BOYS FOOTBALL

The boy’s football teams have played all their league games and look forward to competing in the Oldham Schools’ Cup competition after the Christmas break. Year 9’s are the only Newman team remaining in the Manchester Schools Catholic competition so we wish them the very best of luck. The Year 7 Boys football team have made a great start producing many outstanding performances, making Mr Cotter a very proud coach! The boys have all shown excellent commitment to training and hard work throughout training and games. Their teamwork and determination has ensured they remain unbeaten in the Oldham league and await confirmation of their second round Oldham cup match in the New Year. Year 8 led by captain Harry Dearden, have had a challenging year in all 4 competitions. The boys’ commitment to training has been fantastic with many turning up in all weather conditions. However narrow defeats in the closely fought Oldham ‘A’ league and early exits from the Catholic and Oldham Cup has meant that they must now wait until the Oldham Schools Tournament for their next fixture. The Year 9 football team, led by their Captain Liam Lovell, started the year with a few narrow defeats, but have finished strongly with 2 wins against Bluecoat and Royton and Crompton. It has been pleasing to see many new faces at weekly training sessions, many of whom have played their way into first team selection. Managers Mr Milne and Mr Kaffo have worked hard with the team and have been impressed by the boys’ commitment and the encouragement they give to each other during matches. They await news of their Oldham Schools cup opposition and are the only Newman team left in the Manchester Catholic Schools competition. The Year 10 team managed to achieve promotion last year by successfully winning numerous matches, however the transition into the A league has been a bit of a rollercoaster but the willingness and determination of the team cannot be faulted throughout every fixture. There have been a number of standout performers this year with Matthew Hammond and Dylan Holt deserving a particular mention with their commitment, a highlight to their performances. They have been very well led this year by their fantastic captain, Abdul Hennan. The year 11 team this year, captained by Patrick Scott, are still unbeaten in the league. Patrick is doing a fantastic job in running and organising the team. A particular highlight of the season was the comfortable victory at home to Hathershaw in which we had numerous scorers with Callum Mitchell scoring his first goal for Newman College. The Year 11 team has been an absolute pleasure to manage this year and the team look forward to a successful remaining few matches.

OLDHAM CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The annual Oldham Schools Cross Country Championships took place at Chadderton Hall Park. As usual, the conditions were very wet and muddy but this didn’t prevent Newman pupils from giving 100% and producing some outstanding individual and team performances. The two outstanding performances of the day came from Year 7’s Sophie Smith and Boris Amin who became Newman’s first ever Cross Country Champions!! Both pupils dominated their races with Sophie finishing well ahead of a top class field of girls from every secondary school in Oldham. Sophie and Boris will now represent Oldham at the Greater Manchester Championships on Saturday 6th February. Newman pupils who also performed very well and will represent Oldham in February are Year 7 - Olivia Copple, Year 8 - Tom Graham and Ben Rydel, Year 10 Ethan Glasgow. Fantastic team performances meant that the Year 7 & 8 boys were the best placed years finishing a very creditable 3rd and 2nd respectively.

BOYS RUGBY

Rugby League this year has been fantastic. The numbers have almost doubled since the start of last year. Teams have emerged in years 7, 8 and 9 with all pupils competing in inter school competition throughout the year. Both the year 7 and 9 team won the 9 aside tournament which was a great achievement, while the year 8 team came a close second to Saddleworth School. All pupils have shown great commitment, attending training on a regular basis. This has allowed them to build on their knowledge and skill level. Training is on Mondays after school, all new players are welcome.
