  • About the Headpins

Originally formed by Brian MacLeod and Ab Bryant as a sort of side project from Chilliwack, the group was rounded out by drummer Bernie Aubin and Darby Mills, one of the west coasts hottest new singers.

Their impact was immediate even before theyd landed a record deal, quickly earning the reputation as one of the west coasts most energetic and magnetic live groups. The bands chemistry with the crowds was rivaled by few and they soon became one of the hottest commodities in Canadian rock, beginning with

their first show in hometown Vancouver backing up Blackmores Rainbow in 1979.After winning a local radio contest, the group released TURN IT LOUD on the independent Solid Gold Records in 1982. Co-produced by Bill Henderson, who Bryant and MacLeod played with in Chilliwack, the record allowed the Headpins to hit the scene with an experienced master behind the controls.

Charged with emotions, MacLeods guitars rang predominant, almost a friendly battle with Mills immediately signature voice.

With Bryant and Aubin serving a tight powerful backbeat, the lead-off title-track grabbed you by the balls and refused to let go, and would soon find its place in rock history as one of rocks greatest anthems of all time. The band would go on to double platinum status,

and stayed on top of the charts for six straight weeks. Visit the bands website

    About Pat Savage

In his late teens, his extraordinary talent caught the eye of many top Canadian artists and performers, and since then, for close to 30 years, Pat Savage has graced many stages in many countries with rock & blues artists such as Joe Cocker, Foghat, Saxon, Savoy Brown, Matt Guitar Murphy, Albert Collins, Uli Van Roth, Scorpions, Manfred Mann, Slade, Sweet, Uriah Heep, Steppenwolf, Molly Hatchett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King, Marshall Tucker Band, Grand Funk, Georgia Satellites, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jeff Healey and Colin James to name but a few.

Pats many talents in writing; production and performance have won him accolades in Canada, the USA & Europe throughout his vast music career, and his CDs have been critically acclaimed in major bike magazines, blues and rock magazines and in the mainstream press all over the world. It was Pats third solo release Hog

Wild which secured his first major record deal with SONY in Europe.

In the last three years Pat has taken a much needed break from almost three decades of relentless touring to perform at the largest Harley Davidson events, as well as at major rock and blues festivals from Norway to South Africa and from Iceland to Dubai!

Taking time away from the road, Pat started work filming episodes for his Savage Roads television and Pay Per View series, which has seen him filming and riding in such exotic locations as South Africa, Norway and Thailand.

The series is still in independent production and will be available in the 4th quarter of 2013. With 2 brand new albums being recorded now and his new television series, Pat Savage is well and truly back, and its safe to assume that he will once again be rocking his fans all over the world in 2013!

We all had a great time at the event last year and would like to thank everyone who attended and made it another problem free event that was said to be a roaring success. We are happy to be able to do it again in Sicamous, BC where we are sure it will remain for the next 24 to 124 years. Steve Hammer, Summer Stomp Executive

  • The building, which houses The Rosewood Caf, is thought to have been built in 1897, on the corner of Water and Fifth Street in Kaslo, BC. Estimated cost was

approximately $900.00 to then owner, Duncan McPhail.

The structure changed hands many times and has housed businesses such as Dominion Permanent Loan Co. Toronto, from 1904 to 1921.

Alfred Fournier resided upstairs during this period. Occupying the residence starting in 1921, Clarence J. Garrett purchased and occupied the building until 1923 when Frederick E. Archer (many time Mayor of Kaslo) took possession. The building was then moved in 1923 to the site where it sits today at the top of Front Street.

The building was renovated around 1992 to house a cappuccino bar, bookstore and bed & breakfast.

Owners Sara and Darcy Pommier eventually leased the 38-seat space to now owners Chef

As we say hello too yet another riding season here in the Okanagan, we look back at last years adventures of good and bad times.

Unfortunately we lost two of our founding members. Gloria Taylor (Glo) and Ron Gompf (Butch), their sudden passing last fall has taken a toll on many riders in the community.

I have personally lost a great friend and mentor in Butch. If it wasnt for him, I probably would not be where I am today. As for Gloria, she was we all know, a strong woman and never backed down from any obstacle that stood in her way for herself, or for a fellow rider. We are all going to miss you both but will never forget what both of you meant too each and every one of us at one point or another in our lives.

Last years riding season was off to a slow start with all the rain we had in the spring, but finally summer came and we were able to take our rides out and enjoy the great sites and rallies that were put on. I was only able to attend a couple due to work etc. but the ones that I got to attended were awesome. I was glad to see some old friends and make a few new ones, and also to spread the news about our organization.

Boogie bash,,, well last years attendance was higher than it has been in the past, and I would personally like to thank everyone that

came out and supported our cause of helping down riders, a special gratitude goes out too all the volunteers that helped to make last year a very successful one. We hope you all are able to come again to this years Boogie Bash as it will be our 25th annual,,, wow hard to believe that it has almost been 25 years since Glo, Butch, Tom Doyle and the rest of the great folks who started our Okanagan Chapter, and we are so grateful they did.

As its getting time to put our rides back on the road I would like to remind everyone to ride safe and keep the rubber side down and we will see you all soon.

    In Honour of

The fall of 2012 was a heartbreaking one for the Interior Chapter of AIM in that it lost two of its founding members. Ron Butch Gompf passed away on September 9, 2012 followed closely by its founder, Gloria Taylor on October 4, 2012.

In 1986/87 Gloria, who had been injured in a motorcycle accident in the United States and received help from an organization there - Aid to Injured Motorcyclists reached out to its Canadian counterpart, the Vancouver

based Association for Injured Motorcyclists (AIM). Gloria was determined to establish a chapter of AIM in the Okanagan where she knew there was a need for an organization of riders helping riders. Vancouver AIM was happy to help, but of course they were in Vancouver and had no funds with which to assist Gloria in her quest.

Gloria immediately enlisted the assistance of a core group of acquaintances including her long-time friends, Butch Gompf and Tom Doyle. Together they reeled-in anyone that they thought had the time, energy, contacts and belief in her mission to help her make it happen. If they had some money too that didnt hurt.

Gloria was very out-spoken, always telling it like it was and never sugar-coating anything. What you saw with her was what you got. Gloria was tenacious in pursuing the undertaking at hand.

  • She would not take no for an answer when she approached anyone for funding, door prizes, donations, memberships, serviceswhatever. Sometimes people ultimately said yes to Gloria just to get her to go away!

We must remember that Gloria undertook this significant task at a time when there were not many women riders. Gloria always seemed to want to do things that she should not do! She was fiercely independent and determined in everything she did.

Telling Gloria that she could not do something was like waiving a red flag in front of a bull. The more people challenged her, the more resolute she became.

Butch was a work horse and he knew everyone. Gloria had the vision and Butch had the contacts, strength and stamina to help her make things happen. He worked tirelessly alongside her to host events raising awareness and money for the Interior Chapter of AIM. Butch and Gloria had a mutual respect for each other and sometimes they had differing opinions (they were both very stubborn) but they always managed to come together for the good of AIM in the end.

In May of 1987 the first AIM event was held. It was a simple dance at the East Kelowna Hall that was very well received by the riders in the Kelowna area and many of their friends from out of town. A little money was raised,

some more memberships were sold and AIM was on the map.

That same spring under her guidance AIM put on a display at Orchard Park mall (riding your bike through Orchard Park mall after hours is quite a rush). For 3 days Gloria and other members sat beside the motorcycles, answering questions about AIM, selling memberships and talking with lots of old guys who used to ride motorcycles in the war. Gloria was in her element. She was showing the citizens of the Okanagan that motorcycle riders were something more than the way they are portrayed in movies they are a group of people with a common interest who care about each other very deeply. That spring was the beginning of an organization that has seen many good times, bad times, changes, conflict and revivals but remains strong to this day.

After a few years, when Gloria felt that AIM was strong enough, she backed away, leaving it to others to carry on its good work. No doubt she had another challenge that was calling to her, even then. Tom Doyle sadly passed away many years ago. Butch was a single man when all of this started. He then married and fathered a son who occupied the majority of his time but he remained supportive of AIM and ultimately came back to sit on the Board of Directors since AIM had now become an incorporated Society. Butch continued to be involved with AIM and was a valued member of the Board and volunteer for many years. It did not matter what needed to be done, Butch was always up for the challenge.

Collage, Gloria, Butch & Tom created by Arlene Coulter

  • In 2000 Butch was seriously injured in an accident while returning home from working at an AIM event in Kamloops.

He never really recovered from that accident, having times when his health was pretty good and then relapses due to his injuries.

Over those years he continued to be a strong believer and advocate for AIM and attended as many events as his health permitted.

Because of Butchs devotion to the organization and in recognition of the assistance that AIM provided to their family after his accident, Butchs long-time partner, Wilma, took up where Butch left off. Wilma sits on the Board and devotes many volunteer hours to AIM, just as Butch did. The past couple of years have also seen his son, Sterling, attending Boogie Bash.

A few years ago Gloria was diagnosed with ALS and, never one to just sit back and take what came at her, Gloria became the face of a lawsuit challenging Canadas legislation preventing persons the right to die with dignity.

That lawsuit was successful, adding another victory to Glorias lifes accomplishments. While her list of accomplishments was long, at the top of it would always be her two sons, Jason and Clint and her granddaughter, Gabrielle.

Gloria attended 2012 Boogie Bash and although she no longer rode her beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle or proudly displayed her many tattoos, she was given an opportunity to tour the grounds and greet many old friends and meet some new ones. The pride that she felt at having been the

originator of such a great organization was evident when you looked into her eyes.

Butch and Gloria have now been reunited with many old friends gone before them, including, Tom Doyle. We are sure that the 3 of them are shaking things up in heaven. Rest in Peace our friends. You and your role in establishing the Interior Chapter of AIM will never be forgotten.

Special thanks to Lynne Holmes for preparing the above memorial, and to Arlene Coulter for creating the collage of Gloria, Butch and Tom.

Sadly, we lost a friend to many, Pete Leenhouts on September 18, 2012 in a motorcycle accident on the Sunshine Coast.

It is said that what he loved most in life was his family, and his passion was anything with a motor - his Harley, and his Land Cruiser.

Pete had many exceptional talents, with the Intelligence to create and construct, many unique projects. These included modified four wheelers, motorcycles, and equipment.

Many of his family and friends relied upon him to find solutions to their mechanical dilemmas. In his business and as an employee, he had the ability to draft an idea, create it, and had the persistence to make it work.

  • BOOT CAMP

Well spring is here and you can almost feel the excitement. And nowhere is it felt as strong as Trev Deeley Motorcycles in Vancouver BC where on the evening of March 07/13 they hosted their second Harley-Davidson Boot Camp, an event that hosted 60 men and women from all over BCs lower mainland and Vancouver Island with the intention of giving them a broad view into the motorcycle world.

Most were new to motorcycles and wanted information on how get their licence and what

they should buy for a bike to get them into the wind.

There were also others like Mike that attended last year, purchased a bike in July of 2012 and wanted more info for when he is ready to upgrade, to Roger who is interested in buying a Road Glide.

The staff at Trev Deeley Motorcycles were a wealth of information, pointing out the different styles of bike and the attributes of each one. They let the people go through the gears on there Jumpstart bike which they are going to

  • Lipstick in School

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom.

That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips on the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls

to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine all the yawns from the little princesses).

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachersand then there are educators.

  • There you are cruising down the road just enjoying the ride. Youre a safe distance behind the SUV in front of you, when suddenly a large tree branch appears in the center of your lane.

The SUV went right over it without a problem. Unfortunately, the tree branch is too large for you to go over it and it came into view so quick, you dont have time to brake.

What should you do? Obviously, you have two choices. Now the untrained rider will probably look at the obstacle and run right into it, the trained rider will simply get off the gas and counter-steer around the obstacle.

Lets talk about counter-steering for a moment.

Above about 15mph, the gyroscopic effect of the motorcycle becomes apparent. In other words, to go left you push left on the left hand grip. To go right you push right on the right hand grip. Now, this would seem the opposite of what you should be doing. But, believe me, it isnt. At speed, when you push on the left grip it causes the bike to lean to the left, and since a motorcycle at speed turns by leaning, when it leans left it goes left and visa versa.

The good news is counter-steering is instinctual. Anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle above 15mph and has turned even slightly, has counter-

steered. If you doubt me, try this. Cruise down the road at 30mph, keep both hands on the grips, but loosen your hand on the right grip, then push slightly on the left grip. Your bike will immediately lean to the left and steer to the left. Then try pushing on the right grip, youll quickly understand the counter-steering phenomenon.

Now youre ready for an obstacle avoidance exercise. Its called the 30mph cone weave, but should be practiced at lower speeds until you get the hang of it, 18 to 20mph would be a good starting point. All you need is 3 cones set at 36 apart with the center cone offset 3. Go to the left around the first cone then to the right around the second cone, the third cone should be on your left as you pass it.

Sounds easy, doesnt it? Well, give it a try and youll see that it isnt as easy as it sounds, especially at 30mph. If you want to make the exercise more difficult, add more cones or increase your speed. Once mastered, this

exercise will improve your obstacle avoidance skills immensely.

Redcliff Swap MeetSat March 9, 2013 was the date for the Redcliff Annual Swap Meet.

This is always a great time of year to reconnect with all the family we lose touch with during the hibernation months of winter.

Although the temperatures were relatively nice for March there was still a fair amount of ice/snow on the roads and only one rider made it out to the meet on their bike.

This year the S.E.A.R.S riders were on hand to help with this event. The turnout was about the same as last year with 300 paid admissions.

Approximately 35 tables were were set up with various items for sale. Items ranged from used bike parts, to leather accessories & clothing, jewelry, oil products, custom paint, etc.

A 50/50 draw netted the winner $175.00 and the family of a deceased rider donated touring bags for door prizes.

The beverages & food vendors were kept busy throughout the day.

I always come away from this day feeling like spring is really just around the corner and that means riding season!!!!

    Weird, dude

So, I occasionally like to watch a guy named Bill Shatkirk or William Captshatner or some such thing do some show about weird stuff... that just cant be made up. (Let me have my little bubble).

With the PMS blues on us and St. Paddys day over, I went hunting

some odd stuff... and I just had to share. Heres to riding season, but hope you get a chuckle or a headscratch in the meantime!

    - Ice Boulders form on the shore of Lake Michigan; It just has to be cold for this stuff... it seems rounded ice boulders hanging out on the shores of Lake Michigan arent simply someones idea of a prank... theyre naturally occurring formations!

Michigan resident Leda Olmstead was walking her dogs last week and noticed the uber-snowballs, so she took some pictures, thinking they were pretty cool. There were hundreds of the icy globes scattered around, and although it would seem theyre an oddity, they are in fact created when the wind, the water and the waves work together to round the edges of chunks that break off of the sheet of ice that covers a lot of the lake.

The lumps are tumbled around and around, beat up by the waves until theyre smooth, and they then wash ashore, where hundreds of stoned college kids can say DUDE.. look. The natural creations can exceed six feet in diameter, and are solid ice. Glad nobodys chucked one of THOSE at my car!- Croation television personality Zlata Muck was hosting a kids educational show when she suddenly struggled with a line, and then fainted straight out. She was rushed to the hospital but

pronounced fine on arrival, the fainting episode being attributed to a side effect of being pregnant.

The line she was trying to deliver when she passed out, when translated using the Reddit online resource, amounts to .... Good Morning, and welcome to School Hour. Today, the first half of our show will be dedicated to one of the most important elements on Earth... Oxygen. Without it, there............................ THUMP. These method actors, hey? Just totally immersing themselves in the role.

    - It shouldnt have surprised me, but the fellow who holds the record for the most times to the top of Mount Everest.... is named Appa Sherpa. Hes been to the top 21 times, and was also the first person to successfully take a gang of climbers through the Great Himalaya Trail, which is about 1700 km long, and is known as one of the most difficult passages in the world. His nickname? Super Sherpa. Who knew?

    - In Russia, the Punisher isnt a cartoon character... hes a bus driver! Alexei Volkov, from Zelenograd, is sick and freakin tired of people who cut him off, and hes decided to do something about it. Alexei has been in more than 100 traffic accidents, because hes caused a lot of them by simply smashing into drivers who cut him off.

Not only that, he posts the dash cam videos on his YouTube channel for all to see, and hes apparently not getting in a lot of trouble... the courts seem to agree that the other drivers were at fault. What could I do he said after a recent incident...swerve into oncoming traffic, or suddenly brake and maybe injure my passengers?

If either of those things happened, the rules over that way could cause Volkov to lose his license to drive bus, and probably let the guy who cut him off go scott free.

And I found a few one-liners to leave you with... hopefully Ive distracted you from your parked motorcy...............never mind... have a good one!

In spite of this, no Blue Whale has ever been spotted wearing a loud pipes save lives patch... however, there are also no records of a Blue Whale ever being injured when someone in a car didnt even see them there... the jury is still out on that one, I guess!

HELP MAKE HIS DREAM RIDE POSSIBLEBy Robert aka LoneKnight

Larry McKenzie aka Loopy Da Loop/ Big Larry, his motto on the ALW website is Loopy Da Loop the wolf that would rather shake your hand, then to eat you.

As an Alberta Lone Wolf Admin & leader in Calgary, Larry plays a big part in the website, bike nights and events in Alberta since day one of 2009.

The Lone Wolf Drifters Crew meet every Tuesday evening at Drifters Restaurant, 2515 - 50 AVE. SE. Calgary (the ESSO under the blue roof). Larry is married to Sylvia and they celebrate their wedding anniversary on Oct. 27th. He has 3 sons, Larry Jr., Dietrich, Heath & one

daughter, Angela. Larry is co-owner of an Indoor Paintball & Laser Tag arena as well as an Indoor Airsoft and Laser Tag arena.

Both arenas are located in Calgary, which he started in 1994. Larry is originally from Hagersville, Ontario but has lived here for many years and is now 100% Albertan.

He always wanted to do the Port Dover run in Ontario, a traditional bikers rally. Larry said it was always on the bucket-list. Every Friday the 13th since 1981, bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts converge on the small Ontario town of Port Dover on the north shore of Lake Erie. This annual rally attracts over 500,000 bikers turning Main Street into a five-block-long bike-only festival.

Larry, riding with the Alberta Lone Wolves, was always a big part of the Border Bike Rally in Lloydminster Alberta for the past few years. One of Loopys first Lone Wolf riding brothers was Tony aka Tojo. Tojo told us about the first year riding to the BBR. The back route they took coming from Calgary entailed muddy road construction with lots of slipper clay mud. Well Larry went down!

When they arrived in Lloyd they took him to a carwash to hose him off. He was picking mud out of the engine fins for days but in his good nature laughed it off. He has been riding since he was old enough to kick the lights off of cop cars laughing Tojo. Larry started riding back in 1964 on his grandfathers 1946 Indian motorcycle. He thinks that old classic Indian is sitting in a family members barn back east if the Auction Hunters didnt get it.. Brother & sister riders, fellow Lone Wolves who have had the privilege of meeting Larry, you know what an awesome guy he is! Luckily I am one brother rider who has met him.

Message I received from Larry/Loopy da Loop:

A few days ago I was told, I have about six months. I have cancer in my throat. It is at stage four and keemo is not going to help unless I can improve my health a lot.

The Calgary Drifters Crew has agreed to help me organize a large numbers ride. Something to help me reach a dream I have. I would like to set up a ride involving upwards of 1000 bikes.

Just join me on a big group ride. Any ideas on inviting all the riders we can to help fill this dream.

Victoria MC Reg Shanks Trial Results March 17, 2013From Roger Boothroyd

Crisp, clear weather greeted the thirty-three riders competing in the annual Reg Shanks Trial held at the Clubs property on Happy Valley Road in Victoria. Ten sections were laid out with varying degrees of difficulty for the six classes but that dif-ficulty was enhanced by the rainy days before the event making some sections very slippery. How-ever, all the riders enjoyed the event which was set up by: Paul & Mike Cubbon, Brandon Volk, Lucas Longstaff, Rhys Hathaway and Jordan Mc-Farlane. Rob Gialet, his friend Gwen & Rick Kool handled sign-up and scorekeeping.

Four of our younger members, Brandon (14yr) Lucas (16) Rhys (15) and Jordan (17) set up the Junior, Vintage, and Intermediate sections and course loop, a job well done! Thank you to all the committee members. The next VMC Trial will be held on April 13/14 - The Joe Brown Major Trial, vintage bikes only on Saturday, modern bikes on Sunday.

Trials training in Nova ScotiaMichael Traves has announced that there will be a trials training day at Miller Meadow, NS on April 27. Jonathan English will be the instructor.

Trials training in OntarioBob Billyard has announced a trials training school in Ontario on April 27 & 28. The instructors will be Dan Johnson and Jordan Szoke. Cost will be $75 for adults. Click here for the flyer and details.

    Trials demo at Halifax show

Weve heard from Hugo Pich and Stephane Vallee about the trials demo at the recent Atlantic

Outdoor Sports & RV Show. Some Quebec riders from the ATAQ club joined Maritime trials riders to put on the show.

Stephane Valle from Halifax was responsible for the obstacle course layout and apparently the show was much appreciated.

CPTA February Trial, February 17 at Ioco, BC Bill Sparks takes expert win

The CPTA February trial took place on February 17th in beautiful, almost spring-like, weather at Ioco, B.C. More then 35 riders showed up to try three short loops of 9 or 10 sections.

The weather was dry, so conditions were great for riding. But the scores tended to get higher on the last loop as exposed roots got slipperier, sections

got rougher and riders got tired.

Results were tight in a few classes as one point or two cleans made the difference, although Bill Sparks (in the picture) is still showing the younger

riders how to do it in the Expert class.

It was great to see a number of new riders out and it looks to be shaping up for another good season of riding for the Canada Pacific Trials Association.

If you are assigned a middle seat, you can determine who has the seats on the aisle and the window while you are still in the boarding area. Just look for the two largest passengers.

Only passengers seated in window seats ever have to get up to go to the washroom.

  • Saskatchewan Ride for SightWe have a date of June 22 - 23 and will be held in

the community of Elbow, SK.This will be a weekend family orientated event.

We are looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping out contact: Al

    Brewer through Facebook

As I look out across the stark whiteness of the four feet of snow in my yard and the 12 deep ruts in the ice covered street I dont think Ill be riding any time soon.

Every year I am amused as my friends would count down to the middle of

March, the supposed unofficial beginning of riding season in Saskatchewan.

While Ill agree there have been years where I have ridden my bike to the Moose Jaw Swap meet that weekend, more often then not it would usually be a few more weeks before the ice and snow would release my bike from the winter clutched of the garage.

This winter has seen an unusually large amount of snowfall for us in the Great Plains but the national weather service assures me that it has been a milder then usual winter.

Some of that has to do with the wild temperature swings from -40 to barely above

freezing back down to -40 sometimes with 48 hours.

The other factor is telling people that it will be -40 for the next week is not exactly the greatest for tourism so we invented wind chill.

What wind chill means is that even though the thermometer says -40, and it feels like -40, if you sealed that thermometer in a sealed chamber, in an enclosed room - it will only read -20 so they tell everyone it is only -20.

So while the record books have recorded balmy Saskatchewan winter days of -15C the real temperature was sometimes closer to -50 thanks to wind chill.

So here I sit with a few more weeks of winter, a few more weeks of pining for the open road.

I check the web sites to see which bands have been added to play Sturgis, read the updates from Daytona, plot out my weekend schedule of places and parties to be at and take comfort that soooon this winter will be over.-bad Uncle Monkey

    What YouCan Do

    R.A.G.E (Riders Against Government Exploitation)

    - Motorcycles have been paying less than needed and now, as a result of their angry outburst, other drivers will pay more to make up that $9M shortfall. That other vehicle owners are covering the shortfall.

    - Rate cap at 15% for this rate review.... The goal is to have motorcycle insurance rates cover the associated claim costs within the next three years.

    - SGI has been directed to review its rating approach for motorcycles, including injury benefit levels, and to examine ways to improve motorcycle safety programs.

Talking Points to the above statements:

    1. $9M shortfall. SGI has yet to show the actual data as far as this is concerned. Not proposed or projected databut actual claim data to show that motorcycles are causing a shortfall.

    - Nowhere in SGIs proposal (new or old) does it state that the motorcycle vehicle class caused a $9M shortfall due to not paying their way. where is this actual, true, past data?

    - The buzz around this $9M shortfall was picked up by the media from SGI.

    - High injury claims were mentioned as causing the shortfall, yet none of this data has been pro-vided. what is the breakdown of the claims and costs associated?

    - High costs due to sport bikes were mentioned as causing the high number. where is the data to prove this?

    - Motorcycles being at fault 52% of the time caus-ing the claim costs to be assigned to the motorcy-cle vehicle class. Nowhere in the world, but Sas-katchewan, are motorcycles at fault 52% of the time in accidents. SGIs own data shows only total claims. It is not broken down into single-vehicle, two-vehicle, nor are there any data pertaining to the breakdown of costs, fault, etc. SGI has simply

    SK News - R.A.G.E.The Busted Knuckle Chronicles March 21st, 2013 Page 29

    Continued on Next Page

  • taken the total number of claims (not accidents) and the ratio of not at fault to fault is 52%. againwhere is the data that proves this 52% at-fault accident claim?

    - The expected shortfall could actually be a result of SGI attempting to re-classify motorcycles as recreational. Motorcycles in Saskatchewan are recreational vehicles. SGI feels that custom-ers with necessary, non-recreational vehicles should not be subsidizing recreational vehicles. SGI is recommending that motorcycle rates be moved to adequate. (2013 SGI Auto Fund Rate Application MFR 7 Page 3)

    2. Rate cap at 15% for this rate review. Motorcy-cles will have to eventually cover their own claim costs. SGI needs to remove the increase for motorcycles completely for this rate review. They need to go back to the drawing board and re-work their whole approach to motorcycles in their corporate model.

    - SGI has not yet realized the revenue from the 2012 rate increase to motorcycles.

    - SGI has raised motorcycle rates enough already without addressing the real issues behind increased claim costs. The average increases are: 2007 15%, 2009 25%, 2012 30%

    - Only once SGI decided to embark on the path of re-classifying motorcycles to recreational has the argument for surfaced that motorcycles are not paying their way. Prior to this their arguments for raising rates have been 50% of all motorcycle accidents result in death, motorcycles are at fault for 52% of all accidents and, sports motorcycles are responsible for increasing costs.

    - SGI has not shown any data as to what motorcycle claims are actually costing. Data that can be analyzed, broken down and determined if it is being calculated correctly as per the accident / claim reports. Every attempt to get pieces of this data has been met with zero cooperation.

    3. The whole other vehicles paying for motorcycles argument. SGI, and Minister Harpauer have done extreme damage by foster-

ing and encouraging an us vs them mentality.

The Auto Funds philosophy is that all drivers are treated equally unless their driving record shows they are a greater risk for causing a collision. It does not use a drivers age, gender or where they live to determine a vehicle insurance premium or the fee for a drivers licence. It has successfully maintained this philosophy while offering Sas-katchewan customers low rates, proving its merit. (Managements Discussion and Analysis 2011 page 11)

    - The Auto Fund has always operated as a pool of funds for all insurance claims. Why are motorcycle vehicles being singled out?

    - SGI and Minister Harpauer may have, in fact, placed motorcycle riders in the province in even more danger due to their statements.

    - In fact, the increase is a whole $7 a year for 55% of vehicles already scheduled for an increase. An additional 8% of vehicles, not in the original proposal, will see an annual increase of $35.

    - The motorcycle vehicle class should have, in fact, been treated like a regular vehicle class for the purpose of rate increases right from the start. Motorcycles are not a recreational vehicle in Saskatchewan. They are like convertibles.

    4. SGI needs to begin treating the cause of the increased insurance claims. Not the vehicle. It is driver behavior that has been driving the in-creased claims. Driver behavior of all drivers, not just motorcycle riders.

    - Increase safety programs around motorcycle awareness in schools

    - Month long safety awareness campaign from mid-April to mid-May every year to remind drivers that motorcycles are, or will soon be, on the road and to be aware of them

    - Mandatory rider training programs for new riders- Hands-on riding test for new riders in order to attain the first tier of the learners program - Ongoing experienced rider training programs

for those long-term riders needing to update their skills

We, the members of R.A.G.E. are appalled by SGIs and Minister Harpauers attempts to create an us vs them environment for vehicles and motorcycles. The motorcycle vehicle class has been the hardest hit in each and every rate review since 2007. The people who ride motor-cycles in Saskatchewan are also other vehicle drivers as motorcycles are like convertibles in our province. The Auto Funds own philosophy is all drivers are treated equally unless their driving record shows they are a greater risk for causing a collision. Note the word drivernot vehicle.

The approach by SGI and Minister Harpauer may have, in fact, put many motorcycle riders (drivers) at an even greater risk for injury or damages to our vehicles this coming season. How do SGI and Minister Harpauer plan to address this? We, the members of R.A.G.E. would like a public apology and a full media release stating this apology.

    SK News - R.A.G.E.The Busted Knuckle Chronicles March 21st, 2013 Page 30

    Continued on Next Page

  • The latest increase from 2012 (an average 30% increase) to the motorcycle class of vehicle is not even included in any financial data released by SGI. In fact, SGI will already be recouping much of the expected to incur shortfall they are estimating to occur. There are also approximately 5000 more motorcycles being licensed from the 2010 motorcycle numbers provided by SGI to 2012, based on an average increase of approx. 2100 more motorcycle registrations added each year since 2007

The 2013 Rate Review should have a zero increase to motorcycle rates. Instead, SGI should be mandated to look at the causes of the increased claim amounts. Not increased claims themselves, because from 2011 to 2012 those amounts have dropped.

Even though motorcycle registrations have been increasing (meaning more motorcycles on the road each season) the numbers of claims have been dropping. Yet, SGI is stating the financial effects of those claims is increasing. Why?

Increasing rates year, after year, after year, obviously has had zero effect on the dollars associated with the claims. Should driver behavior not be looked at? Increased awareness programs? Increased Rider Training programs? Really, no one knows, not even SGI, as no actual data on these claims has been released for anyone to look at. Well, no actual data other than actuarial data and that data is useless when it comes to figuring out why? It is useless when it comes to predicting future behavior, as has been pointed out to SGI by the Rate Review Panels own expert consultants.

Also futile would be changing the way SGI insures motorcycle vehicles at this point. The issue isnt the vehicle, it is the driver. It is the lack of awareness and safety that currently exists.

Premier Wall and Minister Harpauer should be applauded for recognizing that ways to improv-ing motorcycle safety and awareness needs to be addressedand quickly. We, the members of R.A.G.E. look forward to having a voice at the table.

We are having a charity run on August 4, 2013 in STURGIS,

    SASKATCHEWAN.

We have had this charity run for the last 3 yrs. we let the charity run the show as the breakfast and the supper and we organize the run.

We do a 400kms run and get back to Sturgis for the supper.

This year it is for the cadets. The first year we raised money for the wheel chair acces-sible playground in Preeceville and last year we raised money for the daycare in Sturgis. The run is $20.00 per motorcycle.

An elderly golfer comes in after a good round of golf at the new course and heads straight to the bar/restaurant area of the club house.

As he passes through the swinging doors, he spots a sign hanging over the bar that reads:

COLD BEER: $5.00 HAMBURGER: $10.00 CHEESEBURGER: $15.50 CHICKEN SANDWICH: $18.50 HAND JOB: $250.00

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary money, the old golfer walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractivefemale bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled golfers. She glides down behind the bar to the old golfer.

Yes? she inquires with a wide, knowing smile. May I help you sir?

The old golfer leans over the bar and whispers, I was wondering young lady, are you the one who gives the hand-jobs around here? She looks into his wrinkled eyes and with a wide smile purrs, Yes sir, I sure am.

The old golfer leans in even closer and into her left ear says softly, Well then, be sure to wash your hands real good, because I want a cheeseburger.
