LMC LF Polled Olympia is a smooth polled future donor that has MAMA COW written all over her. She is sired by the BEEF MACHINE, LMC Polled Aussie and is out of a V8 cow sired by +V8 901/4 and a +JDH Karu daughter – two of the all time great sires of the breed. LMC Polled Beatriz 70/4 is a one month old fancy big boned, big humped double polled baby doll sired by Polled Aussie and our 254 cow which is another of our top cows that has produced five super heifers in a row. She has 9 generations of polled breeding. We own two of her best with Kelly Barnard and Mike England. This is a top show and mama cow prospect.

“Donna” still looks good and is producing some of our best calves every year. She was the first polled cow we bought. She was produced by the Schneiders which is why we named her “Donna”. She is Polled Aussie’s dam and is one of our top cows. She goes back to the Register of Renown +V8 2121/3, +JJ 276 (National Champion) and +V8 700/3.

AUSSIELMC PoLLEd

is a herd bull that could represent the Breed’s Standard of Excellence. He is a BEEF MACHINE that is loaded with muscle, correctness, balance, breed character, pedigree with a clean sheath, plenty of bone and is double polled. We own him with EL Salinas Ranch owned by Beto Salinas. Polled Aussie is sired by LMC WFF Pistolero and our Donna donor who has produced lots of good ones for us. Polled Aussie may be the best kept secret in the Brahman business.

We gave our good friend Donna Schneider a flush out of “Donna” last year when she was in

the hospital hoping she would get a full sib bull calf to LMC Polled Aussie who

LMC Polled Rock as a calf with his mama who is one of LMC's top producing cows. He won his class in Houston the only time he was shown and has developed into a good looking proven herd sire. He is sired by LMC WFF Pistolero and a V8 "Rock" daughter of the many times champion Miss V8 38/6, one of +Mr. V8 287/5 "Superstroke" winningest daughters.

Miss GEL Queen of Hearts is a fall born (10/15/2013) baby doll sired by an own son of + JDH MR Elmo Manso and a JDH Mr. Massey Manso cow. Miss Double A 436/6 is one of several Double A and V8 cows that GEL (Guerra, England & Louie) bought from Beto Salinas last year during the drought. CONGRATULATIONS to Adriana de los Santos for her 2014 RGV Show Grand Champion Brahman steer bred by Beto Salinas. Mike England, Louie Flores and La Muñeca bought a great set of Double A and V8 cows from Beto last year during the drought and this calf was on them. They are a very uniform and functional set of females that are being bred to LMC Polled Rock. The RGV Brahman Steer Show continues to grow and has created lots of good will for the breed in just two shows with the best yet to come.

coloMbIA The 67th Cebu National Show will be held in Bogota - Cundinamarca, Colombia from July 16th until July 20th. There will be a number of activities to attend, such as a field day, cattle judging and dairy contests designed for children and young people, as well as the National Show and cattle auctions. The Brahman judging will begin on the 17th of July starting with the females and will finish with the bulls by the 19th of July. The Brahman cattle will be judged by a three man panel consisting of Fabio Jaramillo, Luis Fernando Dominguez and Luis Miguel Villa.

On March 28, 2014, over 200 people were in attendance during the LMC $ellabration weekend to enjoy the $10,000 LMC Jackpot, $20,000 LMC $ellabration Show and fine South Texas hospitality from La Muneca Cattle Co.

Brahman enthusiasts enjoyed a great private treaty offering from several LMC $ellabration sponsors.

Once again the food was one of the many highlights of the weekend and was prepared by Chorizo de San Manuel.

The weekend kicked off on Friday afternoon with the $10,000 La Muneca Jackpot Show. Joelynn Rathmann of Brenham, Texas judged the LMC Jackpot Showmanship Show that saw 29 exhibitors compete for $5,000 in premiums and banners.

The Grand Champion Brahman Female in both the Jackpot show as well as the $ellabration show was sired by LMC Apollo 265/9 and was exhibited by Leandra Flores who won two banners and $900 between the two shows.

Sister Citieshouston and Tampico -Houston, Texas and Tampico, Mexico have been known to be

“sister cities” for years. March 26, 2014 was commemorated as the Day of Houston - Tampico by Houston mayor, Anisse Parker.

The mayor of Tampico, Gustavo Torres Salinas, was in Houston during the commemoration on a working visit.

“I am excited and grateful for this honor for our city”, said Torres Salinas. “It is proof of the interest of our governments in further strengthening the ties between our two cities.”

As part of the working visit Torres Salinas, along with his council members, held roundtable discussions with business leaders of Houston.

The meeting was attended by businessmen from the energy industry, medical field, tourism, as well as the livestock industry.

In attendance representing the livestock industry were Dinah Weil, Bill Hudgins and ABBA recording secretary Armelinda Ibarra. Victoria Lambert of The Brahman Journal had been invited while in Tampico earlier in the month as she

attended the Tropical Livestock Congress.

Among the issues addressed in the working meeting were expanded flights between Houston and Tampico, increasing student exchange in the medical field and promoting attendance for next year’s Tropical Livestock Congress and National Cebu Show.

“We had a great event this year and look forward to an even better event next year,” said AMCC President Erik Blankenship. “The convention center in Tampico is really a wonderful venue for this type of event.”

Staff from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo discussed the importance of the cattle exhibits at the rodeo and how the international visitors impact the rodeo and the Houston economy.

“We look forward to attending the Tropical Congress in Tampico next year”, said Armelinda Ibarra. “The ABBA and its members have always enjoyed visiting Tampico and I am sure we will have a congregation with us next year for the event.”

La Muneca Cattle Co. of Linn, TX had their second online sale on March 28 - April 1. Most of the cattle were on display during the LMC $ellabration $20,000 Jr. Show III. There was lots of bidding on the young multi breed offerings. A special donation lot of HR Powerhouse semen donated by Nick Goodrich sold for $450 to the Santos Escobar Family with 100% of the proceeds donated to the American Junior Simbrah Round Up Scholarship Fund. Baring Cattle Co. bought two units on the popular LMC EF JW Black for $1,500 apiece. Overall 32 units of Simbrah and Simbravieh semen averaged $252 per unit.

The top selling lot was LMC BBS Andrea, a purebred Simbrah baby doll consigned by the Boening Bros. & La Muneca selling 1/3 interest for $9,000 to La Reina Cattle Co. from Poolville, TX. The 2nd top seller was her full sister selling for $7,300 to Winding Oaks Ranch from Alleyton, TX. Overall eight Simbrah females averaged $4,513.

The top selling Brahman female was ECC MS Sherri K Crickett consigned by England Cattle Co. with 1/2 interest selling for $8,000 to Kelly Barnard from Kansas.

The top selling steer prospect was a Simbravieh calf selling for $4,000 to the Kelly Stretcher family from Mt. Vernon. The

2nd top selling steer was a Polled Brahman selling for $3,100 to the Jamie Flores Family from Linn, TX. Overall two show steer prospects averaged $3,550.

The top selling Simbrah bull was 1/2 interest in the Pick of the LMC 6G Red Rock sons selling for $5,400 to Kendall Girault from McAllen, TX. The 2nd top selling Simbrah bull was the many times champion R.JPR Big Blue consigned by KJ Cattle and selling for $5,000 to 4C Ranch from Edinburg, TX. Overall four Simbrah bulls averaged $4,000.

The top selling Simbravieh lot was 1/2 interest in the LMC herd selling for $5,000 to the Benjamin Hill family. The 2nd top selling Simbravieh was 1/2 interest in LMC Audrey selling for #,900 to Mi Barba from Rosharon, TX. The deer hunt was bought by long time repeat buyers, the Tom Zulim family for $5,000. The sale grossed $92,950 on 24 lots for a $3,873 average.

La Muneca plans to have several online sales in 2014 with LMC GenePLUS Online Sale III planned for May 3-6 with one of the sale highlights being the Pick of the LMC WFC Dream Girl x LMC Rhino litter of five baby doll heifers.

it was the type of message you never want to receive. one that makes you say,

“what the heck am i going to do now.”What was the message?

First, some background information is necessary. It was the afternoon of Friday, January 17. I was preparing final details for our Agricultural Leadership Development Program trip to Central America.

I’m the director of the leadership programs for the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. Our Agricultural Leadership Development Program is for ranchers, farmers, foresters, natural resources and agribusiness people. They spend 45 days over a two-year period with us doing intensive training to take leadership roles within their industries and communities.

January is a very busy month for us because we begin a new class and complete another one with our international trip. Class XIII was preparing for a trip to Central America beginning on Wednesday, January 22.

Now back to the message. One of my contacts in Panama wouldn’t be able to join us during our trip and therefore our cattle tour was cancelled.

A flurry of thoughts raced through my mind, and quite frankly most of them were emotional. Then I remember something one of our Class XIV members mentioned, Clint Galiano. He is a member of our new group and has worked in the cattle industry through the family farm and now works for “The Brahman Journal.” He offered to help with any contacts during our international trip for his class.

I sent him a note and by that evening I was talking to Carl Lambert with The Brahman Journal. Carl explained to me that he knew the area we were visiting and had a producer in mind. The next day I received a confirmation for us to visit a ranch in the Santiago area and I should contact the rancher, Rodrigo Spiegel. After corresponding by e-mail we had our visit set up before we left the states.

So on Saturday, January 25 we had our ranch tour and Rodrigo was such a gracious host. We toured the Canadero San Marcos Ranch which is owned and operated by his family. It was obvious from the moment we got off our bus that it was a top flight operation.

“Our first stop was on a valley-looking beautiful landscape where some nice fleshy Grey Brahman cows were grazing, some up to the knee pastures,” said Class XIII member Dr. Guillermo Scaglia, a beef cattle researcher for the LSU AgCenter. “We also had a chance to look at a Red Brahman herd that looked as good as the previous one, and again, grazing on some tall deep-green pastures.”

During the visit our group learned that the ranch is predominantly focused on genetics with bulls. Most of their pure bred bulls are sold to ranches in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico.

“One word – overwhelming,” said Class XIII member Joey Register, a beef and poultry producer from Logansport, Louisiana. “I was really fascinated with the genetics. The size and frame structure of their cattle was shocking to me.”

Rodrigo answered about an hour’s worth of questions from the class. He informed us that if we had more time we could see a larger operation an hour north of the city. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time.

In the end, everyone was very impressed with what they saw at the ranch.

“I’m a big proponent of being a grass farmer,” said Register. “I was really impressed with their grazing operation.”

“Their business is genetics and they have done a great job of ‘recruiting’ the best possible bulls and/or semen from high quality animals,” said Scaglia. “Through the years they have improved their genetics and according to him, it has paid off.”

I’ve had the great fortune to visit a lot of agricultural operations in many countries. I feel privileged to have met Rodrigo and look forward to seeing and learning from him again in the future.

ExcellenceExcellenceBrahman breeders take pride in providing excellence images of their cattle. A high quality photo helps showcase the strengths of your animal and serves as a lasting visual image of the animal’s quality and conformation. While we all enjoy seeing phenomenal images, sometimes achieving that image isn’t as easy as you think. The recipe for success in livestock photography includes a good camera + good natural light + good background + good posing. Here are some tips for helping Brahman breeders achieve that stellar image.

Do You need an expensive camera?It is often said, ‘the best camera is the

one that you have with you’. Sometimes, the only camera you have with you

is your camera phone, and in that case, that’s the best camera

you have available. If a camera phone is the only camera you have

available, shoot with HDR selected. Apps such as VSCOCam and PicTapGo can aid in photo editing from a camera phone.

Point and shoot cameras are mid-level

cameras that work for a lot of producers. They are handy, and the mega pixels are very comparable to DSLR. The disadvantage to using a point and shoot camera is that they offer limited focal length due to

one fixed lens on camera.

A DSLR camera is the highest-end camera one can buy

for livestock photography, however are more expensive, and require

more equipment. Before purchasing a DSLR camera, one should choose their

preferred brand (Canon or Nikon) and understand that lenses and accessories

are not exchangeable between brands. Lenses for DSLR cameras are purchased separately and increase the focal length

capability of the camera, allowing you to shoot quality photos from greater distances. This can be of benefit when picturing animals in large pastures, where the photographer may not be able to get as close to the animals as ideally preferred.

Luke and Catherine Neumayr, of Luke and Cat Photography recommended the following cameras by skill level and budget. For beginners, a Canon Digital Rebel T3i or Nikon D5100 are available for $600 to $800. Mid level photographers should consider a Canon 70D or Nikon D7100, both around $1200. Advanced, professional users typically purchase cameras like the Canon 5D Mark III or Nikon D800, both above $3000.

The right set-up / picture penOnce a producer has their equipment

selected, the next step is to create an efficient photography environment. Creating a picture-pen for photography purposes can greatly improve this process, especially when shooting large groups of cattle. The picture pen should be planted with grass, which creates a good foundation for the animal. During the summer months or drought, producers can water the small picture pen area so that a green grassy foundation is always available.

If taking pictures in a pasture setting, allow time for the animals to adjust to your presence. Initially, your cattle may move away from the photographer, then naturally be drawn to the photographer out of curiosity. Patience is the key. If possible, start visiting the animals in the pasture about a week prior to when you want to take the picture to allow them to get used to your presence on days other than the given photo day. Luring animals with feed or hay is not recommended; ultimately the result will have the animals focusing on eating, rather than posing.

Next, look for a place with a clean background, which is ideally a pasture setting with a clear blue sky. Avoid telephone poles, cluttered fence lines and equipment in backgrounds. Also, take into consideration

the color of the subject you are picturing. A contrasting background makes an object stand out. For example, you wouldn’t want to picture a grey Brahman heifer in front of a white barn, or a red Brahman heifer in front of a red barn. Avoid photographing in dirt lots when at all possible.

Timing and sunlight are important considerations before attempting a photo shoot. The best results are usually achieved in early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is not quite as bright and there are not as many shadows. Keep in mind to always shoot with the sun at your back. Pay attention to where shadows may fall in the photograph; avoid allowing shadows to overcast a subject.

The animal’s positionWhen picturing Brahman cattle, the

photographer should note the lighting, background, then focus on the animal’s correct feet placement, body placement, straight topline, and correct head carriage.

First, try to allow the animal to ‘walk into’ the position, as this will cause the least stress and handling. If that doesn’t work, begin moving individual feet, starting with the front feet. The front feet should be lined up with the shoulder, and slightly offset so that both front feet are visible. The front feet should be slightly higher than the back feet (positioned uphill). If picturing haltered cattle, build a slight mound of dirt to create an incline for the front feet placement. Next, work the back feet. The back feet should be scissored, with the photographer’s side back foot slightly extended.

Finally, once the animal is set, get the ears. Both ears should be facing forward, and visible, making the animal appear in an alert but docile position.

The photography Team A great photography team can make

the process run a lot smoother, and usually include an attention getter, pusher, and handler.

getter is also responsible for getting the ears forward on the animal. A variety of tools from mirrors and noisemakers to pom-poms can assist with ear-getting, but many times simply making an animal noise will get the job done.

The pusher is the person who moves the animal for the photographer. If your team is limited, the photographer sometimes has to double as the pusher. Sorting sticks or show sticks are helpful in gently pushing animals. The pusher should first determine the flight zone of each animal, then work to gently move the animal in slow movement to assist the photographer.

If photographing animals at halter, a handler is needed. The handler will set up the animal based on the photographer’s instruction. As a photographer, remember to instruct the handler to step as far out of the camera frame as possible, as he will typically be edited out of the photo. When photographing haltered cattle, another gentle animal can be a very useful tool to serve as a buddy. The buddy animal keeps the subject company and draws their attention as well.

The photographer’s positionThe photographer should be positioned

at the center, or slightly off the hip of the animal. Photographers should have their camera at or below the animal’s belly. This angle makes the animal appear larger and proportionate; thus the reason most livestock photographers shoot photos while on their knees. Place yourself at the center to the hip of the animal, never towards the front. Back up at least ten feet, allowing the entire subject into the frame and highlighting outstanding qualities more effectively.

Be ready to catch The Image Producers should constantly be

building their image database of your most prominent animals, as well as scenic photos. Keep your camera with you at all times and be on the lookout for possible photo opportunities such as pasture sunsets, newborn calves, hay meadows, farm signs, and more. If you capture some of these special moments, consider offering the photos to publications like The Brahman Journal or the ABBA to use to help in the publicity and advocacy of animal agriculture. The opportunity to have a photograph from your ranch featured on the cover in your breed publication or by others on Facebook is worth just as much, if not more, than a paid advertisement. If you are setting a goal of having a magazine cover shot, remember that vertical photos usually work better than horizontal photos. Include lots of sky or grass so that designers can have space for the magazine name and copy.

Do You need a professional?The debate continues of whether a

producer should take their own photos and or hire professionals. A practical recommendation is to hire a professional for the most important photographs such as sale photos, herd sire photos, and donor pictures. For the day-to-day photography needs, a producer may choose to invest in a high quality camera and have the ability to capture these images on their own.

Regardless of the size or goal of your operation, much greater results will be archived by spending the time required to capture high quality photographs of your livestock. Lasting, beautiful images are worth the effort.

Photographers should cull their photographs just as hard as they would cull their animals. When selecting your photos, immediately cull pictures with

any of these problems:• Theearsaren’tgoingforward.• Any part of the animal’s body is cut

off, i.e. the tip of the nose is cut off, the bottom of the hooves are cut off.

• Thephotoisoutoffocus.• Thetailisinmidairorswinging.• Youcan’tseeallfourfeet.

An ideal setting for a livestock photo includes good lighting, a good

background, an animal with all four feet visible, positioned slightly uphill, with

both ears forward and visible.

The 27th Annual National F-1 and Brahman Female sale held on March 22, 2014 in Caldwell, Texas reported excellent sale results grossing over one million in sales. This event is sponsored each year by the ABBA and the Texas Brahman Association. It has proven important in both the marketing and promotion of certified F-1 Brahman cattle.

This year the sale showcased over 500 head of Golden Certified, Certified F-1, F-1 Plus, registered Brahman and purebred Brahman females, as well as a select group of registered Brahman and Hereford bulls.

Pre-sale activities began Friday at the Caldwell Livestock Commission with the judging and selection of champion F-1 females. Consignments were able to be viewed upon completion of the judging and then participants were treated to a steak dinner sponsored and prepared by Graham Land & Cattle Company.

This year’s sale was dedicated to Glen and Rosalie Richardson (pictured below).They have been longtime members and promoters of the ABBA F-1 Certification program. The couple, along with their grandson Clay, have operated their ranch for 6 generations.

ABBA Vice President J.D. Sartwelle, Jr. presented the Richardson’s with a special award honoring their many years of devotion and service to the industry.

John Malazzo, of John Malazzo Farms, Caldwell, Texas won both the Champion Cow-Calf Pairs and the Champion Exposed Females.

“In my opinion, the National F-1 sale had the best quality cattle I have seen here in several years,” said John Malazzo. “Anytime you can win a show like this one, it is truly a blessing. Luck must have something to do with it too, as I saw many high quality pens of F-1 cattle that could have won.”

The F-1 Certification Program is a service offered by the ABBA to give proper recognition and new value dimensions to the Brahman F-1 female. Certification serves the same purpose as registration papers issued by purebred registries for animals within their own breed. The strong merit-based program provides registered cattle with documented parentage that helps to ensure the genetic purity needed to achieve maximum hybrid vigor.

Neil Potter graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Animal Science. Soon after college he started to work with Cia, Agricola de Guatemala (Chiquita Banana) in the Livestock Division as a ranch manager and later as the assistant head of the department.

Potter has been involved in the Brahman cattle business almost all his life and is now retired after breeding Brahmans for close to 40 years. Potter is also a judge and has judged shows in the U.S., Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Dominican Republic, as he has been an approved ABBA judge.

Neil Potter will be awarded this honor later this year and The Brahman Journal will have an article with more on his life and involvement with Brahman cattle.

In my position as a Livestock Specialist I get a lot of opportunities to talk about or give presentations on bull selection and management to commercial cattle producers and purebred breeders. I generally like to ask what is the purpose of the bull and most of the time the response is “to get the cows bred”.

My reply to that is that any fertile and willing bull can breed cows so don’t spend a lot of time or money on finding one. The real purpose of a bull is to improve the genetics of your cowherd, regardless if you are in the commercial or purebred side of the industry. To find the right bull you need to know what your breeding goals and objectives are, where your cowherd does and doesn’t excel, and what you need in a bull to begin to fix it.

Unlike a cow which is responsible for only one calf per year (and sometimes less than that), the bull is responsible for as many calves as cows that are assigned to him. This “breeding or mating ratio” should be higher for older more experienced bulls and lower for younger and less experienced bulls. In fact, very young bulls (if they have passed their breeding soundness examination) can be assigned a small number of cows (usually up to their age in months) to breed.

Breeding bulls at this young age will not hurt them and will provide some progeny data to improve the accuracy of their EPD at a younger age. Of course the breeding ratio can depend on how open or brushy (woody) a pasture is or how large a pasture might be. When I was a kid it was a practice in the big brushy pastures down here to drop mature bulls (3-5 year olds) off at watering holes or windmills and they would check heat and breed cows when they came in for a drink!

Because a bull is responsible for producing several calves we can be much more selective of him than we can the general cowherd. In most cowherds a portion of the cows will perform below average for one or more traits (weight of calves weaned for example) which slows genetic improvement. Because the breeding ratio of cows to bulls can be 20-30 or more cows to 1 bull we can choose bulls that are often well above the average of our herd and breed. The key is to find bulls that are above average in all the traits that you are interested in, not just one or a few. Selection in one trait while ignoring others can get you into some real trouble. The other important key is that “extreme” really depends on the trait under consideration. If

you have underperformance in your cowherd in a given trait, it won’t hurt to be a little extreme in choosing a bull to fix it.

I don’t mean to imply that selection for any trait should be for continuous increase. In growth traits that would (and has) gotten some folks in a bind. We need to decide which traits we are interested in improving and set a level of performance that we consider them sufficiently improved. In other words, selection for improvement in a trait should have a target at which selection to improve the trait ceases and selection to maintain it begins.

In selecting bulls, in fact in selecting any cattle, I still think the physical appearance of the animal is important. It can tell you about structural correctness (beginning at the feet and moving up), it can ascertain soundness by watching an animal walk, and it can show you physical attributes of size, muscling, reproduction and maternal ability. Of course on older animals the management can have a large effect on some of these traits but still I think it is very important to “take a look”. Next I think a good set of accurate performance records is important. In some cases it just shows that the breeder is interested in improving his herd. I understand that records can be manipulated and that some measures are “guesstimated” but the reality is that most bull breeders collect accurate and timely records so that their bulls perform as well as they look.

Which records you are interested in will depend on what traits you are interested in improving or maintaining (and you need to consider your environment when doing that). For many breeds, there are not a great deal of EPDs except for growth and some carcass traits but I expect with the widespread use of whole-herd reporting this will change in a few years. I remember when I was the performance director of a breed association in the late 70s and early 80s many breeders were very interested in filling out the records of their cattle. Good records collected carefully over time can tell you a lot about your cowherd. The addition of genomic data to EPD will enhance the accuracy of the EPD, especially in young bulls. This is important since it costs time and money to evaluate young bulls well enough that you feel comfortable in trusting their EPD to breed them to a lot of cows. Using young bulls on a few cows and collecting genomic information on them will reduce the amount of time and the cost of getting them accurately evaluated so that they can be used effectively.

In addition to physical soundness, records and EPD, it is important that your choice has passed a breeding soundness examination (BSE) conducted by a veterinarian. The procedure has been used since the 1950s but less than 50% of beef bulls are tested annually. The veterinarian collects a semen sample, usually using an electro ejaculator, and evaluates it under a microscope. They should also stain it to look for abnormalities. The veterinarian should also palpate the accessory glands via the rectum and also measure scrotal circumference. In young bulls (less than 2 years of age), scrotal circumference is much more important than in older bulls. Research conducted by Brinks in 1971 indicated that young bulls with larger scrotal circumferences had daughters that reached puberty at a slightly earlier age. Since reproduction is a difficult trait to select for (mostly because we measure it as an all or nothing trait), it is useful to select to decrease age at puberty in heifers. However, it has its limits (no one wants huge scrotal sacs on young bulls) and it is largely meaningless in older bulls except that larger scrotal circumferences mean greater storage volume. The testicles should be of similar size and shape as well and should not be swollen or damaged.

Even if a bull has passed its BSE, it does not mean that he will get your cows bred. Research has shown that often one bull breeds most of the cows in a multi-sire breeding herd. Spend a little time watching the bulls work your cowherd during breeding season. On any given day about 5% of your cows should be in heat and the bulls should be actively checking and breeding them. If any bull appears to have difficulty he needs to be removed and checked out. Over prolonged breeding seasons or where the breeding ratio is high (many more cows than bulls) a bull can get thin. In order to protect your investment and to ensure a high calf crop, you might consider supplementing him.

Bulls should be more than “cow fresheners” and need to be selected with care and managed appropriately to ensure good productive lives and high calf crops of genetically superior calves.

The Deep South Sale took place in Hattiesburg, Mississippi with over 400 people from 12 states attending and buyers from 9 states.

The two high selling Silent Auction items at the Deep South Sale were a cedar chest which sold for $850 and an ad in The Brahman Journal, which sold for $800.

“We are very excited to have the champion pen of open heifers at the Deep South sale for the second year in a row,” said Ken Venable of V Cross Ranch, “I would like to thank all the buyers and prospective buyers for their participation and interest.”

“The Deep South group does a tremendous job of putting on the sale year after year,” said Bobby Davis about winning the Champion pen of bred heifers. “It was a great honor that they picked my cattle this year.”

“This was the first time I have competed in this sort of competition,” said Jason Jones. “It was really an honor to have my cattle chosen for champion F-1 Pairs.”

For more than 30 years, the American Brahman Breeders Association’s F-1 Certification Program has verified more than 85,000 females as carrying the Brahman influence.

Demand for Golden Certified and Certified Brahman F-1 females was documented once again this spring at female sales throughout the southeast. Results from 2014 spring sales show that Golden Certified Brahman F-1 females earned a premium of $320 per head compared to all other females sold of all breeds. Certified Brahman F-1 females averaged a premium of $209 per head compared to non-certified commercial females.

Robbie Hamilton of H&M Cattle Company in Wharton, Texas has been in the cattle industry for more than 40 years and a member of the ABBA F-1 Certification Program since its inception in 1979. “Golden Certified F-1’s bring a premium and because of their superior hybrid vigour, there is always a demand for them,” he says. “It’s great money and through the years I have been able to gain a following for my Golden Certified F-1s.”

The results from the ABBA Golden Certified F-1 Females continuously give breeder and buyers confidence in their cattle. Hamilton says. “I’m a believer in the program as are many others. I think the future is ideal for the production of F-1 females as there will always be a demand that cannot be filled!” As premiums and demands continue to rise, the Golden Certified and Certified F-1 Program proves itself superior in the beef industry.

This data shows that buyers are willing to pay a premium for ABBA program F-1 females for their documented parentage, which provides assurance of longevity, maternal ability, adaptability, and efficiency.

Three years ago, I took our neighbor and good friend Sam Sparks to visit my ole buddy Carlos X. Guerra shop-ping for a good Brahman herd bull. We found and liked LMC Polled Sambo. Sam bought him and he has devel-oped into a top herd sire. I got caught up in the excite-ment that day and ended up in the purebred business. I have watched LMC Polled Sambo’s dam, “Samantha” develop into one of the most prominent cow families in the breed.

As we assembled our herd, we selected a royally bred cow from the Ken Stone herd to try and breed a herd bull out of. She is a +Cross Fire daughter with such breed greats as +JDH Karu Manso, (=)JDH Prescott Manso, +JDH Remington Manso and +BNA Double Take in her pedigree. We THANK Sam for allowing us to breed her to LMC Polled Sambo. The rest is history.

ECC Polled Caporal is the best bull we have ever raised. He has the best bone to sheath ratio we have seen. He is very correct, big boned, heavy muscled and super eye appealing. Everyone at the recent RGV Brahman Camara-derie party really liked him. We appreciate everyone who supported our RGV Brahman & F-1 Association Show-

RIO GRANDE vALLEy BRAHMAN & F-1 ASSOCIATION NEWS

During the 2014 Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, the Rio Grande Valley Brahman & F-1 Association hosted its annual silent auction fundraiser. The auction was a great success, raising $6,035 on donated items. The top sellers were a John Deere Patio Cooler donated by La Sarra Ranch and purchased by The Brahman Journal, a 20 qt. K-2 Cooler full of mystery goodies donated by Louie Flores and purchased by the Michael Joyce family, as well as other donations of halters, hay, pens, jewelry and semen on top Brahman bulls.

In addition to the silent auction, the RGVBA raffled a registered Brahman heifer that was donated by the Israel Davila family (pictured below). There were fifty-two chances sold at $100.00 a chance and the winner of

the heifer was the Newt Huffman family with La Reina Ranch.

It was a great week for the association raising a total of $11,235. The proceeds will go towards Brahman steer and heifer premiums, as well as scholarships for RGV youth, showing Brahman cattle.

The Triple L Ranch Black Hereford sale held March 8 in Alvarado, Texas was a big success.

Among the lots sold was a special donation heifer. This futurity heifer was donated in memory of Perry Calvin who lost his life as a first responder in the West, Texas fire last year. The futurity heifer was donated by Triple L Ranch. Donations from Tammy and Bill Kreifels, Dimitri Mataragas, Perry Corder, Bobby, Billy, and Jared Lide of $5,000 were added to the winning bid. The sale of this heifer raised $17,000 for Calvin’s family.

The donation heifer, Calvin C42, sold to Danny Smithson, J Bar B and K Bart T for $12,000.
