Theo is from Duiwelskloof in the Limpopo Province. Theo’s dedication to the breed is obvious in his involvement with the Brahman Society of South Africa. He served on the Board of Directors for 12 years also as Vice President. He represented South Africa as President at the World Brahman Congress in Cartagena Columbia in 1986. He was instrumental in establishing the World Brahman Federation at that Congress. He represented the Brahman Breed at the South African Stud (Herd) Book Society. Theo is a Brahman Breed Judge and a beef and Dual Purpose Interbreed Judge. He has judged Brahmans and beef breeds all over the world, national shows in Havan, Cuba, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. He was invited by the Kenyan Boran Breeder’s Society to do training courses and judge Boran cattle in Kenya and Angoni cattle in Zambia. He has judged the Interbreed and Gold Cup at the Rand Show (Johannesburg) and the Royal Show (Pietermaritzburg).

Theo bought his first 3 Brahman cows and calves from John Warren, AP Ranch bloodlines in 1969, then the Marapoen and Etle Studs. He used the best available imported semen to improve his herd, he also had success with bulls from Warren and Sisal Studs. His love of Brahmans encouraged him to extend his herd to Red Brahmans, mainly Cherokee and Henry Clay Koontz bloodlines. The present herd of 600 Grey and Red females mainly supplies breeding material for commercial cattle breeders in Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Theo was the Chairman of the Training Committee for many years and has conducted numerous training courses. Every year a judge’s seminar is held where the judge’s policy is discussed and adopted to the current beef market requirements. Theo initiated and wrote the first ever Training Manual for Brahman Judges – the BRADEX System to use measurements in judging, etc. Theo has been a judge for over 30 years.

The name Clive Gardner is renowned amongst Brahman Breeders in Southern Africa. Clive had distinguished himself not only for his skill as an auctioneer, but also for his incredible knowledge regarding the South African Brahman population, as well as Brahman pedigrees and genetics.

Starting his career more than 35 years ago, Clive served with the most renowned auction companies selling Livestock and Seedstock. He started his career at Vleissentraal, and then moved on to S. V. M. who later became Karoo Ochse. Many Elite sales were conducted by Clive.

One of his sales “The Showcase Sale”, back in October 1984 turned out to be a turning point for the Grey Brahmans in South Africa. This sale was conducted for the well-known breeder Mr Reg Hunt.

Sales such as the “Indu Brazil Sale”, at the farm of the late Jaap van Deventer in the 80’s were adventures and were attended by enthusiastic crowds.

After the dissembling of Karoo Ochse in the late 1990, Clive started his own auctioneering company, Clive Gardner Auctioneers/C.G. Auctioneers. All of Clive clients followed him to the new company and most of the Production Sales were successfully conducted by him. During the celebration of the S.A. Brahman 50th anniversary, Clive conducted the Sale of the Legends.

New business, such as ‘Sale of the Roses’ was started in 2008 and is still going strong. Numerous high prices have been realised at many Elite Brahman sales during his active years in the Brahman sale yard. During the National Brahman sale in 2010 at Pretoria, a new record for a Grey Brahman Bull was set by Clive when he sold the bull for R475 000,00 to a Breeder in Namibia. Clive sold his Company a few years ago, but is still conducting sales as a freelance auctioneer.

Mike started his career in 1978 at the town Aberdeen in The Eastern Cape. During the mid 80’s Mike made a huge contribution in the Brahman sales arena. Vleissentraal, the company for which Mike conducted auctions, was a major role player during times when sales such as the ‘SA Red Brahman Sale’ took place at the Pretoria Showgrounds.

Mike was involved in many Production Sales that were conducted by Vleissentraal (Pty) LTD, where numerous high prices were realised.

The ‘Selected Stars Sale’ took place on the first Friday of November each year at Northam. Buyers across South Africa and neighbouring countries keenly attended this sale conducted by Mike, for many years.

During an interview with Time Magazine, Mike emphasized that it was a privilege to work with many successful Cattle breeders. He said: “My Job is only done when I know that I have done my best for the client. Only then does the Hammer fall”. He alsostated that he makes sure that he knows the detailed information regarding the seller and the genetics of his Seed-stock prior to conducting a sale.

Two years ago Mike received an award from the ARC for his contribution to the Stud Cattle business. Currently Mike is still conducting auctions for different companies as a free-lance Auctioneer.

The first South African, livestock auctioneer to do his “job” on a free-lance basis.

Johan started his career in the 1980’s as a sales represen-tative for Vleissentraal in Bethlehem. He then later moved to the USA to complete a course at the Missouri Auction School. Upon his return to South Africa in 1989, he became the first auctioneer to render his service on a free-lance basis.

Johan is well-known for his keen eye concerning the selection of breeding stock, resulting in numerous successful ventures, for example his partnership with Keta Boran stud. During the dispersal sale of the Keta herd in the late 90’s the Boran breed was well represented in the interest of the South African Cattle Breeders’ Society.

Johan is also acknowledged by the Southern African Brahman Breeders Association for the excellent manner in which he conducts Stud Stock sales in S.A, Namibia and Botswana.

Since the late 90’s Simon Hughes, from the firm S.H.M. and Johan had held many successful auctions within the Brahman community. One such outstanding year is 2006, when many previous sales records were broken due to the high demand for quality Brahmans.

He will be the auctioneer at the Brahman World Congress 2014 sale as well as the Top Twenty Heifer sale which will take place at Parys during April this year.

Barry started his career in Pretoria with the well-known auctioneering company, Vleissentraal.

In March 1983, Barry joined forces with Roderick and Martin as a Partner in the company, to be named Roderick, Martin and Purdham (Pty) Ltd. Over time Barry (had) became one of the most popular auctioneers, selling Brahmans at Production Sales as well as Elite Sales.

The Super Sun Sale, that Barry conducted developed into the “one place” to buy and sell Zebu Genetics. The demand that had developed for specific types of Zebu Genetics, (Gir, Indu Brazil and Nellore) during that time, was the main reason why the Super Sun Sales were highly successful. This venture continued for more than ten years.

It was at the first Super Sun sale that well-known Mr Sol Kertzner bought a Brahman Bull from Dr S.S. Lombard for R150 000 and later donated the Bull to, the acting President of Bophuthatswana at that time, Dr L Mangope.

Barry is still conducting auctions as a free-lance Auctioneer.
