1377 Friday 17 November 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College community, We are quickly approaching the end of another school year. The VCE Examinations are progressing well and our students appear to be managing the heavy study load, many spending time with staff during the day to revise or hand in practice work to assist with their preparation. As I stated at the final full school assembly last week, the focus for all remaining year levels in the coming weeks should be revision for upcoming assessments. I urge all students to remain on task to ensure that their end of semester report reflects their best possible efforts. In the meantime a number of interesting College events have taken place which I bring to your attention. Year 7, 2018 Information Evening On Wednesday evening of last week we welcomed the families whose children will be attending Loyola in Year 7 next year. A very large number of parents and students attended this event which focussed on organisational matters that will assist these young people in their transition to Loyola. This is the second evening parents and students have attended as they prepare to join our Loyola community. Families heard from a number of speakers and then went into House groups to meet Heads of House and House parents. The students will return for their Orientation Day in December. I thank all who contributed to the success of the evening. College Play This year’s College Play: The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon was performed in the Inigo Theatre over two days at the end last week. It was a wonderful performance which provided engaging and humorous entertainment for all who attended. I congratulate all the students and staff involved. Year 7 Reading Challenge and Year 8 Million Word Challenge I was delighted to be able to celebrate with the many students who won the two year level challenges there were 26 Year 7 students and two classes at Year 8 who came out the winners. A high tea for the Year 7 students and a Pizza lunch for the Year 8 students were both popular rewards. I thank Ms Do, Head of our Resource Centre and her staff for setting up the programs to encourage reading and the development of Literacy skills. Year 9 City Experience This week our Year 9 students have been on their City Experience program. 1377 Friday 17 November 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College community,

We are quickly approaching the end of another school year. I urge all students

to remain on task to ensure that their end of semester report reflects their best possible efforts.

Such programs require a significant amount of organisation and I thank Ms Crowe, Student Programs Coordinator Years 7-9 for overseeing the program. I thank the

many staff who journeyed with the students in the 3 day program which provides students with insights in various aspects of life and issues related to our City centre.

Visual Arts and Technology Exhibition This event was held on Monday evening of this week in the Inigo Theatre. The high quality of student work was evident across a number of areas within the Arts and Technology faculties. It was again particularly pleasing to see the Fashion Parade with an increase in the number of garments being made by the students and more students involved in the modelling of the garments. The support of families in attendance was high and the pride of parents in their children’s work was most evident. I was delighted to be able to make a number of Principal’s Awards recognising excellence in students’ work.

I thank Mrs Smith, Head of Visual Arts and Mrs Thompson, Head of Design & Technology for overseeing the organisation of this event which is an enormous task in itself and I also thank all staff and students who contributed to its success.

Annual Memorial Mass The annual Memorial Mass was held on Thursday evening of last week. In the Catholic tradition November is the month of All Souls when we remember our loved ones who have gone to their eternal rest. Our annual Memorial Mass allows us to pray for the loved ones of all staff, students, families and friends associated with Loyola College. I thank Fr Gerry Healy SJ for celebrating the Mass. The Mass was followed by supper in the College Function Room.

As we reflect on the significance of November in our Catholic tradition we continue to pray for all our loved ones who have passed from this world that they may be at peace in the embrace of our loving Creator God. We ask our Blessed Mother, Mary to pray for us the living that when our time to leave this world comes that we too may join our loved ones in the presence and joy of the living God.

We also pray for our students as they prepare for their final assessments in the coming weeks that they will strive for excellence in all that they do. May they be inspired by the example of our Patron Ignatius in seeking to give of their best for the greater glory of God.

November Blessing of the Memorial Plaques and Community Memorial Mass On Tuesday, 9 November, Father Gerry Healy S.J. blessed the memorial plaques for Mrs Teresa Schirripa (L:90-17) and Fr Justin King SJ (L:55-59) (L:01-09). Teresa, a former Loyola parent and staff member, held a number of roles including the principal’s personal assistant and general office manager for quite a number of years. Fr Justin King studied at Loyola as part of his training to become a Jesuit priest and was a chaplain to the College for 9 years.

Following the blessing, a memorial mass was held in the chapel and followed by supper in the functions room. Providing this opportunity for people to remember their loved ones, give thanks for their lives, and meet together in a

supportive hospitable setting is an important part of living the ethos of our College.

Year 9 Reflection Day On Wednesday, 7 December all Year 9 students will participate in a Reflection day on Relationships and Sexuality – Respect for Self, respect for others. This day will be facilitated by David and Katie Kobler who run Your Choicez, a company that specializes in delivering Relationship and Sexuality Seminars for young people. The aim of the day will be to help our young people reflect on issues and in the context of their relationships with family, community and God, help them make great choices around their sexuality and instill clarity in relationship decision making.

Our Reflection Days are opportunities for our students to live out the College theme “Accompany, serve, praise”. Accordingly Year 9 students are asked to bring a $5 donation or a gift to support the Loyola Vinnies Christmas present drive or a pair of children’s pyjamas. Their donation will be collected prior to the day to the day in their Religious Education Classes.

Students way wear their sports uniform and it must be noted that this day is compulsory for all students and a medical certificate is required if a student is absent.

Loyola Young Vinnies – Christmas present/Children’s Pyjama drive Each year the Loyola Young Vinnies run a Christmas present/Children’s Pyjama drive. Families can support others in need by leaving a Christmas present for children 12 years and younger in House areas. Presents do not need to be wrapped. The Young Vinnies will do this.

Pyjamas are sent to a women’s refuge.

Prayer Requests Box at St Ignatius Chapel

All are invited to spend some time in prayer at our St. Ignatius Chapel, Old Loyola Building. A Prayer Requests box is placed close to the entrance door of this Chapel with pens and papers to write on. Staff and students are most welcome to write

down their prayer requests, petitions or intentions that they carry in their hearts and wish that the Lord may grant them in His mercy. As St. Paul says in his letter to the Philippians (4:6): “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and

petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.”

You are free to put your name or not when you write down your prayer requests. These prayer requests will be collated and will be sent to the Carmelite cloistered nuns from Goonellabah and Varroville NSW, Christchurch, NZ and Launceston, TAS who promised that they will pray for the prayer requests that they will receive from the College. Today there are over 800 monasteries of Carmelite nuns in

over 90 countries. Their mission is to be a good friend to our Lord: “to pray for the Church, for the Holy Father, bishops, missionaries and especially priests in the local diocese, often struggling under heavy loads as they strive to bring Christ to our world; to pray for the spiritual and temporal needs of all people, that they may know the love of God and be able to live out this love generously in daily life.”

My community, the Pastorelle Sisters and I will also include your prayer requests in our daily prayers.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)

Year 7 Surface Pro Re-imaging This year we will be re-imaging the Year 7 Surface Pro’s from November 20. Letters will be sent out soon to all Year 7 families informing them of the dates students will need to drop off their Surface Pro to ICT. If you still have any concerns after you receive the letter or have not received the letter please do not hesitate to contact Mr Dalla Vecchia or myself.

Year 9 City Experience November 13 - 15 Year 9 City Experience will commence on November 13. It is an excellent opportunity for our students to experience learning outside the classroom. When our Year 9 student arrives home after their days on the program please ask about what they have participated in and how this can help them with their themes and questions. A special thanks to Ms Louise Crowe, Ms Hope Do, Mr Mathew Lee, Mr Chris

Lynch, the Year 9 Religious Education and Science teachers for their preparatory work.

Year 8 to 11 Semester Two examinations The Year 8 to 11 examination individual timetables have been emailed to all students. Year 10 and 11 parents and guardians will have also received a letter outlining the examination procedure, as well as the details for the end of the year. Year 8 and 9 parents and guardians will receive a similar letter prior to the Year 8 and 9 examination period.

The examination period is as follows:

Year 11: November 14 – November 22 Year 10: November 16 – November 22 Year 9: November 29 – December 1 Year 8: December 5 – December 7

N Day (final submission of any late work to avoid an N) A reminder to all students who may not have completed and handed in assessment tasks that there is a final date which is referred to as ‘N day’. If a student does not submit work prior to this date they will not have met the requirements for that unit. The following N dates for each year are as follows:

Ms Suzanne Pola Direct Line: 9433 0233

Page 7: The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon - Loyola College€¦ · This year’s College Play: The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon was performed in the Inigo Theatre over two days at the end

.

Year 9: November 22 Year 8: November 27 Year 7: December 4

It is important for all students to complete work even if it is late, as the work may be part of the examination. It is also good practice to complete what is expected and students can still receive feedback about their standard of work. Good luck to all students in the end of Semester examinations.

Year 10 and 11 Semester Two Examination Resits We will again run Year 11 examination resits for any students who are continuing on in the subject in 2018, and did not achieve the minimum score of 50% for their examination. The Resit Examinations will take place in the week of December 4 which gives the student an extra two weeks to prepare for the examination. Subject teachers will contact any student who has achieved below 50% by email and ask them to meet with the teacher to go over the exam. If a student is hoping to change out of the subject, they will need to bring a permission note from home and meet with Ms. Pola or Mrs. Musgrove to see what subjects are available.

Please note that at Year 10, any student who did not achieve the minimum score of 50% for their examination will also be required to resit that examination, regardless if they are continuing on with that subject in 2018. This practice is slightly different to Year 11, as all Year 10 subjects are semester based and it is the College view, that all Year 10 students should be able to achieve a minimum score of 50% if they have prepared for the examination.

Students and parents will be notified of the Resit Examination schedule as soon as possible but unfortunately it will not be until after the Orientation program, as examination results are not finalised until November 30. Therefore, I encourage Year 10 and 11 students to find out how they have performed in their Semester examinations from their subject teachers and if they have not achieved above 50%, to be proactive to ensure that they have either made appropriate subject changes (at Year 11) or to prepare well for the Resit Examination.

Parents and guardians may contact Ms Staub, the Year 10 – 12 Student Programs Coordinator if further clarification is needed.

2018 Orientation Period Once again we will run an extensive Orientation period at Year 10, 11 and 12. Students will receive a copy of their Orientation period timetable and commence 2018 classes. Please be aware that the teacher or the class grouping that the student has for the Orientation period may not be the 2018 teacher or class, as there are many factors that influence this. However, students will receive their holiday preparation work and they will commence the 2018 course.

FROM HEAD OF HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Wheelchair Basketball On Tuesday October 31 the Year 11 PE classes had Disability and Sport Victoria come in and run a wheelchair basketball session. The students were engrossed in the presenter’s story about losing his legs in a road accident and the challenges of living in a wheelchair, in particular accessing facilities such as sport stadiums, restaurants and public toilets.

After hearing his story and a quick lesson in how to use the wheelchairs, the students were experiencing wheelchair basketball. The challenges of shooting into a 10ft high ring from a wheelchair became apparent very quickly and our upper body strength was clearly lacking by the end.

This was an amazing experience for our students and one that will stick with them for a very long time. Their appreciation for our wheelchair athletes has certainly grown and their understanding of a lack of facilities and competitions for wheelchair athletes has been brought to the forefront of their mind, just in time for their end of year exams.

Long summer nights and exercise With the nights getting longer and the weather warmer, it is a great opportunity to get out and get active as a family. Whether it’s walking the dog together, playing at the local park, kicking the footy, shooting some hoops or simply going for a walk, this is a great opportunity to put all the technology away and talk to each other about the day and the week ahead. Exercise has many benefits and one of the most important ones is creating social connections, so don’t forgot to talk to others while your exercising. Also, don’t forget to factor in exercise into your study timetable in the exam and assessment period. Exercise has been shown to improve academic performance, so don’t forget this easily achievable advantage.

In the interests of keeping parents/guardians informed about privacy issues that may impact on their family members’ daily lives at home, I would like to draw attention to the following concerns in relation to signing up for Cloud services, including email and social media services. One should:

1. Take the time to read the site’s Privacy Policy, as it should describe how the organisation will use personal information and what steps the organisation will take to protect the privacy of personal information;

2. Determine in which jurisdiction(s) personal information will be stored, as this impacts on the level of protection afforded to that information. Specifically:

a. In Australia, as in many other countries, the Australian Privacy Provisions (APP) governs how data is controlled and processed.

b. Some countries have stronger privacy regimes than others. For instance, the European Union and New Zealand afford the strongest protections for personal information. Next comes Australia. Unfortunately the United States, home of Google Inc (Gmail), Apple and Facebook, due to its Patriot Act (anti-terrorism legislation) it does not provide as strong a privacy regime as does the EU, NZ or even Australia. Although Google will ‘self-certify’ under Safe Harbour Principles, there are no guarantees that an Australian’s personal information will be protected to the same level possible if that data were to be stored in Australia.

c. In some cases it may be possible to request that personal information be stored in Australia; both Microsoft and Amazon allow for this for some services.

So when signing up for Cloud services, don’t have your ‘head in the clouds’ in relation to the protection of your private data. Take the time to read up on how the site deals with your privacy: if the organisation does not protect it, then reject it!

Year 8 Italian – Food and Culture As part of the Year 8 Italian unit of work on food and culture the students recently visited the Calabria Club in Bulla. During a day filled with activities and a traditional Italian meal and dessert they were able to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for these two aspects of Italian life.

Year 8 Italian Calabria Club Excursion On Wednesday 08 of November, the year 8 Italian classes set out to the Calabria Club in Bulla.

As we hopped off the bus, we started our first activity which, for our group, was soccer. We got to play on a small field where we could see planes flying overhead, horses trotting in the stables, and hear chickens and turkeys clucking in their coop. After we got sorted into our teams, we played some soccer.

After a short recess break, we had our second activity which was bocce. We were sorted into two teams and then the staff member (taking our activity) rolled a small orange ball into

the middle of the grass. Each person then got another ball, and we had to take turns rolling our ball near the orange ball and the person who got the closest was the winner of that round, and they got a point for their team.

Pasta making was the next activity. The staff member who took that activity mixed a few eggs into a cup of flour and made a dough, and then gave us each some to flatten. Then, each student got to put their dough through the machine a few times to flatten it out even more, and then put it through a different part of the machine to make either fettuccine or spaghetti. She also showed us how to make ravioli, gnocchi and crostoli.

Next we had lunch, which consisted of spiral pasta with tomato sauce and pizza.

Our last activity was tarantella dancing and looking at objects and clothes from old Italy. The tarantella dancing involved running to your partner on the other side of the room, doing some twirls and then running back.

The gelato at the end of the day was delicious, and then it was time to go back to school.

Year 7 and Year 8 ‘Wider Reading’ Challenges During the course of 2017, Year 7 and 8 English students participated in reading programs organised by the Library. These programs encourage students to read more widely than they generally do and to have conversations about books that aren’t part of their required school reading. As part of their English classes, students spent one period a fortnight in the library reading books from the library’s ‘fiction’ and ‘real stories’ collections. At the completion of each book, students would have a discussion about it with library staff, and then it was signed off their challenge list. Both challenges ended on 31st October, and during this past week, winning students and classes celebrated at a morning tea (Year 7) and a lunch (Year 8). Well done to all students who successfully met the challenges!

Year 7 ‘Genre Reading Challenge’ The challenge: read 12 books across different genres. Receive rewards at different levels: ‘Bronze’ (4 books), ‘Silver’ (8 books) and ‘Gold’ (12 books). Duration, Term 1 – 31 October. 27 students reached the Gold level of 12 books and were presented their prize ($20 book voucher from QBD) by our College Principal Mr. Favrin at a ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ themed morning tea in the Library’s Reading Zone.

Year 8 ‘Million Word Challenge’ The challenge, twofold: as a class, read one million words. Furthermore, each student, and their class teacher, must read a minimum of one book each, or risk team

disqualification. Duration, 03 July – 31 October. Two classes met this challenge (reading over 5 million words!) and celebrated together over a pizza lunch (sponsored by the English Faculty) in the Library. Mr. Favrin also attended this function and congratulated the students and their teachers on their fabulous efforts in this team challenge.

The Library staff look forward to offering exciting reading challenges again next year. And, importantly, creating more opportunities to connect with – and get to know - our students through book conversations.
