Safety & Security
Beginning the week of February 11, 2013, we will be locking all of the entrances to the elementary and secondary buildings. We have installed a “buzz in” notification system that we will implement to let people into the buildings. This may create an inconvenience at times but this extra security should help keep our students, parents, and employees safer. There is a black buzzer pad to the right of the door. The buzzer to connect to the school’s office for notification is located on the bottom right hand side. Press that button, you will hear a phone connection, someone will an-swer for identification purposes, you will then be buzzed in. Visitors must still check in at the office once they have entered the building. (Pictured at the bottom right is the buzzer on the wall.) Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we implement this new security system.

Another month has flown by and graduation is in sight for the seniors. I am reiterating last month’s informa-tion on tasks that seniors should be starting to complete. The first task is obtaining a PIN number for the FASFA. This is done at the web-site www.pin.ed.gov Both the student and parents need a PIN. Your PIN is an electronic access code that serves as your personal identifier and can be used every year to electronically apply for federal student aid and to access your U.S. Department of Education records online. Parents, if you have already obtained a PIN for previous children, then you do not need another one. You can use the same one for all children. Students must have their own. Most seniors have obtained a PIN in senior careers class. Do not lose your PIN as you will need it through all your college years. After receiving your PIN, you should apply for federal student financial assistance by completing the FASFA. Even if you do not need financial assistance, everyone should fill out the FASFA because colleges use this information in helping with many other things such as scholarships. Federal student loan interest rates are lower than any other loans so you are encouraged to fill out the FASFA to see what you qualify for. The fastest way to fill out the FASFA and to get results back is to do it online electronically. The web-site is www.fafsa.ed.gov A FAFSA on the Web Worksheet is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/pubs for you to print and write down your information prior to completing the online submission of the FAFSA. You can obtain printed copies of the worksheet by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Apply for the FASFA between Jan. 1, 2013 and June 30, 2013. The sooner the better as colleges may have their own deadlines which usually can be as early as February. You do need to have your Income tax information finished or close to finished to apply. There is a tool at www.fafsa.ed.gov called the FAFSA4caster that can help students and families prepare financially for col-lege before officially applying for federal student aid. It provides an estimate of federal student aid eligibility by in-stantly calculating an estimated Expected Family Contribution* - the indicator used to estimate a family’s or a stu-dent’s ability to contribute toward the cost of an education after high school. Information that you will need to fill out the FASFA

The Education Quest website (www.educationquest.org) gives great tutorials for filling out the FASFA. It
goes over each question and helps answer any questions you may have.
A link to the FASFA and Education Quest websites are posted on our school website.
2012 untaxed income records – examples include Social Security benefits, welfare benefits such as Tempo-
rary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) and veteran benefits.
Current bank statements, business and investment mortgage information; business and farm records; and
stock, bond and other investment records.
Alien registration number (if you are not a U.S. citizen).
Other important information You should never pay to fill out the FASFA. Check the web address to make sure it ends in gov.
I have a booklet “Funding Education Beyond High School” that students or parents can pick up.
Northeast Community College is offering some free assistance through their Financial Aid Office at the Col-
lege Welcome Center on Fridays from 1pm -4pm between February and June 2013 with no appointment nec-essary (excluding days the college is closed). They are also offering this same service on Saturday, Febru-ary 23rd from 9am-1pm by appointment only. Number to call is 1-800-844-7285.
Seniors should visit and then apply to colleges they are seriously considering.
Scholarships An updated list of scholarships is available in the counseling office for students to pick up. There is also a
link on our school web-site. Bluejay Foundation and Local scholarship packets have been distributed to all seniors. All these scholarships have an April 2nd deadline.
Please notify me of any scholarships earned so that proper recognition can be given at graduation. This in-
cludes all scholarships earned, even those not accepted.

Building a Nation of Readers
This is the 16th year of the Read Across America program. Read Across America is traditionally cele-brated on March 2nd every year.
A special committee is making plans to help us celebrate Dr. Suess and reading on March 4, 2013. NEA is calling all of America’s children, both young and old, to reward their learning by celebrating the joys of reading with Dr. Suess on his 109th birthday. The theme this year is “Grab your Hat and Read with the Cat”. From Dr. Suess to Lemony Snicket, oh, the places we’ll go when we read.

WORDS FROM THE 1ST GRADERS!
Social Studies From the Desk of Mr. Rose
8Th American History- In this class we are studying American History from it's beginning. Presently, this includes the colonial war and the expansion of America westward. Later, the class will focus on how governing began in America and how that works into the government of today. Students will review lessons learned in English and Keyboarding classes by doing a report on Black History. This is part of Newman Grove's emphasis on learning across the curriculum. The concepts of Step up to Writ-ing are used in the class to help students learn terms and to improve better note taking skills that will help in other classes and later in life in their educational pursuits. Junior High Study Skills is a small class of a mixture of 7th and 8th grade students. Activities begin with doing a reading ac-tivity and then an breaking down the terms used in the reading. We then discuss how they might be used with science, math or other fields. On Friday of each week, Mr. Rudloff comes in and discusses the use of the these terms in his guidance on types of jobs. Health 8- In this class, we cover a broad base of health issues. We start with a study of the human body and it muscular and skeletal systems and it transforms into the study of illegal drug usage and drug effects on these systems. We also do a W.A.I.T. (Why am I tempted) session after showing the effects of the drugs. Also included in the class is discussion on healthy relationships that in-cludes peer pressure, bullying, better communications with peers and parents on their feelings as well as many other issues. The first semester went by really fast and what a great bunch of kids.

Speech Team 2013
By Rhonda Rother
The Newman Grove Speech Team had its season-opener at Osceola on January 26 with three competitors attending: Mariely Estrada (poetry), Alaina Rast (serious prose and informative), and Dari-enne Pokorny (informative). All three girls did well for so early in the season. Mariely earned all superiors and two ribbons, including a blue, in individual rounds. Alaina received mostly superiors for both of her events and also earned several ribbons, including a blue. And Darienne received excellent ratings in two rounds. Again, due to conflicts with other activities as well as illnesses, we will be taking only a fraction of our full team. Our team includes seniors Brock Donelson, Demi Edgell, Jason Kaufman, and Darienne Pokorny. Juniors are Megan Nelson, Brooke Pieke, Alaina Rast, and Brett Weinman. We currently have only one sopho-more, Mariely Estrada; but the freshmen help fill out our team with another 5 members: Esmer Arreguin, Celine Dunlap, Destiny Johnson, Joe O’Brien, and Nolan Wondercheck. Other meets coming up in our 2013 season are
the first annual Newman Grove Invitational, to be held
on February 20; the Pope John Invitational on Saturday,
February 23; Parents’ Night on March 4; Districts at
Leigh on Wednesday, March 13; and finally, State
Speech at UNK on Friday, March 22.

Leadership. Growth. Success. By Kylie Sweeter
It has been an extremely busy year already in the agri-
culture classroom and for the FFA chapter. The FFA chapter
started off the year by participating in the district livestock judg-
ing competition in Norfolk on January 24th. With close to 500
students in our district and two other districts competing, the
Newman Grove teams did fairly well. In the senior division Billy
O’Brien placed 21st individually and Alex Wiese placed 24th.
The senior team of John O’Brien, Billy O’Brien, Alex Wiese, and
Jacob Haase finished in 8th place. In the junior division Andy
King placed 13th individually and Joe O’Brien placed 22nd. The
junior team of Andy King, Joe O’Brien, Nolan Wondercheck, and
Celine Dunlap placed 9th at the competition. Both teams will
compete at the state contest in April.
On February 2nd we had State Degree and Proficiency
reviews for our FFA district. Members Demi Edgell, Jason Kauf-
man, and Kendra Nelson will receive their State Degrees in April
at State Convention. In order to receive the State FFA Degree
members must meet several qualifications including completing
an application, submitting two years of SAE record books, pass-
ing an FFA test, and participating in an interview. Brooke
Pieke’s SAE proficiency application received top gold in the
agriscience area and will also advance to the state competition.
The members have been extremely busy preparing
events for our National FFA Week held February 17th-23rd. A
few members have made plans to attend the Made For Excellence
and Advanced Leadership Development conferences in Kearney
February 22nd and 23rd, and our chapter will host a Nebraska
state FFA officer at the end of February. Members are also pre-
paring to compete in our Career Development Event contest held
March 5th in Columbus.
The agriculture classroom and shop have welcomed
many new additions that benefit “hands on learning”. At the be-
ginning of the school year our shop received several new welders
and welding equipment to improve safety and learning opportuni-
ties. Another new addition to our shop is the Plasma Cam ma-
chine which cuts out metal art with a plasma torch. Also, the
classroom is now home to a few new pets - a guinea pig and a
fish aquarium.

REPORT JJ THE
Boys Basketball By Matt Rudloff
Boys Basketball Team hoping to finish the year
strong and make a run for state
The Boone Central/Newman Grove boys basketball
team is hoping to finish the season strong with a win against
Crofton this Friday, Feb. 15th and to use the momentum to
head into sub-district play on Tuesday February 19th. The
Cardinals will play the winner of the Battle Creek and Madi-
son game. With a win, the Cards would then play the win-
ner of Pierce and Norfolk Catholic. With another win, the
game after that would most likely be Wayne coming out of
the other side of the District. The Cardinals record is cur-
rently 18-5. Junior Varsity team is sitting at 11-6. The
freshmen team is undefeated.
State Champ Bowling Team
The Newman Grove High School Girls Bowling Team made it to state bowling in Lincoln after placing second in districts in Hastings. After bowling in the first qualifying round on Saturday, February 9th, the team was seeded 7th. They had to bowl against Humphrey St. Francis and won 3 out of 4 matches to be eligible to continue. They then bowled against Scribner-Snyder and won the first 3 matches, which made them eligible to be in the championship game Sunday morning against Ravenna. Ravenna was a tough team, and they had to bowl 5 matches, but the Newman Grove Bluejays came out the champions. The bowling match will be on NETV, February 17th, at 8:00 a.m., so be sure to watch the girls. Bowlers are (l-r) Skye Leonard, Emily Strong, Savannah Wiese, Crystal Salinas. Their coach is Tim Krueger.
BC/NG Lady Cardinals
By Eric Albers
The Lady Cardinals were looking to finish the season strong after a 6th place Mid-States Conference tournament finish, the Lady Cardinals took momen-tum into Lutheran High. The Lady Cardinals came with a strong first quarter and never looked back. BC/NG won the game by a score of 62-38. After that win against Lutheran High, the Lady Cardinals was placed the #3 seed in the C1-8 sub-district setting up a game against the # 2 seed Norfolk Catholic at Norfolk High. The Lady Cardinals played hard, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Knights. The Lady Cardinals season ended with a 55-38 loss to the Knights. BC/NG Lady Cardinals finished the sea-son with a 13-12 record. It was a great season the girls played with great effort throughout the entire season. Each team of the Lady Cardinals were very successful this season, the junior varsity fin-ished 13-5 and the freshman team with an 8-3 record. We would like to thank all the fans for coming out to support the Lady Cardinals. Pictured is Newman Grove senior Darienne Pokorny.
Seniors: Darienne Pokorny, Terri Molt and Shannon Stuhlmil-ler at the last home game.

Fairbury 136.5 12. Columbus Lakeview 26.0 We are definitely disappointed for the young men as their efforts were outstanding. We just could not get a few breaks when we needed them. Steven, Dakota, and Ethan all made it to within one match of qualifying. Steven won his pivotal first match but just did not have a good match in the heartbreak round. Dakota had two hard fought losses that he was oh so close to pulling out. In the semis he scored a late takedown and almost got nearfall points in a 6-4 loss. Trailing 2-1 in the final seconds of his heartbreak round match Dakota attempted a desperation shot and was taken down at the buzzer. Ethan came close to scoring a big upset as he nearly pinned his heartbreak round opponent in the second period and held a 3-2 lead until halfway through the final period. Ethan also avenged an earlier season loss while picking up a pair of wins. Joel won a couple of matches. Cody and Jackson came up just short in identical 7-4 losses to guys that went on to qualify. Scott knocked off two guys seeded way ahead of him and nearly pulled out a third one. Billy came from behind to score a pin. The worst thing that happened was in Skyler’s match with the eventual champ when he took the guy down just out of bounds 26 seconds into the match but banged his jaw so hard that he received a concussion that will likely end his participation in con-tact sports. 7th Grade Boys Basketball By Coach Kris Pestel
We were able to get our first win of the season! This was a game
that we were able to work on our zone offense and really concen-trate on getting the ball into the post players. I was very pleased
with the overall effort of all of the boys. They really worked on
the concepts that we asked them to perform and were highly suc-
cessful.

livan 12, Tyler Schriver 4
We were able to play in two 7th grade games so we everyone was
able to get a great deal of playing time. In this game we had too
many turnovers. We have to concentrate on jump stops and mak-
ing good passes. Defensive, we need to work a little more on ball
awareness in relationship to the offensive player. We were out of
position a few too many times which led to some easy baskets for
Twin River.

In the second 7th grade game we came out with good inten-
sity. We were able to get some good looks early which led to
some easy baskets. Defensively, we did a much better job putting
pressure on the ball and playing team defense. We were very
pleased with the effort and team play of the boys today. This was
the best game we have played to this point.

This would be the tale of two halves. In the first half, we were
aggressive on both ends of the floor. On offense, we were able to
get several back door layups and we were able to get the ball un-
selfishly to the open player. Defensively, we were able to press
and get some turnovers in the half court which also led to several
layups. In the second half we became complacent which let them
back in the game. We turned the ball over, lacked team play on
defense and didn't work for good shots in offense. We have to work to play consistent the entire game on both ends of the floor
and we must start to understand situational play in basketball.

Scoring: Cody Nelson 6, Matt Schmitz 2, Mike Murcek 2, Nick

We were also able to play 2 extra quarters to allow more playing
time for all the kids. We got off to a slow start, but were able to
fight back in the second quarter to tie them.
St. Paul 6 2 = 8
BC/NG 2 6 = 8
Scoring: Bryton Fowlkes 6, Tyler Schriver 2
Even though we struggled with Fullerton's height but were able to
push through those set backs to get the win. We felt that we had
several unforced errors but fortunately they did not turn into points
for Fullerton. We were able to press them to get some transition
baskets. Overall, it was a good win, but we have to play more
focused and consistent throughout the entire game.

Simply put, Central City wanted to play this game more than we
did. We played the way that we should during the third quarter,
but we were one step behind the rest of the game. We were very
passive on both ends of the floor which lead to many turnovers
and wide open shots. We have the ability to play well, but we
must work on playing consistent throughout the entire game. Give Central City credit, they played harder than us.

We were excited that we were able to play 2 seventh grade games
so everyone was able to get quite a bit of playing time. The first
game, was a very competitive game. We were able to drive to the
basket for either a layup or a short pass for an easy basket. O'Neill
was able to squeak out a three point win. We were able to get off a shot at the buzzer which took great effort.
O'Neill 2 8 3 4 = 17
BC/NG 2 8 6 4 = 20
In the second game, we were able to press them into turnovers
which lead to some easy baskets. We also rebounded the best that
we had all season which only allowed O'Neill one shot a posses-
sion. In the second quarter we turned the ball over too much, but
as a whole, we played very well.
O'Neill 1 7 3 4 = 15
BC/NG 11 6 14 9 = 40
This is a talented and competitive group of young athletes who
has improved a great deal since the beginning of the sea-
son. They each need to continue to develop their individual
skills which will lead to overall better team play.

8th Grade Boys Basketball By Coach Jeff Hayes
We had a tough night on the basketball court. We had trouble
moving the ball against Neligh and when we got shots they did
not fall. Neligh played pressure defense and they caused us to
make many turnovers. We will have to improve our execution
in the future.

We had a tough time matching Twin River’s offensive output
this game. We are not converting enough shots on offense
right now. Our ball security needs word so that we can cut
down on our turnovers. We know what we have to work on
and now it is about making improvements the rest of the sea-
son.

The 8th graders got a win against St. Paul. We came out with a
purpose the 1st half and built a 23 to 18 lead. The third quar-
ter we were outscored by St. Paul. We came out much more
focused the 4th quarter and made shots. We put up 19 points in
our best scoring output of the season. It was great win for the
team.

We battled hard this game but came up 1 point short in the
end. We started the game great building a 10-2 point 1st quar-
ter lead. We got into foul trouble and gave up too many points
in the 2nd quarter and lost the lead. It was close down the
stretch but just couldn’t quite get there in the end.

We fell behind the first half 28 to 16. We just didn’t play with
enough energy the 1st half. We found some the second half and
the team really played together well. We managed to get a
two point lead in the fourth quarter. We seemed to run out of
gas towards the end. It was a very good effort the 2nd half. We
want to continue to play with that type of energy.

We fell behind in the first quarter and it was an uphill battle
the rest of the way. O’Neill came out in a press and we made
some careless turnovers that led to quick baskets for them. We
settled down in the second quarter and played better. Our pick
and roll against man-to-man defense has improved and we got
some good looks at the basket on it. The season is coming to a
close. We finish our season next Saturday with the 8th grade
tournament in Albion.
