as the ‘r’ of the word “mercy” in the eight line of the text is superscribed to avoid one of their angles. The bottom of the stone appears to be partially broken. The use of the plough-sock and coulter as occupational symbols is common west of the Shannon, and there are similar examples at Claregalway Abbey, and Loughrea (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See also No. 85. The word ‘hin’ in the last line of text appears to be a mason’s error. See Figs. 12 & 13.

17(8/9?)3 By south wall, inside the church, a recumbent limestone slab. In situ, facing east. 1.90m long x 0.68m wide. Incised, partly legible text. The top of the stone bears a small incised IHS monogram, with a plain Latin cross potent, with expanded terminals extending from the cross-bar of the H. Many of the letters are incised with a double line to give them prominence. Just below the inscription is a very worn, inscribed panel which appears to bear a false relief ‘IHS’ monogram.

Anon. In centre of church, a recumbent limestone slab. In situ, facing east. 1.78m long, tapering from 0.54m at top, to 0.45m at base. The slab is decorated with an incised ringed cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The external edge of the ring breaks at where the head and arms should be, but are uncut, similar to an example from Killimer (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). To the left of the shaft is an incised hammer, while to the right there is an incised tongs and horse-shoe. The areas within the horse-shoe and between the mouth and handles of the tongs are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. Below the stepped base is a further carving of a tongs/pincers and a hammer. All of these would appear to be the vocational symbols of a blacksmith. The edge of the stone bears a double lined, incised border. It is believed that this stone may be of a blacksmith who lived in the Townland of Carrigeen (pers. comm. Mr. C. Potter, Craughwell). Similar examples of this form of stone, which are dated, span the period from 1630 to 1680 (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See Figs. 14 - 16.

In centre of church, a tapering, recumbent limestone slab. In situ, facing east. 1.86m long x 0.63m wide at top, tapering to 0.50m at bottom. Incised, clear text. The stone bears a large, incised, ringed, cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The external edge of the ring breaks at where the head and arms should be, but are uncut. The stone bears a border of two parallel, incised lines. The words of the inscription are spaced by relatively large, incised dots. The text appears to be inexpertly carved, as the letters vary in size, and in many cases are incorrectly shaped. As a type, this stone dates to the period from the late 16th to the early 17th century with similar examples from Kilcolgan, though this example may date as late as the 1660s (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See Fig. 17.

In church, by north wall, a recumbent limestone slab. In situ, facing east. 2.18m long x 0.70m wide. False relief, clear text. The lower portion of the stone bears an inverted, incised, ringed, cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The stone bears a border of two parallel, incised lines. The words of the inscription are spaced by false relief lozenge shapes. The first and second lines of the text are separated by a narrow horizontal panel from which the first line of text springs, and is slightly encroached upon by the height of the ‘O’ in the word ‘OF’ in the second line. The second and third lines of text have no such dividing panel, and thus some of the letters touch each other, most notably the letters ‘M’ and ‘H’ in the third line abutting the letters above them. Some of the letters of the text are ligatured, namely: in the first line of the text the letters “HE”; in the third line of the text the letters “NE”. As a type, this stone dates to the period from the late 16th to the early 17th century with similar examples from Kilcolgan (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See Fig. 18.

IHS 1619

Lying loose in church, a broken, recumbent limestone slab. 0.91m long x 0.58m wide. The whole of the upper portion of the stone is carved with a relatively loose, false relief latticework based on the intersection of lozenge, saltire cross, and Greek cross shapes. The four sides of the panel where these features intersect are marked by semi-circles, with a central circle. Each of the corners also bear a quadrant circle. A small false relief cross with expanded terminals springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’ of the ‘IHS’ monogram. The upper left corner is broken, removing the majority of the quadrant-circle from this portion. Some aspects of the carving give the impression that the stone was left unfinished. These include a number of the triangular sections between the intersections of the circular portions and the straight bands are left uncarved, the outlines of some being only lightly incised. Further, the ‘6’ in the upper version of the date ‘1619’ is also unfinished. However, it is likely that this was originally painted, thus the outlines of the design were all that was necessary. Lying nearby is what appears to have been the lower portion of this stone. It is uninscribed and undecorated, and measures 1.14m long (max.) x 0.58m wide, giving a stone that would have originally measured c. 1.83m long. The closest parallells to this stone are to be found at St. Nicholas Collegiate church, and at Kilcorban (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See Fig. 19.

In the east of church, a recumbent limestone slab. In situ, facing east. 2.03m long x 0.82m wide. Incised, partly illegible text. The upper portion of the stone bears a very low, false relief ‘IHS’ monogram with a cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. A false relief ‘INRI’ monogram is divided on either side of the shaft of the cross. The upper left and right corners each bear an incised heart with the ‘point’ facing into the corner.

By the north wall, in the east end of the church, a limestone headstone with a gabled top. In situ, facing east. 1.06m high x 0.89m wide. Incised, clear text with recently repainted black lettering. The upper portion of the stone bears a high relief ‘Agnus Dei’ lying on a fallen cross. The back of the stone bears a rough cross with pointed terminals. The lower portion of the stone is illegible as it has been recently reset in concrete. The face and sides of the stone have recently been sanded, resulting in a degeneration in the quality of the preserved text.

In south-east corner of church, a recumbent limestone slab with a slightly rounded head. In situ, facing west. 2.09m long x 0.13m wide. Incised, worn but legible text. The upper portion of the stone bears an elaborate false relief ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals, fitched. The ‘INRI’ monogram, in low false relief, is divided on either side of the arms of the cross. A panel to the right of this bears a low false relief panel depicting a chalice. To the right of this again is a smaller panel bearing an object of questionable function, possibly a seal, a water/wine cruet, a holy water dispenser, or a stamp for impressing wafers. To the left of the ‘IHS’ monogram is a panel of similar size to the one displaying the chalice, which appears to depict either a book, or perhaps a portable altar stone. Beneath the stone are six recumbent blocks of dressed stone, each with a deeply incised panel with a rounded head, possibly indicating that

22

this is a fallen table tomb. In some aspects of the design, this stone bears similarities with one at Killursa (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). Fahy’s ‘History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Kilmacduagh’ (p. 421-2) notes: “[...] the Rev. Terence Hynes was parish priest of Craughwell in 1798. He was succeeded by the Rev. James Duffy, transferred from Kilchrist. Father Duffy was a man endowed with many of the priestly qualities of his brother, the pastor of Gort. He was always uncompromising in the discharge of duty. Yet he was esteemed not merely by his faithful people, but by men of every rank and persuasion with whom he came in contact. The regard in which he was held by his clerical brethren may be inferred from the office of Vicar-Capitular, which he held after Dr. Nihil’s death. [¶]An effort at proselytism inaugurated there in his time must have caused him some anxiety. But he had the consolation of seeing its total failure. The insane and criminal action of the secret agrarian movement of the period was also a source of great uneasiness to him. [...] Father Duffy’s death occurred in 1833. He was succeeded by the Rev. Timothy Geoghegan, a native of the parish of Beagh [...]” See also pp. 390 - 4, 433 (op. cit.) for the Rev. Michael Duffy.

who died Decr. 4th 1865 in the 52nd year of his age May his Soul rest in peace

In south of graveyard, by south wall of church, a recumbent limestone slab with slightly rounded head. Moved, facing east. 2.02m long x 0.98m wide. Incised, worn but legible text. The upper portion of the stone bears a large, false relief panel with a moulded internal edge. External to this is a broad border in a stylised foliage motif, carved in low false relief. The centre of the panel bears a large, false relief roundel with a moulded edge. Within this is a large ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with an expanded terminal at the head, and arms patonce, fitched, springing from the lozenge shaped cross-bar of the ‘H’. The upper left and right corners each bear a winged cherub head. Below each of these is a draped ciborium. The base of the stone bears an incised roundel with a moulded border. Within this are the false relief carvings of a crossed hammer and pincers, the occupational marks of a blacksmith, and is similar to a stone at Kilmoylan graveyard, near Tuam (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). This stone was originally situated where 43 is now located. See Fig. 20.

Incised, clear text. The upper portion of the stone bears a false relief ‘IHS’ with a Latin cross, fitched, springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. Below the inscription there is a small, circular depression in the stone, which may be the mason’s attempt to remove a loose flaw from the stone. The substitution of ‘in’ for ‘nd’ in the fifth line of the text appears to be a mason’s error.

In south of graveyard, by south wall of church, a recumbent limestone slab with rounded upper corners. In situ, facing east. 1.82m long x 0.73m wide. The upper portion of the stone bears an incised panel with a gabled head. Within this is carved a low false relief ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. The ‘S’ is interesting as it is carved backwards. Below the cross-bar is a false relief heart. To both the left and right of this is possibly a foliage motif, but is too worn to be easily recognisable. The lower left hand corner of the stone is broken.

A band of false relief foliage runs along all the external edges; dividing the upper, decorated, panel from the text below. Inside this border, the upper portion of the stone bears a semi-circular band of false relief, bearing the incised text: “GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO”, the final ‘O’ being somewhat contracted to fit into the panel. Inside this again, is an almost complete circle of radiating triangles forming a sun motif. This in turn surrounds a false relief ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the lozenge shaped cross-bar of the ‘H’. Beneath the cross-bar, and slightly off centre to the right is a six-petalled flower in false relief. To both the lower left and right of the monogram are two Ali shapes. The left most example has a clearly defined ‘crown’ which indicates that he is most likely a peacock.

The upper portion of the stone bears a small ‘IHS’ monogram in false relief with a large Latin cross with expanded terminals springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. Both the cross and the monogram are almost completely encompassed by an uninscribed/illegible false relief band. The upper edge of the stone bears a false relief border in a foliage design. The second letter in the first line of text appears to be a mason’s error as it is carved as a small capital ‘I’ as opposed to an ‘A’. The lower portion of the letter ‘S’ in the same line also appears to be incorrectly carved.

Incised, clear text with evidence of layout lines. The cross bears the crucified figure of Christ in high relief. On the back of the stone many fossils are apparent, indicating a lesser quality material. This is further substantiated by the slight flaking of the main inscribed face of the stone. In recent times the stone has been sanded, causing a degeneration of portions of the text.

The upper portion of the stone is decorated in false relief, and bears a large ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals on arms, a head moline, fitched, springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. To both the left and right there is a large, stylised foliage motif. The upper corners of the stone bear a quadrant-circle with radiating lines carved from their centres. Thename ‘Greay’ in the seventh line of text is presumably a mason’s error. The upper edge of the stone bear the incised words: “Ecce Signum Salutus”. It appears that this may well have originally been a table tomb as two tooled ashlar supports with bevelled edges now rest on the face of the stone, while a third lies near the base, and a fourth lies behind No. 77.

PATRICK SILKE In south of graveyard, a limestone headstone with curved and stepped shoulders and surmounted by a ringed cross. In situ, facing east. 1.78m high x 0.72m wide. The centre of the cross bears a false relief ‘sacred heart’, horizontally traversed by two intertwining bands of thorns, and surmounted by a small, plain Latin cross, also in false relief. The arms, head, and shaft of the cross each bear a false relief panel in an ivy leaf motif. The stone is bordered by two incised lines running around the edges of the inscribed face. There are also a number of carved drops of blood on the heart.

_N 1775 In south of graveyard, a recumbent limestone slab with a bevelled edge and concave quadrant shoulders in its upper left and right corners. In situ, facing east. Incised, mostly illegible text. The upper portion of the stone bears an incised ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals hanging above the cross-bar of the ‘H’. The form of the ‘S’ is unusual in that it appears to have been started too high on the stone and then abandoned, leaving only the form of a reversed ‘C’. The cross and monogram are surrounded by an incised, semi-circular band of radiating, incised triangles, giving the impression of a sun face. This band extends around the edges of the stone to form a plain border. Near the head of the stone, to the left and right, there is a roughly incised circle with an incised cross saltire; each situated between the cusps of two of the radiating triangles. The bottom left hand corner of the stone is broken. Due to the extremely weathered condition of the stone it is difficult to be sure how many lines of text were originally carved.

The upper portion of the stone bears an incised cross potent. The upper left hand corner of the stone is broken. The lower left-hand portion of the stone bears a large, and crudely incised, inverted triangle, while to its’ right is an incised element, resembling a stake with a pointed lower end. The two elements of decoration are linked by two horizontal lines, now very faint. The overall impression is that of a stylised plough, presumably the occupational mark of a farmer. The use of the plough-sock and coulter as occupational symbols is common west of the Shannon, and there are similar examples at Claregalway Abbey, and Loughrea (Pers. Comm. Mr. J. Higgins). See also No. 13. See Figs. 21 & 22.

The upper portion of the stone bears a deeply incised ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. After the ‘S’ of the monogram there appears to be a second ‘S’ which may have been recut. Between the ‘IHS’ monogram and the main body of the text there appears to be four lines of incised text, thought they are now so worn as to be illegible. The upper right hand edge of the stone is smashed. The whole stone is bordered by a bevelled edge, inside which is a broad and shallow incised band.

The upper portion of the stone bears a deeply incised ‘IHS’ monogram with a cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the omega shaped cross-bar of the ‘H’. In east of graveyard, a limestone headstone with curved shoulders and a rounded top. In situ, facing east. 1.15m high x 1.46m wide. Incised, partly illegible text with traces of layout lines. The upper portion of the stone bears the ‘IHS’ monogram in false relief with a Latin cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the lozenge shaped cross-bar of the ‘H’. A semi-circular false relief panel above the ‘IHS’ bears the Incised text: “ECCE SIGNUM SALUTUS”. To both the left and right of the ‘IHS’ monogram the stone bears a low false relief carving of a ciborium, and outside this again, a stylised foliage motif. The first line of the inscription appears to bear a mason’s error, as the first two letters in the word ‘Catherine’ are recut over what appears to have been the letters ‘Iho/e’. Also, the letters ‘ri’ appear to have been recut over ‘I/ha’. After the word ‘alias’, in the first line of text, there is a roughly incised heart-shaped panel which may cover a further mason’s error, or a flaw in the stone. The ‘D’ in the word ‘RequiescaDt’ in the seventh line also appears to be a mason’s error.

The tops of the letters ‘I’ and ‘H’ are in a similar design to the terminals at the arms of the cross. To the left of this is the false relief hand, dexter (of St. Peter) holding a key. The upper left hand portion of the stone bears a skull and crossbones, or ‘memento mori’, a winged and naked Archangel Gabriel, in profile, in the process of walking, and blowing a trumpet on “the day of judgment”, and standing on a torse. Above this is a quadrant circle with radiating lines carved from its centre. The upper right hand portion of the stone bears a set of scales of judgment, tipping to the right, along with a false relief rosette. In the fourth line of the inscription there is a carved ‘)’ shape after the figure ‘6’ which appears to be a mason’s error. Near the base of this ‘6’ there is also what appears to be a carved teardrop, and may have been included to cover a mason’s error, or a flaw in the stone.

Leaning against the external face of the east wall of the graveyard, near the entrance gate, a limestone slab. 2.13m long x 0.88m wide. Incised, clear text with evidence of layout lines. The upper portion of the stone bears a large false relief ‘IHS’ monogram with a Latin cross with expanded terminals, fitched, springing from the cross-bar of the cross. The false relief, ‘INRI’ monogram is divided on either side of the shaft of the cross. Beneath the ‘IHS’ monogram is an incised panel, extending the full width of the slab, bearing a false relief foliage design, extending up between the legs of the ‘H’. Two false relief panels with rounded ends, spring from the upper corners of the stone, forming a ‘u’ shaped arc on either side of the shaft of the cross. They bear the incised text: “Surguc Moritui et / Venite ad Judicium”. Both the inscription and the decoration of the stone are very clear and unweathered, and appear to concur with the tradition that the stone was never placed within the graveyard, but left outside the gate after a disagreement over the spelling of the text (pers. comm. Mr. H. Thomas, Creggaun).

A limestone headstone with rounded, stepped, and concave shoulders, surmounted by a ringed cross. Fragmentary, lying loose, currently lying loose on sill of east window of church. c. 0.76m wide. Incised, clear text. The centre of the cross bears a false relief, interlaced ‘IHS’ monogram. Each of the four panels of the arms, head and shaft bears a false relief mascle. Set in each is a false relief trefoil, slipped. The first line of the text is incised into a false relief ‘n’ shaped panel with ‘v’ shaped terminals. The stone was reassembled from various fragments found in the graveyard. We are informed that this stone stood on the plot where No. 104 now stands, but was demolished c. 1988.

A worn limestone fragment of a cross patonce, pierced at the centre by a lozenge (similar to the that surmounting No. 4). 0.54m x 0.23m. Fragmentary, lying loose. The fragment is of interest as there does not appear to be any extant headstone to which it could have fitted. At the time of surveying it lay in the graveyard, beside No. 46. See Fig. 27.

PB In graveyard, in corner of south wall of church and east face of buttress, a recumbent limestone slab with angled upper corners. Moved, facing east. 1.43m long x 0.65m wide. Incised, legible text. The stone bears a long relief cross with a pointed head. The area around the cross is relatively roughly tooled. The arms of the cross bear a single, incised band which may have borne some form of inscription, but if so it is too weathered, or damaged to read. The lower edge of the right arm of the cross bear the incised initials “PB”. This stone lies directly on top of No. 178.

In graveyard, in corner of south wall of church and east face of buttress, a broken, recumbent limestone slab with a slightly rounded head. Moved, facing east. c. 1.65m long x 0.73m wide. Incised, mostly legible text. The upper portion of the stone bears an incised panel with decoration in both relief and false relief. The lower central portion of the panel bears a high false relief ‘IHS’ monogram, with a cross patonce springing from the cross-bar of the ‘H’. Set at angles on either side of the cross is a winged cherub head. The wings, with delicate feather detail, are carved in false relief, while the fully featured heads are in relief. Each of the four corners of the panel bears a quadrant-circle with incised triangular lines radiating from their centres. The edge of the panel is bordered by an incised line running inside its’ moulded edge. The stone is bordered by a moulded internal edge, external to which is a single incised line. The first two lines of the text are carved in a slightly ‘n’ shaped arc. The stone is broken horizontally, through the seventh line of the text. The stone appears to have been dumped here with Nos. 176 and 178.
