MY BIKE

The British Bike on the front of this edition of the BBC Knews belongs to

Doug Aretz. It is a 170/173 TR7V Tiger. It is a 1970, “dry sump, oil in the

bag” frame with a 1973 single carb 750 motor.

I had been without a bike for 16 years and really wanted another Triumph

desperately. So in 1986, I saw this bike in the Classic Bike shop on North

Avenue in Milwaukee and had to have it. I have never regretted buying it.

Since owning it, it has had two paint jobs, one top end rebuild, and a frame

restoration. The updates include electronic ignition, bigger tires to put more

rubber on the road, offset rocker arm balls to open the valves a little wider, and

a 21 tooth primary gear for easier highway cruising. The changes “brightened

up” the performance immediately.

This bike has always been a real reliable ride. After riding a 1971 Trident and

a 1998 Sprint Executive, it always amazes me how light, agile and easy to ride

this bike is. I will never sell it.

Doug Aretz, President

British Biker Cooperative

plan is to have four issues this year.

I would like to thank John for his

years of service as editor, and for help-

ing me make the transition into this

position. I will do my best to maintain

the high standard that John set. As in the

past, ideas for improvements are

welcome, as are articles, photos, tech

tips, etc. I need your contributions to

make this an interesting publication.

Some changes have occurred in the

club officer and director positions as

well. Doug Aretz has taken over as

President for Pat Hanson who is now

President Emeritus. Colette Lendowski

is replacing Ron Vance as VP of

Product, Jim Ziemann will replace Dave

Coppens as Secretary, and Marj Inman

will assume Steve Baker’s spot on the

board of directors. I’m sure I speak for

all members in thanking all outgoing

officers and directors for their service

and all new volunteers for stepping up.

Safe Riding,

Mark Fredricks

Welcome to the first issue of the

BBC Knews for 2016. As the new year

begins, you will probably notice a few

changes in the newsletter and the organ-

ization. The only major change to the

newsletter is a picture of a different old

guy standing behind his old British

bike. I have been given the opportunity

to take over the editing of the newslet-

ter, and with John Pendell’s kind

permission, will continue to call this

column “The Editor’s Points and

Plugs” (if it aint broke, don’t fix it). The

format of the newsletter will also

remain pretty much the same, and the

Hopefully in the next newsletter I

will have an end of year report of in-

come and expenses. Right now my time

and energy are focused on my family.

Speaking of family, I would like to

dedicate this Treasurer’s report to my

14 year faithful friend and riding com-

panion. Lucas – Prince of Dogness was

one of the best souls I have ever met

and it was a privilege and a joy to be his

‘mom’. RIP my beautiful boy.

Ride free.

Overall the BBC is in decent finan-

cial shape, the Meeting from Hell was

productive, the calendar is in place, and

Rally coordination in full swing. As I

write this, the snow is melting in north-

ern Wisconsin and while I can’t see the

riding season yet, the smell in the air

sure is hinting it won’t be long now.

Namaste,

Mary

Greetings to my BBC Buds,

2015 has come and gone and I am

happy to report that the Holiday Party

appeared to be a smashing success. The

food on Saturday could have been a bit

better, but we will work on that. The DJ

was great and Bill Pluess made us all

proud and won the ugly sweater contest!

We have booked the BW in Oshkosh for

2016 and reservations and the rate will

remain the same.

vation now, here is the information you

need:

Treasurer’s Report

Page 8: The BBC Knews - British Biker

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Aretz, who thanked

Mary Lange for finding the location of the meeting. Doug also thanked Pat

Hanson for his service over the last 4 years and guiding us through some difficult

issues. The meeting continued with officers reports. It was reported that because

of lower attendance at last year’s rally funding was less. It was decided to not

have a band on Friday night and spend more on a band for Saturday night.

Secretary reported receiving a Christmas card from member Ken Mason who is

recovering from back surgery. The card was passed to all members. VP of

product torch was passed from Ron Vance to Colette Lendowski.

The Wee Willie visor cleaning kit was discussed as a product for us to sell. It

was decided that at $16 it was too pricey for us. Another item under discussion

was a combo Union Jack turtle neck and bandana at $5. This was thought to be a

better product fit for us.

The VP of property reported that the trailer needs annual maintenance. Pat

Hanson said that he would take care of it. There was a discussion about putting

brakes on the trailer and how to pay for installation of them.

The VP of membership reported how many paid members we had last year and

how many were brought in as a result of the special member discount at events.

There was also a discussion of associate membership. No vote was taken as this

is already in the by-laws at a $30 annual fee.

The Webmaster reported that $139.50 is need to retain our domain name and

hosting rights for the next year. He also reported that he was talking about banner

ads for vendors such as Motorcycle Superstore which would bring an extra

source of income for the club. Every time the banner is clicked to the vendor,

BBC will be paid a fee from the vendor.

Our new Editor, Mark Fredricks will continue to publish 4 issues a year. The

first issue will be in February after the Mama Tried Show. It was reported that

BBC sends out 50- 60 hard copies of the news letter at about 71 cents each de-

pending on the size of the issue. This results in a loss to the club of about 14

cents per copy. The total cost of mailing 4 issues is about $292.

The VP of marketing reported that she was working on Team Winnebagoland

becoming a sponsor, she was also working on Royal Enfield. It was decided to

cap race sponsorship a $300 this year.

New business: Taxes paid by the BBC range from $4 to $6 hundred per year

and will be submitted. A change was approved in the By-Laws. Policy 1 Section

was amended to read that updates will be published every 3 months instead of 2.

Also there will be a minimum of 4 updates per year, with the exception of spe-

cial promotions with Board approval.

The calendar of BBC events was discussed. There were a few changes and

additions from last year. Bill Pluess will be handling the Run To The Sun. On

August 13th Colette, Indian and Doug will be hosting a post rally ride at noon.

August 27th is Lumberjack Days in Tigerton, WI. On October 29th Carol and Joe

will be hosting a Halloween party. The Pot Luck dinner is looking for a new

location. If anyone has any suggestions contact Jim Ziemann.

Rally art was discussed and it was decided to feature a side view of a chopper

on the back of the shirt and the BBC flag on the front pocket. Rally flyers will be

handed out for everyone to distribute. The possibility of inviting Indian Motorcy-

cles to the Rally was discussed. It was decided to have 1 campsite award this

year instead of 2. Doug and Mark will be handling the Poker Run this year. No

one but Eagle Cave workers will be allowed to do registration. Volunteers will

be needed to help sell product this year. Joe Schertzl will be in charge of securi-

ty. Brad and Spin will be doing the bike games. The biggest change is that there

will not be a band on Friday night. This will enable us to spend more money for

the Saturday night band. There will be recorded music and a movie to take the

place of the band on Friday. An Entertainment committee consisting of Marj

Inman, Jeff Kelly, Dave Corriveau, and Carol Pratt will be searching for a band

for Saturday night. There is a March 1st deadline.

By-law 4 section 4 was amended to allow electronic voting (e-mail). The

secretary of the BBC will be recording and archiving all votes, electronic and

otherwise.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 P.M.

Respectfully submitted, Jim Ziemann

Introducing, The President of The British Biker Cooperative . . .

What was I thinking? Well . . . I know what I was thinking. The evening of the

Pot Luck Supper at the American Legion Hall in Oak Creek, Pat Hanson, the BBC

President was looking for presidential candidates for the 2015-2016 term and no

one was volunteering. Not that I felt coerced. My wife, Kathy, and I discussed the

possibility of me being president. I was not working at the time of our discussion

and there weren’t any family obligations that I was committing to like the previous

year, and we thought that would be okay. Not to mention the fact that I was a presi-

dential candidate back in the 1990’s and ran against Scott Hermann . . . and lost.

Oh, well.

So maybe this is the time. And as I stood up and Pat looked at me and posed the

question, “Are there any nominees for the office of President?” And I think it was

Colette who said “I nominate Doug Aretz for the office of President and I said, “I

will accept the nomination of President for the BBC. That was it. The End. But

really it is just the beginning.

Pat Hanson made a real effective speech about what being the President of British

Biker Cooperative meant to him. If you want to be immersed in British motorcycle

culture, the BBC is the place. If you want to be around people who have the pas-

sion for British motorcycles, follow races, read all sorts of books and classic motor-

cycle magazines, and find enjoyment in reading the service manual to your 1971

T150 for the twelfth time, the BBC is the place. And . . . there’s always the hot

young chicks hanging around. And monkeys might come flying out of my butt.

Hanson’s speech put my thoughts into perspective because he was right. Who have

been and who are my good friends from the pat 20 plus years? People in the BBC.

What is one event that I never fail to attend year in and year out? The annual BBC

Rally. And the other annual event that I very rarely miss . . . the BBC Holiday

Party. Not to mention all the BBC Color Rides, Runs to The Sun, No Big Deal

Picnics, packing parties and all other parties at my good BBC friends’ house Steve

and Deb Shelvik.

With all that being said, why not be President? So here I am and here I will be for

the next two years and maybe, but only maybe, for two more years after that

(I never said THAT, honey!).

And to all BBC’ers who are reading this, I will do my best to keep the BBC going

as an organization dedicated to British motorcycling. I will represent all members

and the organization in a manner that is respectful in the British motorcycling

culture, and I will listen to the ideas and thoughts of the directors and officers when

I have to make decisions. And have fun doing it.

That’s why I accepted the nomination for President of the British Biker Coopera-

tive.

See you on the road and ride safe.

Doug Aretz, President

British Biker Cooperative

Mama Tried (continued from page 4)

Page 16: The BBC Knews - British Biker

When I was 16 my good friend Evan had a Triumph chopper that he acquired

from an old biker. Ever since then I had an itch to build one. Two years ago at

the Walnecks Swap Meet in Woodstock, IL I found a front loop. That started the

whole ordeal. I went home and ordered up a hardtail. I made many trips to MCC

in South Milwaukee to ask questions and acquire various parts including a front

end and rear wheel. I ending up trading a panhead chopper frame and girder front

end for an engine. The bike was slowly coming together. I approached Pat

Hanson about taking his classes at MATC. Next thing I know, the motor is in a

million pieces!! Haha! Working hand in hand with Pat really opened my mind up

to so many different things. If you have ever been curious as to how a engine

functions, I hihly recommend taking one of his classes. I finally finished the bike

and debuted it this year at the Mama Tried Motorcycle show in Milwaukee, WI.

Thank you!

AXLE CAP TORQUE

PROBLEM: Some workshop manuals cite incorrect data for 4-bolt front fork axle caps,

stating that 23-25 Ft. Lbs. of torque are necessary.

SOLUTION: The steel fork leg with a 2-bolt pattern (fig. D) requires 23-25 Ft. Lbs. of

torque, aluminum fork legs tubes with a 4-bolt pattern, whether disc (fig. A) or

(fig. C) require only 15 Ft. Lbs. of torque. Over tightening can cause damage and

possible fracturing, causing serious handling issues and possible wheel separation.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Klempf’s British Parts offers two variants for 4-bolt alloy front

fork axle caps, a more heavy-duty replacement (fig. A and C) or a reproduction

replacement (fig. B). We recommend the heavy-duty option.
