The Cell Cycle and Mitosis
Chromosomes
oMade of DNAoEach chromosome consists of two sister chromatids attached at a centromere
Chromosome
Cell Cycle
oDuring the cell cycle, a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form 2 daughter cells, each with each of which then begins the cycle again.
oOrder of cell cycle is: Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokensis (IPMATC)
InterphaseInterphase – growth and regular cell activity.oMost of cell life is spent in Interphase.olongest period of the complete cell cycle oDNA replicates
MitosisoDivision of somatic cells.o4 phases.oRemember Interphase is NOT part of Mitosis.
Prophase
oFirst stage of Mitosis
oChromatin condenses into chromosomes
oCentrioles separate and spindle fiber begins to form.
oNuclear membrane breaks down
Prophase
Metaphase
oSecond Phase of MitosisoChromosomes line up in middle of cell. (meet in middle)
oEach chromosome connects to spindle fiber at centromere.
Metaphase
Anaphase
oThird Phase of Mitosis
oSister chromatids pull apart or away
o individual chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell.
Anaphase
Telophase
oFourth and Final Stage of Mitosis
oChromosomes gather at opposite ends of cell, lose distinct shapes
oTwo new nuclear membranes form.
Telophase
Cytokinesis
oNOT part of Mitosis
oDivision of cytoplasm after mitosis
oContractile ring tightens creating "cleavage furrow"
oEach daughter cell has an identical set of duplicate chromosomes
Cell Cycle
oReview processoSynchronized Swimming Mitosis
