The Epistle: I Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20 Brethren, the body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is out-side the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 40 [Expectans expectavi] Chant, Sir Joseph Barnby (1836-1896)

I waited | patiently for the | Lord, and he inclined unto | me, and | heard my | calling.

And he hath put a new | song in my | mouth, even a | thanksgiving | unto our | God.

Sacrifice and | offering thou | wouldest not,

but mine | ears | hast thou | opened.

Burnt-offering and sacrifice for sin hast thou | not re-|quired: then | said I, | Lo, I | come;

In the volume of the book it is written of me, that I should fulfil thy will, | O my | God: I am content to do it; yea, thy | law is with-|in my | heart.

I have declared thy righteousness in the great | congre-|gation: lo, I will not refrain my lips, O | Lord, and | that thou | knowest.

Alleluia Laudate Deum, omnes angeli Psalm 148:2 Alleluia. Alleluia.

Praise the Lord, all ye Angels of his: Praise him all his host. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel: St. John 1:35-42 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord. At that time, John was standing with two of his disciples; and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

An Act of Spiritual Communion for those who cannot now receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace thee as if thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to thee. Never permit me to be separated from thee. Amen.

The Last Gospel: St. John 1:1-14 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. + The Beginning of the Holy Gospel according to Saint John. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [Genuflect] And the Word was made flesh, [Rise] and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. R. Thanks be to God.
