Introduction• The Brothers Grimm are Jacob and Wilhelm

Grimm, German professors best known for publishing collections of fairy tales

• In 19th century, the Holy Roman Empire had just met its fate, and Germany was an area of hundreds of principalities and small or mid-sized countries

• The major unifying factor for the German people of the time was a common language. There was as yet no significant German literary history

• So part of what motivated the brothers in their writings and in their lives was the desire to help create a German identity

Part I. Life and work

• Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (1785-1863), German philologist, jurist and mythologist, was born at Hanau

• In 1805 he received an invitation to go to Paris, passed a very happy time, strengthening his taste for the literatures of the middle ages by his studies in the Paris libraries

• Wilhelm Carl Grimm (1786-1859) born in Hanau, in 1803 he started studying law at the University of Marburg, one year after his brother Jacob did the same; In 1825, he married Henriette Dorothea Wild


Part I. Life and work

• In 1812, the brothers published a collection of authentic German fairy tales they had gathered in a volume titled as Kinder- und Hausmärchen ("Children's and Household Tales"). They published a second volume in 1814, as well as many further editions during their lifetimes

• Along with the original German works, many originally French tales entered the Grimms collection

• The Grimms rewrote the stories to suit what was considered appropriate for the time, especially when the folk tales often could be quite sexually explicit

Part II. Little Red

• Little Red was told by French peasants in the 14th century; in La finta nonna (The False Grandmother), an early Italian version, the young girl uses her own cunning to beat the wolf in the end

• The earliest known printed version was known as Le Petit Chaperon Rouge; in 1697, by Charles Perrault

• Two separate German versions used by the Grimms: the first by Jeanette Hassenpflug (1791-1860) and the second by Marie Hassenpflug (1788-1856)

• The best known version in the 1857 edition of the brothers’ work

Part II. Little Red

• A village girl deceived into giving a wolf she encountered the information he needed to successfully find her grandmother's house and eat the old woman while at the same time avoiding being noticed by woodcutters working in the nearby forest

• Then he lays a trap for the girl. She ends up eaten by the wolf and there the story ends. The wolf emerges the victor and there is no happy ending

• In the German story, a woodcutter comes to the rescue and cuts the wolf open. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother emerge unharmed

Part III. Snow White

• In the traditional Brothers Grimm version of this tale, Snow White is born to a queen, who dies shortly after giving birth

• The king takes a new wife who is beautiful but very proud. She possesses a magic mirror, to whom she would often ask "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?", and to which the mirror would always reply, "You are“

• But one day when she asks her mirror, it responds, "Queen, you're the fairest where you are, but Snow White is more beautiful by far"


Part III. Snow White

• The Queen orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the woods to be killed; he can’t kill her

• Snow White discovers a tiny cottage in the forest, belonging to seven dwarfs, where she rests

• Three times the Queen disguises herself and visits the dwarfs' cottage to kill Snow White

• Lastly the Queen makes a poison apple, and in the guise of a country woman offers it to Snow White

• She eats the apple and falls into a deep sleep; she is saved by a prince and marries him



Conclusion

• Less well known to the general public outside Germany is the Brothers Grimm's work on a German dictionary still considered as the standard reference for German etymology

• Between 1990 and the 2002 introduction of the euro currency in Germany, the Grimms were depicted on the 1000 Deutsche Mark note—the largest available denomination
