  • E veryone knows how difficult moving can be. Just imagine moving a working laboratory full of delicate instruments, research materials and several thousand live mice into an entirely new environment!

It wasn’t easy, but today the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation has made itself at home in its new 27,000 square foot laboratory facility near Reliant Stadium.

    The “new lab,” as the

team is calling it, was originally occupied by a biotechnology firm, so many of the laboratory conditions were already in place. Additional renovations and donated furnishings transformed the facility into an ideal environment for the Foundation’s continued research into more effective treatments for cancer.

The move was a big step for the Stehlin team, which for 40 years operated in a remodeled auto parts facility near St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Everyone who toured the original laboratory expressed amazement at the quality of pioneering research conducted in such humble surroundings.

In addition to increasing square footage and updating much needed equipment, this new address consolidates the Stehlin administrative offices and laboratory in the same building for the first time in many years, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the operation.

  • It Took a Village

The move to the new laboratory was accomplished through the efforts of the CHRISTUS Health leadership team, headed up by CEO Dr. Tom Royer, who found the building, negotiated the 10-year lease and facilitated the build-out. The support of Sister Lillian Anne Healy and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word was also instrumental.

Stehlin researchers and support staff were all involved in the packing and unpacking of fixtures and research projects from one laboratory to another. Today the staff of the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation is delighted with the new working conditions.

Said Dana Vardeman, Laboratory Supervisor, “Obviously we are proud of what we accomplished in our former space, but we’re very excited about the future in these modern and sophisticated surroundings. We are thrilled to be settled and ready to go to work.”

Pharmacology Laboratory: In this laboratory, researchers analyze the effects of potential anticancer drugs after they have been administered to either animals or humans. These studies include absorption, toxicology, and excretion.

Organic Chemistry Laboratory: This laboratory is the setting for the development of new anticancer compounds.

Synthetic Chemistry Laboratory: Researchers use the synthetic chemistry lab to develop and perfect anticancer compounds.

Tissue Culture Laboratory: This is where the CHRISTUS Stehlin team conducts initial chemotherapy screening tests to determine the effectiveness of newly discovered anticancer compounds.

Conference Room: The conference room is an ideal setting for guest speakers and seminars as well as staff meetings. The Giving Wall provides a lasting reminder of the many tireless advocates who have supported the Foundation over 40 years.

A New Beginning: The Dedication and Celebration of the New Lab

    Dedication to Life

On the next morning, a dedication ceremony was held inside the same tent.

This was an emotional occasion for many people who recognize the new laboratory as a major milestone in realizing the vision of founder Dr. John S. Stehlin. Beginning in 1969, Dr. Stehlin and his colleague Dr. Beppino Giovanella set out to reduce the time lag between the research bench and patient’s bedside, and to develop more effective treatments for people with cancer.

As master of ceremonies, Bobby Anderson introduced speakers Sister Lillian Anne Healy, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, the order which aligned with Dr. Stehlin in his holistic approach to healing.

Other speakers at the cer-emony included Raymond Khoury, Chairman of the Stehlin Board of Directors, and Dr. Thomas Royer, who is stepping down as CEO of CHRISTUS Health. Dr. Royer, an ardent champion of the Steh-lin Foundation, has graciously agreed to continue to serve on the Board of Directors for the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation.

The centerpiece of the event was a blessing for the building, the people and the organization provided by Father Thomas Byrne, Chaplain at the Villa del Matel.

    Celebrating the Move

On February 17, 2010, a white tent was erected in the parking lot of the new CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research just south of the Texas Medical Center. By 7 p.m., underneath a cool and starry sky, classical music was playing, hors d’oeuvres were being served, and tours were being conducted through the brightly-lit new space.

It was an evening of celebration for the team that had worked hard to make the move happen and for supporters who realized the significance of the move.

Our sincere appreciation for those contributions that were received after November 9, 2010

Super-TroupersThank you to all the people who made the 2010 Friends Gala a smashing success!

  • Time has passed, but the memories of the 2010 Friends of the Stehlin Foundation gala are still fresh in our minds. On November 13, 2010, more than 500 people “took a chance on us” and spent another fabulous evening basking in great music, great fun and, of course, great Friends.

The theme for the 30th annual Friends of the Stehlin Foundation Gala was magic – and the night was truly captivating. A spellbinding performance by ABBA tribute band adbacadabra recreated non-stop singalong hits from the ABBA repertoire like “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Super Trouper” with their platform heels and headbands to make the fantasy complete.

After the headline show, crowds boogied late into the night to BAND X, a popular Atlanta dance band, playing tunes from the 60’s through the 90’s. Guests delighted in the flashing favors – rings, necklaces and sunglasses – which set the entire ballroom aglow in neon colors. With a ceiling full of disco balls, glitter, metallic tablecloths and more, the atmosphere was . . . magical.

30 Years of Fun & Fundraising

The evening began in the reception area for the Westin Galleria ballroom, where this year’s outstanding silent auction items stirred up interest during the cocktail hour. Photos were offered to guests with their choice of mock magazine covers throughout the night.

Emceed by Dominque Sachse, TV news anchor from KPRC Channel 2, the gala was co-chaired by Tamara and Harrison Bibb and Becca and Philip Weigand. The evening honored ardent supporters John and Lindy Rydman for their long history of contributing to the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation.

    Surprise Ending

The amazing thing about the Stehlin events is that they succeed in generating funds as much as generating excitement. This year’s event netted $368,000, which will be used to fund the cancer research and clinical activities at the Foundation.

This year’s net proceeds bring the total to more than $11 million donated by the Friends of the Stehlin Foundation over three decades.

Robert F. Anderson, President of the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research, summarized, “Every year we are overcome with gratitude at the support we receive from the Friends, and their friends. Since 1980 this group has been a lifeline for us. It is just our good luck that they know how to throw the best party in town, and they did it again this year!”

In April, the Aetna Insur-ance Company published a clinical policy bulletin in-dicating that the hyperthermic (heated) perfusion operation for the treatment of advanced melanoma of the extremities is now considered a medically necessary procedure.

The CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation laboratory direc-tory, Dr. Beppino Giovanella, was the first to demonstrate the selective sensitivity of can-cer cells to heat, starting in the late 1960’s.

Based on “Dr. G’s” research, Dr. Stehlin was the first to combine heat and chemother-apy (hyperthermic perfusion) for the treatment of advanced melanomas of the arms and legs, essentially eliminating

the necessity for amputations – and improving survival rates by 300%.

Foundation researchers and physicians have published several papers on this topic in prestigious medical journals.

Due to Dr. Stehlin’s and Dr. Gionvanella’s work, hyper-thermia has been an accepted form of cancer treatment in Europe for many years, on a par with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

All of us at The CHRIS-TUS Stehlin Foundation are proud and gratified to see the hyperthermic perfusion operation finally accepted as a “best practice” in cancer treatment.

In the 1970‘s The Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research spearheaded the establishment of a repository of human breast cancer tumor lines, which led to an explosion of research in breast cancer therapeutics. One of the outcomes was the Foundation’s collaboration with Dr. Dennis Slamon at UCLA, which resulted in the development of Herceptin®, a potent drug now commonly used to treat certain breast cancers.

Forty years later, many of the human breast cancer xenografts used throughout the world for breast cancer research come from the originals established by the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation.

The CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation will soon be undertaking an effort to build a similar repository of human cancer cell lines, this time for prostate tumors. This collection of cell lines and xenografts hopefully will enlarge the number of models available, and allow researchers to study the entire spectrum of prostate cancer subtypes, from indolent to aggressive, and from primary to metastatic.

As with the breast cancer repository, the prostate lines will be made available to the entire medical community. This collection is expected to greatly accelerate the learning curve on this poorly understood form of cancer.

    A Need for Knowledge

With this project, the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation is responding to a need felt around the world. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the entire Western hemisphere.

However, models available to study prostate cancer are alarmingly few, and no new models have emerged as particularly effective or poignant in the last several decades.

In this study the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation will be collaborating with surgeons and pathologists from other institutions. A broad base will provide

access to a large number of patients and tumors with clinically and biologically distinct features, greatly enhancing the opportunities for study.

    Building Tools for Research

When completed, the prostate cancer models will become part of what is now one of the largest human tumor banks in the world, with more than 600 lines from the most prevalent cancers.

Researchers at the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation will use the Foundation’s signature nude mice to cultivate the cell lines. Techniques perfected by the Stehlin team through the cultivation of other types of cancer cell lines will be used to improve the success rate of prostate cancer cell development.

Dr. Beppino Giovanella, Laboratory Director, summarized, “Our objective is to create a diverse library of prostate cancer models to accurately represent the broad spectrum of the disease. Understanding the biology and diverse nature of prostate cancer is essential to the development of novel therapeutic strategies to combat it.“
