Vineyard• Puligny-Montrachet is a

village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, with its own communal appellation. It is also home to four Grand Cru vineyards and 17 Premier Cru sites. The village was originally called Puligny until 1879, when the Montrachet section was added in homage to its iconic Grand Cru vineyard, Le Montrachet.

History

• Leflaive has been producing this cuvee for over 10 years from a single plot in the heart of the vineyard. The wine undergoes primary and secondary fermentation in barrel and is aged for a total of 12 months in on its lees in 25% new oak. Following a gentle fining the wine is bottled and rests in the cellar for a short period prior to release

• Today, Olivier Leflaive Freres, owning about 37 acres of land, is known as a small negociant of high quality with a focus on the whites from the famous villages of Puligny, Chassagne, and Meursault

History • Corton-Charlemagne is named after the Holy Roman Emperor

Charlemagne, who once owned the hill of Corton on which the vineyards now rest. According to later legend, the vineyards are dedicated to white grape varieties because the emperor's wife preferred white wines as they did not stain his beard. The AOC was created in 1937.

• The vines are located on the higher ground of a hilltop that

stretches between the Burgundian villages of Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. The slopes planted with the most valuable vineyards face southeast on the hilltop, with the land gradually sloping downwards towards the major French highway Route 74.

Chablis

Page 21: The Best of White Burgundy John P. Biestman Richard Adatto A WAC Wine Club Cellar Tasting September 11, 2014

History

The Chablis region is the northernmost wine district of the Burgundy region in France. The grapevines around the town of Chablis are almost all Chardonnay, making a dry white wine renowned for the purity of its aroma and taste. The cool climate of this region produces wines with more acidity and flavors less fruity than Chardonnay wines grown in warmer climates, The wines often have a "flinty" note, sometimes described as "flinty “ and sometimes as "steely”.

History Part 2

• In comparison with the white wines from the rest of Burgundy, Chablis has on average much less influence of oak. Most basic Chablis is unoaked, and vinified in stainless steel tanks. Some wines receive some maturation in oak barrels, but typically the time in barrel and the proportion of new barrels is much smaller than for white wines of Côte de Beaune.

Taste Part 2• The 2010 wines are pure. They

show style and elegance. The good balance between mellowness and acidity provides a lot of freshness and enhances their fruitiness and character

• Floral, butter, grassy, baked green apple, light lees, waxy, matchstick, seashell aromas. Dry, fresh, juicy, elegant palate with green apple, nutty, floral, grassy, spicy, light lees flavors with a touch of gooseberry and seashell. Good now but will age well for 2-3 years
