32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time Faith is our belief in God. Religion is the way we express it and theology is the way we explain it. So says the pastor. What is remarkable is that all three are interconnected. What we do in liturgy affects what we believe and how we explain it influences our faith. They are not three separate entities, but different aspects of our relationship with God. It makes a difference what religion we practice, how we practice it and how we explain it.

Jesus debates the Sadducees on their own terms. They do not believe in the resurrection or life after death. Using Scripture, Jesus deflects their question and focuses on what they have overlooked. God is the God of the living, proven by the words of Moses. God is in relationship with all His people, living and deceased.

It is easy to get lost in theological debate, trying to figure out if God exists, why evil happens and what will happen next. But all the reasoning in the world does not reveal God. Faith is more a matter of the heart than of the mind. There comes a moment where we make a ‘leap of faith,’ when faced with all the evidence, teaching and experience we have, we make a choice to believe in God and trust Him at His Word. In our relationship with God, we experience His love and His Presence. Live confidently in His love. In His own time, God will answer all our questions.

HAITIAN COMMUNITY'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

John Morin.

Fr. Joe’s Bible Study Schedule Classes have begun at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Center at 12:00 p.m. The class schedule is as follows:

November 14, 2013 March 20, 2014 December 12, 2013 April 10, 2014 January 9, 2014 May 15, 2014 February 13, 2014 June 12, 2014

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

A near-by day care center often takes the kids out for a walk around the neighborhood. It looks like a small human train as each kid holds on to a long rope that connects them altogether. As they walk along, they call out warnings to their friends: car! curb! puddle! oops! They look around as they walk, staring at people or signs, bumping into each other and sometimes tripping over themselves! No one can help but smile at the little engines that could!

Our family ties help us navigate through life. We hold on to the love and memories we share; we depend on each other for warnings and support; we offer help and hope so everyone makes the journey of life safely. Families are not always perfect, and at times, things are not ideal. But that does not prevent us from reaching out to others, especially those who have no one, those who have been abandoned or lost. In the holidays ahead, everyone is willing to help others, but it is a short-lived desire and often distant at best. Beat the rush! Start now to offer healing and hope, to support and comfort, to notice the pain and suffering of others. It’s all about sticking together, hanging on to the rope of faith, hope and love. Let us help someone make the journey of life safely! It will make your own journey that much better.

From Fr. Carlos As we face the mystery of what happens after death, a variety of opinions has arisen throughout the course of

human history. Even among God’s chosen people, there were a number of opinions. The Pharisees believed in the

resurrection and the Sadducees did not. Jesus inserts Himself into this confusion as He does into other areas of human life

and with His light He begins to show us the truth of the matter. In this week’s Gospel reading He reassures us of the

possibility of eternal life and He gives us a glimpse of the life of Heaven. This teaching that Jesus offers us is a truth which

we will not fully understand on this side of Heaven, but if we begin to embrace it as best we can, it will give deeper meaning

and order to the course of our lives.

In the reading from the Book of Maccabees we read part of the account of the torture and martyrdom of a mother

and her seven sons. They faced all of this not for some large-scale act of aggression but rather for refusing to eat some

pork. It may seem like an absurd situation to us. In their place I suspect that many of us would have eaten the pork rather

than face death, and we would have done exactly the wrong thing. This lesson may seem like a difficult one, but we have to

remember that Jesus reaffirms it when He tells us in the Gospel of John, “Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates

his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life” (Jn 12:25). Eating a piece of pork seems like a small gesture, and thanks

to the vision God gave to Saint Peter, pork and shrimp and other foods are no longer forbidden to us (Acts 11:4-10). The

lesson, however, remains the same. Seemingly small and insignificant gestures on the human level take on a deeper

meaning when we see them with God’s eyes. Just like that mother and her sons, Christians throughout the centuries have

preferred to die rather than to do things as simple as offering incense to an image of the emperor or stepping upon a holy

card or a crucifix. We also have to remember that the heroic witness of these Christians is not locked in some long-ago

barbaric past. It continues in many places throughout the world today. Their witness teaches us the importance of what

Jesus has given us. Their witness also reminds us that this life is good and we should enjoy it, but we should never do so at

the cost of eternal life. We need to weigh our actions and decisions not by how they may appear to others but by how they

appear to God and the laws He gave us to govern our lives. While others may judge us in this life their judgments don’t

have eternal consequences. On the other hand, if we strive to live in a way that pleases God we’ll also be living in a way that

does the most good to others and brings joy to us and to many around us.
