- To access the different levels and areas, a person in a wheelchair does not have to drastically change their course. They can access via a ramp, and do not have to go out of their way and away from their friends to an elevator.
- This building is celebrating movement through ramps, rather than hiding it. The ramps purpose is beyond utilitarian.
- The spaces found within this space are intimate and comfortable while still being connected to the greater whole. A disabled person can navigate through this space without having to hide in an elevator, they can continually be a part of the space.

- Access to all levels of this garden space makes it easy and inviting for individuals with disabilities to come and enjoy the space on a quiet day or during a performance. Knowing that spaces such as this exist encourage the disabled to get out and visit gardens instead of sitting at home with nothing to do.
- Parks and gardens are not usually designed with the disabled in mind. Their activities/experiences are often centered around the able-bodied public, but here I was able to experience all activities and views without obstruction or difficulty.
- The garden was easy for me to navigate in my wheelchair just by using ramps. I was able to experience all parts of the garden without assistance from a friend.

Ball Memorial Hospital
Citizenship:• Citizens, specifically those in the Cancer Center, are treated as human
beings instead of patients that need to be fixed.• Personal interactions for the sickest of patients controlled from the
moment they are dropped off to the time they leave.• Goal is to keep the patients in a comfortable environment and avoid
contact with other patients and faculty.Public Sphere:• Circulation separated for patients undergoing chemotherapy and
radiation treatments.• Higher end materials used in the Cancer Treatment waiting room
instead of cheap, low cost materials that are usually associated with hospitals.
Worldview:• Ball Memorial begins to change the views on how patients are
treated by the Hospital.• Many hospitals treat patients as simply that, something is broke that
needs to be fixed.• Focuses on the individuals feelings not just what is physically wrong
with them.
The Cathedral of Christ the Light – Oakland California
Citizenship:• Designed as a complex that includes a school, community center all
focusing on the cathedral. • The congregation has decided to allow for free parking during mass to
permit any member to come to the masses.
Public Sphere:• This community feel is vital to a congregation in making sure that
everyone is able to attend the community events and masses.• When approaching the Cathedral you will make your way up an over
sized ramp, doubling as a main entry and as a handicap ramp.• By making such a dramatic entry like this anyone who is in need of a
ramp doesn't feel like a second class citizen.• Always an aging population
Worldview:• Mass is spoken in four different languages to include all of the
immigrants in the bay area. • Want to be viewed as a destination or hopefully a pilgrimage site. • New age Cathedrals is intended to help enlighten the public on how
the church is becoming more and more up to date with society and the needs of its people and community.
