Lompoc Spring Festival of the Arts

Lompoc, Calif. A weeklong festival
held on Ryon Park, the Spring
Festival of the Arts sees the return of
carnival caravans operated by
Butler, as well as heightened traffic
along South O Street, loud music, andinteresting art; but thats
probably
the worst of it. The festival does
allow some interesting car and
motorcycle shows to take place,
including an enclosed motorcycle
built for chasing high-speed records
towed by a woody, and a score of
vintage Japanese motorcycles.

---------Teststrecke Porsche 3
Santa Maria, Calif. The third autocross event
hosted by the California Central Coast Region of
the Porsche Club of America, Teststrecke
Porsche 3 will be the first of 3 planned events at
the Santa Maria Airport track. This 1.2 mile
portion of the airport was paved by Porsche A.G.
in 2011 for the International Media Introduction
of the 2012 911 model (991). The Santa MariaAirport authority
has been kind enough to allow
the local car clubs to use it for autocross events.
The particular setup for the April 20th
event made full use of the paved track with no
chicanes to slow the vehicles down. This was a
track geared for high horsepower vehicles with
drivers who planned to go either as fast as they
dared or as fast as their cars would allow.
While entrants for Teststrecke 3 were
largely Porsche club members, the fastest times
were provided by the non-Porsche entries. Tom
Dobyns in a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 held off
the 2004 Volkswagen Golf R32 of Steve Kraft to
post almost a 1 second margin of victory. The
third fastest contestant would be Larry Butler in
a race-prepared 1972 Datsun 510 only 6-tenths
off Krafts pace.
Although the fastest entrants were 5
seconds faster than any other drivers, thats notto say that the
slower drivers werent having any
fun. The sole Miata in the event provided quite a
show on each of his morning laps with spin outs
and lurid, out of control drifts. Several other
cars, like the 1962 Chevrolet Corvette of John
Mahoney pirouetted at least once coming out of
the high speed sweepers.
It was a pleasant event and fairly well-
organized. Teststecke Porsche 4 and 5 later this
year are events that the local enthusiast should
be looking forward to. They are tentatively
scheduled for June 22 and September 21.
