FROM THE PASTOR 3

My dear brothers and Sisters, Someone once sent me a card that said, “while you are taking care of everybody make sure you’re taking care of yourself.” This is a struggle for most of us. What’s in your sack? the traveler, stooped from the heaviness, is asked. My Mother. Isn’t she heavy? She sure is. Why don’t you put her down? I can’t. Well, why can’t you stop carrying her? I don’t know. I’ve always carried her. I know this: I, too, carry a sack, and am reluctant to set it down.

In fairness to Mothers everywhere, I could have chosen my metaphor differently. But here’s the deal: what is In the sack is not the primary is-sue. What is true is this, we carry stuff that weighs us down—heavy enough to steal our spirit, and keeps us from being alive on the in-side. Our sacks can carry a whole lot of things… …the anxiety of the day, …resentment from past grievances, …woundedness from an unfair life, …unresolved regarding an “unpaid” debt, …fear of conflict, …a struggle with vexing personal issues, …a preoccupation with busyness, …our itch for perfection, …clinging to self-righteousness, Whatever it is, we are consumed and we find re-assurance in the weight. Whatever it is, every sin-gle sack prevents us from embracing life as a gift—the gift to be awake and aware.

I will ‘fess up. My sack takes care of something. To my detriment. It gives me a sense of identity. As if I need to shore up something. Or compen-sate. Or maybe, just the fear of being called self-ish if I set the sack down. Parker Palmer’s guid-ance deserves to be read twice. “By surviving passages of doubt and depression of the voca-tional journey, I have become clear about at least one thing: self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer oth-ers. Anytime we can listen to true self and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for our-selves but for the many others whose lives we touch.” -Terry Hershey

May you take the time this summer to take care of yourself so you may better care for those you love. Still giving care and trying to receive it, with love, Fr. Rich

TOGETHER IN MISSION We are very close to reaching our Together in Mission goal of $146,900. THANK YOU to all that have completed a pledge or gift to this important campaign to assist lo-cal parishes and schools that other-wise would not be able to keep their doors open or to provide very basic ministry and service in their communi-ties.

We are still short of reaching our

goal so if you are still considering a

gift or pledge, please do so now.

Together in Mission envelopes are

available in the church narthex, at

the parish office, or online at

www.holynameofmary.org.

SUMMER ENVELOPES We sincerely thank our parishioners

who mail or deliver your weekly en-

velopes to the parish office while

you are out-of-town on vacations this

summer. As many of you understand

our parish expenses and obligations

do not take a vacation when you do,

so it is very helpful to be able to re-

ly on your continued support even

when you cannot personally attend

Mass here.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION? Many of our parish families are planning to get away for some summer

fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray for that your

vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories.

However, please don’t take your parish offering with you. Each summer

our parish office struggles to juggle the bills as Sunday offerings

decrease significantly.

If you find that you tend to forget your envelope more often during the

less structured weeks of summer, please consider our electronic giving

program. Go to http://hnmparish.org It’s simple! It’s safe! And it keeps

God at the top of your giving list even when you are away!

PARISH REGISTRATION Often people attend Mass at this parish for several years, but never

register. Registering in the parish is a declaration of your desire to be

part of Holy Name of Mary community and to make a commitment to the

life of Holy Name of Mary Parish community. Being a registered

parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant

baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked

to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A regis-

tered parishioner receives parish mailings.

Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish

registration. Holy Name of Mary accepts anyone who wants to share in

the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register

at Holy Name of Mary Parish, you need to complete a registration form.

The parish office is open after Mass on Sunday morning or throughout

the week. Why not sign up today?

HNM MARRIAGE MINISTRY This past May, the Marriage Ministry of HNM had a dinner dance to celebrate the closing of another great series of meetings. The videos that were presented each month, entitled BELOVED, taught us the deeper meaning of “I do”. Thank you to the many couples who joined us in fun, friendship, and fellowship this year. You INSPIRE us. We have learned a lot from one another and find comfort in knowing we are not alone in our marital chal-lenges. We hope you enjoy your summer and take time to put into practice the many things you learned from the BELOVED series and each other. Stay tuned for upcoming Marriage Ministry announcements in the fall.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER August 11 - 13

Would you like to spend a weekend alone with your spouse, enrich your marriage and make your marriage relationship the most

beautiful treasure you can give to each other and your children. Your marriage encounter weekend is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Our next weekend is on August 11 thru 13.. With all the things in our life we give our time too, nothing is more important than the care we give to our marriages, and in turn to our children. Please call Bill and MaryAnn Vena today at (909)623-8444 or (909)821-5783 to register!

SHIELD The Men’s Shield Group, a place for men to find spiritu-al growth, friends, and value awareness, invites you to drop in any Tuesday evening, 7:15 pm, to room 205 in the Hall. The fellowship is great, the discussions lively – the friendship wonderful. All ages, never any cost or obligation – just come shake hands! Our discussions last quarter centered on the book The Beauty of the Catholic Faith, written by Shield member and parishioner, Jerry Stephens. This great guide to Catholicism for any level of reader is available from the author (909) 702-6694 or directly through Amazon.com. (not Kindle) Also call if you would like more info about the Shield group itself. The next three months will build around Matthew Kelly’s The Seven Pillars of Catholic Spirituality, (one copy available without charge online from Dynam-icCathoic.com), or we will also have free copies on hand. A great resource for anyone, but even better when we can explore it together. We’re currently arranging a visit to a Quakes baseball game, a family-based picnic, and hope to host another retreat this Fall for all men of the parish. We need you to help us grow – as men of faith, filled with Catholic values – or simply to join in a wonderful fellowship with your Holy Name parish members. Who have you been sitting next to at mass? Come find out!

CURSILLO DE Colores!! We are beginning our Cursillo School of Leaders here at Holy Name of Mary on the first Fridays of the month. We would love to see you there. Have you heard of Cursillo? Would you like to know more? We have a monthly meeting called Ultreya where you can find out. Ultreya is held every fourth (4th) Friday of the month. Please join us in the St. Frances Room (ff 201) in the Sacred Hearts Hall. We meet from 7:00 to

9:00pm. Hope to see you there.

SABIA USTED? A mi madre. ¿No está pesada? Sí, claro que sí. ¿Por qué no la bajas? No puedo. Bueno, ¿por qué no dejas de cargarla? No sé. Siempre la he cargado.

DID YOU KNOW? Creating boundaries for mobile phone Parents and caregivers may be more inclined during summertime to allow children to use mobile phones, especially when school is not in ses-sion. Consider the following tips to establish boundaries and help keep children safe when using a mobile phone: --Contact service provider to block internet access and calls from unapproved phone numbers. --Designate certain times that cell phone must be turned off (family meals, school hours, after 10 p.m.) --Insist that parental permission is required for the download of any and all apps. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article "What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone?" email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR FREEDOM

Freedom is enshrined in our US Constitution. The First Amendment of our constitution protects our freedom of speech. However, our speech may not infringe upon another's freedom. Freedom does have its limits. And we must protect everyone's freedoms, not just ours. On this 4th of July, let us remember from whom all our freedoms originate, our good and gracious God. Let us pray... God, giver of all good gifts, Help us to be thankful for rest and food, and remember that, in all we do or say, you are with us, here this day. We are thankful for all you do and for everything you have given us. But above all we are thankful for our freedoms and the ability to protect others' freedom. We are free because of you. We ask for your continued blessing on all your creation. Through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
