POSITIVE ROLE MODEL
I was very pleased and proud to receive a message from a Bega
resident last week. They rang to say that a Bermagui Public School
student (recognisable by the black and yellow bumblebee shirt) had
walked passed him in a shop, then returned to help retrieve
something out of his reach. He said that he is in a wheelchair and was
very appreciative of the act of kindness. Even more pleasing for me
was that we have so many wonderful students I had to investigate to
determine the student. Well done Ocean, your family and school are
very proud.
SPORT
Congratulations to our school netball team on their victory last
Thursday against Bega Valley Public School. It was great to share in
their excitement back at school and we look forward to the next round
of the state knockout against Merimbula Public School next week.
In another busy week of sport, we have had the soccer team play
Merimbula today, our softballers will play Pambula on Thursday and
our Girls Paul Kelly Cup AFL team play in the area finals on Friday. I
wish all the teams good luck and a reminder to always display
exemplary sportsmanship when representing our school. A big thank
you to all the teachers and parent helpers organising and the parents
for assisting with travel to enable our students to have these
opportunities.
VOICE TREATY TRUTH
Mrs Loughran and Mrs Cathor are both at Professional Learning
today provided by the NSW AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative
Group) as a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and
Cultures cross-curriculum priority. The Australian Curriculum is
working towards addressing two distinct needs in Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander education:
• that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are able to see
themselves, their identities and their cultures reflected in the
curriculum of each of the learning areas, can fully participate in the
curriculum and can build their self-esteem
• that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and
Cultures cross-curriculum priority is designed for all students to
engage in reconciliation, respect and recognition of the world’s
oldest continuous living cultures.
It is great to have the NSW AECG provide this opportunity to further
develop our teachers in the local area.

Last Friday morning, following the assembly, all
students and teachers engaged in the focus
lesson around expected behaviours in the Top
Playground. This will remain our priority for the
next two weeks. Students who demonstrate the
expectations of Respectful, Responsible and
Safe will be rewarded with PBL tokens to
reinforce the appropriate behaviour.
School NewsLITERACY NEWS
This week, students in Years 1-6 will be focussing on the graphemes ai
(snail), ay (hay), a_e (cake) and a (lady).
GREAT GAME - BANANASAim of the game
Work together to learn spelling words.
1. Choose a List Word and ask your child to say the word’s first letter.
2. Take turns asking your child to say the next letter in the word. If they
say the wrong letter, they miss a turn.
3. After the last letter of the word is given, the next person says,
‘Bananas!’ and scores a point.
4. Choose another List Word for the next person to begin spelling.
5. The winner is the person with the most points after the words have
been spelt.

2019 PREMIER’S READING
CHALLENGE
The challenge aims to encourage the love of
reading in students and enable them to
experience quality literature. It is not a
competition but simply a challenge to each
student to read, to read more and to read more
widely. The 2019 Challenge started on
Monday, 4 March and closes on the 30 of
August (midnight) for students. Book lists of
recommended books can be found on the
Premier Reading Challenge website or check
with Mrs Cathor. Students can go to the PRC website homepage, click on ‘Logon’ on the
menu using the Department of Education
username and password. If you have any
difficulties with internet access, students can
log their books on sheets from the library. Mrs
Cathor will assist them to log the books at
school. Students who complete the challenge are presented with a Premier’s certificate.
Enjoy the world of books, read lots and
read often!
Parliament News
Soft Plastics
Class 3/4 Murriyirras submitted a Bill at Parliament
two weeks ago for students to recycle their soft
plastics which can be made into outdoor seats for our
school.
Pictured left is a copy of the acceptable soft plastics
that REDcycle collect. They are the company who
collect the plastic from Coles and Woolworths to be
sent to REPLAS who then make the playground
furniture.
Steve has kindly put two yellow bins out in the
playground for children to put their soft plastics into.
Below are links to both REPLAS and REDcycle.

BERMAGUI ALL ABILITIES PLAYGROUND
‘Have Your Say’
The Bermagui All Abilities Playground project is about to start and we need
your feedback as to the location of this new facility.
The first decision we need to know from you is the location of the playground.
Would you like it to replace EITHER the existing playground at Apex Park
(Campbell’s Cove/Saltwater Park) or replace the existing playground located at
Dickinson Park?
Based on the outcome of this ‘Have Your Say’ poll the playground which is not
the preferred location, will remain as is.
Bega Valley Shire Council (BVSC) is now officially moving forward on the
project with the publishing of the project page on the Council website:
https://www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au/cp_themes/default/page.asp?p=DOC-PTM-
54-48-20
And the ‘Have Your Say’ for the location is now open and will run for the next
two weeks:

Paper voting slips are available at Bermagui Library for those who don't have
access to the online poll.
