Did you know that Fr. Jim does a reflection on the Sunday Mass on our Facebook page every week?

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

March 25, 2018 [Christ Jesus] humbled himself,

becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

— Philippians 2:8

Eucharistic Adoration 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month

Start your day with us on Facebook

Due to the deadline of the printing of the bulletin there are no contributions to report for March 18th collection. Collection report will be in April 1st Thank you.

My good friends in Christ Jesus, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the most solemn week of the Church’s liturgical year. During Holy Week, the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his earthly life, beginning with the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

For nearly 40 days, the Christian faithful have practiced the disciplines of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Now the Church invites us to an even deeper spirit of prayer as we follow Christ on his journey to the Cross.

Here are some suggestions offered by the U.S. Bishops for families to use this week as an opportunity to grow in holiness as individuals and as a family.

1. During the week, pray the seven Penitential Psalms together (Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143). These are especially appropriate during Lent. Prayerfully reciting these psalms helps us to recognize our sinfulness, express our sorrow, and ask for God’s forgiveness.

2. Celebrate the Sacrament of Penance if you haven’t already done so during Lent. (Extra times for individual confessions are offered all this week here at the Cathedral.)

3. Attend a service together on Holy Thursday and/or Good Friday. On Thursday, the Church recalls the Last Supper and Jesus’ gift of his Body and Blood.

4. On Holy Saturday, pray for those who will be received into the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil. Pray, too, for a deepening of your own faith and the grace to endure the suffering and celebrate the joys of married life. Have a blessed week. Fr. Jim

Please remember your parish in your planned giving.

Operation Rice Bowls may be brought to the church during Holy Week. You can bring them to the sacristy before or after any of the liturgies. You can also put them in the collection. This is our an-nual almsgiving which supports the work of the Catholic Relief Services.

Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year until the beginning of their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have completed their 14th year of age c. 1252).

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and celebrate more readily his Resurrection (see Sacrosanctum Concilium, 109).

Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year. As always, anyone for whom fasting or abstinence would pose a health risk is excused .

Easter Vigil

A reminder that next Saturday is the Easter Vigil. On this wondrous night the Church asks us to refrain from beginning Mass until the sun goes down. Sunset is around 8:00 pm – so we begin mass at 8:30 pm. There is no 5 pm mass this night. If you have never attended an Easter Vigil – come and see the lighting of the Easter fire, hear the great Scripture stories of our salvation, witness the baptism of adults and their Confirmations. Yes, the liturgy lasts about three hours (but so does a good football game!). All are welcome.

“Wait one hour with Me.”

On Holy Thursday evening after the 7 pm Mass - all are welcome to come and pray in silence with our Lord. The church

will remain open until 12 midnight on this night. Stop by and let the Lord meet you.

Today’s Readings Gospel at the Procession with Palms — Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16). First Reading — In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm — My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22). Second Reading — Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel — The account of Christ’s passion according to Mark (Mark 14:1 — 15:47 )

The contrast between the processional reading in to-day’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occu-pation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
