The next stop on my Newfoundland adventure was La Scie - a French name for The Saw as the mountains around La Scie resemble a saws teeth

Used by the Basque fisherman La Scie was founded in about 1504 as part of the French Shore and approximately 1200 people call this lovely harbour town home in 1904 the French quit fishing here and the English settled the region

I stopped in at the Outport Museum amp Tea Room One of the first things about this home museum and catches your heart and imagination is the 16th century Basque fishing boat - Chaloupe Hendaia that rests out front

Itrsquos workmanship is amazing and makes you eager to go inside and see what else is on hand

I walked up the driveway and stepped into the early 1900rsquos

Inside I was greeted by owner Larry Whalen

This charming man took me through his family home that is crammed full of regional memoriabilia

He spoke with great pride of the building of the replica Basque fishing boat and the pride he felt sailing her

He told me the tale of the Irishman named Daniel Duggan who took care of the French fishers gear in the winter time

He explained that the French would head back to France to see their loved ones and get prepared for the next fishing season and the British would take advantage of their

absence and so Mr Duggan was hired Larry urged me to go to the cemetery which I would do later

Yes this place is filled with the rich history of La Scie and it is so worth your time and a few dollars to tour the museum

After the tour I sat down in the wonderful little bistro that is in the front of the museum Complete with a gorgeous outdoor eating area this small bistro offers up some

wonderful traditional fare and is run by Larryrsquos wife If I recall correctly her name is Valerie (I seemed to have misplaced my notes)

Anyway this lovely woman served me a delicious meal that was comprised of a few veggies a fish cake and a shell filled with Crab Au Gratin along with a dinner bun

It was far more filling than what it appeared to be

After the meal I was served up some pie which is made from a local berry - Partridge Berry

Her crust was light and the berries were not too sweet it was a delightful way to end a meal

From the period costumes worn by the staff in the tea room to the magnificent view off of the deck you will be absolutely thrilled with the history culture food and views

After my wonderful supper I took Larryrsquos advice and rode to the Duggan Family Cemetery

Some of the headstones are so old and weathered you can barely read them but the

insight into this family is immense

While at the Duggan Cemetery I decided to go investigate what was happening in the harbour

A salt ship from Quebec was in delivering the winterrsquos salt supplies to the Department of Transportation and I spent some time watching the trucks enter the ship be filled and leave

There are a lot of different fishing vessels here they fish for crab lobster and cod in these waters

After visiting that side of the community it was time to head to Momrsquos Place B amp B and check into my room

I was greeted by Blanche Perry who runs the place for her daughter Tina

The place is WONDERFUL

With private baths and TVrsquos in every room and a common area that is warm and inviting I knew I would feel right at home here

A big open kitchen perfect for visiting and sharing great meals

Tina is a passionate owner she wants people to truly enjoy their stay

She grilled me for a good hour on the things she could do with her B amp B to make it more rider friendly Tina purchased the B amp B 2 years ago and has been upgrading and working on improving everything from the bedding to the feel She has done a fantastic job

Blanche is a character She LOVES to help

people and is probably one of the best suited people for running a B amp B like this that I have ever met (Shersquos a good cook on top of it all)

After I had checked in and gotten the grand tour I took off on the bike up to the lookout which is lovingly refered to by the locals as Liars Lookout

There are walking trails all over the place and the views are magnificent

The next morning I went exploring some more and took a different set of trailsI have not walked this much in a long time

The place screams at you to be exploredIt was an overcast morning but the temperature was perfect for walking

Beautiful beaches are to be found along the shore often hidden and fairly secluded but accessible if you are willing to walk

Between Blanchersquos hospitality and good food and the beauty of this place I really did not want to leave but I was being offered the opportunity to see Nippers Harbour in a very personal way - with Blanche agreeing to be my tour guide and I couldnrsquot wait

A hearty breakfast - there was ample bacon and fruit to go with the eggs and toast

and the homemade preserves were delicious

I watched the Quebec ship being unloaded of all itrsquos salt from the Liars Lookout for a while

Magnificent craggy shore lines abound

Rooms are $7000 single $8000 double $9000 Queen $1500 each additional person

I left Momrsquos Place B amp B in La Scie and head-ed for the turn off to Nipperrsquos Harbour

Blanche had gone ahead in her car I parked my bike on the side of the road in a pull out and climbed in with Blanche Shersquos from Nipperrsquos Harbour and needed to check her mail and she kindly agreed to show me around

Nipperrsquos Harbour is a very small community these days At one time back at the turn of the century it had about 250 people living there and was one of the only communities in the region that could boast of having a hotel

Cod was salted here and shipped around the world and the community became known as the Capital of Green Bay as it became the economic hub for the region

Originally settled in 1804 this community was noted for itrsquos fishing salmon cod and turbot

In the early 1900rsquos a mine shaft was drilled into the ground to see if this land could produce the mineral wealth that others in the Baie Verte Peninsula had None was found

In 1950 the government built a bait tank which held frozen squid caplin and herring Personal refrigeration was scarce and many of the locals used the bait tank to store personal meats

In 1960 a road was finally pushed through into the town until then the most common ways of getting there were coastal steamers in summertime and snowshoes or dogsleds in wintertime

Nipperrsquos Harbour had a thriving inshore fishery until it was closed in 1990

It then suffered the fate of many Newfoundland fishing towns Today the population is about 99

The road to get to Nippers Harbour is gravel for about 12 KMrsquos and switches to pavement about 5 KMrsquos out The region is so rugged and rocky

One of the must views in Nippers Harbour is St Marks Anglican church It is well over 100 years ago and its use was abandoned 20 years ago It is surprisingly in very good shape and was according to Blanche sold to developers who have done nothing with it

It looks like mass was held here just last week not 20 years ago

The road into Nippers Harbour hardly prepares you for the view as you enter it

What a gorgeous old church St Markrsquos is

I walked up the one hiking trail to check out the scenery and I was captivated

The Nippers Islands were very visible and the view got better as I went up

I headed up the trail to see where the water fall began The board walk is in very good shape and can take you much higher than I got to but I was running out of time

Every little harbour town in Newfoundland has its charm but Nippers Harbour is a serenely special place and I for one would love to see tourism flourish here

Itrsquos simply gorgeous but there are no real meaningful amenities like B amp Brsquos or other types of accommodations nor is gas available here There is a convenience store to grab microwave sandwiches and cold beverages from however

I want to thank Blanche Perry from Momrsquos House B amp B in La Scie (who happens to live in Nipperrsquos Harbour) for taking me on a tour of her gorgeous community

Itrsquos the kind of place that inspires songs poetry and paintings

I hope itrsquos around for a long time for visitors to enjoy

Blanche and I said our goodbyes and I headed off towards Grand Falls - Windsor

I was hoping to take in one or two of the museums there before I headed to the BlueWater Lodge and Retreat at Notre-Dame Junction

I got rained on hard which slowed me down immeasurably and by the time I hit Grand Falls Windsor the museums I had wanted to visit were closed

The Mary March Provincial Museum is

The ldquoLionrdquo is a weather shaped rock that resembles those of the Chinese style lion guardian statues you see

in many pictures from China

reported to have a wonderful collection of rare coins the exemplify some of Canadarsquos first money They also have exhibits on Relics of Disaster - all about sunken ships and another on the 1914 Sealing Tragedy when 79 sealers from the SS Newfoundland perished after two nights on the ice fields

I would have to wait to learn more about the Sealing Disaster until I arrived at the Barbour Heritage Village at Newtown

The Loggers Life Museum was another museum I was interested in seeing and it had JUST closed when I got there

Reportedly here you can visit a recreation of a 1920rsquos loggers camp and try your hand at some of the skills needed to be a logger

Foiled from visiting the museums I headed to my accommodations for the evening the BlueWater Lodge and Retreat at Notre Dame Junction

My first impression of this place was the road going in and it was not a favorable one the

gravel road was actually rocks large rocks the kind that can cut tires not a pit run type of gravel that is smooth and packs easily It was rough as all get out

I was not feeling very confident going in here and so I stopped about half way up the almost 2 kilometer driveway and called the Lodge I expressed to the owner who I was and that I was on a street bike and having a bit of a challenge getting in there

The comment that came back to me over the phone is well there are two other street bikes here

I said awesome I am a handicapped female rider on a bike that is top heavy and I am fatigued and would appreciate having some back up just in case ldquoNo problemrdquo came the reply

A few minutes later the owner and one of the riders came up the road to meet me

They followed me into the Lodge I rode it all the way in but was grateful for the back up just in case

The gent who had driven up with the owner expressed that he and his buddy had ridden in here and that even though they both ride Dual Sports they found this road challenging on their street bikes too

Sometimes riding on different terrains can cause us anxiety especially on street bikes it was a much needed confidence booster to

hear a fellow rider accustomed to riding on rough terrain had found it challenging as well

The ride into here might have been challenging but it was more than worth it as I would soon find out

As I unpacked my bike I drank in the surroundings The beautiful gardens the beautiful trees and flowers the magnificent log building I walked around taking photos

and then the rain caught up to me again

Inside the lodge Gary Sargent the co-owner greeted me and gave me the information on my room

He had already had my bags in my room for me

I had asked about Internet as I had planned on doing some uploading to the Eastlink server but dial up connected to their own computer was the only thing available and so I chose to do some writing later that night At first I was anxious at the lack of connectivity but I soon felt that anxiousness melt away

As I looked around the lodge I took in the fact that they display a lot of local artists work

My room was comfortable with a reasonable amount of space and an amazing view from the window

The private bathroom had a shower with

wonderful water pressure and lots of hot water

Every room in the place has a different theme mine was the Balsam Sunset I believe Very peaceful and tranquil I needed that No TV no radio no Internet to work by

The theme of each room is described on handpainted panels

I headed out to the dinning room to eat and the 4 riders that were there invited me to join them They were at a large table for six and I was at a table for one

There was one other gentleman staying here and he had his own table for dinner

The choices for dinner were salmon glazed with maple or chicken breast in a cream sauce Both came with a garden fresh salad and dinner buns

For dessert we were offered a rich chocolate cake served with whipped cream

We were served our dinners by Gary who was very formal and polite

His wife Winifred is the cook And can this lady cook

The salad was refreshing and light the buns were crispy on the outside light and chewy on the inside

The chicken I ordered was tender juicy and had this flavor I couldnrsquot identify fully I could taste the whiskey in the sauce but what was the breast stuffed with None of the other riders could identify the taste either It was so subtle but definitely there

My room

Brie and applesand with the whiskey cream sauce shot through with peppercorns the chicken was positively delightful

The vegetables came from their garden and were steamed to perfection

And the dessert was melt in your mouth delicious The chocolate was rich without being over sweet and the whipped cream was the perfect accompaniment as was the rich cup of coffee served afterwards

After some lively discussion with the other riders I headed off to my room and they to theirs

The bed was comfortable and the room peaceful

My cell phone worked in a sporadic kind of way and since I was pretty much off the grid I set about tagging photos clearing camera chips and writing

At about 10 pm I shut the lights off and drifted off into a peaceful sleep and woke up feeling refreshed

The view from my room gave me pause for thought Itrsquos so beautiful even on an overcast morning

I repacked my bags and bike and headed off to the dining room for breakfastI again joined the two couples of riders for a meal We were not offered a choice for breakfast other than the type of toast we wanted We were served bacon covered with poached eggs and covered in cheese that had

been baked The jams on the table came from the table grapes and other berries grown on the property I chose the white grape jelly and it literally popped with that refreshing taste that only white grapes offer I was fueled up and ready to ride

I was a wee bit concerned with the skies that were still pretty overcast and the wind not to mention the 2 KMrsquos of very course gravel I had to traverse to get back to the highway but I also knew I had done it once and could do it again Slow and steady I headed out

Pretty soon I found myself heading towards Twillingate Newton and Greenspond

Once I got back on the highway I headed towards Twillingate I figured if I was this close to the place I had to see it Video camera on I headed out on Route 340 and found myself passing through tiny communities with the most spectacular of scenery

The road was rough and I found myself riding the centre line pretty tight as traffic would allow

The morning started off very cold and overcast but the farther north I went the more the sun began to appear

I rode alongside the Dildo Run Provincial Park and giggled like everyone else does at the name

In researching the history of the name I found out through Wikipedia that the name dates back to 1711 as the first known use The name used to be spelled ldquoDildoerdquo It is thought that Captain James Cook and his assistant Michael Lane may have given the region itrsquos name Apparently they had a noto-riously wicked sense of humour about naming the communities and regions they mapped

Although the road is rough that actually provides an opportunity when traffic allows to take it nice and slow and really take in all of this rugged wild beauty Just by looking at the terrain you know that you have to be made of tough stuff to thrive here

I slowed and took my time riding into the town of Twillingate attempting to capture a

little of the beauty on film This place is home to many icebergs and iceberg tours so many in fact that it is called the Iceberg Capital of Canada There were no icebergs for me to see however a member of our staff Stephanie is from Newfoundland and was at home visiting earlier in the year and was able to provide me with more than a few great photos to compliment our video with

Twillingate is located in the Twillingate Islands and is joined to mainland Newfoundland by the New World Island Causeway Itrsquos history

is a rich one and a number of famous people have come from this small community of approximately 2500

One of them Georgina Sterling was a prima donna soprano opera singer who went by the stage name of Marie Toulinquet and later became known as the Nightengale of the North

After fuelling up I headed back down the 340 Route I wanted to stop in Boydrsquos Cove and see the Beothuk Interpretation Centre

The Twillingate Islands region has a history of bloodshed and fighting that can not be ignored or forgotten

The Beothuk people who inhabited this region can be traced back to the 1500rsquos and are thought to have originated as a branch of the Algonquin nation and are have thought to have migrated here from Labrador

During spring the Beothuk used red ochre to paint their bodies houses canoes weapons household appliances and musical instruments with This Europeans because of this tradition referred to them as

ldquoRed Indiansrdquo For the Beothuk the use of red ochre as paint designated tribal identity decorating newborn children was the way they were welcomed into the tribe Forbidding a person to wear the red ochre was a form of punishment

Due to the arrival of the Europeans the settling of the Mirsquokmaq and Inuits the Beothuk peoples found it hard to thrive

They began a campaign of violence in retaliation and that factored into their demise as a nation Along with Tuberculosis and other infectious disease brought to the new world by the Europeans and the loss of so much of the land they had used to survive on the Beothuk peoples became listed as officially extinct in 1829

On of the most famous of all the Beothuk people is a woman named Mary March The provincial museum is named for her She

was captured during a raid in March of 1819 at the approximate age of 23 when John Peyton Jr and his men went to retrieve a fishing boat that had been stolen by the Beothuk

She had been nursing a baby boy who died a few days after the raid her husband was killed in the raid Her Beothuk name was Demasduit but a Church of England priest the Reverend John Leigh renamed her to Mary after the Virgin Mary and March for the month in which she was capturedkidnapped from her people

It was hoped that Mary March who had taught members of the St Johnrsquos community where she had been taken after a brief time in Twillingate to speak about 200 words of the Beothuk language would one day be the person to build a bridge between the

Her niece Shanawdithit died in 1829 and as she was the last of the Beothuk her nation died with her

As much as I have travelled this country everytime I travel Canada I learn more about our history heritages and cultures

It was time to get back on the bike and head to NewtownAs I got closer to Newtown the wind picked up It was a cold wind too but at least the sun was still out

I went into the visitor information centre and was directed to have some lunch (a late one) and that when I was done Cheryl would be my guide

So I happily went into the Olde Shoppe Restaurant

The place is filled with antiques and wonderful aromas and I was some hungry

Since I had determined I liked Cod Tongues thatrsquos what I ordered

With a full belly and a mind that could now concentrate again I headed back to the visitor information centregift shop and found Cheryl

She and I began a tour that would take some 2 hours to conclude Every minute of it was fascinating

Captain Benjamin Barbour and his fam-ily of nine sons and two daughters called this house home Benjamin had moved to Newtown from Cobblerrsquos Island in 1873 Up until moving into the new home in 1875 the family lived in a log house not far away He passed away in 1891

George and James became sealers George became the best known of them partially because he had been so successful but also because of the tragedy that took place in 1898 on the ship ldquoGreelandrdquo

During one of the worst sealing disasters on the seas around Newfoundland 48 men froze to death only 25 bodies were recovered

There was much controversy over the Greenland disaster as many blamed Capt George Barbour for not responding to the impending storm fast enough or for using the proper distress signals to get other ships to rescue his crew He was absolved of guilt but the history books also express that the government of the day was loathe to invoke legislation that would alter the sealing industry as it was the back bone of so much of the regions industy

Two of Benjaminrsquos sons Edward and Samuel started E amp S Barbour Edwardrsquos son Lester who had being groomed to take his fatherrsquos place in the business died during the first world war in as a member of the 1st

Newfoundland Regiment He had left Newtown for Europe in May of 1917 He died 10 months later at the age of 23 during the German counter-offensive at Paschendale Ridge Belgium on March 10th 1918 He was buried at the Oxford Cemetery near Ypres Belgium

The Benjamin Barbour House is an unusual home no matter how normal it looks from the outside

You see there are 32 rooms inside including 2 living rooms 2 kitchens 12 bedrooms 2 staircases and two front doors The house had been constructed in this manner to become the home to two of the brothers and everything could have been closed up into what we call today a duplex had the families not gotten along

Cheryl took me upstairs via on of the two staircases it wouldnrsquot have mattered which one we took as there is no wall between the two upstairs

The main kitchen with two beds for the men to take afternoon naps in

Two staircases were built to two seperate appartments in the Barbour Home this way a wall could be built if the two families could not get along together

Cheryl proved to be a wealth of knowledge and shared numerous stories of the Benjamin Barbour family she told me of Job Barbour a sealing captain who wrote a book called ldquoFourty-Eight Days a Driftrdquo and of the fam-ily members who still visit Newtown and the Barbour Village

She told the stories in such a way that you felt you could hear the laughter of children as they ran through the house and that you could feel the pain of the women who lived here as their loved ones died at sea or in war

The E amp S Barbour amp Sons ldquoStorerdquo - the Waterfront Premises amp Neptune II Theatre- is an auditorium where there are plays held during the summer depicting life of the region It has also seen community meetings and weddings be held here

Cheryl took me to the Alphaeus Barbour home next WHAT A PLACE

Captain Alphaeus Barbour was one of Benjamin Barbourrsquos grandsons and this house was built for him He later sold it to Samuel Barbour (1925) and in 1933 the Cape Freels Heritage Trust bought it

The three storey Queen Anne style home had many amenities that others of the day did not

This house had running water hot and cold running water it also boasted stain glass windows dormers and an opulence normally reserved for the bigger centers like St Johnrsquos

As work maintaining the property is ongoing I was not permitted upstairs

Cheryl explains that the dining room could be made private with the sliding doors

The next and possibly most fascinating part of this tour involved the Sealers Interpretation Centre

Now my visit here came at a bad time as all of the students who act out the roles of the various people who lived here were already gone The funding for these types of jobs had been cut shortening the length of time which the theatrical encounters can take place

Again Cheryl did an amazing job of explaining the history of sealing and answering my questions about the various artifacts and displays

As you go to the Interpretive Centre one of the first things you see as you pass by is this monument to Gary Brazil

Inside the Sealerrsquos Interpretive Centre

A replica ship built indoors everything is 14 scale or so and there are two floors The deck and the quarters

Back inside the main body of the centre

there are numerous glassed displays with models and other artifacts depicting the history of the sealers

Sealing has a deep entrenchment in the history of Newfoundlanders as Cheryl explained to me

During the 1500rsquos migratory fisherman began hunting the harp seal and the indigenous peoples have hunted the harp seal as back as 4000 years ago

Seals provided the early settlers with much needed meat during a time of year when they would be surviving off of their stored foods

The fishermen of Europe were the first to hunt seals for economic gain The oil and the pelts were highly prized in Europe The oil was used for lanterns as cooking oil and in the production of soap as well as in the preparation of leather for the creation of leather goods

Despite the modern day controversy over sealing Newfoundlanders acknowledge and

embrace their history and heritage and celebrate it in an almost deprecating way

Sealing brought food and in some cases wealth to Newfoundlanders but it also brought much heartache as well The ice that can pack up on the ocean in the winter trapped many sealing ships and many a sailor lost his life in the quest of food wealth or both

This centre brings the history of the sealer to life It documents the tragedy and the triumph of the Newfoundlander and their spirit

The history of sealing and the evolution of it is woven deeply into the fabric of Newfoundlandrsquos rich and storied history

The Sealerrsquos Interpretive Centre is an amaz-ingly frank look at the industry its history and its role in shaping the people of Newfound-land

The Methodist Schoolhouse was the last building we would visit on this tour Filled with artifacts from the region this schoolhouse is very much like the one room schoolhouses that were all over rural Canada in the day

You see it truly takes a local to do a credible job of telling the stories and history of a region and Cheryl born and raised here was able to share so many wonderful little tid

bits and information and I thank her deeply for sharing the stories and history of the region with me The tour will cost you $10 for adults and $20 for a family It will be

The day was getting away from me I headed towards Norton Cove Studio in Brookefield and Greenspond and the Harding House B amp B where I would be staying for the night

I had wanted to stop into the studio but by the time I got there it was too late in the day for me

It was cold and bitterly windy and the Courthouse in Greenspond was not supposed to be closing until 6pm

I would not be able to do justice to the art of Janice Davis at Nortonrsquos Cove Studios if I could only spend a 12 hour

So I kept on towards Greenspond as I was a good 40 - 45 minutes away and it was now 430 pm

As fate would have it I got to Greenspond only to find the Courthouse Museum closed

early and I was out of fuel - and Greenspond does not have a gas station I got lucky though I talked to a lady at the fishery and her husband had some gas that hersquod deliver to me at 830 in the morning

Itrsquos amazing how unpanicked I felt about the gas I was more upset that I had not taken the time to visit the art studio With nothing else to do I went and got checked in at the Harding House B amp B

This beautiful old home has been transformed into a very modern B amp B without loosing any of its charm The current owner Abigail Crocker is a wonderful hostess

I got to the back door of the B amp B and there she was waiting on the back porch to greet me

I felt like I was visiting the house of a long lost friend

This very engaging woman has done a lot of work to this historical home updated electrical bathrooms plaster board - the entire thing is up to code and yet you still feel like you are in a turn of the century home

After I got my gear settled in my room I went to the kitchen to join Gail I insisted that I would feel more comfortable in her kitchen than anywhere else in the house

She made some coffee and explained the

Cherylrsquos great grandfather a master carpenter had made the glass curio cabinet that looks like a bible

history of the Harding House to me

Harding House was built for Edward Harding in the 1890rsquos

Edward had one daughter who married a man named James Dominy who tragically drowned shortly after their marriage

His widow moved to St Johnrsquos and the house was rented for several years to the Newfoundland government for use as a dwelling for the local magistrate

Early in the 20th century Thomas Harding bought the house and raised his family thereThomasrsquos wifersquos name had incidentally been Abigail

Built of wood timber construction and featuring a steep gable roof with double bay windows this home retains its original wood shingles on the peaks above the bay windows as well as some of the decorative bracket work on the front facade and the windows are also original to the home It is a wonderful representation of the homes in the region at the turn of the century

Tom Hardingrsquos three grandsons Harry Fraser and Rick sold the house in 2002 to Gail Crocker

On September 7th of 2002 the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador designated Harding House as a Registered Heritage Structure

Gail is very proud of the work she has done to keep the Harding House feeling like a home and so she should be

Gail is also a very talented cook with a gift for gauging her guests and their needs well

She can be as open and warm or as ldquodistantrdquo as the guest would like her to be

After an amazingly delicious dinner of cod fresh vegetables potatoes and a bun I was served one of Gailrsquos famous scones In fact she shares her recipe on her web site so whenever I want to I can make some have a coffee and daydream about my time in Greenspond and getting to know Abigail I so identified with her spirit of determination

Gail called the gentleman who is the town administrator and got me an appointment to see the Greenspond Courthouse for 9 am It normally doesnrsquot open until 10am

I was tickled at the opportunity to see this very historic courthouse

After a bed time cup of tea and another scone it was time to get some sleep

I slept peacefully in the beautiful room with the amazing view a smile dancing on my face I am sure

It had been a fabulous day and I truly felt like I was beginning to know Newfoundland and itrsquos people

As usual I was up early and set about getting myself ready for the day ahead

I had found out that there was a special wed-ding taking place in St Johnrsquos on this fine Wednesday

I packed my gear and took it down to the bike I headed back in to the house and the smell of fresh coffee and breakfast

At 830 am sharp the gentleman from the fishery stopped by with a jug of gas that I gratefully paid him for

At just before 9 am I headed over to the courthouse to meet the gentleman with the key

Like all of the people I had met in Newfoundland so far he was polite and engaging and very apologetic that the courthouse had not been open until 6 like the web site said it would be

He explained that cut backs have made it so that staffing issues become a real challenge here so when someone is not feeling well like had happened the day before there is no one to fall back on to keep it open

I assured him it was no challenge and thanked him for opening it up early for me to visit

Having been settled in the 1690rsquos Greenspond is one of the oldest continuously inhabited outports in Newfoundland and became known as the ldquoCapital of the Northrdquo because of itrsquos position on the main sea lanes

The Greenspond Courthouse Museum contains a wide variety of artifacts that help to tell the tale of Greenspond

This courthouse which was built in 1900-01 and embodies the Second Empire building style has over the years served as a courthouse a jail jailers quarters and as a temporary morgue during shipping disasters

Today it is a museum that harbours precious relics and memories of a time gone by

William Henry Churchill the man who designed this building was the Superintendent of Public Buildings at the turn of the century when this courthouse was built and he was well known for using the Second Empire style as the foundation for many of his

designs This building is a designated heritage site

The Greenspond Courthouse museum offers us many samples of the tools of the time covering everything from shoe making to fishing

The view of Greenspond from the dormer windows in the tower of the courthouse - stunning is a word that comes to mind

Like every community in Newfoundland there is a strong tie to the sea and the military here and they are proud to display their heritage

Greenspond today has a population of about 300 but in itrsquos Hey Day it boasted a population of close to 2000

The Court Room

There are many pieces of art including one from Louise Maude Saunders who was Newfoundlandrsquos first lady

I took the opportunity to go to the top of one of the walking trails to take some photos of this ruggedly handsome community and region

Pretty is not a word to describe it beautiful and stunning donrsquot do it justice

This region simply takes your breath away I will let the photos show you the rugged beauty I find it hard to truly describe

This place is hauntingly ruggedly gorgeous I would love to have spent more than a half of a day here

I was treated with kindness I was given help without a second thought

The fact that I was on a motorcycle made me a rarity but the fact is these small places are seeing more and more riders venture off the beaten path

I have heard a lot of the locals complain that you have to go up and back down the same road to visit a place But as a tourist both

directions of your trip up and down the same road can be anything you want them to be

There are attractions restaurants and interesting little towns all along the routes to the more remote locations and in some cases the larger tourist attraction regions like Twillingate

You can stop at a few places on the way up and a few more on the way down and really truly get to know Newfoundland So while the locals may tire of the same old roads they are the very roads you and I as a tourist want to explore

I wished that there were more hours in a day and more of me left at the end of each day so that I could have explored even more

This trip here has caused in me a desire to come back and at this point in my trip it was far from over But like many a rider I was already mulling over what a return trip would look like and the places I would have loved to have explored this time will become what I explore next time

My next stop after Greenspond was St Johnrsquos I was being met by Frank Gogos of the Beaumont - Hamel 2nd CAV and he was going to escort me into my fellow CAV member G Dawgrsquos wedding

It caught me completely off guard when I found out the wedding was on a Wednesday and that I could actually be there Frank and I pulled into the church parking lot where

Frank handed me off to Debby Lake also of Beaumont-Hamel 2nd CAV Frank had to get back to the foundry he works at

I got to spend a few moments with G Dawg before his wedding gave Tony from Moncton a great big hug and then it was time for the wedding It was a beautiful ceremony and I was so glad to be there and film it for him After the wedding I had about 10 minutes to give my best to the bride and groom before Debby whisked me off

She escorted me over the the NTV Studios where I was interviewed for the 6pm NTV newscast to promote the ride we were hosting there

After we got done at the studios we were off to get me checked into the Guvrsquonor Inn

This is the kind of place a good number of riders will choose to stay in for the bulk of their vacation

They are affordable clean have driveride up parking They offer laundry facilities have a pub on site for breakfast and supper and have some of the friendliest staff around

We got me checked in and unloaded some of my un-needed gear like my clothes and then we headed over to Frank Gogorsquos house to wash my bike

We shared a few laughs and a few giggles and then it was time to head to the Legion

Peter Dawe of the Relic Riders was there with his Hummer that we used to sell patches from and a place to keep Rita out of trouble when I was busy with other things

Somewhere around 15 - 18 bikes were in the parking lot I chatted with each of them as I got their photos with Rita We had a quick safety and ride meeting and pretty soon kickstands up was called

Sadly three of the riders couldnrsquot come with us but we none the less had a great time The road up to Cape Spear where we would be heading was twisty and winding went through old sections of town out to much newer ones and then we started to climb and the next thing I know Cape Spear and about 30 other bikes were there to greet us

What a glorious sight

I was even more bowled over when I found out they were waiting here for us to arrive

After pictures registrations and a whole lot of hugs and photos it was time for me to share my plea about making the needs of our veterans an election issue and why

After the talk we shared more hugs more photo ops and pretty soon it was getting darkWe all departed for various places our little group stopped for gas and coffee and it was decided that we would go and crash G Dawg and Michellersquos reception

We had a blast

We werenrsquot there for very long as I needed to get to the tasks of charging cameras and clearing chips

A few of the riders rode me over to the motel and we chatted outside for a bit Debby stuck with me until I got to my room only I couldnrsquot get into my room

Neither key worked So off to the front desk I went got two more keys and was right back at the front desk The bewildered gal at the front desk met me back at my room where we discovered housekeeping had not closed my bedroom window which turned out to be a good thing as thatrsquos how I had to enter my room

I felt a bit creeped out at first but it appeared that the entire door lock assembly had failed

After making sure nothing was missing and that I had everything I needed the gal from the front desk left the room Debby and I

chatted about the plans for the next day as I unpacked cameras and began the process of getting them ready for the next day

The next day was to be more of an afternoon and evening for me I was going to take in the Newfoundland Foundry and get Screeched in on George Street but not before I got my Jiggs dinner

On January 2nd 2014 I will share with you my final days on the Rock and the event that signalled the end of my Conga and how well we did in raising funds and awareness for our troops and veterans

Zeus said Your request is materialistic think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific The concrete and steel it would take It will nearly exhaust several natural resources I can do it but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things

Take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify me

The biker thought about it for a long time Finally he said Zeus I wish that I could understand my wife I want to know how she feels inside what shes thinking when she gives me the silent treatment why she cries what she means when she says nothings wrong and how I can make a woman truly happy

When out in the yard there arose such a racket I ran for the door and pulled on my jacket

I couldnt help gawking the old guy had classBut I had to go in -- I was freezing my ass

With a smile and some glee he passed out the loot A new jacket for her and some parts for my scoot

He patted her fanny and shook my right handSpun on his heel and up the stovepipe he ran

From up on the roof came a great deal of thunder As that massive V-twin ripped the silence asunder

With beard in the wind he roared off in the night Shouting Have a cool Yule and to all a good ride

I still have lots of stuff to unpack even more that needs to be organized and squirreled away but my garage is taking shape

It is still too small for what I need but proper height ceilings level floor proper electrical proper everything makes

the space feel a lot bigger then it use too

As I sprint across the -46 degree back yard it is overwhelming to be in the garage at room temperature My tools are warm the bikes are snug as a bug in a rug waiting for me to finally get to them Above everything else having the space heated constantly is the thing that makes me smile makes me take a moment and savour the heat radiating from the corner

Yes Im bragging a bit about my garage Many

work in much worse conditions Trust me Ive done my time working under tarps that do little more then collect the water to the lowest point before it seeps through usually right above where Im working or where I have to lay down to work

Ive run my fingers through thick grass looking for that nut bolt washer that I just dropped that specialty clip that has to be used Ive rummaged through loose dirt looking for the socket or wrench that I just set down Ive scraped an inch of hoar frost from my bike so that I could get at the bolts

We all make it work not because we want too but because it has too Ive never run into someone who said that they had too much space Even the ones that are content with their refuge from society when pushed sheepishly admit if they had a couple more square feet they could buy this tool work on that bigger project It is the nature of the beast Give us space and we will fill it

Sometimes the chair I sit in can be a very disturbing place

I had been doing some research yesterday for an article I am working on when I came across several articles regarding roadside surveys in Texas where they were taking blood samples mouth swabs and using passive breathalyzer machines on randomly selected drivers

Upon further reading and investigation I read about 2 Alabama counties that had also run the roadside surveys back in June In the back of my mind I thought - no way this has to be a hoax I ran the information through snopescom and no fraudulent articles came up so I thought maybe I am not asking to search the right terms

I posted two of the articles on Facebook and asked for peoples opinions and was told by a friend from Texas that yes in fact these roadside surveys had been conducted in Fort Worth I went to bed last night feeling

disturbed How could this kind of thing be going on in the USA and there be no real public outcry or anger at civil liberties being abused

I started my morning reading emails running through the news feeds and doing research with my morning coffee in hand and as I came across a 2007 report from PIRE my coffee ended up all over my computer screen and keyboard

What caused me to spit my coffee out in absolute bewilderment and disgust

Pilot Test of New Roadside Survey Methodology for Impaired Driving

This study developed and tested procedures to enhance roadside survey procedures to include collecting and analyzing oral fluid and blood samples from the nighttime weekend driving population Roadside surveys involve collecting information from a random sample of drivers In the past they have been used to measure the

extent of alcohol use in the nighttime driving population in order to establish regular measures of that activity which is a measure of progress in reducing impaired driving This study developed and tested techniques to extend the scope of that measurement to drugs other than alcohol Breath and oral fluid samples were successfully collected from over 600 drivers at 6 locations across the United States Blood samples were obtained from approximately half of those subjects Laboratory analyses for alcohol and other drugs were conducted on the oral fluid and blood samples Procedures and results are described in this report The findings indicate that this form of expanded roadside survey is practicable in the United States The intent of this Pilot Test was to develop and test procedures that would be used in the next full-scale national roadside survey It was not designed to yield a nationally-representative sample of the nighttime weekend driving population thus the results are not representative of the United States as a whole

The news that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US had in fact contracted PIRE to do a PILOT Study on Voluntary Roadside Surveys made what was reported out of Texas in the last few days and Alabama back in June to be highly believable

What people in the two states Texas and Alabama reported is similar to the information reflected in the 2007 report off duty police officers work with PIRE to take blood samples mouth swabs and use passive breathalyzer

machines to collect data on drug and or alcohol impairment and what drugs drivers may be using

What stuns me beyond belief is how many Americans gave up their rights and freedoms for a reward of approximately $65 I guess that is the price of freedom in the United States these days

Just to confirm the information I have read the news articles out of Texas and Alabama that I came across and the 2007 report on the pilot test I found I did Email the NHTSA and asked questions regarding the recently reported roadside surveys

Ill let you know if I get any answer but with the time and distance between the survey stops that have been conducted so far and the fact that there is no confirmation on a currently running program on either the NHTSA or the PIRE web sites I highly doubt that this organization will come across with any information What I did learn through the various articles I read is that some 30 cities are to be targeted this time and the program is costing some 79 million dollars

In doing further research I came across some connections to MADD that had me my eyebrow raised

MADD in the US is partnered with PIRE as a sponsor and Kathryn Stewart - a sociologist and PIRE team member is on the board of directors for MADD

In Canada MADD is attempting to push legislation via a private members bill

introduced by the NDPs Tarik Brahmi that would lead Canada down the same slippery slope the US appears to be on

The Night Before Christmas

Trsquowas the night before Christmas He lived all alone In a one bedroom house Made of plaster and stone

I had come down the chimney With presents to give And to see just who In this home did live

I looked all about A strange sight I did see No tinsel no presents Not even a tree

No stocking by the mantle Just boots filled with sandOn the wall hung pictures Of far distant lands

With medals and badges Awards of all kinds A sober thought Came through my mind

For this house was different It was dark and dreary I found the home of a soldier Once I could see clearly

The soldier lay sleeping Silent alone Curled up on the floor In this one bedroom home

The face was so gentle The room in such disorder Not how I pictured A Canadian soldier

Was this the hero Of whom Irsquod just read Curled up on a poncho The floor for a bed

I realized the families That I saw this night Owed their lives to these soldiers Who were willing to fight

Soon round the world The children would play And grownups would celebrate A bright Christmas day

They all enjoyed freedom Each month of the year Because of the soldiers Like the one lying here

I couldnrsquot help wonder How many lay alone On a cold Christmas eve In a land far from home

The very thought brought A tear to my eye I dropped to my knees And started to cry

The soldier awakened And I heard a rough voice rdquoSanta donrsquot crygt This life is my choice

I fight for freedom I donrsquot ask for more My life is my god My country my corpsrdquo

The soldier rolled over And drifted to sleep I couldnrsquot control it I continued to weep

I kept watch for hours So silent and still And we both shivered From the cold nightrsquos chill

I didnrsquot want to leave On that cold dark night This guardian of honour So willing to fight

Then the soldier rolled over With a voice soft and pure Whispered ldquocarry on Santa

Itrsquos Christmas day all is securerdquo One look at my watch And I knew he was right ldquoMerry Christmas my friend And to all a good nightrdquo

This poem was written by a soldier overseas The following is his request I think it is reasonable

rdquoPLEASE Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people as you can ldquo

Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our Canadian service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities

Letrsquos try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we do

The Foot Dragger

The reason I bring up the foot dragger is because I see more and more of it all the time Im not sure if this is due to there being a lot of new riders on our roads or just simply a lack of knowledge of the basic riding techniques

Then again it cant be just a newbie problem because Ive seen people I know that have been riding for over 30 years drag their feet around an entire parking lot I know what the problem is it is instinct Your instincts tell you youre going slow the bike may fall over so keep your feet down just in case

As Ive stated before riding a motorcycle is not instinctual Most of the time the proper technique is actually the opposite of your instincts as in the case of the foot dragger

All this came to mind recently while I was doing some filming at the Leesburg Bike Festival I watched a middle aged rider obviously looking for a parking space on Main Street riding about 5mph drag his feet the entire length of Main Street

It was at least a 14 mile of some of the

worse foot dragging Ive ever seen I had to use the zoom lens on my video cam to catch the entire spectacle I think many riders arent ever aware theyre doing this

Heres your first clue if you wear out your shoes before your tires on your motorcycle youre probably a foot dragger Another draw back of being a foot dragger is that people who really know how to ride will pick you out as a no riding fool and they will point and laugh at you behind your back If thats not enough to discourage you keep this in mind

You could get your foot caught between the muffler and the pavement and break your ankle In addition you really cant control your bike at low speeds while dragging your feet because your foot isnt on the rear brake where it needs to be at low speeds

The answer fortunately is very simple As soon as you let the clutch out and the bike starts to move pick your feet up and put them on the pegs or floor boards

At parking lot speeds (below 15mph) use your rear brake only and stay in the friction zone remember at low speeds if you hit your front brake when your handlebars are turned even slightly it will pull you to the ground

Using the rear brake while in the friction zone and applying power will keep the bike upright just as if you were going 50mph instead of 5mph

Practice the slow race (going as slow as you can with both feet on the pegs while feathering the rear brake) Remember to keep your head and eyes up and look where you want the bike to go Never look down at the handlebars or the ground

Practice this technique and youll find you have better control of your bike your shoes will last a lot longer and you will no longer look stupid while riding through the parking lot at the local bike night

Folks yesterday Wounded Warriors Canada launched a very exciting innovative event

The WWC Battlefield Bike Ride 2014 will raise funds for PTSD service animal programs The ride will last 5 - 15 June Juno Beach - Vimy

Commencing on the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings This ride will be a bucket list experience not only will we cycle in our forefathers footsteps we will take in all that rural France has to offer

Frankly I am getting tired of hearing that Vets are paying upwards to $25k for a service dog To my mind some of the folks that supply dogs are war profiteers We do not charge a thin dime to any Vet in need of this great tool to fight the demons of PTSD

The need is great as we all know Now before we digress into VAC should pay for them You are right That said we need to prove it works this will take time

Calling all moms dads and grandparents Many in the riding community love to pass on their passion for motorcycling to their children grand children nieces and nephews

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks Im too old to track down terrorists You cant be older than 42 to join the military Theyve got the whole thing ass-backwards

Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight they ought to take us old guys You shouldnt be able to join a military unit until youre at least 35

For starters researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a month leaving us more than 280000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy

Young guys havent lived long enough to be cranky and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier My back hurts I cant sleep Im tired and hungry We are bad-tempered and impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while

An 18-year-old doesnt even like to get up before 10am Old guys always get up early

to pee so what the hell Besides like I said Im tired and cant sleep and since Im already up I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch

If captured we couldnt spill the beans because wed forget where we put them In fact name rank and serial number would be a real brainteaser

Boot camp would be easier for old guys Were used to getting screamed and yelled at and were used to soft food Weve also developed an appreciation for guns

Weve been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house away from the screaming and yelling

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however Ive been in combat and never saw a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training

Actually the running part is kind of a waste of energy too Ive never seen anyone outrun a bullet

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him Hes still learning to shave to start a conversation with a pretty girl He still hasnt figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes not the back of his head

These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about

life before sending them off into harms way

Let us old guys track down those terrorists The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million pissed off old farts with bad attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them

Winter weather causing chaos on the West CoastWersquove endured some of the coldest temperatures this past week that we have seen here in a long while

And the snow this past week really made life difficult All one inch of it Hilarious what

happens here on the ldquowet coastrdquo when we get a skiff of snow It seems most drivers think that when there is a little snow on the ground (and in many cases a thin sheet of ice under the snow) the trick is to drive faster which wouldnrsquot be so bad if they would only realize that hills pose a challenge whether going up or down

Itrsquos actually entertaining to park in a safe spot near the bottom of a large hill and take in all the action Particularly when you consider the high percentage of people who are driving on summer tires And we wonder why our insurance rates are so high

This afternoon a buddy and I were driving in North Surrey and heard the sweet sound of rumbling pipes and as we turned around to look we both wondered who would be riding in the snow on a day like this and wouldnrsquot you know it a hard core rider who comes to our Freedom Biker Church

A biker friend of mine told me that years ago he and his buddies were living in Saskatchewan at the time and they would ride their Harleyrsquos on the highway in the middle of winter in the ruts in the snow And today a friend told me they used to hammer nails into the tires (with tubes) of their dirt bikes and ride on the frozen lakes up north I kind of need to see that to actually believe it but it does sound like a good rush

Donrsquot know that you could call it withdrawl but a lot of the riders in our church park their scoots over the winter and are now counting the days down until most renew their insurance which for many is April 1st giving them six months to ride

Myself Irsquom insured year round and while I donrsquot mind riding in rain on occasion Irsquom not a fan of riding in icy conditions so these days my bike is getting detailed a lot more often than in riding season I must confess to outright envy when I see or hear of folks actually riding their scoots year round in places like Southern California

When you think of it the four seasons are a lot like life Spring is the time most folks get their bikes back on the road and as the days grow longer so too do the rides

The spring is a time for growth and optimism a time where new life springs up and the colors of nature appear seemingly from nowhere The springtime of life is all about discovery adventure and a string of ldquofirstsrdquo

Summertime is every riderrsquos happy place long days dry roads and summer holidays In life we bask in the summer sunshine and while working hard to provide a good life we enjoy the summer vacations typically good health family friends and some of the good things that this life has to offer

And then comes the fall temperatures drop and leaves change colors to paint a kaleidoscope of mother naturersquos finest handiwork

Riding season is quickly coming to a close as most riders winterize their scoots and sadly park them for the coming winter Ironic how in life we know when we are entering the fall season of life energy levels subside health issues begin to crop up and while hair thins out it seems to start growing in places never before seen and these things called wrinkles or lsquowear markersrsquo begin to appear

Still going strong at least in our minds we wonrsquot be deterred and for most of us there are many great years in this season of life

Winter season (at least in Canada) is typically a time where we reminisce and think back on the past reflecting on the good rides and great friends wersquove encountered while our scoots sit idle in a garage where the temperatures have dipped well below freezing for weeks or months And from what Irsquove been told people in the winter season of life

do a lot of that too Reminiscing about the past the good times and the friends loved ones and families that have brought joy and happiness to them during their lives

And oddly enough Irsquove been told that just as we bikers feel like the riding season has ended far too soon so too do the people in the winter season of life feel as if their life has flashed by at light speed and is coming to an end far too quickly

We read in our ldquoOwnerrsquos Manual for Liferdquo in the book of James chapter 4 verse 14 ldquoHow do you know what your life will be like tomorrow Your life is like the morning fog--its here a little while then its gonerdquo

And I for one will say the older I get the faster the sands of time run down and cause me to reflect on my life in a past and present tense and more than ever a future tense I realize this scripture pretty much sums up our lives on this planet we are here for a short time and then lsquopoofrsquo gone forever

I have the assurance of knowing where my future is as I know with certainty that I have a citizenship in heaven and as Irsquom in the ldquofall seasonrdquo of my life my passion in life is to tell people about this amazing relationship that we can all have with God our creator thatleads to eternity in heaven which will far exceed anything this world has to offer

The next stop on my Newfoundland adventure was La Scie - a French name for The Saw as the mountains around La Scie resemble a saws teeth

Used by the Basque fisherman La Scie was founded in about 1504 as part of the French Shore and approximately 1200 people call this lovely harbour town home in 1904 the French quit fishing here and the English settled the region

I stopped in at the Outport Museum amp Tea Room One of the first things about this home museum and catches your heart and imagination is the 16th century Basque fishing boat - Chaloupe Hendaia that rests out front

Itrsquos workmanship is amazing and makes you eager to go inside and see what else is on hand

I walked up the driveway and stepped into the early 1900rsquos

Inside I was greeted by owner Larry Whalen

This charming man took me through his family home that is crammed full of regional memoriabilia

He spoke with great pride of the building of the replica Basque fishing boat and the pride he felt sailing her

He told me the tale of the Irishman named Daniel Duggan who took care of the French fishers gear in the winter time

He explained that the French would head back to France to see their loved ones and get prepared for the next fishing season and the British would take advantage of their
