5 From the Pastor

My Fellow Americans,

This week we celebrate the founding of our nation. On Saturday, the Fourth of July, we remember that 244 years ago our nation began with lofty ideals of freedom, truth and a democratic form of government. Our country has been an example for many countries around the world as a beacon of hope and a better way of life for its citizens.

Our nation is certainly not perfect. We have had many struggles, including fighting amongst ourselves with the Civil War. We seem to continue fighting amongst ourselves to this day. There is a sharp divide in our country that seems to be growing even sharper.

It’s my hope and prayer that our country will live up to what we say in the Pledge of Allegiance: “One nation, under God, indivisi-ble, with liberty and justice for all.” It seems to me that we’re not one nation, and God is swept aside and placed in some distant corner. With the current issues of racism and violence, liberty and justice for all seem like a distant dream for some. It’s quite daunting the divisions we are currently facing.

I’d like you to reflect this week on the prayer George Washington wrote for our country. It brings God back into the picture when we’re talking about our country, our problems and our future. It’s quite poignant, even after all these years.

George Washington’s Prayer for His Country

“I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have these United States in His holy protection, that He would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that He would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Region, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation. Amen.”

Washington prays for us to be more God-like: growing in love, service, justice, mercy and humility. The more we foster and grow in these traits of God, as a nation and as individuals, I believe that we’ll be a happier and more prosperous nation. Celebrate your freedom. Remember what we’re celebrating: One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

HAPPY FOURTH!

GOSPEL MEDITATION

July 5, 2020 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are all familiar with the refrain, “You have put on Christ. In him you have been baptized. Alleluia, alleluia!” In Baptism, we “put on” Christ. In putting on Christ, we put on all that Christ is and represents: hope, faith, and love. We are no longer bound to the sins and failures of the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on human means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and un-fulfilled dreams. There is always hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for all of His chil-dren and for us. We have been given a road map to guide our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey.

There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there anything in your past that you regret? Any decision or memory that continues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this uncanny ability to con-tinue beating ourselves up over things we can no longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on Christ means that I can now bring God’s unconditional love to my hurtful memories and sinful choices. With each new mo-ment and every new choice, I can start clean and live in freedom.

Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They came to baptism not really knowing who they were, with pasts that were broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them and wanting the love they saw witnessed in the lives of those who believed. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have been! They could now have the support of a community, full participation in the sacraments of the church, focus for their disordered lives, consolation, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about.

Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in and through you? When we truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become much lighter. It is odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be won-derful if those weights could be lifted and joy experienced!
