Gravestone Inscriptions from the churchyard of

All Saints and St James Church, King’s Cliffe, Northamptonshire

Recorded by members of King’s Cliffe Heritage between 1999 and 2003

A book of these inscriptions and an illustrated plan of the churchyard are available at the back

of the Parish church for reference by visitors.

Gravestone numbers relate to those on the illustrated plan of the churchyard. Inscriptions have

been checked against burial records for the years 1813 to 1907. Question marks indicate uncertain

reading. Underscore marks have been used, where possible, to show the number of any missing

letters, otherwise a dotted line has been used to indicate unreadable text. Italics have been used for

notes and do not form part of the inscriptions. Stone masons’ names are shown in square brackets.

December 20th 1867 aged 30 years. “Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing

of the great God and our saviour, Jesus Christ.”

3) In loving memory of MARY, wife of WILLIAM GREEN who died October 25th 1879 aged 70

years. An industrious wife and a loving mother. Also of WILLIAM GREEN who died June 1st

1889 aged 82 years. “His end was peace.”

July 20 1853 aged 14; CALVIN who died May 10 1854 aged 20; ELIZABETH, who died May

21 1854 aged 13; and five who died in infancy.

Camp February 11th 1919, aged 51 years.

July 7th 1854 in the 31st year of her age. (Burial records say 29 years old)

77) This stone is erected to perpetuate the memory of WILLIAM DAKIN who died Jan 22nd 1840,

aged 85 years.

104 (Writing desk tomb, with an upright slab bearing three panels. Memorial inscriptions are

on these panels. Eulogy to William Law covers the vertical front of the desk.)

Left panel reads: REVD WILLIAM LAW, who died April 9 1761 aged 75.

Centre panel reads: M. HESTER GIBBON, who died June 22nd 1799, aged 86.

Right panel reads: M. SARAH LAW, who died June 11 1781, aged 71.

Vertical front of desk reads: “He was well known to the World by a number of truly Christian

Pious writings, exemplified by a life spent in a manner suitable to a worthy and true disciple of

his Heavenly Divine Crucified Master and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lived and Spoke in and by

him; in his younger days he sufficiently distinguished Himself by His parts and progress in

humane literature; afterwards taking the advice of our Saviour to the Rich young Man he totally

renounced the World and followed Christ in meekness, humility and self-denial, and in his last

years he was wholly swallowed up in his love to God and mankind, so that Virtue in him was

nothing else but Heavenly love and Heavenly flame; in parts and sense inferior to none, with wit

most amiable, with learning stored, his talents great and high were quite Sublime in love to God

with all his mind and Heart his time was all employed in things Divine, by serving God, in

kindness to mankind; the poor, the maim’d, the blind have lost in Him a Friend, a helper and a

strong Protector.”

ARCHIBALD HUTCHESON, Esq, late of the Middle Temple, London. Born 28 March 1689,

died Jan 31 1781. (Several lines of verse are very difficult to read, but ascribed to Catherine

Gambrelli)

105) Sacred to the memory of a beloved and affectionate father, JOHN HOWES, who departed this

life on the 25th day of April 1816 in the 66th year of his age. “For here have we no continuing

city, may we seek one to come. Hebrews. 13”. Also … mother, ANN HOWES, relict of JOHN

HOWES who departed this life 27th February 1828, aged 76.

106) Sacred to the memory of MARY wife of Jn HALFORD of Dyke, who died July 7 1810, aged

36(?) years. Also of MARY their daughter, who died Nov 1 1810(?)

107) Sacred to the memory of DINAH, daughter of JOHN and ANN HOWES, died Dec. 28 1802(?),

aged 18(?). Remainder illegible.

108) MARY ANN, daughter of THOS & FRANS (FRANCES) HOWES, died Jany 2 1853, aged 50

years. Also, THOMAS, their son, died Feby 26 1853, aged 44 years. Also, SARAH, the wife of

the above THOMAS HOWES, died September .. ? ……? (looks like 1787, but impossible) aged

44 years. (The only Sarah Howes in the burial records was buried 22 August 1825, aged 42.)

A small memorial stone has been set on top of the wall along Church Walk to the west of the

church. It has the following inscription: CHARLES and ALICE HULL, who died July 7th 1897

aged 10 years and aged 8 months. “On other ……, now she rests with the Lord.”

This stone was found lying in the small paddock behind the wall and set in its present position

when the wall was repaired and capped in 2001.
