THE CALVARY SPIRIT “Sharing God’s Love in Worship, Fellowship and In Service to our Neighbors.” August 2018

NOTES FROM PASTOR LINDACreator God, remind us afresh that we are all related through you. You created each of us in your very own image. You call each of us beloved. Through you, we are dependent upon each other, we are dependent upon all of creation. Always, we are dependent upon you. As we remember and reflect upon our inter-relatedness, help us love each other in a deeper way, help us to care for those we meet in a gentler fashion, help us to walk beside each other in a manner which is kind and caring. Creator God, remind us afresh this day that what we do, what we say, how we act, how we respond matters. It matters to those we meet on this journey. It matters to you. Creator God, guide us and love us afresh. Amen.

Dear Friends,

As I pondered the deep divisions within our country, within families, within faith communities, and throughout the world, I wrote this prayer. I believe God calls us to come together rather than to move farther and farther away from each other. We hear in Scripture that God created us, each of us, in God’s very own image. For me, this means that every time we look into the eyes of a neighbor, into the eyes of a colleague, into the eyes of a family member, of a friend, into the eyes of someone who may rub us the wrong way, we look into the eyes of our Creator God. If we believe this and if we remember this, might we be kinder in our day to day interactions? Might we speak in ways which radiate love rather than hostility? Might we pause more often to listen to the stories and the dreams of those we meet rather than merely trying to express our own views? If we believe this and if we remember this, might we find new ways to sit together, to allow the Spirit to move in our midst, to engage in conversations which can help to heal the wounds which prevent us from loving one another the way God commands?

Each morning when we arise, we are given a gift. It is the precious and glorious gift of a new day to live. For the most part, we get to choose whether we will embrace life, whether we will choose joy, whether we will engage in meaningful ways to live with our sisters and brothers. This can happen when we are at work. This can happen when we are at play. This can happen when we are running errands. This can happen when we gather for Worship. This can happen in so many different ways throughout our lives. For the most part we get to choose how we will live. We get to choose whether we will smile or frown, whether we will say hi or walk on by, whether we will be present with others or withdraw and isolate ourselves. Life is a gift—a very precious gift. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. We all know this. I wonder how you will spread seeds of joy and love, of hope and peace this day. I wonder how you will respond to the gift of a new day

which God has given to you. I wonder if you will choose to pay attention, to live out of deep love, to joyfully embrace your journey, to delight in the richness of God’s wondrous creation. I wonder how you will walk with God this day and in all the days you receive.

I want to share with you a story. A few weeks ago as I was travelling to an appointment, the driver of the vehicle in front of me flashed his four ways lights. He slowed down and then came to a complete stop. I admit I was initially annoyed. I admit I wondered what he was doing. Then, he opened his door and began to get out of his vehicle. Still I wondered what he was doing. I watched somewhat impatiently. Then I saw this man bend down to pick up a turtle which moving slowly, as turtles do, in the middle of the road. This kind man carried that turtle to a safe grassy space by the side of the road. I smiled. I gave this gentleman a thumbs up. And, I realized that I may not have noticed that turtle until it was too late. Friends, this scenario reminds me to pay attention to the beauty of life which is all around us. This story also reminds me to slow down.

Sisters and brothers, I invite you to pay attention to where God is leading you this very day and in all the days to come. Slow down so you can hear God’s whispers. Pause so you can notice the absolute beauty of God’s creation. Live each and every day leaving a trail of love in your wake. Remember each day is a precious gift from God.

Peace, love, and blessings,Pastor Linda

Narrative LectionaryFor many years, Calvary has utilized the Revised Common Lectionary, which is a three-year cycle of

Scripture readings offering four weekly lessons. In most cases there is an Old Testament reading, a Psalm, a reading from the Epistles (letters), and a Gospel lesson. Generally at Calvary we utilize three of the four readings weekly with our sermon focused on one or two of these lessons.

Beginning in September, we are going to make a shift from the Revised Common Lectionary to the Narrative Lectionary. You will notice there will be one Scripture reading or focus text each week. The Narrative Lectionary offers a four year cycle which begins in September with a story about creation and then touches on the major stories, characters, and plot points in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) through mid-December. At that point the lectionary shifts to one of the four Gospels and moves through many of the main stories or passages of that Gospel. Shortly after Easter, there is a move to readings from Acts and the Epistles. The Narrative Lectionary offers nine months of readings which allows the summer months to focus on other books of our choice which often remain unexplored and yet hold rich, deep stories of our ancestors.

As we utilize the Narrative Lectionary, I welcome your feedback and thoughts. My understanding is this shift can lead us deeper into the Scripture stories and allow us to explore spaces we may have previously missed. Together, may we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us as we listen, as we hear, as we learn, as we go deeper in our faith.

Peace, love, and blessings,Pastor Linda

Pastor Linda’s Office HoursPastor Linda’s office hours will be Mondays 3:00-4:30 pm and Wednesdays 3-6 pm. Tuesdays will

remain as visitation day. Other times available by appointment.

Memorial Gift – Gazebo

The Calvary Spirit 2

The Property Commission and the Consistory of Calvary UCC have been working with long-time member and sister in Christ, Anita Schwenk, to have a Gazebo placed on the church property in loving memory of her husband, Kirt Schwenk. It is our hope that this Memorial Gazebo will be placed in the midst of the loop at the end of Calvary’s walking trail. The Gazebo will offer a space to rest, a place to pause, an area to sit with God. Perhaps it will also be used as a wedding site sometime in the future. It is our hope that this Memorial Gazebo will be installed and blessed by the end of the summer. All monies for the Gazebo and its installation are being drawn from memorial gifts bestowed to Calvary UCC. If you have questions, please see any member of our Consistory.

Pet Blessing ServiceOver the past several years, Calvary has held an outdoor Worship Service the Sunday of Labor Day

weekend which included our annual Blessing of the Pets. This year we are initiating a change. Rather than holding Worship outside with the pet blessing on Sunday, September 2nd, we will Worship in the Sanctuary at 9:15 am that morning. Our annual Blessing of the Pets will be held on Sunday, September 23 rd at 2 pm. We desire to open this time of blessing pets to the surrounding community and also to invite our neighbors to enjoy our walking path with their pets. As in the past, we will hold a collection for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County and offer treats available for the animals who are present. We hope this shift will allow for the blessing of many more dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, birds, and whatever other pets God brings to our time of gathering. Please share the date and time of this pet blessing with your family, your friends, your neighbors, your colleagues so we can bless God’s beloved creatures.

Church PicnicThe Consistory of Calvary UCC is hosting a potluck Church picnic on Sunday, September 16 th at 4

pm. This will be a time to gather under our pavilion and get to know one another a bit better. Please come and bring your favorite dish to share. Consider bringing your favorite game. And bring a friend, a neighbor, a family member who may want to know more about our Faith Community. A sign-up sheet is posted on the Fellowship Board. Beverages will be provided. We hope to see you as we gather, as we share our stories, as we spend some time together over a meal.

August VacationPastor Linda will be on vacation from Thursday, August 9th through and including Wednesday,

August 15th. Rev. Jane Kropa of Huff’s Union Church will serve as Calvary’s emergency contact during this period. You can contact Rev. Kropa at 610-845-2626. Our Supply Pastor for Worship on Sunday, August 12th will be Rev. Elmer Reinhold.

Relay for LifeFor the past four years Calvary has supported our Relay for Life team, Calvary United Cancer

Crusaders. Denise and Chris Mathias have served as our Relay Chairs for the past two years. Since Denise and Chris have relocated to the Pittsburgh area, we are seeking new chairs for our Relay for Life team. If you have questions or are interested in serving, please see Pastor Linda.

Camp NoahCalvary UCC’s Consistory approved the sending of $100 from our Mission Funds to Camp Noah.

Rally Day Worship…Since our Soup Supper will be held on Saturday, 9/8, there will not be Faith Formation classes on Rally Day, Sunday, 9/9. During Worship at 10:15 am we will celebrate Rally Day with a special music presentation. Watch for further details in our weekly announcements.

Blessing of BackpacksOn Sunday, 8/19, we invite children, youth, teachers, and anyone who is returning to the classroom

to bring their backpacks to Worship for a time of blessings. We trust that God is with us every single moment of every single day. This blessing reminds students and teachers and all who go to school that they are never, ever alone.

Potato ProjectFor the past four years, we have helped harvest potatoes and carrots for the local Potato Project to

feed those in our local communities who hunger. Covenant Association has scheduled a date for our churches to come together and harvest on Saturday September 15th from 9 am until 1 pm. Let’s join others from our association for a day of helping to feed our sisters and brothers. Details on the location will be forthcoming over the next month. If you have any questions about the Potato Project, please see Pastor Linda.

GETTING TO KNOW RENE & FRED LAQUINTA

Rene…wife, mother, retired school teacher

Rene is blessed with a wonderful husband of 45 years and two devoted, loving, truly hard working daughters. In December, Rene and Fred moved to Barto to be closer to their daughter, Diana, who owns a farm in Huffs Church and works for the St. Lukes University Health Network. Her younger daughter, Christa, is also in the healthcare profession and works at Children’s Hospital in Washington, DC. In addition to her pediatric nursing career, she owns a massage business.

Prior to retirement, Rene had a very fulfilling career as a school teacher. She taught in Allentown, Houston, Chester County, Delaware County and three districts in South Jersey. Her school children were preschoolers, sixth graders, and every age in between.

The beach and reading (especially on the beach) are Rene’s hobbies, which, according to her girls, are not genuine hobbies—perhaps she will find a “real” hobby.

Until the last few years, Rene and Fred have been very active Catholics. A series of events and awakenings pulled Rene in the direction of an unfamiliar, challenging faith journey. For two years prior to moving to their present home, Rene and Fred were members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Downingtown, Pa. Upon moving to Barto, Rene continued her search for an embracing congregation which lives out and spreads Christ’s message of love. Rene feels it is truly an honor to be welcomed into Calvary United Church of Christ.

Fred…

The Calvary Spirit 4

Fred grew up in Pittsburgh. He and his wife, Rene, met while in college and married a week after they graduated. Following his military commitment, they moved to Lower Macungie where Fred worked for Air Products. During his 40 years in Human Resources, he worked for Exxon in Houston, Hercules in Wilmington, DE, and the Atlantic City Medical Center where he retired from in 2008. Currently, Fred runs a small consulting practice which provides coaching and team building services to hospitals across the country.

Fred became addicted to exercising on his basement rowing machine after watching his two daughters row in high school and college. To date, he has logged nearly 18,000,000 meters or 11,200 miles, just short of hallway around the globe.

Always a Pittsburgher at heart, things that might surprise you are that Fred has met and spoken to Joe DiMaggio and Muhammad Ali and caught a foul ball in the 1960 World Series between the Pirates and the Yankees. His second favorite sport, after football, is Cricket. His favorite team is India.

On Fred’s bucket list are to play in a Cricket match and row on the water with his daughters as boat mates!

GETTING TO KNOW KEVIN SHIELDS Kevin is my name. Donuts are my game. I’m the husband of Sandy Acker Shields, who is a

member of Calvary. Calvary has been Sandy’s home church since she was young and now it has come to feel like home to me. I’ve been coming to worship at Calvary for several years and have participated in a few church functions – Trunk or Treat and the Alton Acker Memorial Concerts.

I was born and raised in upstate New York. I attended Clarkson College where I received my degree in Chemical Engineering.

After taking a job in Reading, PA, I met Sandy. We relocated to Maryland, married and went on to raise three beautiful daughters – Kristin, Ashley and Jillian. Our family now includes 6 grandchildren. Sandy and I celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary this year.

In my 40 year career, I’ve been fortunate to visit most of the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Hungary, South Africa, Turkey, India, Australia, Malaysia, Japan and the Philippines. I’ve enjoyed the many cultural exchanges, but was always happy to get back home.

I am currently battling Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. I accept this and view it as a calling to God.

Isaiah 40:31 – but those that hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Welcome Rene, Fred and Kevin. We rejoice that your faith journey has led you to Calvary United Church of Christ.

Special Thank You Notes Sent to CalvaryDear Friends of Calvary - On behalf of Kevin and myself, I'd like to thank you all for your concern,

thoughts, prayers, cards, flowers, phone calls and visits.  It truly means the world during this trying time.  I must tell you that Kevin waits each day for the mailman, in hopes that another card will arrive.  It's the highlight of his day!  He's so proud to show off all his cards when we have visitors. He recently received a "Sunshine Box" from a gal named Sharon, from North Carolina that got word from a friend that Kevin has Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer and is going through chemotherapy.  Sharon sends boxes all the time to cancer

The Calvary Spirit 5

patients in her local hospital. Sharon decided to send Kevin a box with 20 gifts inside.  She said to open one gift on any day that he is feeling bad or down.  What a neat idea!!!  I really want to look into doing something like this in the future here in our local area. If it can light up a cancer patient's face for a little while and let them know they are not alone, then mission accomplished.Kevin hit a rough patch after his fifth round of chemo with many side effects and eventually landed in the hospital for a week.  The oncologist took him off all chemo to give his body a rest for several weeks and called physical therapy to come to the house.  I've been monitoring his diet to keep his electrolytes balanced the best I can, since chemotherapy can play havoc with them. His diving blood pressure upon standing and walking is a bit better, but may be a permanent side effect from the aggressive chemo. Today he began a new chemotherapy regimen. This time the drugs are not as aggressive and (we hope) easier to tolerate.  These treatments will go on for a couple months before another pet scan will be taken.  Kevin may at that time have to go back on the aggressive drugs, which right now he does not want to do because quality of life is so bad while taking them.  All we can do is take one day at a time and pray that God will guide us and the doctors to make the right decisions, that Kevin will not suffer nor be in pain, and that he can enjoy more family/friend time.

We send best wishes and blessings to all at Calvary.Kevin and Sandy Shields

Spotlight on Howard and Barbara Moser

During a recent visit in their home at Frederick Living, Barbara and Howard shared part of their life journey with Pastor Linda

The Mosers have been married 61 years. They have four adult children, Glenn, Lori, Steven, and Angela, as well as two daughters-in law, Brenda and Lori, and two sons-in-law, John and Greg. They also have 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Family matters to Barbara and Howard.

Howard was a dairy farmer for 35 years in the Niantic area. He took over his father’s farm and Barbara worked alongside him. After 35 years, they sold their cows due to Howard’s arthritis. At that time Howard went to work at Agway in Bechtelsville and Barbara worked for Bally Ribbon.

When asked about favorite hymns, they lifted up How Great Thou Art, God Sent His Son, They Called Him Jesus, and I Come, I Come (Billy Graham’s theme song). Barbara mentioned she loves that hymns tell us a story. As we sing we are pointed to Scripture. Both Barbara and Howard look to Psalm 23, with its words of hope and comfort, as their favorite Scripture passage.

Barbara and Howard have been members of Calvary UCC for 35 years. Barbara frequently helped with pie baking as a dough roller. Both regularly attended Worship on Sundays. They miss being present at Calvary where they know everyone. They also shared that the people who gather for Worship are friendly, simple folks who love others just as they are.

When asked what matters most in life, Barbara responded knowing that her children are happy and following the Lord. Howard lifted up the health of his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.

Though they both experience health struggles themselves, Howard and Barbara feel they are lucky and they are blessed. They are also grateful for the continued prayers from their faith community.

When asked for their secret to being married for 61 years. They shared that you give and you take, you work together, your work beside one another, and you love each other.

The Calvary Spirit 12

Barbara’s words of wisdom for her faith community are: give of yourself, believe God’s word, and realize that you need faith. Howard shared this wisdom as a farmer: you have to have faith, all of your life is dependent upon God.

Barbara and Howard’s wedding anniversary is November 10th. Barbara’s birthday is July 10th and Howard’s birthday is December 17th. Let’s stay in touch with our sister and brother in Christ, through cards and notes. The Mosers’ address is: 116 Oaktree Court, Box 548, Frederick, PA 19435.
