From the Bridge Coordinator’s desk

August is going to be a busy month for bridge at

VBBC! Our charity game for VNA Hospice, chaired

by Jan Ward, was a very nice event with our bridge

players donating 307.00 in memory of long-time

member Pat Soukup.

Yolanda Williamson is the new partnership

chair for the limited games and is eager to begin

receiving calls for partnership help. Pat Finn is a

tough act to follow and did a marvelous job of

rallying the 0-300 players to play in the Swiss team

events and tournaments, both here and away for

many years. Thank you for your energy and

dedication to VBBC, Pat.

Do you need silver points? If so, plan to play every

day beginning the week of August 13! This will be

the start of District 9's Sectional Tournament at

Clubs week which will conclude August 19 with a

STaC Swiss Team game. We also have two North

American Pairs qualifying games which pay ½ red

points.

Other special games in August include:

August 4 - 8-Is-Enough Swiss Team game

August 5 - Club Championship

August 7 - NAP Qualifier - awards ½ red points

August 12 - Charity Swiss Team game

August 13 - 19 - STaC Week

August 22 - Club Championship

August 26 - 8-is-Enough Swiss Team game

August 30 - NAP Qualifier - awards ½ red points

From the president’s desk July has come and gone, and the most exiting

thing that happened to me during the month was

celebrating my wife’s birthday. For the last few

years, her birthday celebration has grown from

one day to about a week with good food and

different area restaurants being the focal point of

the celebration.

As for the business of VBBC for the month, not

much happened. I did read a good book about

duplicate bridge called “The Cardturner” by Louis

Sachar, and recommend you all read it if you

haven’t already.

For those of you wondering why we’re not flying

our flag, the reason is that the pulley mechanism

at the top broke off, and a new one needs to be

found, purchased, and installed, which will

be done. As of now, I’m still working on the

finding portion.

I’ve run out of inconsequential things to comment

on for this letter, so will sign off and leave the

The 2012 World Bridge Federation game held at VBBC

on June 2, was locally won by Mariangela Risso and Jack

Wilson. They competed with over 5,328 pairs playing at

bridge clubs in 36 countries around the world. The 2013

game will be held on June 7 at VBBC.

Director’s Corner

Larry Harris, author of Laws of Duplicate Bridge

Through the Eyes of the Player, has this to say

about Claiming: “The only good thing about a

claim is that the hand is over quicker. Everything

else is bad. Be aware of this and be careful. Many

points are lost over improper or poorly articu-

lated claims.”

In ruling on a contested claim, the director adjudi-

cates the result of the board as equitably as possi-

ble to both sides, but any doubtful points shall be

resolved against the claimer. It’s much safer for

declarer to claim when he/she has already drawn

trump. The bottom line is always to state a line of

play. If an opponent contests the claim, play

ceases and the director should be called.

The Tuesday Open game at the Indian River Shores

Community Center is a lovely setting in which to play

duplicate bridge. Due to the local primary election on

August 14, the community center is unavailable so the

game will not be held on that date. For all other

Tuesdays game time is 12:45.
