    The Baptism of the Lord

    January 10, 2021

  • Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord and the beginning of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. The event that starts us off is the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The baptism of the Lord also reminds us, of course, of our own baptism. The Church teaches us that baptism not only lets us participate in Jesus’ victory over sin and death, but calls us to our own personal holiness. It is in this sacrament that we receive our call to be saints! Jesus shows us the way. Since Jesus was sinless, He didn’t need to be baptized. However, as a good leader and one who entered into the life of His people, He did it to show us what we need to do. For the rest of us, we need to be baptized to be washed of original sin and welcomed into the life of Christ. Not only that, but our baptism is something that plants our roots of faith in a parish com-munity. During the baptism, it is not just the parents and Godparents who make the promises to help their child grow in the faith; it is all of our responsibilities. Through baptism, we gain more brothers and sisters that we need to care for and encourage in their lives of faith. We need to walk with them and help them to avoid evil and to do what God has commanded us: to love Him, and to love one another. The Baptism of the Lord begins the first period of Ordinary Time. This will last until Ash Wednes-day. During this time, the priest wears green vestments, which symbolizes life and hope. Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary. It is a time of conversion, maturation, and quiet growth. It com-prises the longest time on the liturgical calendar when we consider the fullness of Jesus’ teachings and miracles while on this earth. These are two big events for us. Take some time to dig out your baptism photos or the photos of your children’s baptisms. Share with them the story of why you decided to have them baptized. If you are a Godparent, make sure you call your Godchild. Encourage them in their faith and help them to mature as sons and daughters of God. “Praise to you, God the Holy Spirit, for you anointed Christ at his baptism in the waters of Jordan, so that we might all be baptized in you.” (The Rite of Baptism) God Bless you and your family, Father Adam

    The Waters of Baptism:

When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    Steward Discipleship:

“And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” - MARK 1:11

Through our baptism, Stewards are daughters and sons of God. We are disciples of Jesus. As true disciples we are called to actively participate in our Catholic faith, not just be mere bystanders. This means working in collaboration with Holy Spirit and discerning how we are being asked to use our gifts. Using our gifts for the benefit of others and not just for our own interests and comfort.
