omuchhasbeenwrittenanddiscussed latelyabouthealingand themind.The twoare, of course, intricately connected, and understanding about the mind-body

connectionhasnowmergedintothecommonculture.Mostpeopleareatleastawareofitinsomeway, through some book ormagazine article or TV or radio show. IsraelRegardiewrotebrilliantlyonthesubjectoverseventyyearsago,andhewroteabout themind-bodyconnectioninawaythatnooneelsehaswrittenbeforeorsince.

I discoveredThe Art of True Healing about twenty years ago, and it has been myconstantcompanioneversince.AssoonasIdidtheMiddlePillarmeditation,Ihadnodoubtthateverypremise in thebook,andeverypromise in thebook, is true—and,asyouwillsee,thebookdealswithnotonlyphysicalhealing,buthealingeveryaspectofourlives.Dr.Regardiesaysitbest:

Everysinglereligionaffirmsthisfact.Allformsofmentalorspiritualhealingpromisethesamething.Evenpsychoanalysisandotherformsoftherapyemploythishealingpower:Theinsightandunderstandingthateffectivetherapycanbringreleasestensionsofvariouskinds,and through this release the healing power latentwithin and natural to the human systemoperatesmorefreely.

Eachofthesesystemsteachesitsownspecializedmethodsofthinkingorcontemplationorprayerthatwill,accordingtothetermsoftheirownphilosophies,renewourbodiesandeventransformourentireenvironment.

Veryfewofthesesystems,however,actuallyfulfillinacompletewaythehighpromisesthey have made. There is little understanding of the practical means whereby the forcesunderlyingtheuniverseandpermeatingeverycellofourbodiescanbeutilizedanddirectedtowardthecreationofanewheavenandanewearth.

Eachoneofushasthepowertobegintheprocessofreconstructionforourselves;eachoneofuscandiscovertheforcethatcanbringustruehealingofourbodiesandminds.

Thecentralquestion,then,ishowarewetobecomeawareofthisforce?Whatisitsnature?Whatisthemechanismwherebywecanuseit?

Agreatmanydifferent systemshaveevolved,widelydifferingprocessesbywhichwemay discover the presence of such a power. Meditation, prayer, affirmation, invocation,emotionalexaltation,andotherformsofdeclarationmadeatrandomupontheuniverseortheUniversalMindarea fewof themethods.Allhave this in common:By turning the fiery,penetratingpowerof themind inwardupon itself, and exaltingour emotional system to acertainpitch,wemaybecomeawareofpreviouslyunknowncurrentsofforce,currentsthatare almost electric in their interior sensation, and that are healing and integrating in theireffect.

It is thewilleduseofsuchaforcethat iscapableofbringinghealthtobodyandmind.Wheneffectivelydirected,itactslikeamagnet:Itattractstoeveryoneofuswhoemploysthesemethodsthethingsthatwerequireorferventlydesireorthatareneededforourfurtherevolution.

The fundamental, underlying idea of this powerful healing system is this: In the ambientatmospheresurroundingusandpervadingthestructureofeachoneofourbody’scellsisaforce, a fieldofenergy.This force isomnipresent and infinite; it is aspresent in themostinfinitesimalobjectas it is in themostproportion-staggeringfar reachesof theknownand

unknownuniverse.Thisforceislifeitself.Nothinginthevastexpanseofspaceisdead.Everythingpulsateswithvibrantlife;even

thesubatomicparticlesoftheatomarealive.The forceof life is infinite;weare saturated, permeated throughand throughwith this

force, thisenergy. It constitutesourhigher self; it isour linkwith theentireuniverse; it isGodwithinus.Everymoleculeofourphysicalsystemispermeatedwiththedynamicenergyofthisforce;eachcellinourbodycontainsitinabundance.

Whenweconsiderthisforce,whenwebecomeawareofit,wearethenbroughtfacetofacewith theenigmaticproblemunderlyingalldisease: Ifweare filledwith thisenergy,and ifthis energy is limitless, howcanwebecomedepletedof this healing energy, andbecomeunhealthyandsick?

Whatisfatigue?Howcantherebedepletionofourenergyifvitalityandcosmiccurrentsofforcepourthroughusconstantly,saturatingourmindandbodywithpower?

Essentially, it is because we offer so much resistance to its flow through us that webecome tiredand ill.Howdowemanage todefy theuniverse?Howareweable toofferresistanceandoppositiontotheveryforcethatunderliesourcontinuallyevolvinguniverse?

Therearemanycausesofthisresistancetotheinwardflowofthespirit:Mostofuswereraisedtobecomplacentandconfusedandevencowardlyfromchildhoodonintoadulthood,andmostofushaveafalseperceptionofthenatureoflife.

Thefactthatthisisgenerallyunconsciousdoesn’tmatter—areanyofusreallyawareofall the involuntaryprocessesgoingonwithinus?Areanyofus consciousof the intricatemechanismofourmentalprocesses,andoftheprocessesbywhichourfoodisassimilatedanddigested,andourbloodiscirculated,bringingnourishmenttoeverycell?

Allthesearepurelyinvoluntaryprocesses,justas,toalargedegree,ourresistancestolifearepurelyinvoluntary.Wehavesurroundedourselveswithcrystallizedshellsofprejudicesand ill-conceived versions of reality; we have shielded ourselves with amental armor sodenseitaffordsnoentrancetothelightoflifethatsurroundsusandenvelopsus.

Nowonderwebecomesick,impotent,helpless,poor!Nowondertheaverageindividualissounabletoadequatelydealwithlife!

TheFirstStep:UnderstandingThefirst step toward freedomandhealth isaconscious realizationof thevast reservoirofenergy in which we live and move and have our being. When we reflect upon thisrepeatedly, andmake repeatedmental efforts tomake this part and parcel of our outlookupon life, part of the hard, inflexible shell of themindbreaks down and dissolves.Then,inevitably, life and spirit pour abundantly through us. Health spontaneously arises, and anewlifebeginsasourpointofviewundergoesthisradicalchange.

Moreover,itappearsthatwecreateanenvironmentinwhichweattractjustthosepeoplewhocanhelpinvariousways,andthethingswehavelongedformanifestinourlives.

Thefirststepisapurelymentalone,involvingachangeinourperceptionoflife,sothat

werealizeweareinthemidstofavastreservoirofhealingenergy.Thesecondstepliesinasomewhatdifferentdirection:It involveslearningaprocessof

regulatedbreathing—quite a simpleprocess, and, asyouwill see,quite aneffectiveonewhenusedrepeatedly.

TheSecondStep:RhythmicBreathingIflifeisallaboutus,all-penetratingandall-pervasive,whatismorereasonablethanthattheveryairwebreathefromonemomenttothenextshouldbehighlychargedwithvitality?Tobesttakeadvantageofthis,weneedtotakethetimeperiodicallytoregulateourbreathinginacalm,simpleway,andtocontemplatethatlifeistheactiveprincipleintheatmosphere.

We should practice this rhythmic breathing at fixed periods of the day, in a relaxedmanner,withnostrenuousforcingofthemind,noovertaxingofthewill.Alleffortmustbegentleandeasy;thenskilliseasilyobtained.

Sitcomfortably,orliedown,flatonyourback,inaperfectlyrelaxedstate.Ifsitting,thehandsmaybefoldedinthelap,ortheymayrestcomfortablyonthethighs,palmsupward. If lying down, your handsshould rest comfortably at your sides, palmsupward.

Let thebreath flow inwhilementallycountingveryslowly,one…two…three…four….Thenexhale,countingthesamebeat.Itisfundamentalandimportantthatweshouldmaintaintheinitialrhythmwehavestarted,whetheritbeatafour-beatcountoraten-beatcountoranyotherconvenientone.Foritistheveryrhythmitselfthatisresponsiblefortheeasyabsorptionofvitalityfromwithout,andtheaccelerationofthedivinepowerwithin.

Unchangingrhythmismanifesteverywhereintheuniverse.Itisalivingprocesswhosepartsmoveandaregoverned inaccordancewithcyclical laws.Lookat thesun, thestars,andtheplanets.Allmovewithincomparablegrace,withasteady, inexorablerhythm.It isonly humankind that has wandered, in its ignorance and self-complacency, far from thedivine cycles of things.We have interfered with the rhythmic process that is inherent innature.Andhowsadlywehavepaidforit!

Throughquiet,rhythmicbreathing,wecanattuneourselvesoncemoretotheintelligentpower that functions throughout nature.Our periods of rhythmic breathing can be at anytimeofthedayornightwhenthereislittlelikelihoodofdisturbance.

Weshouldcultivateabovealltheartofrelaxationduringourrhythmicbreathing:

Learntoaddresseachtensedmusclefromtoetoheadasyousitinacomfortablechairorlieflatonyourbackinbed.Tellitdeliberatelytoloosenitstensionandceasefromitsunconsciousconstriction.Thinkofyourbloodflowingcopiouslytoeachorganinresponse to your command, carrying life and nourishment everywhere, producing astateofglowing,radianthealth.

Begin your rhythmic breathing, then add this preliminary exercise, slowly andwithouthaste.Gradually,asthemindaccustomsitselftotheidea,thelungsspontaneouslywilltakeup the rhythm. In a fewminutes it will have become automatic.Thewhole process thenbecomesextremelysimpleandpleasurable.

It isdifficult tooverestimatetheimportanceoreffectivenessofthissimpleexercise.Asthelungs take up the rhythm, automatically inhaling and exhaling to a measured beat, theycommunicateitandgraduallyextendittoallthesurroundingcellsandtissues.Justasastonethrownintoapondsendsoutwidelyexpandingripplesandconcentriccirclesofmotion,sodoesthemotionofthelungs.Inafewminutes,thewholebodyisvibratinginunisonwiththeir movement. Every cell seems to vibrate sympathetically.And very soon, the wholeorganismcomestofeelasifitwereaninexhaustiblestoragebatteryofpower.Thesensation—anditmustbeasensation—isunmistakable.

Simple as it is, the exercise is not to be taken lightly or underestimated. It is upon themasteryofthisveryeasytechniquethat therestof thissystemstands.Master itfirst.Doitenoughtimessothatyoucancompletelyrelaxandproducetherhythmicbreathinginafewseconds.

he next principlewemust consider is fundamental and highly significant. It is theinability to realize or thoroughly to have grasped its importance that underlies the

frequentfailureofmanydifferenthealingsystems,whetherphysical,mental,emotional,orspiritual.Justastherearespecializedorgansfortheperformanceofspecializedfunctionsinour physical body, there are also corresponding centers in our mental, emotional, andspiritualnature.

Justastheteeth,stomach,liver,andintestinesaredevisedandevolvedbynaturefortheassimilationanddigestionoffood, therearesimilarcenters intheothercomponentsofournature.Themouth receives food,digestionoccurs in the stomachand small intestine, andthereisanapparatusforrejectingwasteproductsandtoxins.Inourpsychicnaturealsoarefocalcentersfortheabsorptionofspiritualpowerfromtheuniverse,andothercentersforitsdistributionandcirculation.

Thedynamicenergyandpowerenteringus fromwithout isnotuniformor alike in itsvibratoryrate.Itmaybeoftoohighavoltage,sotospeak,forustoreadilyendure.Withinus,therefore,isacertainpsychicapparatuswherebyvariouscosmiccurrentsofenergymaybeassimilatedanddigested,theirvoltagesteppeddownoradjustedtothehumanlevel.Theprocessofbecomingawareofthepsychicapparatus,andusingtheenergyitgenerates,isanintegralpartofthishealingsystem.

Mostprayerandcontemplativemethodsunconsciouslyemploy these innercenters.Wewould bewiser and farmore efficient todeliberately employ this spiritual power and thecentersitflowsthrough.

TheEnergyCentersTherearefivemajorspiritualenergycenters.Sincewemustnamethemandidentifytheminsomeway,letmegivethemthemostnoncommittalandnoncompromisingtitlesimaginable,sothatnosystemofprejudicemaybeerecteduponthem.Forthesakeofconvenience,wemaynamethefirstoneSpirit,andthesucceedingonesAir,Fire,Water,andEarth.

The diagram illustrates the position and location of these centers. It is important tounderstand that these centers are not physical in nature and position— though there areparallelswithourphysicalorgansandglands.Theseorgansexist inasubtleremotionalorpsychic or spiritual part of our nature. We may even consider them, not as realitiesthemselves,butassymbolsofrealities—great,redeeming,andsavingsymbols.

Undercertainconditionswemaybecomeawareoftheminverymuchthesamewaythatwemaybecomeawareofdifferentorgansinourphysicalbodies.Weoftenspeakofreasonasbeing situated in thehead, emotion in theheart, and instinct in thebelly; there exists asimilarnaturalcorrespondencebetweenthesecentersandvariouspartsofthebody.

There are three principalmeans for us to become aware of these centers, and awakenthem from theirdormant state so that theymay functionproperly.Themeansarethought,sound,andcolor.

First,throughourthoughts,weconcentrateontheassumedpositionofthesecenters,onebyone.

Thenwemakethesoundofcertainnames,whicharetobeconsideredascorrespondingvibratoryratestobeintonedandvibrated.

Finally,eachcenterisvisualizedashavingaparticularcolorandshape.

Thecombinationofthesethreethingsgraduallyawakensthecentersfromtheirdormantstates.Overtime,theybecomestimulated,eachfunctioningaccordingtoitsownnature,andtheypourforthintothebodyandmindastreamofenergyandpower.Ultimately,whentheiroperationbecomeshabitualandstabilized,thespiritualpowertheygeneratemaybedirectedbywilltohealvariousailmentsanddiseasesbothofaphysicalandapsychologicalnature.Itcanalsobecommunicatedtoanotherpersonbyaquiet,focusedlayingonofhands.Andbysimplythinking,withintentandfocus,theenergycanalsobecommunicatedfrommindtomindtelepathically,ortransmittedthroughspacetoanotherpersonmilesaway—forobjectsinspacecausenointerruptionorobstacletoitspassage.

TheMiddlePillarMeditationFirstofall,thepositionofthecentersasshowninthediagrammustbememorized.Theyarethentobestimulatedintoactivitywhileeithersittinguprightorlyingdownflatonthebackinaperfectlyrelaxedstate,justaswedidearlierinthepreliminaryexercise.

If sitting, the handsmay be folded in the lap, or theymay rest comfortably on thethighs, palms upward. If lying down, your hands should rest comfortably at yoursides, palms upward.Calmness ofmind should be induced, and severalminutes ofrhythmicbreathing should result in the sensationof agentle rippleplayingover thediaphragm.

Thenimaginethereisaballorsphereofbrilliantwhiteorgoldenlightabovethecrownofyourhead.Donotforcetheimaginationtovisualizethesphereoflight,forthisonly results in thedevelopmentofneu-romuscular tension,anddefeatsourend.Letitbedonequietlyandeasily.Ifthemindwanders,asindeeditwill,waitamomentortwoandgentlyleaditback.

Atthesametime,vibrateorintoneasound.Youhaveseveralchoiceshere:

1.Youcansimplyhumapitchthatseemstoresonate,ascloselyaspossible,inthelightof your center. Or you can resonate the pitch in your throat center, and direct itmentallytothecenterofyourchoice.

2. You can intone the word from the Judeo-Christian mystical tradition that isappropriatetothatparticularcenter.Forthefirstcenter,thewordtovibrateorintoneisEheieh, pronouncedEh-heh-yeh. (We’ll discuss these words inmore depth in amoment.)

3. Youcan chant anEnglish equivalentof the ancientword.For the first center, thewordstochantareIam.

4. You canmeditate upon each center, and discover thewords or sounds that havepowerandmeaningforyou.

After a few days of practice it will become quite easy to imagine the name vibratingabove the headin the so-calledSpirit center.Thisname, thiscenter, is the indwellingandovershadowingdivinityineachoneofus,thebasicspiritualselfthatwecanalldrawupon.EheiehmeansliterallyIam,andthiscenterrepresentstheIamconsciousnesswithin.

TheeffectofmentallydirectingthevibrationtotheSpiritcenteristoawakenthecentertodynamicactivity.Once itbegins tovibrateandrotate, lightandenergyare felt toemanatedownwardupon and into thebody.Enormous chargesof spiritual powermake theirwayinto thebrain,and theentirebody feels suffusedwithvitalityand life.Even the fingertipsandtoesreacttotheawakeningofthecoronal(Spirit)sphereasafaintpricklingsensationisatfirstfelt.

If you’re intoning aword or a name rather than humming a pitch, theword or nameshouldbeintonedduringthefirstfewweeksofpracticeinamoderatelyaudibleandresonanttoneofvoice.Asskillisacquired,thenthevibrationmaybepracticedinsilence,thenameorwordsbeing imaginedandmentallyplaced in thecenter. If themindtends towander, thefrequentrepetitionofthevibrationwillgreatlyhelpconcentration.

LetthemindrestinthelightoftheSpiritcenterforfiveminutesorso.Letitglow;feelits dynamic energy. Then imagine that it emits a white or golden shaft downwardthroughtheskullandbrain,stoppingatthethroat.Hereitexpandstoformasecondballoflight,whichincludesalargepartoftheface,uptoandincludingtheeyebrows.

WenamethisspheretheAircenter,andasimilartechniqueshouldbeappliedtothis center as to thepreviousone. It shouldbe stronglyandvividly formulatedas apulsingsphereofbrilliantwhiteorgoldenlight,shiningandglowingfromwithin.

The name that should be vibrated here isJehovahElohim, pronounced asYeh-hoh-vahEh-loh-heem.OryoucanusethewordsIsee,Ispeak.Ormeditateuponthatcenter,andmakeupyourownwords.Orsimplyhumintothatcenter’sradiantlight.

The traditional names for the centers—Eheieh, JehovahElohim, and soon—are inreality the names ascribed in various parts of theOldTestament toGod.The variety andvariationofthesenamesareattributedtodifferentdivinefunctions.Whenactinginacertainmanner,Godisdescribedbythebiblicalscribesbyonename.Whendoingsomethingelse,another name is used, one more appropriate to the actions or states of being that arerepresentedordescribed.

This system has its roots in the ancientHebrewmystical tradition. Its innovatorswereobviouslypeopleofexaltedreligiousaspirationsandgenius;theirworktranscendstimeandeven all the wide varieties of religious and philosophical beliefs. For our purposes, noreligious connotations whatsoever are implied by the use of these biblical divine names.Anyone may use them without subscribing in the least to the ancient religious views,whetherheorshebeaJew,Christian,Hindu,Buddhist,Moslem,someonewhoworshipsinanindigenousway,anatheist,oranythingelse.

Thisisapurelypractical,empiricalsystemthatissuccessfulregardlessoftheskepticismorfaithoftheoperator.Todaywemayconsiderthesesacrednamesinanentirelydifferentanduseful light:Theyarekeynotesofdifferentcomponentsofournature,doorwaystosomanylevelsofthatpartofthepsychethatisusuallysubconscious.Theyarevibratoryrates

Let us focus again on theAir center in the throat, and let the vibratory sounds beintoned a number of times, until their existence is recognized and clearly felt as adefinite sensory experience. There is no mistaking the sensation of its awakening.Aboutthesamelengthoftimeshouldbespenthere,andinthefollowingcenters,aswas devoted to the contemplation of the Spirit center.Once thisperiod of time haselapsed,letit,withtheaidoftheimagination,thrustashaftoflightdownwardfromitself.

Thelightdescendstothesolarplexusregion,justbeneaththesternumorbreastbone,andtheshaftexpandsonceagaintoformathirdsphere.ThisisthepositionoftheFirecenter.

The allocation of fire to this center is particularly appropriate, for the heart isusuallyassociatedwiththeemotions,withloveandthehigherfeelings.Thediameterof this sphere should extend from the front of the body to the back. The name tovibratehereisJehovahEloahve-Daas,pronouncedYeh-hoh-vahEh-lohve-Dah-ahs .WordstovibratehereareIlove.

Take care that the intonationvibrateswellwithin thewhiteorgolden sphere. Ifthis is done, a radiation of warmth will be felt to emanate from the center, gentlystimulatingallthepartsandorgansaroundit.

Sincethemindfunctionsinandthroughthebody,beingcoextensivewithit,thementalandemotionalfacultieslikewisebecomestimulatedbythedynamicflowofenergyfromthecenters.Theseeminglysolidbarrierbetweenourconsciousandsubconsciousminds—anarmored partition that impedes our free expression and hinders spiritual development—slowly begins to dissolve.As time goes on, and the practice continues, itmay disappearcompletelyandthepersonalitygraduallyachievesintegrationandwholeness.Genuinehealthspreadstoeveryfunctionofmindandbody,andhappinessfollowsasapermanentblessing.

Continuetheshaftdownwardfromthesolarplexustothepelvicregion,theregionofthe generative organs: the Water center. Visualize here, too, a radiant sphere ofapproximately the samedimensionsas thehigherone. Actually, however, the fear is groundless: The contemplation of theWater center as asphere ofwhite or golden light connected by a shaft to the higher centers actsmore as asedativethanasastimulant.And,inpointoffact,sexualstimulationcanbeveryeffectivelydealtwith—notbyrepression,butbythecirculationofsuchenergiesthroughthesystembymeans of this practice.A thoroughgoing and far-reaching process of sublimation, almosttruly alchemical in effect, may be achieved. (This is not, however, to be construed asencouraging the avoidance of dealing effectivelywith sexual problems, throughwhateverformoftherapyisnecessary.)

The final step is to visualize the shaft descending oncemore from the reproductivesphere,movingdownwardthroughthethighsandlegsuntilitstrikesthefeet.Thereitexpandsandformsafifthsphere.WehavenamedthisonetheEarthcenter.

ThecombinationofrhythmicbreathingwiththewilledvisualizationofthedescentofpowerthroughthelightshaftorMiddlePillar,asitisalsocalled,producesbyfarthebestresults.

AddingColorAs skill and familiarity are acquired in the formulation of the centers, an addition to thetechniquemaybemade.EarlierIremarkedthatcolorwasanimportantconsiderationinthistechnique.Eachcenterhasadifferentcolorattribution,thoughitiswisestforalongperiodoftimetorefrainfromusinganyothercolorthanwhiteorgold.

To the Spirit or coronal center, the colorwhite or gold is attributed. It is the color ofpurity,spirit,divinity,andsoon.Itrepresentsnotsomuchahumanelement,butauniversaland cosmic principle overshadowing the whole of humankind.As we descend the shaft,

From this brief and concise summary, it can be seen that each of these centers has anaffinity or sympathywith a different spiritual component.One center is sympathetic to orassociatedwiththeemotionsandfeelings,whileanotherhasadefiniteintellectualquality.Itfollowslogically,therefore—andexperiencedemonstratesthisfact—thatstimulatingthesecenters and gradually bringing them into a state of balance and equilibrium evokes asympatheticreactionfromeverypartofournature.

Wheredisease ismanifestingin thebody, theactivityof theappropriatecentermustbeconsideredasaffectedsomehowinanunhealthyway.Itsstimulationbythought,sound,and

CirculatingtheForceHaving brought power and spiritual energy into the system by means of visualizing thecenters,howbestarewetouseit?Thatistosay,useitinsuchawaythateverysinglecell,everyatom,everyorganbecomesstimulatedandvitalizedbythatdynamicstream?

Tobegin,wethrowthemindupwardtothecoronalsphereagain,andimagineittobei na state of vigorous activity. It revolves rapidly, absorbing spiritual energy fromspace around it, and transforming it in such a way that it becomes available forimmediateuseinanyhumanactivity.

Imagine,then,thatthistransformedenergyflowslikeastreamdowntheleftsideof the head, down the left side of the trunk and the left leg.While the current isdescending,thebreathshouldslowlybeexhaledtoaconvenientrhythm.Thenslowlyinhale, and imagine that thevital current passes from the soleof the left foot to therightfoot,andgraduallyascendstherightsideofthebody.Inthiswayitreturnstothesourcefromwhichitwasissued—thecoronalcenter,thehumansourceofallenergyandvitality—establishingaclosedelectricalcircuit.

Visualize this energy flowing within the body rather than traveling around theperipheryofthephysicalbody.Itisaninteriorpsychiccirculationratherthanapurelyphysicalone.Oncethiscirculationisfirmlyestablishedbythemind,letitflowevenlytotherhythmofyourbreathingforsomesecondssothatthecircuithasbeentraversedabouthalfadozentimes—orevenmore,ifyouwish.

Thenrepeatit inaslightlydifferentdirection.Visualizethevitalflowasmovingfromthecoronalcenterabovetheheaddownthebackoftheheadandbody.Itturnsforwardunder the solesof the feet and ascendsup the frontof thebody in a fairlywide belt of vibrating energy. This should also be accompanied by a slow, steadyexhalation and inhalation of breath, and should continue for at least six completecircuits.

Thegeneraleffectofthesetwomovementsistoestablishinandaboutthephysicalformanovoidshape(shapedsomewhat likeanegg)ofswiftlycirculatingsubstanceand power. Since the spiritual energy dealt with by this technique is extremelydynamicandkinetic,itradiatesineverydirection,spreadingoutwardtoanappreciable

distance.It is this radiation that forms, colors, and informs theovoid sphereof sensation,

Generalperceptionandexperiencehasitthatthesphereofluminosityandmagnetismextendsoutwardtoadistancemoreorlessidenticaltothelengthoftheoutstretchedarm.Andit iswithin this aura, aswemay call it, that the physical person exists rather like akernelwithinanutshell.

Circulatingtheforceadmittedintothesystembythesementalexercisesistantamounttocharging it to a considerable degree in every aspect of its nature with life and energy.Naturally this is bound to exert a considerable influence, so far as general health isconcerned,upontheenclosed“kernel”within.

Thefinalmethodofcirculationresemblestheactionofafountain.Justaswaterisforcedordrawnupthroughapipeuntilitjetsupabove,andfallsinasprayonallsides,sodoesthepowerdirectedbythislastcirculation.

Now throw the mind downward to the Earth center, and imagine it to be theculminationofalltheothers,thereceptacleofallpower,thestorehouseandterminaloftheincomingvitalforce.

Then imagine that this power ascends, or is drawn or sucked upward by themagnetic attraction of the Spirit center above the crown of the head. The powerascends the shaft until it surgesoverheadwith amarvelous fountainousdisplay andfallsdownwithintheconfinesoftheovoidaura.

Whenithasdescendedtothefeet,itisagaingatheredtogetherandconcentratedintheEarthcenterbeforeitsurgesuptheshaftagain.

The fountain circulation should accompany a definite rhythm of inhalation andexhalation.Bythesemeans,thehealingforceisdistributedtoeverypartofthebody.Nosingleatomorcellinanyorganorlimbisomittedfromtheinfluenceofitshealing,regenerativepower.

TheArtofTrueHealingOnce the circulations are completed, let the mind dwell quietly on the idea of thesphere of light, spiritual and vital and healing, surrounding the entire body. Thevisualizationshouldbemadeasvividandaspowerfulaspossible.

The sensation following the partial or complete formulation of the aura in themannerdescribedissomarkedanddefiniteastobequiteunmistakable.Itismarkedby an extreme sense of calmness and vitality and poise, as though the mind wereplacidandstill.Thebody,completelyatrest,feelsinallitspartsthoroughlychargedandpermeatedbythevibrantcurrentoflife.Theskinoverallthebodyfeelsagentlepricklingandwarmth,causedby the intensificationof lifewithin.Theeyesbecomeclearandbright,theskintakesonafresh,healthyglow,andeveryfaculty—spiritual,mental,emotional,andphysical—becomesconsiderablyenhanced.

If thereareany functionaldisturbancesinanyorganor limb, this is themomentwhentheattentionshouldbedirectedandfocusedonthatpart.Theresultofthisfocusof attention directs a flow of energy over and above the general equilibrium justestablished.Thediseasedorganbecomesbathedinaseaoflightandpower.Diseasedtissueanddiseasedcells,underthestimulusofsuchpower,becomegraduallybrokendownandejectedfromthepersonalsphere.Therevitalizedbloodstreamisthenabletosendtothatspotnewnourishmentandnewlifesothatnewcells,tissue,fiber,etc.,caneasily be built up. In thisway, health is restored by the persistent concentration ofdivinepower.

Whenthisiscarriedonforafewdaysinthecaseofsuperficialailments,andformonthsin the event of chronic and severe troubles, all symptoms may successfully be banishedwithoutotherscomingtotaketheirplace.Thereisnosuppressionofsymptoms;theresultofthesemethodsiseliminationofthedisease.

Even mental and emotional problems may be effectively dealt with by using thesetechniques,forthecurrentsofforcearisefromthedeepeststrataofthesubconsciousmind,wherementalandemotionalneuroseshave theirorigin—where they lockupournaturalenergy,preventing spontaneous and free expressionof thepsyche.Theupwellingofvitalforcesthroughtheentiresystemdissolvesthecrystallizationsandarmoredbarriersthatdividethevariousstrataofpsychicfunction.

Where physical disease is the problem to be attacked, the procedure to follow is slightlydifferent—and, if theproblemisserious,oneshouldstill,ofcourse,consultacompetentphysician. In this instanceaconsiderablystrongercurrentof force isnecessary inorder todissolveanyabnormalities,suchasgrowthsorlesions,andtosetinmotionthesystemicandmetabolicactivitiestoconstructnewtissueandcellularstructure.

Tofulfilltheseconditions,itisideallyveryhelpfultohaveasecondpersontoassist,sothathisorhervitalitymaybeaddedtothatofthesuffererinordertoovercomethecondition.Here is auseful technique — one that my experience has discovered to be supremelysuccessful,andonethatanyonecanadopt:

First of all, completely relax every tissue in the body before attempting theMiddlePillar technique. The patient is placed in a highly relaxed state by first simplybecoming aware of every neuromuscular tension. Consciousness is then able toeliminatetensionandinducearelaxedstateofthatmuscleorlimb.

Spinalmanipulationandmassage,withdeepkneading,isveryusefultobeginwith,forinthiswayanenhancedcirculationofthebloodandlymphsystemisproduced—and,fromthephysiologicalpointofview,halfthebattleiswon.

Onceasuitabledegreeofrelaxationisobtained,thepatient’sfeetarecrossedovertheanklesandthepatient’sfingersinterlacedsothattheyrestlightlyoverthesolarplexus.Theoperatororhealer thensitson therightsideof theperson if thepatient is right-handed (and on the left for a left-handed patient) and places his or her right hand

gently on the solar plexus under the patient’s intertwined hands, and his or her lefthandon the patient’s head (these are reversed for a left-handed patient).A formofrapport is established at once, and within a few minutes a free circulation ofmagnetismandvitalityissetup,easilydis-cernablebybothpatientandhealer.

Thepatient’sattitudeshouldbeoneofabsolutereceptivitytotheincomingforce—thiswillnaturallyoccurif thepatienthasunwaveringconfidenceandfaithintheoperator’s integrity and ability. Silence and quiet should be maintained for a shortwhile; then the operator silently focuses on his or her own body and performs thepracticeoftheMiddlePillar,stillmaintainingphysicalcontactwiththepatient.

Thehealer’sawakenedspiritualcentersactonthepatientbysympathy.Asimilarawakeningisintroducedwithinthepatient’ssphere,whosecenterseventuallybegintooperateandthrowastreamofenergyintohisorhersystem.Evenwhentheoperatordoes not vibrate the divine names audibly, the power flowing through his or herfingers sets up an energy that produces healing activity within the patient, whosepsycho-spiritual centers are sympathetically stirred into the active assimilation andprojectionofforcesothat,withoutanyconsciouseffortonthepatient’spart,hisorhersphereisinfusedwith,eveninvadedby,thedivinepowerofhealingandlife.

Whentheoperatorarrivesatthecirculationstage,theoperatoremployshisorhervisualizing faculty— a veritable magical power indeed— so that the augmentedcurrentsofenergyflownotonlythroughhisorherownspherebutthroughthatofthepatientaswell.

The nature of their rapport now begins to undergo a subtle change. Whereasformerlythereexistedclosesympathyandaharmoniousframeofmind,mutuallyheld,duringandafterthecirculationsthereisanactualunionandinterblendingofthetwoenergy fields.Theyunite to forma singlecontinuous sphereas the interchangeandtransference of vital energy proceeds. The healer — or the healer’s subconsciouspsycheor spiritual self—isable todivineexactlyhowstrong theprojectedcurrentshouldbe,andpreciselywhereitshouldbedirected.

Anumberof treatments incorporating thecooperationand trainingof thepatient in theuse of these methods should certainly go far in alleviating the original condition. Ifnecessary,medicalandmanipulativemethodsmayusefullybecombinedwiththemethodsdescribedtofacilitateandhastenthecure.

AlthoughIhavestressedhealingofphysicalills,itcannotbeinsistedupontoostronglythatthismethod is suitable for application to a host of other problems.This techniquewill befound to be a powerful creative tool in all other situations thatmay arise,whether it be aproblemofpoverty, characterdevelopment, or social ormarital difficulties— in fact, anytypeofproblemonehas.

Onlyalittlepracticeisnecessaryforthis,andskillisveryquicklyandeasilyobtained.Asphysical relaxation is achieved, themind itself in all its different aspects and ramificationsundergoesasimilarrelaxation.

Physical inflexibility as well as mental and emotional tension are the great barriers torealizing theomnipresenceof thebodyofGod.Theyactuallypreventonefrombecomingawareoftheever-presenceofthelife-force,thedependenceofthemindupon—andevenits ultimate identity with — the Universal Mind, the collective unconscious. When themind’s petty barriers are eliminated, and life flows through its extensive organization,webecomeconsciousofthedynamicprinciplepervadingandpermeatingallthings.Thisstepiswithoutquestiontheall-importantphaseintheapplicationofthesetechniques.

Onceawareofthis,thelogicalprocedureistoawakentheinnerspiritualcentersthatcanhandle thishigh-voltagepower,and transform it intoausablehumanquality.Possibly theeasiest way to conceive of this is to liken the spiritual part of us to a radio receiver.Areceivermustfirstofallbeconnectedtoapowersourcebeforeitwillwork.Oncepowerisflowingthroughit,thentherestoftheintricatemechanismisabletocomeintooperation.

Thewish,theheart’sdesire,thegoaltobereached,mustbeheldfirmlyinmind,vitalizedby divine power, and propelled forward into the universe by the fiery intensity of all theemotionalexaltationwearecapableof.Prayeristhereforeindispensable.Prayer,notmerelyasapetitiontosomeGodoutsideofussomewhere,butprayerconceivedasthespiritualandemotionalstimuluscalculatedtobringaboutanidentificationwithorrealizationofourownGodhead.

Prayer,ifsincerelyundertaken,mobilizesallthequalitiesoftheself,andtheinnerfervorthat it awakens reinforces the work previously done. Prayer renders success an almostinfallibleresult.Forinsuchacase,successcomesnotbecauseofone’sownhumaneffort,butbecauseGodbringsabouttheresult.Thefervorandtheemotionalexaltationenableonetorealizethedivinitywithin,whichisthespiritualfactorthatbringsourdesirestoimmediateandcompletefulfillment.

Anancientmetaphysicianoncesaid,Inflamethyselfwithprayer.Hereisthesecret.Wemustpraysothatthewholeofourbeingbecomesaflamewitha

spiritualintensitybeforewhichnothingcanstand.Allillusionsandalllimitationsfadeawayutterlybeforethisfervor.Whenthesoulliterallyburnsup,thenspiritualidentitywithGodisattained.Thentheheart’sdesireisaccomplishedwithouteffort—becauseGoddoesit.Thewishbecomesfact—objective,phenomenalfact,foralltosee.

What prayers, then, should be employed to lift the mind to this intensity, to awaken theemotionalfervorsothatonecan“inflamethyselfinpraying”?Thisisaproblemtobesolvedbyeachoneofusforourselves.Everyoneofushassomeideaaboutprayerwhich,whensustained, will inflame us to inward realization. enterprising,youwilldivineyourownusesforit.

Itmaybe forvarious reasons that certainphysicalnecessitiesof life,or certainmental,emotional, or spiritual qualities, have been denied one — with a subsequent sense offrustration and a limiting effect on character. Frustration always has a depressing andinhibitory effect on the human mind, producing indecision, inefficiency, and a sense ofinferiority.

Thereisnorealnecessityforanyunduefrustrationandinhibitioninourlives.Acertainamountisnodoubtinevitable.Aslongasweremainhumanitisquitecertainthatinsomemeasure we are likely to be thwarted in our efforts to fully express the inner self, andconsequentlyexperiencesomedegreeoffrustration.Butanyabnormalmeasureorpersistentsenseof frustrationor lackof accomplishmentmaybedealtwith and eliminatedby thesemental,emotional,andspiritualmethods.

Firstofall,anunderstandingof life isessential,aswellasanunconditionalacceptanceofeverything in life and every experience that may come one’s way. With understandingcomes a love of life and living, for love and understanding are one and the same.Understandingalsofostersthedeterminationtonolongerfrustratenaturalprocessesbut,byouracceptance,tocooperatewithnature.

A vast number of mental, emotional, and spiritual methods have been developed thathavelongheldouthopethattheseinhibitoryconditionsmaybealleviated.Povertyofestateaswellasof idea isa lifecondition that these techniqueshavealwaysproveneffective intreating.

One effective method is deep and prolongedreflection upon just the mental stimulus,moral quality, ormaterial thing that iswanted, so that the idea of the need sinks into thesubconscious mind. If the barriers leading to the subconscious are penetrated so that thesubconscious accepts the idea of the need, then sooner or later life will inevitably attractthosethingsrequired.

But, aswith all therapeuticmethods, there are somany instanceswhere, despite closeadherencetotheprescribedtechniques,successisnotforthcoming.Itismyfeelingandbeliefthattheyfailforverymuchthesamereasonsthattheirhealingeffortsfail:becausethereisnot true understanding of the nature of the subconscious and of the whole body-mindorganismwherebysucheffectscanbeproduced.Thereisnoappreciationofthemethodsbywhich the dynamic nature of the subconscious can be stimulated so that the humanpersonalitybecomestransformedintoapowerfulmagnetattractingtoitselfwhateverittrulydesiresorisnecessarytoitswelfare.

Some people question whether this procedure ismorally defensible. The answer is brief:Whateverfacilitieswehavearemeanttobeused,andusedbothforourownadvantageandthat of others. If we are in a state of constant mental friction, emotional frustration, and

Bystimulatingourcentersofenergywithinandthenformulatingclearlyandvividlyourdemandsupontheuniverse,wearecapableofattractingalmostanythingwerequire—aslong,naturally,asitexistswithintheboundsofreasonandpossibility.

Iwish to introducehere oneother verypowerful and effective element, one that borrowsfromastrology.Iamnotconcernedherewithastrologyassuch,merelythatitisconvenienttouseitsschema,itssystemofclassification.Iamnotintheleastconcernedaboutarguingfororagainstthevalidityofastrology;Isimplywanttostatethat,fromapracticalpointofview, the basiccomponents of astrology are of great value in that they offer a conciseclassificationofthebroaddivisionofthings.*

Therootsofastrologyareinthesevenprincipalideas,symbolizedbythesun,moon,andinnerplanets—theplanetsknowntoourancestors.Everyideaandthingwecanimaginecanbeclassifiedwithinoneoftheserootideas.Toeachofthemthereisattributedapositiveandnegativecolor,andadivinenameforthepurposeofvibration.

These thingsvary somewhat from tradition to tradition; I proposenaming theprincipalattributesasfollows:

Sun:Powerandsuccess.Life,money,growthofallkinds.Illumination,imagination,mental power. Health. Superiors, employers, executives, officials. Positive color:orange. Negative color: yellow or gold.Jehovah Eloah ve-Daas, pronouncedYeh-hoh-vahEh-lohve-Dah-ahs.

Moon: Changes and fluctuations. Women, intuition. The personality. The generalpublic. Short journeys, moving to a new home or new area. Positive color: blue.Negativecolor:puce(adarkred).ShaddaiElChai, pronouncedShah-diElChi (thechisguttural,asin“loch”).

These,verybriefly,aretheattributionsofthesun,moon,andplanetsunderwhichalmosteverything and every subject in nature may be classified. This classification is extremelyusefulbecauseitenormouslysimplifiesone’staskofphysicalandspiritualdevelopment.I’llgive a few simple examples to illustrate the function and method of employing thesecorrespondences.

Suppose I am engaged in certain studies requiring books that are not easily obtainablefrombooksellers.Despitemyeverydemandforthem,inspiteofwidespreadadvertisingandwillingnesstopayareasonablepriceforthem,myeffortsareunavailing.Theresultisthat,forthetimebeing,mystudiesareheldup.Thedelaybecomesexcessiveandirritating,andIdecidetousemyowntechnicalmethodsforendingit.

Atcertainprescribedintervals,preferablyuponawakeninginthemorningandbeforeretiring tosleepatnight, Ipractice therhythmicbreathingand theMiddlePillar.Bythese methods I have made available enormous quantities of spiritual power, andtransformed the subconscious into a powerful storage battery, ready to project orattractpowertofulfillmyneed.ThisIcirculatethroughtheauricsystem.

MynextstepconsistsofvisualizingthenegativeorpassivecolorofMercury—orange—sothatmeditatinguponitchangesthesurroundingauriccolortothathue.Orangeisusedbecausebooks,whichIneed,areattributedtoMercury,andIemploythenegativecolorbecauseittendstomakethesphereofsensationopen,passive,andreceptive.

Then I proceed to charge and vitalize the sphere by vibrating the appropriatedivinenameagain andagain, until it seems tomyperceptions that all themercurialforcesoftheuniversereacttothemagneticattractionofthatsphere.Alltheforcesofthe universe are imagined to converge uponmy sphere, attracting tome just thosebooks,documents,critics,friends,andsoonneededtofurthermywork.

Inevitably,afterpersistentandconcentratedwork,Ihearfromfriendsorbooksellersquitebychance,soitseems,thatthesebooksareavailable.Introductionsareprocuredtotherightpeople,andmyworkisassisted.

Theresultsoccurinaperfectlynaturalway—oneisnottoimaginethattheuseofthesemethodscontravenestheknownlawsofnatureandthatmiraculousphenomenawilloccur.Farfromit;thereisnothinginthemthatissupernatural.Thesemethodsarebasedupontheuseofpsychicprinciplesnormallylatentwithinus,whicheveryonepossesses.Noindividualisuniqueinthisrespect.Andtheuseofthesepsychicprinciplesbringsresultsthroughquitenormalbutunsuspectedchannels.

Hereisanotherexample:

If I desire to help a patient or friend who has literary aspirations but at a certainjuncturefindshisstylecrampedandthefreeflowofideasinhibited,Ishouldaltermymethod in one particular point only. Instead of using orange as before, I shouldvisualize the aura as having a yellow or golden color, though the vibratory namewouldbethesame.

Instead of imagining universal forces to have a centripetal motion toward mysphere,Ishouldattempttorealizethatthemercurialforcesawakenedwithinmebythecolorvisualizationandvibrationarebeingprojectedfrommetomypatientorfriend.

If he, too, becomes quiet and meditative at the same hour, my help becomes morepowerful,sinceheconsciouslyassistsmyeffortswithasimilarmeditation.Butthisneednotbeinsistedupon.For,asshownbytelepathyexperiments,hisownunconsciouspsychewillpick up automatically the inspiration and power I have telepathically forwarded to himinabsentia.Thetechniqueisveryeffectivewhenthepersonreceivingtheenergyisasleep,aswell.

This system combines telepathic suggestion with the willed communication of vitalpower. The technical procedure is, as I have shown, extremely simple — even whereemployedforsubjectiveends.

Suppose the realization suddenly comes tome that instead of being themagnanimouspersonIhadimaginedmyselftobe,Iaminfactmeanandstingy.OfcourseIcouldgotoapsychoanalyst to discover why my nature early in life had become warped so that Ideveloped a habit ofmiserliness. But this is a lengthy and costly business (an especiallyimportantconsiderationforamiser),andsomuchwoulddependupontheanalystIchose,andtherelationshipwewouldeventuallycreate.

Instead,Imightusethefollowingtechnique.

My first steps consist of those described before: rhythmic breathing, the light-shaftformulated from head to foot, and the circulation of force through the aura. Then,remembering that a generous outlook upon life is a Jupiterian quality, I surroundmyselfwithanazure-bluespherewhilevibratingfrequentlyandpowerfullythedivinenameEl.

It depends entirely upon one’s skill and familiaritywith the systemwhether thenamesarevibratedsilentlyoraudibly.Butbyeitherway,powerfulJupiteriancurrentspermeatemybeing.Ievenvisualizeeverycellbeingbathedinanoceanofblue,andIattempt to imaginecurrents invadingmysphere fromeverydirection, so thatallmythinkingandfeelingisliterallyintermsofblue.

Slowly a subtle transformation ensues — as long as I am really sincere, desirous ofcorrectingmy faults, and if I attempt to become generous enough to perform the practicefaithfullyandoften.

Similarly,ifafriendorpatientcomplainedofasimilarviceinhimorher,appealingtomeforhelp, inthis instanceIwoulduseapositivecolorforprojection.Iwouldformulatemy

sphereasanactive,dynamicpurplesphere,richandroyalincolor,andprojectitsgenerous,healing, and productive influence upon their mind and personality. Over time, the faultwouldbecorrectedtotheirsatisfaction,andtheirspiritualnaturewouldbeenhanced.

Andsoon,witheverythingelse.These fewexamples, Iamsure,willhaveshown theapplicationofthemethods.

It isnotenoughsimplytowishforcertainresultsandidlyexpect themtofollow.Onlyfailure can come from such an idle course.Anything worthwhile and likely to succeedrequiresagreatdealofworkandperseverance.TheMiddlePillartechniqueiscertainlynoexception.Butdevotion to it isextremelyworthwhilebecauseof thenatureandqualityoftheresultsthatfollow.

Onceadaywilldemonstratetheeffectivenessofthemethod.Twiceadayismuchbetter—especiallyifthereissomeillnessormentaloremotionaldifficultytoovercome.

Those who are sincere and those whose spiritual natures are gradually unfolding willapply themselves to themethodquiteapart fromthepromiseswhichIhavehereheldout,simplybecauseitissoenjoyableandfulfillinginitselftodotheMiddlePillarmeditation.

Healing powers, freedom from poverty and worry, happiness — all of these areeminentlydesirable.Butabovealloftheseisthedesirabilityofknowingandexpressingourspiritualnaturewithin—thoughitmaybeinsomecasesthatthisidealishardlyattainableuntilsomemeasureoffulfillmentinotherrespectsandonotherlevelshasbeenachieved.

When,however,theidealisrealizedasdesirable,thenthevalueofthismethodwillalsoberealizedassupremelyeffectivetothatend.

It is the sourceof love,acceptance, joy. It isourconnection tohumanity,toalltheworld,andiscentraltoourpurposeinlife.

TheWatercentercombinesthefirstandsecondchakras,theRootChakraandtheSexualCenter.TheRootChakraisourgroundingintheearth,ourconnectionwithoursource.TheSexualCenteristhesourceofourabilitytocreatelife, thetruesourceofallcreativityandfulfillment.

TheEarthcenterisbelowallchakras,atourfeet,connectingustotheearth.ThisservesthesamefunctionastheRootChakra.

Sometimes,intheMiddlePillarmeditation,Ifinditevenmoreeffectivetofocusoneachofthesevenchakrasratherthanthefivecentersoftheoriginaltradition.Ratherthanstartingatthetop,asintheoriginalmeditation,Iusuallystartatthebottomandworkup.Experimentwith both, and see which you prefer. FocusyourattentiononyourRootChakra. Ifyouaresitting,you’resitting rightonyour Root Chakra. If you are lying on your back, it’s at the base of your torso,centeredinyoursphinctermuscleandincludingthemusclesarounditthataresolidlyon the ground (yourgluteus maximus, the largest muscle in your body). Breathedeeply into that area, imagining awarm,healing light filling the area.Somepeoplechoosetoimagineaflowerbloomingthere—andateachoftheothercentersaswell— often an unfolding, spreading lotus blossom. Let your visualization evolvenaturally.Aglowingcircleorsphereoflightwilldonicely.

Afterseveralbreaths,movethesphereoflightuptoyourSexualCenter.Breathedeeplyintothatarea,imaginingawarm,healinglightfillingthearea.

End your meditation with whatever feels comfortable and appropriate for you:Youcanletyourvisualizationfloatoffintospace,and“lettheuniverseworkoutthedetails”;youcansayaprayer;youcanimaginethewholeplanetbathedinthehealinglightofyourradiantmeditation;youcanmeditatequietly,bathedinthelightofyourinner radiance,watchingwhatever thoughtsarise;youcanask forguidance inyourlife, and listen for answers from your deepest sources of knowledge; or you cansimplysitinwonderful,healingsilence.

Finish with a final deep breath, open your eyes, and come back into wakingreality,feelingrelaxed,refreshed,peaceful,inharmonywithyourselfandyourworld.

But I encourage everyone to do the abovemeditation, and spend at least fifteen ortwentyminutesonit.Itisespeciallyeffectivejustasyouawakeinthemorning(myfavoritetimetodoit),orwhenyougotobedatnight.It’scertainlyworthgettingupfifteenminutesearlierinthemorning,ifnecessary—youcanvisualizesailingeffortlesslythroughtheday,creatingsuccessaftersuccess(orwhateverelseyouwanttocreatethatday).

Especiallyatfirst,you’llfindyourattentionwillwander.Simplybringitbacktowhereyouwere,andcontinue.Afterawhile,yourpowersofconcentrationwillbecomestronger,andthefeelingsandvisualizationswillbecomemorevivid.Itisimportant,asyouprogress,todothemeditationinaplacewhereyouwon’tbedisturbed.Silenceisgolden.

TheTwo-MinuteVersionHere is an example of how to abbreviate the previous meditation so that it can still beeffectiveina

veryshorttime.Ittakesonlysevenbreathstogetintoit;thenyoufocusonthehealingorwhateverelseyouwanttocreate,letitgo,andgetonwithyourlife.

Sitorliecomfortably,asabove.Closeyoureyes.Take a deep breath, andrelax your body. Take another deep breath, andrelax

yourmind.Takeanotherdeepbreath,andleteverythinggo.Takeanotherdeepbreath,andcountdownfromtentoone,falling,likealeaffrom

atree,deeperanddeeperintoquiet,relaxedstillness.Take another deep, cleansing breath, and “run the energy” up one side of your

bodyasyouinhale,anddowntheothersideofyourbodyasyouexhale.Takeanotherdeepbreath, and run theenergyup the frontofyourbodyasyou

inhale,anddownthebackofyourbodyasyouexhale.Take another deep breath, and run thelight and energy up themiddle of your

body,upyourspine,yourMiddlePillar,asyou inhale, then let it showeroveryou,surroundingyoufully,asyouexhale.

Repeatthesevenbreathsabove,ifnecessary,untilyouarerelaxedandquiet.

Nowfocusontheareatobehealed,ifyouwish,andsendcleansinglightandbreathinto thearea.Or, ifyouwish tovisualize something, focusonyour thirdeye, fill itwithlightandbreath,andimaginewhatyouwanttocreate.Thenletitgoandlettheuniverseworkoutthedetails.

Youcanendthereor, ifyouwish,finishwithaprayerorasilentmeditation,oranythingelsementionedattheendofthepreviousmeditation—oranythingelseyouwish….

Takeafinalhealingbreath,openyoureyes,andcomeback intowakingreality,feelingrelaxed,refreshed,fullyawake,calm,clear,peaceful,andfulfilled.

PersonalandBusinessRelationshipsHere is a fascinating variation that has proven to be surprisingly effective in personalrelationships.Ifyouarehavingdifficultywithsomeoneinanyway—whetherinpersonallifeorinbusinessrelationships—thismeditationcanhavepowerfulresults.

AfteryoudosomeformoftheMiddlePillarmeditation—relaxing,visualizingyourenergycenters,runningenergy—breathedeeplyintoyourheart,andfillitwithlight.Then imagine thepersonyouarehavingdifficultywithand, fromyourheart, speakyourtruthtothem.Tellthemeverythingyouwantthemtohear.Trynottoblamethemormakethemwrong.Stayinyourheart,ifatallpossible.Trytocomefromaplaceoflove.Thenlettheproblemgo,andmeditateonacceptanceofthesituation.

Endwiththeserenityprayer,orsomeadaptationofit, if itseemsappropriateforyou:GodgrantmetheserenitytoacceptthethingsIcannotchange,thecouragetochangethethingsIcan,andthewisdomtoknowthedifference.

Thenext timeyou talk to that person, youwill probablybe surprised at the change inyour relationship. I’ve seen,many times overmanyyears, seemingly intractable problemsbetween people simply dissolve, and a wonderful warmth emerge between them. Youdiscover,underneathitall,you’rereallyveryfondofthatperson—otherwise,youwouldn’thavebotheredtobesoupset.

This form of creativemeditation seems to work even better when the other person isasleep. If you are everbothered in themiddleof thenightby aproblemwith someone, Ihighlyrecommendthismeditation.Andprepareyourselfforsometrulystartlingresults.

Ifyou try to remain inyourheartcenter inallofyour relationships,somanyproblemssimplydissolve,withouteffort,struggle,orargument.Thismeditationremindsusofthat.

TheMiddlePillaristhemain“trunk”oftheTreeofLife,thecentralfocusofthestudyoftheKabbalah,which—alongwithanEgyptianinfluence—formsthebasisforsomuchoftheWestern traditionofmetaphysicsandmagicalcreation.TheTreeofLifehas tenstages—beginning in the highest spiritual planes and descending into planesof thought, thenemotion,and finallyphysical reality.Therootsof theTreeofLifeareinheaven.This isawell-knownphrasetothosewhohavestudiedKabbalah.WhenweunderstandtheTreeofLife,weunderstandthenatureandmechanicsofcreation,andwebecomemagiciansinthetruesenseoftheword,abletomagicallycreatewhatwewantinlifewiththepowerofourunderstanding.

The four stages that form theMiddlePillar of theTreeofLife are the four stages thatevery created thing has passed through: First it was (and still in essence is) a spiritualimpulse,aformofenergy,evermysterious,connectedinexorablyonaquantumlevelwiththewholeuniverse.

Thenitbecomesathought.Nothingisevercreatedwithoutfirstbeingathought,aclearthoughtinthemind.Ifthatthoughtisheldontolongenough,ifitisfocuseduponstrongly,ithasachanceofmanifesting—if,andonlyif,thethoughtbecomesanemotion.Inordertocreateanything,itmustnotonlybeenvisioned,itmustbedesiredemotionally.Itmustbeafeeling within you as well as a thought. This is my interpretation of what Dr. Regardiemeanswhenhe tellsus to“inflameourselveswithprayer.”Wemuststrongly feel thatwewanttocreatewhateveritiswedesireinourlives.

Oncethesethreethingsareinalignment,theMiddlePillarisnearlycomplete:Wehaveaspiritualimpulsethatbecomesathought,andthatthoughtbecomesapowerfulfeeling.Oncewecontinuetoholdthatthoughtandfeeling,sothatbothourthoughtsandfeelingsbecomefocused insteadof scattered, the final stageof theMiddlePillarcomes intobeing,andwecreatethatwhichwedesire,seeminglybymagic,inphysicalreality.Sobeit.Soitis.

I’ll closewith a briefmeditationon theKabbalah. Itwill giveyou a visual picture of thestagesoftheTreeofLife.NotethattheMiddlePillarrunsdownthecenter,andthatthetopcirclerepresentsthespiritualstage,theSpiritcenter;theonedirectlyunderneathitrepresentsthestageofthought,theAircenter;underneaththatisthestageofemotion,theWatercenter;andthefinalstage,at thebottom,is thephysicalplane, theEarthcenter.It isherethatourdesiresfinallymanifest.Therootsofcreation,therootsoftheTreeofLife,areinheaven;itsfinalfloweringisinphysicalreality,inthethingswesee,hear,smell,taste,andtouch.

Inthebeginningwastheendlessvoid,symbolizedbythenumberzero,pureshininginfinity,absoluteoneness

Then theessenceof themiracleofcreationoccurs, firston thesubtlest spiritualandquantum levels of existence, the most wondrous thing in the universe: The one

Thiscreativeurgeisreflectedtoadenserlevel,thelevelofthought….Creationbecomesathought…andtherearesixstages:

Then,ifthethoughtcontinues—ifitisfocusedupon,andrepeated,andnotsimplyletgo— it is reflected to a still denser level, the emotional level.Creation becomes afeeling,adesire.…AndthereareninestagestotheTreeofLife:

Then, once the Middle Pillar of the spiritual, mental, and emotional planes is inalignment — once our impulse for creation of anything in our life is not only aspiritual impulsebutafocusedthoughtandastrongemotionaswell—thematerialplane becomesmanifest, in all its splendor: the physical plane, which we can see,touch,feel.ThetenthandfinalstageoftheTreeofLifecomesintobeing:
