YAJNAVALKYA

The Importance of Yogas

THERE IS A COMMON IMPRESSION evenamongst the lay people that one’s prosperity in life is

purely because of the possible presence of some powerfulyoga in his or her horoscope. When one is prosperousbeyond his means, it is common knowledge that peopleused to say that he or she is running the Sukra dasa.Though both these impressions have some sort of logic intheir assumptions, even under the usual astrologicalinferences, they need not be absolutely acceptable orindubitable. The presence of some good yoga in thehoroscope can, at times, prove deceptive when theexpected good results may be totally conspicuous by theirabsence. Likewise Sukra dasa need not be exemplaryfor all. The assessment of the effectiveness of any yogaor the running dasa, in any horoscope, may require notonly a balanced judgment in its exploration but also keeninvestigation into the propensity of the concerned planetscontributing to any special combination or compelled torule any particular period in one’s life. For the present“Chinta” this scribe would like to confine himself into thetopic of Yogas.

Our ancient astrological texts give a plethora of planetarycombinations which go under a popular parlance calledYogas. Any particular planetary disposition or specificcombinations of them that are capable of bringing forthexplicit results can be broadly defined as Yoga. PrasnaMarga defines it succinctly as:

Grahaanaam Sthithibhedena Purusham Yojayanthihi

Phalai: Karmasamudbhootai: Itiyoga: Prakeertitha:

Though these Yogas are of sorts, a broad classificationcan bring them under, as formed by planets alone, betweenplanets and houses, between planets and rasis or anycombination of the above, wholly or severally. It is true,in a strict sense, that Yogas are combinations of planets. However, all such combinations of planets need notnecessarily attain status of any identifiable Yoga. SuchYogas, specifically identified, can be beneficial or

malevolent, grading from most powerful or potent, to themere feeble or fragile ones.

The factors influencing any ‘Yoga’ are multifarious. Theydepend on the involved signs, the extra influences theplanet or planets concerned derive, their potency and otherallied factors. They can be classified under two majorgroups, one as beneficial or conferring luck or adrushta( )and the other as inimical as bringing down misfortunesor sufferings or arishta ( ).

Among the lucky ones there can be Rajayogas conferringpower or position, Dhanayogas conferring wealth andaffluence and Jnanayogas making one blessed with higherknowledge, spirituality and the like. However, it must beborne in mind that the numerical strength of yogas foundin any horoscope need not make any native praiseworthy. In many cases, it can so happen that, despite theirtechnical presence in numbers, only few could practicallyoperate. Therefore the interpretation of yogas found inany chart is itself a great task involving elaborate studyand judicious appraisal.

Yogas can have various dimensions. Their effects candiffer depending on the ascendants of the differenthoroscopes, their weakness and strength. Beneficsconcentrating at pivotal places, in any horoscope, cangenerally bring in beneficial yogas. On the other hand, the malefics, in similar situations, can cause the oppositeresults. Benefics in the ascendant or the 2nd can befavourable. For different lagnas different planets can takea specific role as yogakaraka or otherwise. Their relativestrength and weakness will only determine the efficacyof any particular yoga that they are responsible inconstituting, as good or bad.

The mere presence of an identified yoga in any chart neednot necessarily bring forth the results attributed to it, unlessthe constituent planets do get fortified by association oraspect of other favourable planets or occupation in a houseof benefic. A simple method to assess the strength ofany yogakaraka planet will be, as follows, as suggested

IN THE EARLIER PART of our article we saidthat human life is divided into four parts. Wediscussed the first part relating to

Brahmacharya and talked about balya (8 years) andyavana (17 years) of Brahmacharya. We will nowtry to understand another important stage of humanlife, viz., Grihastashrama in relation to marriage.

Institution of MarriageOnce the youngster has finished his/her study andsettled with a job, the next logical step is to getmarried.

Marriage is an institution of a sacred bond between amale and a female that understands the equality ofthe spouse in respect of each other. Marriage is notmeant to be for meager sense gratification but is atradition of responsibility between two individuals. It is not a live-in relationship (civil contract) wherethe couple end the contract at each other’s will andfancy. Marriage aims to understand the sanctity ofthe relationship where the joys and sorrows of thefamily are shared equally to make the home a placeof health, harmony and happiness. he householderphase of life is when one lives with spouse andchildren, fulfilling worldly interests and duties. Thisstage of becoming a householder and a home makeris a time of loving the spouse, sharing pains andpleasures of family life, regulating one’s life in theinterests of the next generations and spending timefor exercise, meditation and prayer too.

The first step of the parents is to search for the bride/groom based on aspects of physical and mentalfitness, heredity, sexual compatibility, social,

economic and cultural equalities. Marriages betweenthe same ‘gotra’ are not favoured and the reason couldbe the possible dysgenic influence on the futuregenerations. Once the first step of selection is done, next comes the aspects of astrological matching.

Three astro aspects have to be considered:1. Ayu – Longevity2. Strength of house3. Compatibility

The first step of selecting horoscopes for marriageis to look into the ayu – longevity of the would bespouse. The span of life (of 100 years) is dividedinto four divisions. The texts say that Balarishta isupto age 8, Alpayu upto 32 years, Madhyayu upto75 years and over that Purnayu. However thisscribe feels Madhyayu can be taken upto 60 yearsand Purnayu over that.

The following combinations generally indicatePurnayu:1. If ascendant lord aspects the ascendant, lord

of 8th aspects 8th and Jupiter is in a quadrant(Kendra).

2. If the first six houses are occupied by beneficsand the next six with malefic.

3. If Jupiter is in a quadrant from the ascendantlord and no malefics in the quadrants.

4. If Jupiter is in exaltation and the ascendant isCancer and one or more planets are exalted.

5. If ascendant lord and the Sun are in the 10thhouse, Saturn in the ascendant and Jupiter inthe 4th.

6. Jupiter is in the ascendant and Saturn and theMoon in the 10th.

THE FIELD OF ACTIVITY or the profession of aperson depends upon the positions of various planets

in the horoscope. The horoscope in general Indicates thenatural tendencies, aptitude and skills of the native. It alsodenotes the degree of success he can achieve through hisown efforts as well as with Divine help.

Politicians and diplomats are highly respected people asthey guide the destiny of nations. An attempt is made hereto find out the astrological combinations in the case ofpeople, who have made politics their career. Some generalastrological observations and common combination in thehoroscope of international politicians have been discussedhere.

In the horoscope of politicians and diplomas in generalthe Ascendant, the Ascendant lord or the Moon occupiesthe signs Cancer, Leo, Libra or Sagittarius. Out of thesefour signs Cancer and Leo are the royal signs, moreconcerned with the ruling classes. Libra is an intellectualsign and Sagittarius is a fiery sign giving the necessaryfire and fighting spirit to politicians. Let us now brieflystudy the natural characteristics of these signs, whichsupplement the natural tendencies of a politician.

CancerDr. B.V. Raman has given the following characteristicsof this sign in Hindu Predictive Astrology: “Very intelligentbright, industrious and sympathetic. Their extremesensitiveness renders them nervous and queer. They arevery talkative, self-reliant and unbending.” These traitsare quite in resonance with politics as a career. They arelovers of justice and fairplay. This sign is symbolised by acrab. They have a prophetic nature. They can preach orspeak in public and carry the gathering with them.

The lord of Cancer is the Moon which is always changing. So Cancer natives and have a changeful life-in tune withpolitics, which is the most inconsistent profession. TheMoon gives them fertile imagination and an adventurousspirit. They can adapt to other’s nature and quickly absorbother ideas. They are emotional and oversensitive. As

Cancer is the natural significator of the public, natives ofthis sign achieve success in politics with public help. Thewaxing and waning nature of the Moon is reflected in theworking of Cancer-borns. On some occasions they aretimid and on others, they become very courageous. Theirtemper is also changeable. Fear of criticism makes themdiplomatic and conventional.

LeoDr.B.V. Raman says that Leo natives are bold andrespectful in temperament. They possess the knack ofadapting themselves to any conditions of life. They arerather ambitious and sometimes avaricious too. They areindependent thinkers. They struggle throughout their lifefor success. Their ambitions remain unfulfilled to someextent.

Leo is a kingly sign. These natives are noble, large hearted, magnanimous and generous. The Sun is necessary for alllife and vegetation. But whenever the Sun becomes furious,it destroys them. This is a characteristic property ofpoliticians. So Leo-borns are helpful to mankind andremove their ignorance. This sign represents theGovernment. So the activity and the profession of Leopersons is intimately related to the government. They aremore or less silent by nature. They hear everythingpatiently and pay heed to every rumour. Their judgementis wise. The natural characteristic of Leo persons is thatthey always forgive and forget the mistakes anddrawbacks of others. This is a useful characteristic forpoliticians. They love to be honoured, but they have nosense of false prestige. Since Leo is a fiery and fixed signit confers authority and ambition and leadership. Also theymay appear to be obstinate and unbending.

LibraAs per Dr. Raman, Librans have keen observation andforesight. Firm in conviction and unmoved by meanmotives, they are more idealists than realists and oftenindulge in building castles in the air. They are not sensitiveto what other say of them. But as political leaders, they
