Welcome to the BSS Biennial Conference, Newcastle Sleep 2015

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 scientific meeting of the British Sleep Society. Situated in Gateshead across the River Tyne from Newcastle, we hope you will enjoy both the amazing Sage venue and the outstanding Scientific Programme.

We have aimed to include many issues that have been topical in sleep medicine over the past two years, including telemedicine, insomnia treatment and the impact of sleep disorders in children. We are delighted to welcome our keynote speaks from around the world. This year also sees two important co-sponsored sessions with the Association for Respiratory and Technology and Physiology (ARTP) and the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (BSDSM). Overall, our aim is to provide a forum in which you can learn, present your own research, catch up with colleagues, and think about how we can move forward to address future challenges. Understanding that sleep and its disorders requires input from many disciplines, we are confident you will find something in the programme to capture your attention and inspire future efforts.

This year we will also make the first BSS Colin Sullivan Sleep Research Award, which has been made possible by the personal generosity of Professor Colin Sullivan, Professor of Medicine, University of Sydney, Australia. Colin is famously known for the invention of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy that has revolutionised the treatment of sleep apnoea and brought relief to literally millions of patients. Successfully translating scientific research into effective clinical treatments, Colin and colleagues developed the thriving commercial enterprise of ResMed whom we are proud to recognise as our Platinum Sponsors. The purpose of the BSS Colin Sullivan Sleep Research Award is to facilitate sleep research in the UK, inspiring young scientists and clinicians to become actively involved in sleep medicine and research. The award will be made at the Conference Dinner on Friday night. Do come and join us.

We are extremely grateful for your continued support of the society and are confident that we will match the success of our previous meeting in Edinburgh two years ago, enhancing both the membership base of the BSS and its financial stability. In the face of general austerity and financial cutbacks in public services, it is especially encouraging that so many companies from a variety of sleep-related areas have shown interest in the meeting and are actively participating.

So, please enjoy the meeting and hear about the latest developments in the exciting field of sleep medicine and science. The North-East and its people are renowned for their hospitality – we can guarantee a warm welcome and can hope for good weather!

Paul Reading, President British Sleep Society

Mary Morrell, President Elect British Sleep Society

ARTP

The ARTP is the sole professional organisation in the UK for practitioners working in respiratory & sleep physiology.

Although all aspects of sleep medicine form our daily work, ARTP is principally experienced and involved in sleep breathing disorders and their treatment. ARTP provides nationally, professionally recognised qualifications and competences in lung function testing and now sleep related procedures. An important function of the ARTP is the provision for CPD and the writing of standards/guidelines, including sleep diagnostics, CPAP therapy and mandibular advancement devices. ARTP organises its Annual Conference and many  training courses including blood gas sampling, respiratory physiology  assessment and sleep disorders. ARTP coordinates spirometry training centres throughout the UK and also writes/publishes textbooks in lung function testing and physiology.

ARTP is also an established member of key regulation organisations for physiologists in the UK. ARTP SLEEP represents practitioners working in Sleep Medicine and is working closely with BSS to establish strong professional  links for staff involved in sleep diagnostics and therapy.

Further details are available from www.artp.org.uk or email [email protected] or telephone 0845 226 3062.

The British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine was established 10 years ago as a non-profit making society for the practice of dental sleep medicine.

Its mission is to raise awareness and establish the ever-increasing role of the dentist in the management of patients suffering with snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

It strives to advance the role of the dentist through educational courses -promoting and raising standards of care and guidelines of practice. Its vision is to encourage and establish close links with other medical societies such as BSS, BLF and NTS and ARTP.

As a society, collaborative and multidisciplinary care of these patients is encouraged and promoted in order to enhance patient experience and reduce the burden of this debilitating disease. The society is keen to work with primary care physicians to help patients who are not suitable for secondary care.

UCB Pharma LtdOur purpose:

Everything we do starts with one simple question: “How can we create more value for people living with severe diseases?”

Meeting patients’ unmet needs

Just because our medicines treat thousands of people around the world doesn’t mean our job is done. For us, it’s vital that we listen to the constantly evolving needs of patients and their families. Working with physicians and healthcare professionals, we are engaging more with patients to better understand their clinical, economic, social and personal needs. What matters most is how they feel in their everyday life as they progress on their healthcare journey. Because we’re not just treating a disease. We’re caring for individual people. Patients inspire us to bring them value through more cutting-edge science, more innovative drugs, and more practical solutions – so that they, and their carers, can get on with their lives.

Continuously advancing science

There is no such thing as an “average patient”. We don’t want to do science for science’s sake, but are seeking to embed the real needs of specific patient populations in our science and innovation process. To achieve this we are leveraging scientific advances and skills in areas such as genetics, biomarkers and human biology. We want to enhance our knowledge of the various expressions of a disease and the real life experience of patients so that ultimately our teams are able to deliver the right drug and the right care to the right patient.

Changing liveswith every breath
