NAPLAN 2021

The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN will continue to be administered online in 2021 for Years 3 and Year 5 students. NAPLAN tests are intended to complement the existing range of school-based assessments and provide useful point-in-time information in relation to student performance. The NAPLAN online test window starts on 11 May 2021 and finishes on 21 May 2021. All tests will be administered online with the exception of Year 3 Writing which will be a pencil and paper test.

In preparation, the students will participate in the online practice tests so that they are familiar with the technology and the types of question formats and teachers participate in training sessions to foster consistency in test administration.

Use this link to find out further information and to learn how to support your child through NAPLAN. We do not want students feeling anxious and want to encourage them to do the best they can on the day. EASTER HAT PARADE We are so excited that our annual Easter Hat Parade will go ahead this year on Thursday 1st April from 9.15am. Separate communication is being emailed out to parents of K -2 students regarding this event. As we continue to conform with limitations imposed in relation to the COVID Pandemic, please note:

• only one person per K - 2 child can attend the event • parents who do not have children in K - 2 will not be able to attend (unless working as a P

and C volunteer announcing raffle winners) • please follow the mandatory two part sign in process using the Service NSW COVID app

and signing in at the tables located outside the office, whereby you are agreeing to complying with COVID safe practices outlined on displayed posters

• all visitors are expected to adhere to social distancing of 1.5metres at all times • all attendees are to remain seated (with appropriate social distancing) in the COLA during

the event, unless getting up for an essential reason e.g. visiting the bathrooms • all attendees should depart the school immediately after the event • please do not gather in groups at entry or exit points or on the school site • please do not attend if you are suffering from any cold or flu-like symptoms, regardless of

how mild

A big thank you in advance. It’s because we have such supportive parents who understand and comply with the measures we must put in place, that we can hold these events.

PARKING A big thank you to all parents who park legally and courteously when dropping off and picking up children. We ask that all parents and carers park legally and not across driveways - to be thoughtful of others living near the school. Please see more parking guidelines below.

SCHOOOL EXCURSIONS AND CAMPS We wish our Year 6 students and teachers al the best as they head off to Canberra this week. We look forward to hearing about your adventures on your return. FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY If you are experiencing financial difficulty and cannot afford for your child to attend a school excursion or camp, please contact Clare in the office when notes are sent home, so that a possible payment plan and subsidy can be negotiated. PAUL KELLY CUP Last week students participated in the Paul Kelly Cup AFL Competition. Thank you to Ms Graham for organising this opportunity and thank you to Taylor S and Sophie D for this report.

Out of three games the girls lost one, tied one and won one. The boys lost one game and won two games. Neither team made it through to the finals but Sophie D. came third in a sprinting race and Joshua F came third. We did John Purchase proud.

During the Paul Kelly Cup AFL Gala Day, everyone had an awesome time and played to the best of their ability.

SAFE, RESPONSIBLE AND RESPECTFUL USE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. Our children and young people have grown up with digital technology and it is woven into their lives. During COVID -19 many young people are using digital technology more often to learn and to socialise. Supporting children and young people to use technology in a safe, respectful and responsible manner allows for more active online learning that can increase student engagement and participation. It also supports access to a broader range of content and learning resources that can supplement students’ learning experiences. Being safe online is a shared responsibility for students, teachers, parents, carers and the broader community. It is important that families can communicate with their children about the how to use digital technology in safe, responsible and respectful ways. Here are some key reminders for children and young people of how to stay safe online:

• Protect personal information, including name, address, school, email address, telephone number, pictures and other personal details.

• Never share user names or passwords and only use your own • Ask a teacher or other responsible adult for help if anyone online asks for personal

information, wants to meet or offers money or gifts. • Let a teacher or other responsible adult know immediately if anything online that is

suspicious, harmful or inappropriate. • Never hack, disable or bypass any hardware or software security, including any virus

protection, spam and filter Further information can be found at:

• Digital Citizenship website: https://www.digitalcitizenship.nsw.edu.au/ • Esafety Commissioner: https://www.esafety.gov.au/

The department’s Student use of digital devices and online service policy supports schools to maximise the benefits and minimise the risks of digital environments, and prepare students for life beyond school.

THAT’S LEADERSHIP THINKING!

Thinking like a leader comes before action. Creating leadership mindsets in children and young people lays a solid foundation for their future growth. The Parenting Ideas article below offers some guidelines for creating leadership skills in children. Leonie Black Principal

Silver and Gold Award Winners Congratulations to our Silver and Gold Award recipients, who were acknowledged at last week’s assembly.

Parent Interviews with Class Teachers During the last week of this term, commencing Monday 29th March, each classroom teacher has set aside special times to meet with parents at school. The current Covid guidelines allow us to do this. We highly value opportunities to discuss every child’s learning parents. Teachers will have student work samples in to share. At JPPS, we use an online process to organise our parent interview appointment bookings. Each classroom teacher has edited the site to show their availability in Week 10. You are cordially invited to book one, fifteen minute interview session per child. To make an appointment, please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the event code: bec2n Parents will need to enter their own name, email address, phone number and child’s name, before nominating the correct teacher and class. Please only select one timeslot per child. This process should be repeated, for each sibling at our school. To assist this process, please refer to teachers and classes below.

Term 1 Week 8 15 March 2021

All parent interviews will be held in the school hall, before, during or after school. Prior to each interview, parents will be required to complete the Covid check in process outside the hall, so please allow extra time for this. As advised previously, please do not attend the interviews, if you have any cold or f lu-like symptoms. If this is the case, please phone the school office to advise cancellation of your appointment and request a new time in Term 2. The school interview site is now OPEN FOR BOOKINGS. Purchase Pride Badge (10 Purchase Prides)

When students receive ten Purchase Pride awards (pictured above), these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class. Purchase Pride cards have a tear off strip. This strip may be removed by the recipient and placed in the appropriate stage box outside Mrs King’s office, to go in the lucky dip draw for a canteen voucher. Following changes to the Covid guidelines, students will now be presented with their Purchase Pride badge at 8:55am on a Monday morning, usually the week after their name is published in the school newsletter. Congratulations to the following Purchase Pride recipients: Armaan D (2S), Mia Z (1M), Prethyun P (2S), Aaryan (3N), Ethan (2S), Kalvin (3S), Joanna L (4F), Kevin G (2C), Sofia LG (2C), Daisy L (2T), Shreya (2S), James H (2S), Nihal N (1P), Anya T (3P), Kyros (3P), Liam F x2 (2C), Kiran J (1N), Nicholas (1P), Hannah F (4M), Lily S (6G)

What do I do with my Class Awards?

When a student has received ten green/white class awards (pictured above), they should be handed in to Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached:

10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion 50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day! A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! With the exception of Bronze Awards (which are published at the end of the term and presented at a Principal’s morning tea for students and parents), all awards received by Thursday afternoon, are ‘stamped’ and published in the next school newsletter, which is usually on the following Monday. At this time, I indicate when these awards will be presented at the next Thursday afternoon assembly. Students need to be responsible for their own awards, as replacements are not issued. BRONZE AWARD (10 Class Awards)

These awards will be presented at the Principal’s Morning Tea on Tuesday 30th March. (The April date previously published, is incorrect). Invitations for parents and students to attend, will be distributed to students this week. Names of all Bronze Award recipients will be published next week.

Mrs Adela King Deputy Principal Sports Report Swimming Carnival Ribbons The swimming carnival ribbons will be presented to students who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th on Monday 22nd March at the 9am morning assembly. Parents you are welcome to attend. Please note that ribbons are given to students based on their time in their event not on their individual heat. Miss McDonald Sports Coordinator NAPLAN 2021 The online NAPLAN dates for 2021 are Tuesday 11th May to Friday 21st of May. NAPLAN testing is online, except for the Year 3 writing test which will be on paper. Coordinated Practice Test All schools conducting online NAPLAN are to hold a practice test at the same time. This helps familiarise the students with the online platform and also test the system. The 2021 Practice test is on Thursday 25 March as close to 11.30am as the school schedule allows. If you have any questions in regards to NAPLAN please speak to Mr Johnson, Mrs Salazar or your child's classroom teacher. Mrs Salazar and Mr Johnson NAPLAN Coordinators
