At the Maine Seacoast Mission, we help people be something big, whatever that may mean for them. Desiree Grant is an alumna of our EdGE program. Today, she is a student at the University of Maine at Machias with a scholarship from the Mission. Her big dream is to be an art teacher and artist in Washington County, and she’s well on her way to making that happen.

“People set good examples for me and I learned from that,” Desiree says. She started in EdGE’s afterschool program in 4th grade and continued with EdGE all through elementary school. As a high school student, she became an EdGE counselor. Now Desiree is a student at the University of Maine at Machias and part of the EdGE staff team for our summer day camps.

To help her succeed, the EdGE program strengthened Desiree’s problem-solving skills and character traits such as motivation, persistence, and grit, while reinforcing her knowledge-based skills in reading, writing, and math. No less importantly, the Mission also offered a social network and the support of people who valued and encouraged her every step along the way.

Since the 1970s, the gap in this country between children who have the knowledge and social skills to succeed in their lives and those who do not has widened considerably. A new film called Choosing our Future: A Story of Opportunity in America produced by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) features programs that are pioneers in closing this gap, including school programs in urban Detroit, southern California, and rural Maine—our own EdGE program. (The film will be released online soon;

the corresponding report is available at opportunityproject.ets.org.)

This powerful film appropriately places our work in a national context. Urban children, rural Maine children, minority children—in many ways, they face similar hurdles. EdGE is giving children both the knowledge and social skills needed to succeed in life. I know Desiree will be “something big,” because she already is.

Thank you for your interest in and support of Mission programs like EdGE; you are making a difference in Maine.

Sincerely,

Scott Planting, President

“Playing chess helps kids think logically and analytically,” says Isaac Marnik, outdoor specialist for the Mission’s EdGE, or Ed Greaves Education, program that provides afterschool, in-school, and summer programs to more than 700 children from Gouldsboro to Machias. Growing up on Deer Isle and Mount Desert Island, Marnik was the Maine state scholastic chess champion. Now, in addition to his outdoor work with EdGE children, he teaches the game to third graders in the Milbridge, Cherryfield, and Harrington elementary schools.

“Chess builds math and language skills,” Marnik says. “The teachers are happy to have chess in their classrooms, because they see the benefits. They see their students learning about thinking, and how to be patient while their opponents are thinking.” This is the third year Marnik has visited each of the third-grade classrooms for a half hour every week.

“Chess is different than the other games or sports these kids play,” Marnik notes. “It’s a head-to-head competition between two people. When you lose, you’re responsible—you can’t blame anyone else. When you win, you’re the winner—you’re responsible for that, too.”

Marnik says the students get frustrated sometimes, because they usually lose half their games. But they also learn that it’s okay to lose. “You’re not going to win every game,” he says, “but you can still learn from your losses.”

The kids look forward to playing chess

each week, Marnik says. Some go home and try to beat their parents. They also have the option of playing chess at the EdGE summer day camps, where Isaac holds small tournaments designed to let every student play lots of games.

Learning chess, Marnik says, fits perfectly with the goals of the EdGE program. “EdGE allows kids to have opportunities they normally wouldn’t have. They can play chess, they can experiment with art, they can go ice skating or biking or on the Sunbeam, and they can travel with us to Boston, or Washington D.C., or New York.”

“All this,” Marnik says, “gives them ideas for the future and gives them choices. They can choose to go to college, either in Maine or somewhere else. They can choose to come back to Maine or not, or stay right here. In chess, you make a lot of choices. At EdGE, we honor those choices.”

The Island Health Program was first cited in the Mission’s annual report for 2000 as an “ambitious five-year goal.” The next year’s report tells us the Sunbeam has a telemedicine exam room, and Sharon Daley, RN, is hired and caring for islanders.

In the 15 years since then, Director of Island Health Sharon Daley, RN, has made positive gains with the Island Health Program. Here are milestones for 2015:

Island Health ProgramAn “ambitious goal” coming true

Fifth annual Elder Care Conference attendees

n 100+ primary care/behavioral health appointments via telemedicine aboard the Sunbeam and though land-based units

n Hosted 5th Annual Elder Care Conference bringing together about 20 representatives from 10 islands

n Worked with elder care homes administrators, increasing MaineCare funding to island elder care homes

n Organized many in-person and via Telemedicine educational programs

n Administered over 90 flu shots

n On four islands, 55 people had vision screening and eyeglass prescriptions

n Served as school nurse and representative of the federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

n Hosted Ann Backus from Harvard University on three islands for talk on the occupational health hazards of lobstering

n Used bridge calls to connect islanders

2015 DonorsPrivate giving remains the cornerstone of sustaining and growing health, education, and community services for Downeast and outer island communities. Annual giving supports nearly one-third of annual operating costs, with the Mission’s endowment and special gifts providing the rest.

On behalf of the Mission’s many beneficiaries, its board, staff, and legion of volunteers, we extend deep appreciation to the generous souls who contributed in 2015. If you wish to be listed differently or see an error or omission, please let Thomas Thompson know at [email protected] or 207.288.5097.

That spirit is very much alive today, and the Mission’s Maine People, Maine Spirit campaign celebrates it. The campaign is on the home stretch to securing a full $4 MM match from an anonymous foundation for endowment that will support the Ed Greaves Education Program (EdGE):

n $6.4 MM is in-hand or pledged from generous donors and foundations.

n $800,000 remains to secure the fi nal portion of the matching grant and achieve the goal of $8 MM.

These endowed funds will help sustain

the EdGE achievements in building the aspirations, educational achievements, and life skills of Washington County youth long into the future. Data show trends going in positive directions.

Firmer ground is also being laid for the future of the Island Health Program, which seeks to endow the position of director of the Island Health Program. The Island Health Program has brought medical and other health-related services to outer islands for over 100 years, and endowing this position ensures these vital services will continue.

Building fi rmer ground for youth, health, and community

Maine People, Maine Spirit

A Ruth Lepper Gardner illustration from Anchor to Windward

In his classic book, Anchor to Windward, Edwin Vincent Mitchell chronicled his many trips aboard the Mission’s

Sunbeam in the 1930s, writing:

There are no better neighbors in the world than the people of Maine islands. In times of crisis and danger,

all differences, if any exist, are forgotten, and everybody rallies around the one who is ill or in trouble. It is the

same spirit which the men in the lobster boats showed at Seal Island when they stayed together

in the snowstorm.

Right: Connie Greaves Bates, pictured here with Jock Williams, has worked tirelessly for the campaign, which she chairs. Jock coordinates a tennis tournament at Northeast Harbor Tennis, whose proceeds benefi t EdGE. This year’s is September 10, 8-5, with a rain date of September 11. Call or email Anna Silver about playing: [email protected] or 288-5097.

And the Community Resource Center at Weald Bethel at Cherryfi eld, which provides lodging and meeting space for the community throughout the year and for over 300 volunteers who take part in the Housing Repair Program, needs $350,000 to fi nish the renovations to meeting, sleeping, and bathroom facilities these dedicated young volunteers deserve.

To supporters who have already joined this effort: heartfelt gratitude, and please spread the word!

To other readers, the Mission needs many hands here to succeed, and we hope you will join the campaign in ways that are right for you—big and small, as is the Mission’s tradition.

We will share news over the fall and winter, with a goal of announcing success by spring 2017. Please be in touch with President Scott Planting or Development Director Ellen Pope to explore your questions, interest, and gift options in confi dence.

THE MISSION’S DOWNEAST CAMPUS T

Joe Murphy and Bill Eason retired from the Mission’s board of directors at its annual meeting on July 13, 2016 after 11 and 9 years of service respectively. Kelli Theriault Hutchins was elected.

MISSION LEADERSEason and Murphy retire, Hutchins steps up

Joseph M. Murphy received the Mission’s highest honor in 2015, the Sunbeam award, in recognition of his exemplary service to his communities and to the Mission. Joe has held most every post at the Mission. President Scott Planting described him by saying, “Joe is a wise man. He takes the time to distinguish between information and wisdom. In my own work with Joe at the Seacoast Mission, when we are faced with difficult decisions, Joe carefully weighs the impact of each decision on those who it will most deeply affect, the people we serve.”

William Eason’s even hand and deep governance expertise served the Mission well, mostly recently as head of its governance committee. Like Joe Murphy, Bill wore most every hat during his tenure and has been described as “being curious, kind, and clear,” and of having “a great attitude,” and of being “very interested in islanders,” and in being “willing to take on difficult issues.”

Kelli L. Theriault Hutchins of Bangor and Southwest Harbor has been elected to the Mission’s board of directors. Kelli, who holds a B.A. in journalism from the University of Maine, worked at Atlantic Awards until 2012 and is active in both her communities. She serves on the boards of Husson University and the Causeway Club, with prior service to the boards of the Bangor YWCA, the Bangor Humane Society, Junior League of Bangor, and Literacy Volunteers of America-Bangor.

Cookie Horner, Jack Russell, and Edward Flanagan were honored by a capacity crowd of friends and supporters at the Mission’s 13th annual Sunbeam Awards Gala on August 19th (visit seacoastmission.org to read more about the honorees). The Mission thanks everyone who attended, volunteered, worked, and contributed to the GALA’s success and extends a special shout-out to 2016 GALA sponsors:
