Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we celebrate Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan, let us reflect on the glorious teaching of Christ through His Church about this all-important Sacrament. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”

1223 … Jesus begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20).

1224 Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to “fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus' gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying. The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation, and the Father revealed Jesus as his "beloved Son."

1226 From the very day of Pentecost the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” … Always, Baptism is seen as connected with faith: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household," …

1253 Baptism is the sacrament of faith. But faith needs the community of believers. It is only within the faith of the Church that each of the faithful can believe. The faith required for Baptism is not a perfect and mature faith, but a beginning that is called to develop. …

1254 For all the baptized, children or adults, faith must grow after Baptism. … Preparation for Baptism leads only to the threshold of new life. Baptism is the source of that new life in Christ from which the entire Christian life springs forth.

1255 For the grace of Baptism to unfold, the parents’ help is important. So too is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized – child or adult on the road of Christian life. …

**(Note that a godfather or a godmother absolutely must be a practicing Catholic in order to be admitted as a godparent. It is not merely an honor but a duty to help pass on the Catholic faith to the child.)**

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

2020 — the Year of St. Joseph

This weekly column will give you information about St. Joseph to ponder and to discuss throughout the year. Get to know St. Joseph! Pope Francis proclaimed the Year of St. Joseph in an apostolic letter titled Patris Corde, which means “With a Father’s Heart.” Pope Frances writes: “With a Father’s Heart: that is how Joseph loved

Jesus, whom all four Gospels refer to as ‘the son of Joseph’… We know that Joseph was a lowly carpenter (cf. Mt 13:55), betrothed to Mary (cf. Mt 1:18; Lk 1:27). He was a ‘just man’ (Mt 1:19), ever ready to carry out God’s will as revealed to him in the Law (cf. Lk 2:22.27.39) and through four dreams (cf. Mt 1:20; 2:13.19.22). After a long and tiring journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, he beheld the birth of the Messiah in a stable, since ‘there was no place for them’ elsewhere (cf. Lk 2:7). He witnessed the adoration of the shepherds (cf. Lk 2:8-20) and the Magi (cf. Mt 2:1-12), who represented respectively the people of Israel and the pagan peoples.” (Picture from wikicommons)

Good and Faithful Servant

Suicide touches everyone—all ages, sexes, and incomes; all racial, ethnic, and religious groups; and in all parts of the country.

Suicide takes the lives of about 38,000 Americans each year (CDC, 2010).

About 465,000 people per year are seen in emergency departments for self-injury (CDC, 2010).

Each year over 8 million adults think seriously about taking their life, and over 1 million make an attempt (NSDUH, 2011).

However, there is help and hope when individuals, faith communities, and local community groups join forces to address suicide as a preventable public health problem. Recognizing this serious problem, St. Mary’s Stephen Ministry has invited Bonnie Fulghum of Mental Health of America, Aiken to speak on the topic of Suicide at their January meeting on Thursday, January 14th at 6:00pm. Because of parish interest, the talk will be livestreamed on St. Mary Help of Christian’s Facebook page.

Look for signs of immediate risk for suicide

There are some behaviors that may mean a person is at immediate risk for suicide. These three should prompt you to take action right away (adapted from National Suicide Prevention Lifeline):

1. Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself 2. Looking for a way to kill oneself, such as searching

online or obtaining a gun 3. Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to

live

Other behaviors may also indicate a serious risk, especially if the behavior is new; has increased; and/or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change:

Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain Talking about being a burden to others Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly Sleeping too little or too much Withdrawing or feeling isolated Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge Displaying extreme mood swings

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline The Lifeline is a 24-hour toll-free phone line for people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The phone number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
