All the readings for this week speak of foreigners who have accepted faith in the one God. The gospel tells of a great learning moment for Jesus. He ignores the pleas of the Gentile woman but, ultimately, she forces him to recognise that salvation is available to all people who have faith. Question of the Week

“Woman, great is your faith.” Matthew 15:28

At school: Do I talk often to Jesus when I am worried or don’t understand?

At work or study: How can I be more persistent in praying for wisdom,

for courage?

In my family life: Do we turn to God as a matter of course…for guidance

in our family?

Discipleship this week! Print out a picture of people you find strange, or uncomfortable with

Place it on the dining table---take turns in praying for them.

The Joy of the Gospel The sadness of much we hear from day to day in our news headlines and papers can at times be overwhelming. We begin to wonder where we

might look for inspiration or hope. At any one time, as I see a Sunday congregation before me, I am conscious that families and individuals have been experiencing a full range of emotions from joyful celebration to grave concern or the pain and loss of bereavement. The presence of so many young families last weekend for our Confirmation welcome Mass was indeed a joy and uplifting. We look forward to accompanying them through the coming weeks and months as they prepare for Confirmation, and later, next year, Reconciliation and First Communion.

Pope Francis in his encyclical, The Joy of the Gospel, invites and inspires us to look beyond our loss and sadness, beyond our own preoccupation to a wider world in need of that message of hope.

“The Gospel, radiant with the glory of Christ’s cross, constantly invites us to rejoice. ‘Rejoice!’ is the angel’s greeting to Mary (Lk 1:28). Mary’s visit to Elizabeth makes John leap for joy in his mother’s womb (cf. Lk 1:41). In her song of praise, Mary proclaims: ‘My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour’ (Lk 1:47) Evangelii Gaudium, ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ (#5, 10).

From St. Augustine:

Lord, You are never needy,

yet You are pleased with gain. You are never

covetous, yet You exact interest on all You give us.

Parish Council Report Our new parish council convened for the first time this past Wednesday night at St Cecilia’s School for

our regular meeting.

We were delighted to welcome on board our three newly endorsed members in the persons of Andrea

Hogan, Larry McKittrick and Tim Boys.

A review of the recent Parish Assembly, planning for the forthcoming parish Picnic (August 31st) and also

for the Parish Council Retreat day on September 21 were important items on the agenda.

Ongoing issues with regard to parish staffing, in particular the unfilled roles of Pastoral Associate and Youth Ministry

Coordinator were also discussed. On the occasion of the retreat day a new executive will be elected from among the

membership and the Council will reflect on a document related to Pope Francis’ recent encyclical, ‘The Joy of the Gospel’

will also be presented.

Can you spare 1-2 hours a week with our elderly residents?.

Should you wish to get involved we would love to hear from you!
