All three modern Vantage race cars are based on the critically-acclaimed Aston Martin Vantage road car and powered by the same 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine, optimised by Aston Martin Racing. Weighing in dry at 1245kg, the Vantage GT3 produces a boost-vari- able 535bhp and 700 Nm of torque. Built from a lightweight aluminium chassis, again based on the road car, it features a steel roll-cage, an Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox, an Alcon motorsport multi-plate clutch, Öhlins four-way adjustable dampers and Alcon brakes and Bosch Motorsport ABS.The Vantage GT3 remains in development until homologated on 1 March, 2019 and replaces Aston Martin's most successful customer car, the V12 Vantage GT3. It is still winning races seven years after it was first introduced to the market - most recently in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup and British GT series. One of the key reasons for the popularity of the Vantage GT3's predecessor was the ease at which it allowed inexpe- rienced racers to drive quickly while maintaining an optimum perfor- mance window for professional drivers to be competitive in. TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Garry Bhaura an- nounced that Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® continued to report strong average rent increases for GTA condominium apartments rented through TREB's MLS® System in the second quarter of 2018 relative to Q2 2017. "The demand for condominium apartment rentals remained strong compared to the number of units available for rent. Current market conditions point to the fact that renters have little choice when it comes to finding a place to live. Governments need to look at ways to increase the supply of rental accommodation, both in terms of pur- pose-built rental properties and individual investor-held units. This would go a long way to easing the pace of rent growth in the GTA," said Bhaura. The average one-bedroom condominium apartment rent increased by 10.4 per cent on a year-over-year basis to $2,055 in Q2 2018. The number of one-bedroom condominium apartments rented through TREB's MLS® System amounted to 4,879 - a 2.9 per cent decrease compared to Q2 2017. The average two-bedroom condo- minium apartment rent increased by 8.8 per cent on a year-over-year basis to $2,755 in Q2 2018. The number of two-bedroom condo- minium apartments rented through TREB's MLS® System amounted to 3,104 - a 1.2 per cent increase compared to Q2 2017. "Recent government policy changes, including rent controls, have not alleviated the strong upward pressure on monthly rents for avail- able condominium apartments in the GTA. New, investor-held condo- minium apartments entering the market have not been enough to provide the needed balance in the condo rental market. As a result, the strong competition between renters continues to sustain double- digit or near-double-digit annual average rent increases," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis. LONDON, (IANS) For older adults (over 60), increase in sugar levels can improve memory and make them more motivated to perform difficult tasks at full capacity, according to new research. The findings showed that high blood sugar levels not only im- proves their memory and performance, but also makes older adults feel happier during a task. Older adults who had a glucose drink showed significantly better memory and more positive mood compared to older adults who consumed the artificial sweetener. But, in young adults, the glucose did not improve either the mood or the memory performance. It was noted that short-term energy availability in the form of raised blood sugar levels could be an important factor in older adults' motivation to perform a task at their highest capacity. Heightened motivation, in turn, could ex- plain the fact that increased blood sugar levels also increase older adults' sense of self-confidence, decrease self-perceptions of effort, and improve mood. Secularism, individual rights can bring economic prosperity: StudyLONDON, (IANS) Secularisation coupled with respect and tolerance for individual rights such as abor tion, divorce and homosexu-ality can boost a country's economic growth, reveals a study. The findings, published in Science Advances, showed that a declinein religion can influence a country's future economic prosperity. However, secularisation predicts future economic developmentonly when it is accompanied by a respect and tolerance for individual rights.Countries where abor tion, divorce and homosexuality are tolerated have a greater chance of future economic prosperity, the studyshowed. "We noticed that secularisation only leads to economic development when it is accompanied by a greater respect forindividual rights," said lead researcher Damian Ruck, from Britian's University of Bristol. "But that isn't to say that religiouscountries can't become prosperous. Religious institutions need to find their own way of modernising and respecting the rights ofindividuals," Ruck added. The subject has long been debated by classic scholars of social science including French sociologist Emile Durkheim, whoclaimed that religion fades away once economic development has satisfied our material needs, whereas German sociologist MaxWeber, argued that changes in religion drive economic productivity. For the study, the team measured the impor tance of religion in109 countries spanning the entire 20th century (1900 to 2000)."Over the course of the 20th century, changes in impor tance of religious practices appear to have predicted changes in GDP acrossthe world," said Alex Bentley from the University of Tennessee. "This doesn't necessarily mean that secularization caused eco-nomic development, since both changes could have been caused by some third factor with different time lags, but at least we canrule out economic growth as the cause of secularization in the past," he noted.

INDIANS INCREASED SALARYDIRECTLY RELATED WITHEASE OF FALLING ASLEEPNEW DELHI, (IANS) Indians have a direct correlation be-tween increasing salary and ease of falling asleep, says anIndia Sleep and Wellness survey commissioned by SundayMattresses and conducted among working professionalsabove the age of 25. The survey conducted across Delhi,Mumbai and Bengaluru indicates that there is also a directcorrelation between productivity and sleep, said a state-ment. Over two-thirds of the sound sleepers believe theyare hundred percent productive at work; whereas more thanhalf of those who reported getting insufficient sleep be-lieved they were only 75 per cent (or less) productive. In-terestingly, people below the age group of 30 sleep bettercompared to their older counter parts. Adults over the ageof 30 are twice as likely to have sleep related problems andadults over 45 years are three times more likely to havesleep related problems. Also, almost 40 per cent of people use an alarm to wake up.This is significantly high in Mumbai where 50 per cent ofthe respondents use an alarm, on a day to day basis. Itcomes as no surprise that people in Bengaluru go to bed theearliest (between 10 and 11 p.m.) whereas Mumbai has thehighest propor tion of night owls who sleep after midnight, perhaps owing to long commutes that are a norm there.Bengaluru has a better record of falling asleep as comparedto Delhi and Mumbai and this is mainly attributed to rela-tively lower noise levels. However, Bangaloreans repor t alower quality of sleep and have difficulty sustaining it.Singles and couples with kids sleep better. In general, singles and married people with kids (without differentiat-ing between parents with infant kids or grown up kids) aremore content and fall asleep easily as compared to marriedcouples without kids.People who share their bed with kids are 50 percent morelikely to have problems falling asleep. So, if you are plan-ning to have good sleep, it is better to for the kids andparents to separate their sleeping areas. The research find-ings also demonstrate that people who eat less than twohours before going to sleep are 50 percent more likely tohave sleep related issues. More Delhiites head to bed witha somewhat heavy or heavy dinner whereas Mumbai keepsit light.Overall, respondents think that mattresses are very impor-tant for good quality of sleep. People who sleep on mat-tresses that are new (less than 3 years old) are 20 per centless likely to have sleep issues compared to those sleep-ing on older mattresses. Foam mattresses (PU, Latex andMemory foam mattress) are the most popular models. Springmattresses are the second most popular type of mattress. Also smoking impacts sleep adversely. Smokers are 52per cent more likely to have sleep problems as comparedto non-smokers. Amongst smokers, ease of sleep goesdown as the number of cigarettes increase. For example, smokers who smoke 5-10 sticks a day are 10 per centmore likely to have sleep problems as compared to peoplewho smoke less than 5 sticks a day. Over 50 per cent ofpeople traveling more than an hour to work had a disturbedor troubled or insufficient sleep as compared to those whotravelled between 15 minutes to 1 hour.Alphonse Reddy, Founder and CEO, Sunday Mattress, added:"We at Sunday Mattresses are very passionate about any-thing to do with sleep and hence we commissioned thesurvey in India. We wanted to collect information on sleepand the various factors that impact it, as we believe that thequality and quantity of sleep directly correlates to a morefulfilled life. We hope that people could use some of theinformation shared to lead happy, productive lives."

DAILY EXERCISE MAYBOOST YOUR HEART EVENIN POLLUTED AREASLONDON, (IANS) People who continue with their regularphysical activities may have reduced risk of first and recur-rent hear t attack even in the areas with moderate-to-highlevels of traffic pollution, a new study suggests. The find-ings suggests that higher levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2)- a pollutant generated by traffic - were associated withmore hear t attacks, but the risk was lower among thosewho were physically active."Our study shows that physical activity even during ex-posure to air pollution, in cities with levels similar tothose in Copenhagen, can reduce the risk of hear t at-tack," said lead author Nadine Kubesch from the Univer-sity of Copenhagen. For the study, published in Journalof the American Hear t Association, the researchers inDenmark, Germany and Spain evaluated outdoor physi-cal activity levels (spor ts, cycling, walking and garden-ing) and NO2 exposure in 51,868 adults aged between50-65 years. The researchers also compared self -repor ted activitiesand lifestyle factors against hear t attack and to esti-mate average NO2 exposure, they used national trafficpollution monitoring data for each par ticipants ' address. They found that moderate cycling for four or more hours perweek cut risk for recurrent hear t attack by 31 per cent andthere was a 58 per cent reduction when all four types ofphysical activity (together totalling four hours per week ormore) were combined, regardless of air quality. Those who par ticipated in spor ts had a 15 per cent lowerrate of initial hear t attacks and there was a nine per centrisk reduction associated with cycling, the researchers said.Compared to par ticipants with low residential NO2 expo-sure, those in higher risk areas had a 17 per cent increaserisk in first hear t attack and 39 per cent for recurrent hear tattack, they added.

BRAMPTON - Guru Tegh Bahadur and Frederick Banting International Schoolsproudly celebrated the graduation and notable achievements of their studentsat the YMCA in downtown Brampton. During a formal and well-structuredceremony attended by students, teachers, and family members, GTB and FBISchools honoured the dedication of their students during the 2017-2018 aca-demic year. The celebration was suffused with graduations, awards, songand dance, speeches, and food and refreshments for the guests. The two sister schools - Guru Tegh Bahadur and Frederick Banting - bothpush their students hard during the academic session and reward themhandsomely at the onset of summer break. "It's important that our studentsfeel an unmistakable sense of accomplishment after the arduous work theyput in," says Principal Sanjiv Dhawan. He firmly believes that children excelmost in their studies when they feel supported and celebrated, when theentire community of their peers, educators, and families rejoice in theirsuccess. Accordingly, the Graduation and Awards Ceremony that took placeon June 28 is seen as a crucial component of the students' overall academicand character development."It vividly displays to young people that you reap what you sow, that hardwork and dedication are the gateways to success in life," notes Dhawan. Theceremony itself consisted of intricate and versatile items. It was set inmotion by a formal welcome speech by the Principal and his team afterwhich the audience enjoyed an endearing song and dance performance bythe Kindergar ten students. That per formance, full of enthusiasm and charm, had a delightful effect on both the many students present and their families. The Kindergarten piece was followed by another musical piece: a famouscontemporary song performed by two Grade 6 students without the assis-tance of musical instruments. The audience was notably impressed by theper formers' ability to car ry out this challenging task flawlessly. Other ar tisticper formances throughout the day included an intricate Bollywood Dance, three different Punjabi dance performances (Bhanghra, LaungElaichi, andGiddha), and an interesting dance fusion choreographed and performed byelementary school students. Overall, the entertainment por tion of the cer-emony was rich in diversity, style, and dynamism. The audience was both impressed and charmed by the ar tistic abilities of thetwo schools' students, as the joyous mood felt throughout the auditorium wasunmistakable. In addition to artistic performances, GTB and FBI's Graduationand Awards Ceremony also included a number of thought-provoking andsoul-stirring speeches. Students, faculty members, and distinguished mem-bers of the Brampton community all gave speeches. In those speeches thegraduating and award-receiving students were not only commended for theirachievements, but were also encouraged to push the boundaries of their

ambitions for the next academic year. In one such speech, a graduatingGrade 12 student reminisced on her time in GTB and reflected on how re-warding her educational experience had been. She confidently professed her readiness for postsecondary education and forthe challenges of adult life in general. The student also expressed her grati-tude to the Principal and his academic institution for instilling life values, work habits, and worldly knowledge that will enable her to strive restlessly inmarching down her chosen life path. Another speech was given by a staffmember of the YMCA, in which he emphasized the importance of physicalhealth as a foundation for mental health. Academic success and ultimatelythe high functioning of the human mind, he suggested, are contingent on thevitality of the body. This speech nicely complemented GTB's commendable practice of engag-ing its students in full day activities at the YMCA once per month during theacademic year. Principal Dhawan believes that a day dedicated to swim-ming, aerobics, mar tial ar ts, and group sports is a crucial supplement todaily studies and the mental exertion they entail. Ultimately, the speecheswere versatile in nature and thus reflected the two schools' multifaceted andmultilayered approach to education, in which the body, the mind, and thecommunity are actively engaged in the overall development of students.Lastly and most importantly, GTB and FBI celebrated the graduation andaccomplishments of their students. The members of the graduating classes- Senior Kindergar ten, Grade 5, Grade 8, and Grade 12 - all received certifi-cates, flowers, and warm handshakes by their teachers and principal, astheir proud parents looked on armed with photographic devices. The stu-dents, looking formidable in their gowns and caps, proudly accepted theirdiplomas as they vowed to push their capabilities even further in the nextyear. The graduating Grade 12 class, in its entirety, has received multipleuniversity acceptances with scholarships both here and abroad. For thisnotable achievement, each Grade 12 student was individually honored witha personalized speech by Principal Dhawan. "You are their inspiration," hesaid to the Grade 12 grads as he pointed to the wide-eyed Kindergar tenstudents huddled around their homeroom teacher. The parents of the Grade12 grads proudly photographed their children with the confidence that GTBhas prepared them with the necessary tools for success in their future en-deavors. The achievement awards presented to various students were alsohanded out during these proceedings. Two students from each grade re-ceived an award for either Outstanding Per formance or Most SignificantImprovement during the 2017-2018 academic year. The list of award recipi-ents is posted below, as GTB and FBI wish to share the students' accomplish-ments with the greater community and give them recognition.

EAT DINNER BEFORE 9 PM TO LOWER RISKOF BREAST AND PROSTATE CANCER

LONDON, (IANS) Having your last meal before 9 pm or at least twohours before going to bed could lower the risk of breast and prostatecancer, suggests a new study. Compared to those who have supperafter 10 pm or those who go to bed right after meal, people who taketheir evening meal before 9 pm or wait at least two hours before goingto sleep have approximately 20 per cent lower risk of those types ofcancers, the findings showed. "Our study concludes that adherenceto diurnal eating patterns is associated with a lower risk of cancer,"said lead author Manolis Kogevinas from the Barcelona Institute forGlobal Health (ISGlobal) in Spain. "The findings highlight the impor-tance of assessing circadian rhythms in studies on diet and cancer,"Kogevinas added. For the study, published in International Journal ofCancer, the team analysed data from 621 cases of prostate cancerand 1,205 cases of breast cancer, as well as 872 male and 1,321

female controls. The par ticipants, were interviewed about their mealtiming, sleep habits and chronotype - an individual attribute correlat-ing with preference for morning or evening activity. The par ticipantsalso completed a questionnaire on their eating habits and adherenceto cancer prevention recommendations. The researchers found thatcancer patients were more likely to have dinner late at night. Breastand prostate cancers are also among those most strongly associatedwith night-shift work, circadian disruption and alteration of biologicalrhythms. The research suggests that long-term late night snacking may havethe similar effect to night-shift work and circadian disruption. "If thefindings are confirmed, they will have implications for cancer pre-vention recommendations, which currently do not take meal timinginto account," Kogevinas noted.

Smelling coffee may boost your analytical skillsNEW YORK, (IANS) If you love the fragrance of coffee, there are highchances of better per formance in analytical tasks, a new study hasfound. According to the researchers, smelling a coffee-like scent -which has no caffeine in it - has an effect similar to that of drinkingcoffee, suggesting a placebo effect of coffee scent. The findings also suggested that the scent of coffee alone may helppeople per form better on the analytical por tion of the Graduate Man-agement Aptitude Test (GMAT) - a computer adaptive test required bymany business schools. "It's not just that the coffee-like scent helpedpeople per form better on analytical tasks, which was already inter-esting," said co-author Adriana Madzharov from the Stevens Instituteof Technology in the US."But they also thought they would do better, and we demonstrated thatthis expectation was at least partly responsible for their improvedper formance," Madzharov added. For the study, published in the Jour-nal of Environmental Psychology, the research team administered a

10-question GMAT algebra test in a computer lab to about 100 under-graduate business students. The par ticipants were divided into twogroups. One group took the test in the presence of an ambient coffee-like scent, while a control group took the same test - but in an un-scented room. The researchers found that the group in the coffee-smelling room scored significantly higher on the test. The team alsodesigned a follow-up survey - conducted among more than 200 newpar ticipants - quizzing them on beliefs about various scents and theirperceived effects on human per formance. The par ticipants believedthey would feel more aler t and energetic in the presence of a coffeescent, versus a flower scent or no scent; and that exposure to coffeescent would increase their performance on mental tasks. The results suggest that expectations about per formance can be ex-plained by beliefs that coffee scent alone makes people more aler tand energetic. Previous studies have also suggested that coffee maylessen the risk of hear t disease, diabetes and dementia.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Getting physically and sexually abused as achild may increase the risk of endometriosis - a gynaecologicaldisorder characterized by chronic pelvic pain and painful periods- during adulthood, a new study suggests. The study suggestedthat women repor ting severe chronic abuse of multiple types had79 per cent increased risk of laparoscopical ly-confirmed en-dometriosis."Both physical and sexual abuse were associated with endometrio-sis risk, with abuse severity, chronicity, and accumulation of typesof abuse each associated with increasing risk in a dose-responsemanner," said lead author Holly R . Har ris from the Fred HutchinsonCancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington."A growing body of literature suggests that early traumatic expe-riences affect production of stress hormones and inflammatoryresponses, and these contribute to chronic pelvic pain and otherpain syndromes," Har ris added. For the study , published in thejournal Human Reproduction, the researchers collected data from60,595 women between 1989 to 2013.The resea rche rs found tha t more than 3 ,000 cases o f

laparoscopically-confirmed en-domet r ios is were d iagnosedduring 24 years of follow-up. Itwas also found that 21 per centof all women repor ted havingexperienced some level of bothchild/adolescent physical andsexual abuse."Our findings suggest that simi-l a r mechan isms may be in -volved in the association be-tween ea r l y abuse and en-dometriosis diagnosed duringadu l thood . We need an i n -creased focus on the potentialunder ly ing biological mecha-nisms to fully understand thesere l a t i onsh ips , " Ha r r i s sa id ."This study adds to the growingev idence tha t abuse du r ingchi ldhood/adolescence is notrare and can have multiple con-sequences for l i felong healthand well-being," he noted.

Childhood abuse may up endometriosis risk in adulthood

NEW YORK, (IANS) Think twice before handing over asmar tphone to your teenager as new research warns thatadolescents who frequently use digital devices are morelikely to develop symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactiv-ity disorder (ADHD). Teenagers who are heavy users ofdigital devices are twice as likely as infrequent users toshow symptoms of ADHD, showed the findings publishedin the Journal of the American Medical Association.ADHD is a brain disorder with symptoms that include apattern of inattention, hyperactive behavior and impulsive-ness that inter feres with functioning or development. "New,mobile technologies can provide fast, high-intensity stimu-lation accessible all day, which has increased digital me-dia exposure far beyond what's been studied before," saidAdam Leventhal, Professor at University of Southern Cali-fornia Keck School of Medicine in the US."We can say with confidence that teens who were exposedto higher levels of digital media were significantly morelikely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future," Leventhaladded. The study focused on the impact of digital diver-sions, including social media, streaming video, text mes-saging, music downloads and online chatrooms, amongothers, on the mental health of the adolescents. The team analysed data from 2,587 teenagers for two yearswho were asked to repor t how frequently did they use, 14popular digital media platforms, included for the study. Theinvestigators sor ted media use frequency into three cat-egories - no use, medium use and high use. Then, theymonitored the students every six months during the studyperiod. They sought to determine if digital media use ingrade 10 was associated with ADHD symptoms trackedthrough grade 12.The results showed that, nine and a half per cent of the 114children who used at least half of the media platforms fre-quently and 10.5 per cent of the 51 kids who used all 14platforms frequent ly showed new ADHD symptoms.Contrastingly, 4.6 per cent of the 495 students who were notfrequent users of any digital platforms, showed ADHD symp-toms, approximate to background rates of the disorder inthe general population.

Get flawless make-up with strobing, flare highlightingNEW DELHI, (IANS) New techniques like strobing, non-touring and flare highlight can give a dewy andnaturally flawless make-up look, say exper ts. Make-up ar tistes Niti Luthra and Asha Singh have sharedtips on how to ace your make-up with these techniques:* To get a flawless make-up, your face should be cleansed and moisturised well. If the skin is clean andsmooth, it becomes easier to get an impeccable look.* Go for concealing: The next step should be to cover pigmentation, dark circles, spots and acne marks.

Use concealer as it is the ultimate keyto cover all the marks and flaws andmake your face look radiant and spot-less.* Per fect base with strobing: Use afoundation as a base and powder yourskin well to avoid sweating. Apply atwo shade lighter foundation by mixingit with strobe cream for a sheen effecton the skin. It is impor tant to use differ-ent strobing shades based on your com-plexion. This will ensure the skin looksbright and radiant. People with fair skin

tones should focus on white to beige highlights. Those with medium skin tones look best in bronzed beigeto gold hues. Meanwhile, golds to peachy and orange shimmers stand out on dark skin tones.* Dewy finish: First there was contouring, and then came the strobing trend. But now there is non-touringwhich is essentially a marriage between the two that provides a glowy sculpt to the face, but sans thesuper defined lines. To get the per fect look one can use the non-touring technique for a flawless dewyfinish. It is a technique which is in trend and gives you that mid-August glow.* The per fect highlight: Most people apply their highlighter with a large fan brush, but instead to get thatflare highlighted glow, you should use a very dense wet eyeshadow brush. This, in turn, condenses thepigment and centralises it. The flare highlight is all about making a glow so reflective and intense that itcreates a lens flare on the camera when a photograph is snapped. Complete the look: For a completely flawless look, use a blusher of your choice and apply a bright shade lipstick along with a soft eye make-up.

Unhealthy fat, cholesterol linked with lower fertilityLONDON, (IANS) Young women with unhealthy levels of fat in theirblood before pregnancy are more likely to only have one or no child atall, finds a study explaining the previously observed association be-tween lower fer tility and hear t disease. Women with an "unhealthy"blood fat profile of high LDL ('bad') cholesterol, triglycerides, and ahigh triglyceride to HDL ('good') ratio, as well as low levels of HDLcholesterol, measured years before they conceived, were 20 to 100per cent more likely to be pregnant only once.High levels of LDL, total cholesterol and obesity were also associ-ated with greater odds of having no children. "Pre-existing poorlipid and metabolic profiles could represent one of the possiblelinkages between previously observed fer tility and later (cardio-vascular disease)," said the researchers, including Aleksandra

Pirnat from the University of Bergen, Norway. For the study, pub-lished in the journal BMJ Open, the team analysed blood samplesfrom 4,322 women, aged 20 and above, which included 1677 child-less women, 488 one-time mothers, and 2,157 women with twoor more children. The analysis showed that childless women and one-time moth-ers tended to be overweight and older. They were also found tosmoke more than women who had had two or more kids. Fur ther,one-time mothers also had a higher prevalence of diabetes, andwere more than twice as likely to have had fer til ity treatment. When compared with women who had two or more p regnancies, total cholesterol above the clinically recommended level was asso-ciated with greater odds of having no children, irrespective of BMI.

CRISPR gene editing can causegenetic damage, says studyLONDON, (IANS) The much celebrated CRISPR/Cas9 geneediting technique can cause greater genetic damage in cellsthan was previously thought, scientists have warned. CRISPR/Cas9 is a type of molecular scissor technology that can altersections of DNA in cells by cutting at specific points and intro-ducing changes at that location. Besides extensive use in sci-entific research, CRISPR/Cas9 has also been seen as a prom-ising way to create potential genome editing treatments fordiseases such as HIV, cancer or sickle cell disease. But the new research, repor ted in the journal Nature Biotech-nology, revealed that CRISPR/Cas9 frequently caused exten-sive mutations, though at a distance from the target site. Manyof the cells, in both mice and humans, had large genetic rear-rangements such as DNA deletions and inser tions. These couldlead to impor tant genes being switched on or off, which couldhave major implications for CRISPR/Cas9 use in therapies. In addition, some of these changes were too far away from the targetsite to be seen with standard genotyping methods, the researchers said."This is the first systematic assessment of unexpected events resultingfrom CRISPR/Cas9 editing in therapeutically relevant cells, and we foundthat changes in the DNA have been seriously underestimated beforenow," said Allan Bradley, Professor at the Wellcome Sanger Institute inLondon. "It is important that anyone thinking of using this technology forgene therapy proceeds with caution, and looks very carefully to check forpossible harmful effects," Bradley addedThe work has implications for how CRISPR/Cas9 is used thera-peutically and is likely to re-spark researchers' interest infinding alternatives to the standard CRISPR/Cas9 method forgene editing. "While it is not known if genomic sites in othercell lines will be affected in the same way, this study showsthat fur ther research and specific testing is needed beforeCRISPR/Cas9 is used clinically," the researchers said.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Prenatal or early exposure of your kids to a plas-tic chemical may harm brain development as well as reduce cogni-tive function, a study says. Phthalates - chemicals that belong to thesame class as Bisphenol A (BPA) and used in food packaging andprocessing materials - can potentially inter fere with hormones im-por tant for the developing brain. The study by researchers includingJanice Juraska, from the University of Illinois in the US, showed thatrats' prenatal and early exposure to phthalates was associated withsmaller medial prefrontal cor tex (mPFC) - brain region responsiblefor deep and dreamless sleep. They also performed poorly on anattention-switching task than those not exposed to the chemicals early

in life. The findings, published in Journal of Neuroscience, showedthat perinatal phthalate exposure resulted in a reduction in neuronnumber, synapse number, size of the mPFC and a deficit in cognitiveflexibility for both male and female adult offspring of these rats. As themPFC is crucial for high-level cognitive functions, reduced cognitiveflexibility is observed in developmental disorders such as autism. The results show that perinatal phthalate exposure can have long-term effects on the cor tex and behaviour of both male and female rats. The findings are impor tant as humans may be regularly exposed to avariety of phthalates, which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals, theresearchers warned.

Childhood infections may affectacademic performanceLONDON, (IANS) Severe infections during childhood thatlead to hospitalisations could lower academic performancein adolescence, a new study has found. The study, pub-lished in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, suggestedthat higher numbers of hospitalisations for infections wereassociated with a reduced probability of completing ninthgrade, as well as with lower test scores. "Our findings ex-tend our understanding regarding the association betweenpar ticularly severe infections during childhood and adoles-cence and cognitive achievement," said co-author Köhler-Fosberg from the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. For the study, the researchers included nationwide data of598,553 children born in Denmark between 1987 and 1997.The researchers looked at hospital admission for infections,an indicator of moderate to severe infections and prescrip-tions for anti-infective drugs in primary care, reflecting less-severeinfections. These infection measures were analysed for their associa-tion with two measures of later school achievement - completing ninthgrade and average scores on the final ninth-grade school examinations. The researchers found that any hospital contact for infections wasassociated with an 18 per cent reduction in the odds of completing ninthgrade. The more hospitalisations for infections, the lower the odds ofreaching this educational milestone - children with five or more infec-tions requiring hospitalisation had a 38 per cent reduction in the odds ofcompleting ninth grade. Among children who completed ninthgrade, hospitalisation for infections was associated with asmall but significant reduction in final exam scores.

TORONTO, (IANS) Scientists have found that multiple sclerosis (MS)may be identified at least five years earlier as the patients were morelikely to undergo treatments for nervous system disorders like painor sleep problems, according to a study.MS results from the body's immune system attacking myelin - fattymaterial that enables rapid transmission of electrical signals - whichdisrupts the communication between the brain and other par ts of thebody, leading to vision problems, muscle weakness, difficulty withbalance and coordination, and cognitive impairments."The existence of such 'warning signs' are well-accepted forAlzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, but there has beenlittle investigation into a similar pattern for MS," said lead researcherHelen Tremlett from the Division of Neurology at University of BritishColumbia in Canada. "We now need to delve deeper into this phenom-enon, perhaps using data-mining techniques. We want to see if thereare discernible patterns related to sex, age or the 'type' of MS theyeventually develop," Tremlett added. For the study, published in Multiple Sclerosis Journal, the team exam-ined health records of 14,000 people with multiple sclerosis and com-pared them to the health records of 67,000 people without the dis-ease. Fibromyalgia - a condition involving widespread musculoskel-etal pain - was found more than three times in people who were later

diagnosed with MS as compared to those who did not.Irritable bowel syndrome was almost twice as common in peoplewho developed the disorder. Migraine headaches and any mood oranxiety disorder, which includes depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder werealso found in higher rates among the group. Further, higher rates of these illnessesalso corresponds with higher use of medications for musculoskeletal disorders, nervous system disorders, and disorders of the genito-urinary tract, along withantidepressants and antibiotics. The findings may enable physiciansto diagnose the disease earlier and star t the treatment, thus possiblyslowing the damage it causes to the brain and spinal cord.
