MEDITATION

ON TODAY’S READINGS The Ascension of the Lord

They . . . returned to Jerusalem with great joy. (Luke 24:52) “Parting is such sweet sorrow,” as Juliet said to Romeo. Isn’t this the way many farewells go? Whether you’re

sending a child off to make their way in the world or leaving a grandparent after a visit, saying good-bye can be bittersweet. The sweetness lies in your love for them; the bitterness, in leaving them.

Surprisingly, Jesus’ apostles do not weep at his ascension. Quite the opposite, Luke tells us that they returned to Jerusalem—the very place where Jesus was executed—“with great joy” (24:52). Such a display of exuberance can make the apostles appear unrelatable, almost superhuman. What about their deep human connection with Jesus? Didn’t they feel sad that after overcoming death, the greatest separation there is, Jesus decided to leave them anyway?

Of course they were sad. But more than anything else, they were filled with joy. They were confident that they would one day follow where Jesus had gone, and then they would be reunited forever. So their hope of seeing him again made their sorrow sweet.

This is the key to our joy as well. By faith, we know that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us in heaven. But it can still feel as if he has just moved on and left us on our own. One way to counter that sense of aloneness is to imagine Jesus in heaven right now. Think about how he has opened heaven to you, a place you could never reach on your own. Imagine him standing with his Father, your Father. Picture him preparing a place just for you. See the smile on his face as he thinks about opening the doors to your new home and welcoming you in.

Jesus has ascended to heaven and longs for all God’s children to join him. Until then, he never stops interceding for you and pouring out a constant stream of grace. All so that we can one day taste the sweetness of heaven.

SUMMER IN THE CITY CAMPAIGN Epiphany Catholic Church is pleased to support the John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, the primary provider of food for the pantries in the city’s poorest parishes: St. Thomas More, St. Luke, St. Vincent de Paul, and Holy Name. The 6th Annual Summer in the City Food Drive, with the support of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, will be collected at our parish the weekend of June 15-16. MEMORIAL GARDEN FUNDRAISER Epiphany Catholic Church is selling commemorative, laser-engraved bricks, which will form a Memorial Garden in the front yard of the rectory before the statue of the Blessed Mother. Each 4”x8” brick can accommodate 3 lines of English, Korean, or Lithuanian text, limited to 18 characters per line (including spaces and punctuation). “우리는 서로 지체입니다”(에페 4,25)

소셜 네트워크 커뮤니티에서 인간 공동체로

사 랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 통신망(Net)은 우리 시

대의 자원이며, 한때는 전혀 생각지도 못했던 지

식과 관계의 원천이 되고 있습니다. 소셜 네트워크는 우리가

서로 더 친밀한 관계를 맺고 서로를 더 잘 알며 서로 도움을

주게 합니다. 다른 한편, 개인과 그 권리들을 마땅히 존중하

지 않고, 정치나 경제의 차원에서 이득을 꾀하려는 목적으로

개인 정보를 조작하여 사용하는 데에도 일조하고 있음을 인

식하여야 합니다.

연대의 그물망을 이룬 공동체(community)는 책임 있는

언어 사용을 바탕으로 하는 상호 경청과 대화가 필요합니다.

오늘날의 상황에서 소셜 네트워크 커뮤니티가 공동체와 같은

의미는 아닙니다. 네크워크가 긍정적으로 이용되도록 북돋워

야 하는 책임과 또 그 가능성은 우리 모두에게도 있습니다.

접속의 증대만으로는 상호 이해를 증진하기에 충분하지 않다

는 것이 분명합니다. 그렇다면, 우리가 어떻게 온라인 네트워

크에서도 서로를 향한 책임을 깨달아 공동체의 참다운 정체

성을 회복할 수 있겠습니까?

바오로 성인은 “그러므로 거짓을 벗어 버리고 ‘저마다 이

웃에게 진실을 말하십시오.’ 우리는 서로 지체입니다.”(에페

4,25)하고 말합니다. 몸과 지체의 비유는, 우리 정체성이 친

교와 ‘서로 다름’에 기초한다는 사실을 성찰하도록 이끌어 줍

니다. 우리 그리스도인들은, 우리가 모두 머리이신 그리스도

의 한 몸을 이루는 지체들임을 압니다. 이는 우리가 다른 사

람들을 잠재적 경쟁자로 여기지 않고 우리 원수들마저도 인

격적 존재로 받아들이도록 도와줍니다. 자기 자신을 정의하

는 데에는 더 이상 적대자가 필요하지 않습니다. 우리가 그리

스도께 배우는 포용의 눈길은 서로 다름을 새로운 방식으로

바라보도록, 곧 서로 다름이 관계와 친밀함의 필수 요소이자

조건임을 깨닫도록 이끌어 주기 때문입니다.

인간 개인들 사이의 이해와 소통을 위한 이러한 능력은

하느님 위격들 사이에 이루는 사랑의 친교에 기초를 둔 것입

니다. 하느님께서는 우리와 소통하시고자 또 우리에게 당신

자신을 알려 주시고자 우리 언어를 취하시어 역사 안에서 인

류와 참되고 고유한 대화를 이루어 주셨습니다(제2차 바티칸

공의회, 계시 헌장, 2항 참조)

현재 상황에서 우리 모두는 관계에 노력을 기울이고, 인

간의 관계적 본성을 네트워크 안에서 네트워크를 통해서도

옹호하도록 요청받고 있습니다. 더욱이 우리 그리스도인들은

신앙인의 정체성을 드러내는 그러한 친교를 보여 주도록 부

름받고 있습니다. 실제로 신앙은 그 자체로 관계이며 만남입

니다.

몸과 지체들의 이미지는 소셜 웹의 이용

이 몸과 마음, 눈과 눈길과 숨결을 통해 살

아 있는 살과 뼈로 이루어진 만남을 보완할

뿐이라는 사실을 일깨워 줍니다. 통신망이

그런 만남을 연장시키고 기대할 때, 한 가족

이 통신망을 활용하여 더욱 친밀해지고 식

탁에 마주 앉아 서로의 눈을 바라볼 때, 교회 공동체가 네트

워크를 통해 활동을 계획하고 성찬례를 함께 거행할 때, 통신

망을 통해 물리적으로 멀리 있는 이들의 미덕이나 아픔에 관

한 이야기와 경험을 공유할 수 있는 기회를 갖고, 우리를 하

나 되게 하는 것을 재발견하면서 함께 기도하고 함께 선을 추

구할 때, 통신망은 친교의 자원이 됩니다.

이러한 방식으로 우리는 진단을 통하여 치유로 나아가는

것, 곧 대화와 만남과 미소와 다정한 표현을 향한 길을 여는

것입니다. 이것이 바로 우리가 원하는 네트워크입니다. 네트

워크는 옭아매는 것이 아니라 해방시키고, 자유로운 사람들

의 친교를 보호하고자 만들어진 것입니다. 교회는 그 자체로

성찬 친교로 엮어진 네트워크입니다. 성찬 친교에서는 ‘좋아

요’가 아니라 진리, ‘아멘’을 바탕으로 일치가 이루어집니다.

‘아멘’으로, 누구든지 그리스도의 몸에 일치하고 다른 이를

받아들이는 것입니다.

○ 사람들을 사랑하시어 말씀이신 성자를 보내주신 하느님,

성자 예수 그리스도께서는

몸소 구원의 기쁜 소식을 전하시며

특별히 대중매체 종사자들과 관리자들이

바른 양심을 지니고 매체들을 향락과 정치 도구로

그릇되게 쓰는 일이 없게 하소서.

올바른 지식과 분별력을 갖추어

주님 뜻에 어긋나고

인간의 품위를 해치는 온갖 것을 피하고

오로지 주님의 영광과

모든 이의 유익을 위하여 쓰게 하소서.
