As a family, vireos are small tomedium-sizedbirdsthatseemsimilartowarblersatfirstglance,apartfromtheirheavierbillandgenerallydull-green plumage. In fact, the wordvireoisLatinfor‘Iamgreen.’Mostvireo species are migratory, andreturntotheirbreedinggroundsinearlyspring.
Ofthe13truevireospeciesthatarepresentintheUnitedStatesandCanada,noneismoreatriskthantheblack-cappedvireo,whichhasbeenontheendangeredspecieslistsince1987.At4.5inchesinlength,itisthesmallestvireotooccurregularlyintheUS,andrangesfromonlythreecountiesinOklahomatocentralandwestTexas,andsouthtonorthandcentralMexico.
Ahandsomesongbird,adultmaleblack-capped vireos are olive greenabove and white below with faintyellow flanks and wing bars. Aglossyblackcapisbrokenbywhitespectacles that frame brownish-redirises, and the bill is black, sturdy,and slightly hooked at the tip. Ittakestwoyearsforamaletoreachfulladultplumage.Femalesaresimilarlymarkedbutdullerincolor,andhaveaslategraycrownandgreenish-yellowunderparts.
RecentresearchhasshownthatBlack-cappedvireoshavethelargest repertoireof songnotes todraw from,about ten timeslargerthanothervireos.Themalesarepersistentsingers,usually

Black-cappedvireosnestinbrushyareascalled‘shinneries.’Groupsofshinoakorsumacofappropriateheightanddensityarecriticalsuccessfactorsforbreeding,withthemostimportantrequirementbeingfoliagethatextendstogroundlevel.Oncetreesbegintoreachtofullsize,thevireoswilllookforotherearlysuccessionsitesinwhichtobreed.Nestsareanopen,hangingcup,only15-50inchesfromtheground,andaremadeofleaves,grasses,plantfiber,andspidersilk.Obscuredfromviewbyfoliage,theyareoftendecoratedwithitemslikelichensorbitsofpaper.Theopeningtothenestisusuallynarrowerthanthenestitself,butthenestisdeepenoughsothatanadultbirdcansitinsidewithonlyitsbillandtailtipshowing.
Boththemaleandfemalesharethetaskofnestconstructionandincubation.Afterthethreeorfoureggsthatarelaidhavehatched,thefemaledoesmostofthebroodingwhilethemalesuppliesmostofthefood.Whilebreedingpairsaresometimesabletoproducemorethanoneclutchofeggsduringthebreedingseason,themale
cares for some or all of the fledglings, while the female re-nests,sometimeswithanothermale.
The black-capped vireo is endangered due to multiple threatsofbroodparasitismby thebrown-headedcowbirdaswell as lossof suitable habitat through urbanization, fire exclusion, livestockgrazing,andbrushcontrol.Femalecowbirdsmayremovesomeofthehosteggsfromthenestandreplacethemwiththeirown.Theseeggshatchfirstandthequicklygrowingnestlingsout-competethesmallervireonestlingsforfoodandnestspace.Cowbirdtrappingandhabitatmaintenanceandcreationthroughprescribedburningandmechanicalmanipulationareahighmanagementpriority inprimeareasliketheBalconesCanyonlandsPreservesystem.
