Volume 1, Issue 3
At Union street lanes in Holbrook, MA this past
weekend, Jeff Surette became the second Pro

Jeff posted a 436, which was good for top spot heading into the later
shift. That shift, however, saw Stu Bergman rolling
an incredible 475 (a new personal high for Stu),
and taking over the top spot. After both
qualifying shifts, Surette was still among the leaders, sitting in second
place and earning a top seed in the first round of
ladder matches.

The top twenty-four point leaders at the end of the year will qualify for the Playoffs held at Pilgrim Lanes in Haverhill, MA.
After having been away
from the game of Candlepin bowling for most of his 20’s and 30’s,
John “Urbie” Kafalas moved back to the New
England area a few years ago and was rejuvenated
in the sport. As a youth, Urbie competed in
several State and International tournaments, finished
among the leaders a few

times, and also appeared
on Channel 7.
After college, he spent most of his spare time
playing jazz, blues, classical, and many other
varieties of music on the trombone. Playing the
trombone, and living in Chicago and Arizona,
was mostly why he didn’t bowl much as an adult.
Urbie recently
received a degree in accounting from Northern Arizona
University, and is pursuing a career as an
accountant. When he’s not bowling or spending
time with his wife Meg, he’s also a golfer, and a
motorcyclist (he rides a 1972 BMW).
Aside from being a top
professional candlepin bowler, Stu has his black
belt degrees in Tae Kwon Do and has been
studying the martial arts for almost 22 years. Initially, he got into Tae
Kwon Do as a way of keeping fit, and eventually
he developed his skills over time and is now very
talented in the art. Don’t let his black belt fool you,
however, he is still a

fun-loving guy.
Stu is one of those “as
seen on TV” bowlers, making an appearance on
three different shows. He made Channel Five singles five times, WNDS’s Stars
and Strikes 7 times for singles, skins, and also
qualified for the Tournament of Champions.
On the Candlepin Challenge he has over 15 appearances.
Stu has two Pro Tour wins, one of which he bowled his
personal high of 1365. His
high single is 191, high triple is 475, and his high five is
732.
Stu, a graduate of
Boston College, is an accountant and a bartender.
He has three kids: Kristina, Allison, and Josh. Being
around the game of bowling for so many years , Stu is well known, and well
respected.
If there has been a
tournament in the past ten years, chances are
John Zappi was in the running, or won it. John started bowling at nine years old at Lucky Strike Lanes in Dorchester, and is
now a household name in Candlepin bowling. He has
made nearly fifty appearances on T.V.
between WNDS’s Stars and Strikes, Candlepins for
Dollars, and the Candlepin Challenge, and has amassed
Meet a Bowler – John Zappi a record of 31-18.
Zappi has three Massachusetts State titles,
two of which are team titles, and one is an All
Events title. Since 2003, his team has won the Friday Night Pro League regular
season once, and the playoffs twice. Last year in
Bangor, ME, his team won the Men’s World Team
Tournament (a tournament that hosts 24 teams
consisting of the best bowlers from the United
States and Canada). This
past Easter, John won the twenty string Easter Classic
held at Leda Lanes in Nashua, NH. When he
bowled on the Pro Tour, he won six titles, was the Rookie of the Year in 2002,
and the Bowler of the Year in 2007.
John’s high single is 186, his high three is 485, high
five is 750, high ten is 1441.

Our next tournament is a Doubles Knock-Out to be held on October 17, 2009.
In this tournament, members (and non-members alike), will pair up to compete in a knock-out style format. Members who are participating in this tournament
are not required to bowl with other members. Doubles can consist of two members, one member and one non-member, or two non-members.
The format is similar to the Singles Knock-Out, with the only difference being
24 teams will qualify for the knock-out round, and the top eight seeds will receive a bye into the second round.
The tournament at Metro will be a family affair of sorts, in which we have three father and son doubles teams, and one team of brothers. Steve Renaud Jr.
will team up with his father Steve Sr., Eric Pelletier will partner up with his father Norm, DJ Richmond will bowl with his father Don, and Mike Legendre
will join forces with his brother Steve.

With two events in the books, Glennis McKinley sits amongst the points leaders, and has qualified for both the knock-out round, and the ladder round. She is the
only woman bowler on the Pro Series, but she’s proven she can compete. She, and many other top women bowlers, have competed, and continue to compete
successfully with the men. In a Singles Knock-Out tournament held last year at All Saints in Haverhill, MA, Glennis qualified for the knock-out round and proceeded to defeat current Pro Series Champion Jeff Surette, and last month’s Pro Series
Champion Danny Allard.
In the first two tournaments she qualified for the knock-out round at Cape
Ann Lanes and for the ladder round at Union Street Lanes. Presently, she is nineteenth in points with 138, and she trails tenth place by only 131. Next month
she looks to continue her streak of making the cut at Metro Bowl in Peabody, MA, where she will be bowling the Doubles Knock-Out with Tim Goodwin.
