Sparktacular 2017 is a inter-institution competition for Vietnamese students. The organisers wish to encourage all Vietnamese students from each school in Singapore to participate, show their talents and pursue their passion. The gala night was held on 25 Febuary 2017, featuring famous singer Bang Kieu, dancer Lam Vinh Hai, and Miss World 2015 Lan Khue, and 7 final contestants.

Kaplan students, Pham Quang Minh

(Bruce) and Nguyen Thi Hoa (Ari), formed BeMe and competed with other 6 finalists from other schools. BeMe won over the crowd, judges and ultimately, the championship with their emotional and passionate self-composed song about their mothers.

Kaplan student, Lam Luong Bang (David) also won the “Favourite Performance of the Night” title with his warm voice.

Congratulations VNCK for this proud moment!

On 11th February 2017, PELIKAN (Indonesian Community Club at Kaplan Singapore) held their first external event independently after organising the Indonesian Inter-school OlymPPIC for two consecutive years. The event was named “Grahita – The Amazing Race”. Grahita comes from a Sanskrit word which means emotions and that is what PELIKAN wishes to communicate to everyone as Valentine’s Day was, at that point in time, around the corner. With a total of 85 participants, the event was remarkably successful with participants, committee and volunteers being joyful. The weather seemed to agree as well, as the day

was bright and fine, perfect for the event. As this was PELIKAN’s first prominent external event, many Indonesian students from different universities in Singapore were interested and registered for the event. They came from NTU, NAFA, LASALLE College of Arts, Republic Polytechnic, Raffles Design Institute, SIM, PSB Academy, MDIS and ERC. All rushed to secure their registration for Grahita as limited slots were available. The rules for “The Amazing Race” requires the teams of 5 to race against time to complete four missions; Harpa (How much does it costs), Cana (Find the name), Teto (Selfie with a

specific person) and Motta (Eating an Oreo without using hands). After each completed mission, they were given two clues; one for the next mission and another for a missing puzzle that will reveal their group name. The names are associated with Indonesian famous characters like famous folklore characters.

Before the games ended, a special mission was revealed to all participants. They were required to locate a secret member who has been in the midst of the other teams.

Congratulations to Team Roro Jonggrang who finished the missions within the shortest period of time and to Team Dewi Galuh Chandra Kirana who is the winning team for

the special mission; Grahita: The Secret Game.

The day was tiring but everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously. We would like to thank all participants for coming to our biggest event yet. We would also like to thank everyone who has supported PELIKAN and its graduating committee for the past year.

Please continue to support the new committee members and their events! Thank you!

Served with Love is a project organized by Circle with Friends. The youth volunteers were given a rare opportunity to cook great tasting Northern Indian cuisine with the guidance from professional chefs for the elderly and needy families from Allspice Institute. At the end of the day, the youths got a chance to not only cook but to also spend time with the beneficiaries. It was indeed a great learning and fruitful experience.

It was loaded month of February – some of us have had to take exams. For us, KPSC, we have always done a nice and easy job for ourselves and most beneficial to our members. Therefore, KPSC hosted the body language session with the intention of getting all the members to not only use the correct hand gesture but also learn to be more expressive towards their feelings and what they are thinking. We have an amazing family here as our members, club representatives together with our club advisor bonded during the session and we all had fun learning how to be more expressive throughout many situations in lives with our practice with different situation namely Miss/

Mister Universe, Job Interview, and Blind Dating. Throughout the session, the members learnt to be more confident and more expressive than in other former sessions as well as our staff learning to do new things such as blending to our members and having fun together and many more like never before. We will keep our promise as to always be one of the platform to help you speak better in any situations. Moreover, we look forward to welcoming new members like you. Join the family now!

We are starting a Toastmasters club and we have invited a really great speaker who will be coming down on the 18th May! Do stay tuned!

Work is exhausting and draining. It is never easy to keep your energy

constantly high because we get worn out. The last thing that you want to do is to drag your feet to work because you feel a sense of dread. Well, maybe it is not the job that that is bringing you down. Perhaps, you need a different routine to work more effectively. One way is to stay positive which might help you to spring out of bed every morning with a smile knowing that it is going to be a wonderful day at work.

1 Start your day by saying ‘Hello or Hi’ to everyone. It is one of the best ways to

start your day by acknowledging the people around you, especially in your workplace. When you greet your colleagues, it means that you are aware of their presence and enables you to build an optimistic working relationship.

2Keep on learning. You might be one of the most senior employees in

the organisation, having served the organization for more than twenty years. The fresh graduate who joined the company a month ago might have eaten less rice than the salt you ate his entire life. However, there are plenty of things that you can learn from him. IT skills or the latest smartphone applications could be some knowledge that you can glean from the tech-savvy youngster or maybe a different style of work system that he had learned in school which might work for you.

3 Share your expertise.Offer to teach your colleagues skills that they might lack of,

especially to junior staff who had just joined the company. Not only are you helping them to adapt to the working style in the office, you will also feel good knowing that you are helping to make the working

environment a conducive one for everyone.

4 Take in-between quick breaks.Although the organisation

expects you to be working dutifully during your commitment hours, trying to do so might make you get worn out and each subsequent task you do will get sloppier as you lose focus and motivation. Take a short five-minute or ten-minute break every hour or two to stretch yourself or walk around for fresh air. By doing so, you will be refreshed. By the time you are done, you will be ready to take on the next task.

5 Work stays at work. It is important to manage your time, not only at work,

but also with your personal time. If you are unable to finish your work during your working hours, try to finish it as soon as you step into the office the next morning. Learn to prioritise tasks which are important and it will help to lessen work stress. Imagine having to work for eight hours, then having to continue doing so for a few more hours at home. When you have completed your task, you know that you will need to go through the same cycle the next day. You will not feel excited to go back to work. It is hard not to think about work as it is a big portion of your life, but give it a try. Your life is more than just work itself.
