Please Support The Catholic Service

…...using your gifts to serve one another

Each year the success of The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal depends upon the generous response of every Catholic household -- it depends on you!! Every dollar donated to The Appeal is restricted and supports only the work of 14 diocesan ministries which serve thousands of people throughout southern Illinois each year. To learn more about the good works your gift makes possible, visit www.diobelle.org and click on The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal poster or call Judy Phillips at 618-722-5007 – she’d love to hear from you!

So far, 62 St. Joseph Parish households have re-sponded and $11,316.35 (56.3%) has been pledged. Our parish goal is $20,100. Thank you for your dona-tions and consideration.

A New Ministry:

"The Heavenly Dusters!"

St. Joseph Parish is looking for dusters, male or female! The dusters are groups of 3 or 4 parishioners who volunteer to do a weekly cleaning of the church. Teams will be on rotating schedules. If you are willing to give of your time and talent to help clean the church, please give Cindy a call at the Parish Office 618-993-3194 #2.

Evangelization, Stewardship & Community Building

The St. Joseph/St. Paul Pastoral Council met this past week and has recommended that our parish partnership es-

tablish a missionary partnership with the Glenmary Missioners. Our parish partnership, with the approval of the

Finance Councils of each parish, will enter into a year-long covenant with the Glenmary Missioners. The finan-

cial commitment for the year for each parish will be $600. I am confident that in the months and years ahead, our

parishes will be the beneficiaries of this relationship and will serve us in our commitment to respond to our disci-

pleship call to evangelize and share the faith.

Glenmary Home Missioners, founded in 1939, is a Catholic society of priests and brothers who, along with co-

workers, are dedicated to establishing a Catholic presence in rural areas and small towns of the United States

where the Catholic Church is not yet effectively present. Glenmary missioners and lay coworkers strive to: serve

the spiritual and material needs of those living in some of the most impoverished counties in the South and Appa-

lachia; proclaim and witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ and the power of God's love, mercy and justice.

Attributed to St. Augustine is the observation: “To sing is to pray twice.” It is a delight to dedicate and to bless

the new organ at St. Joseph Church. I am so honored to have had the opportunity to serve nine years as pastor of a

parish community that sings and participates with enthusiasm in the sacred liturgy; and to be part of a community

with such a talented choir and musicians. Please plan to participate this Sunday at 2:00 pm in the dedication and

blessing of the organ. The organ concert by Dr. James Reifinger of SIUC School of Music will be enjoyable.

I am overwhelmed with the generous response to my appeal for financial assistance to St. Jo-

seph Parish in meeting its cash-flow issues. This past week St. Joseph Parish received commit-

ments $10,500 from some generous parishioners and another commitment of $5,000 from the

St. Joseph Parish Bingo profits. Thank you all for your support.

1 To all the high school graduates of St. Joseph and St. Paul Parishes, I wish congratulations and

best wishes for the future. God bless the Class of 2018! 5th Sunday of Easter

The Messenger

The Messenger is hoping to do a story related to the Memo-rial Day holiday. If you have a “heart-warming” story to tell about someone you knew or a relative who died during a war, please let them know. Send any information to Chris Orlet at [email protected] The Messenger also prints the names of service members who were killed in action (WWII onward). If you would like to add a name, please send that person's name, rank if it is known, and the war in which they served and died. Also, you may send names of service people who are presently serving in harm's way, asking for prayers for their safe return home. If your loved one served in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria and have returned home, they would be happy to list their names among those who receive their prayerful support. Please submit the information to The Messenger by May 4.
