COMIC POSTCARDS Get to the Bottom of a Controversial Subject

By Jim Ward

Janice Prang was the biggest girl in our First Grade Class. She even towered over some of the boys. Janice lived in the same block as the George Ross Elementary School. She seldom was on time and Miss Cooper had warned her (holding a yardstick so everyone could see it) that she would take “measure” if Janice was late again. She was. And Miss Cooper did. The details have been lost since the incident happened way back in 1939, but we kids held onto our desks with white-knuckled hands, waiting to see. For the rest of the term the broken yardstick lay on Miss Cooper’s desk. Janice was never late again.

The dictionary defines “spanking” as being administered with either the open hand or an implement such as a paddle. At Reynolds Jr. High School in 1941, an infamous paddle passed among the male teachers. It had ¾” holes in it. It swung easier and left a smarter sting and was always used on a covered rump. In homes, in that era, the bare hand or a razor strap were not unheard of in Lancaster. Canes were typical in other parts of the world and still are, though the area has been much reduced in the last generation. Corporal punishment today is outlawed in 128 countries, though remains in sections of Africa , Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Southern and Western United States.

In 1783, Poland was the first country in the world to prohibit corporal punishment. CP is random in Egypt. In Germany it is a criminal offense. It is common in most of India, Japan (especially in school sports clubs), and Malaysia. In Burma (Myanmar) caning is common – on the buttocks, calves or palms of hands. In Singapore it’s for male students only and with a “light” rattan cane administered in formal ceremony by the school management. In the United Arab Emirates a teacher using CP will lose his job and teaching license and face criminal charges. Our postcards are of 100 years ago – before the Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children was instituted. We wonder if Janice’s children are ever late for school.
