President’s Report
This week our focus was on our club’s connection with youth. We had sponsored Stacey Cadman to
participate in the weeklong Rotary Youth Leadership Award program, and she wanted to report back to the
club on how it had changed her outlook on life. Stacey, one of the camp leaders came along and explained
the purpose of the program.
At our Board meeting, we found out that everything bodes well for the setting up of an Interact Club at
Melba College in the first term of the 2015 school year.
Last Sunday I was matched up as a mentor of a Rotoract student in the Future Focus program.
As reported last week, we are moving towards the finals of the four‐way test speaking competition for year
10 students.
In all these programs we are working with young people from 12 to 30 years old, the future generations. I
believe we can be proud of these efforts to extend into the community.
Till next week,
John
Chairman Report Our Guest Speaker for Tuesday September 16, 2014 was Stacey Cadman. Stacey was our Clubs candidate for the most recent RYLA program. Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a personal development program for youth in the 18 to 30 age group. Stacey spoke to us about her experiences of being taken outside ones comfort zone, having to work with strangers on group activities and give impromptu speeches. Stacey at the time of the RYLA program was working for Maroondah Council as a volunteer in Youth Services area. She is now employed by Maroondah Council on a casual basis and hopes to find full time employment in the Youth Services area. Ross Taylor
Social Weekend Marysville September 12 ‐14, 2014
The Marysville weather was great for those who ventured into the mountains for a weekend break away
from the maddening crowd. The Black Spur Hotel catered for our need for food and warmth on both Friday
and Saturday evening and the courtesy bus ensured all travelled safely.
As soon as the sun disappeared from view the temperature dropped quickly to about 3 deg C.
There was ample time on Saturday to explore the Marysville Village and to enjoy a coffee or two before
setting out to Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm where several fish committed suicide in order for us to enjoy
a BBQ fish lunch.
The surroundings were very pleasant and a glass of wine just set up the occasion.
Later Roger organised a camp fire and a sing along before it was time to head out for dinner.
After a leisurely breakfast and pack up it was time for a coffee and a visit to Steavenson Falls before
heading home.
All in all it was a great weekend.

Speaker Sukkar, Michael, MP Question No.
Mr SUKKAR (Deakin) (13:34): I wish to acknowledge today all of the students who recently took part in two public speaking competitions hosted by Rotary clubs in my electorate of Deakin. I applaud the Rotary clubs for providing these young people with a chance to practice an important skill and I was delighted to be able support both events. Congratulations to the students who took part in the Rotary Club of Croydon competition at Melba College, including: Caleb Cowell, Claire Hurley, Darcy Morgan, Scarlett Gooding, Merryn Rowlands, Peerson Lynch, Matthew Lucas, Dylan Maxworth, Nicholas Tellus, Tiana Ingram, Olivia Gersh, Charlee Rennie, Jack Clifton, Joshua Tilker, Nick Kokkolis, Bailey Watson-Karpinski, Kyla Naismith, Charlie Bartlett, Lucy Coucher, Emma Williamson and Maddie Monument. I also want to congratulate all the students who participated in the Rotary Club of Forest Hill's contest at Parkmore Primary School. The students included: Ulani Bermar, Paige Davidson, Charlotte Edwards, Jordan Manos, Briget Ewert, Connor Downie, Mahydia Hosseinian, Charlotte Hammond, Saurish Sharma and Zoe Anthonis. Well done to all the students. They were both outstanding nights. Again, congratulations to both Rotary clubs.
Dear Edwina
I hope you’re well.
I just wished to congratulate the Rotary Club of Croydon, once again, for organising such a fantastic public speaking competition for local primary school students.
In fact, I recently spoke in the Parliament about this event, recognising both the students involved as well as Rotary for providing them with an important opportunity to practice their public speaking skills.
I have attached a copy of the Hansard, which can also be found on the Australian Parliament House website. I would appreciate it if you could share this with the students and your fellow Rotary members.
Thank you, and I look forward to supporting future Rotary events.
Best regards
Michael

Rotary 4 way test
This week the Rotary Club of Croydon were represented by two stars, Molly Darcy and our own Marlene
Sinclair. Last Tuesday evening Molly from Ringwood Secondary College and United Youth Media
represented our club in the 4 way test, speaking on her life changing experience of going to Pohnpei. Molly
spoke passionately about the fact that educational experiences outside the four walls of the classroom are
what really make you as a person. Molly was unlucky to not make it through and was congratulated by the
judges for both her content and delivery.
Also starring was our Marlene. Posied, humourous and forever the entertainer, Marlene hosted what was
another spectacular event. 6 speeches and 5 schools, all students delivered with passion. This truly is a
superb opportunity for young people to practice a very important life skill of presenting to an audience.
Michael Sukkar in his parliamentary address has acknowledged just how important this is for the students
and Rotary.

Indigenous Health Scholarships Program
On Monday September 1 John van Holsteyn and I visited Rydges in Bell Street to join an Indigenous Health
Scholarships Information Night. The evening was hosted by Cheryl Deguara from ARH in Parramatta.
The Scholarships Program commenced in 2003. Since inception 179 graduates have benefitted from this
program. In the most recent round of scholarships there were 60 applicants for the 17 places available.
More scholarships could be awarded if more funding was available. Twenty percent of all indigenous
doctors who qualified over the past 10 years have been assisted by these scholarships.
Our Club has supported this program for many years. One of the students we supported Veronica Kyle
graduated as a Doctor in 2013 and is currently doing her internship. This year we are supporting Danika
Dale, whose family live in Balranald and is studying Nursing at Latrobe in Bendigo.
The Indigenous Health Scholarships Program is open to support from individuals, Rotary Clubs and
companies. A donation of any size is most welcome however a full scholarship is awarded for $2,500
donated. Both State and Federal Governments contribute to this scheme. Donations should be sent to
Australian Rotary Health, P O Box 3455 Parramatta NSW 2124 and clearly marked for Indigenous Health
Scholarships.

NEW MEMBER Craig Mentiplay On Tuesday Night we inducted a new member Craig Mentiplay. Craig’s resume is impressive with a period of time in the police force in N.S.W. He will make an extremely good contribution to Rotary and we in turn will present resources to him for his own personal endeavours.
Welcome aboard Craig. We had some magnificent blurry photos which I could not use.
Membership Development
Last Tuesday Richard and David were awarded Membership Development Brass Pins for introducing two members each this year to Rotary. The race is on David. Do you need a challenge? How many more members can attain a Development Pin?
? Have you invited some-one to our Rotary Meeting this week?
It is not that hard. Time to light up and continue your journey with Rotary and be proud of the Badge you wear. Look at what we did last year and it is, going to get even bigger and
brighter this year. Share the light. We are!
Membership Fees are due. Eric is eager!!!!!!
